Live Performance and chat with Nick Garrie
After recording a Baroque pop masterpiece in the late 60's, "The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas," Nick Garrie and the album seemingly disappeared when the distribution deal collapsed. But that is far from the end of Nick's story. He continued to write charmingly catchy songs, occasionally collaborating with songwriter Francis Lai, and eventually topped the charts in Spain with a tune in the 1980's. "Stanislas" was finally reissued in 2005, and Garrie tours here and there. Nick Garrie was in NYC for one of those rare shows and Irene brought him into the studio for some live performance and chat.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Bronwyn Bishop:

This is, if not my favorite song of all time, definitely top 5. The first time I heard it I had to stop what I was doing and just sit there and listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Tome:

ahhhh ,, Irene in the Evening ! [ headphones back in the chair ]
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yay, Bill Fay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm herb.nyc:

Hi all. Excuse me as I post this NICK GARRIE thing now (bec later, I'll need to use the iPhone app and that will certainly fail). My pal Jack Rabid does the Big Takeover mag & he alerted us- "watch Nick G's show at Tonic". This be June 2006. But he played Other Music night before tonic & I went. I loved it. After, I told Nick "look at the Big T on the rack, yr record is reviewed". He does so, makes biiig smile, then calls to his friend "hey, looky here, I'm in this magazine!". Next night, I introduce him to jack. this be TEN years ago!
  9:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm told there's Lee Hazelwood that's not so good. I haven't heard it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Bronwyn Bishop:

This is so brilliant
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Bronwyn Bishop:

And now Scott! Irene, I don't know if you intentionally put together all of my favorite things in this set, but I appreciate it all the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Irene Trudel:

Good tunes comin' you way, Bronwyn, Tome, herb.nyc, and Rev. Rabbit (and everybody tuning in)! Yeah, Bronwyn, every so often "Some Velvet Morning" just gets under my skin and I gotta play it. Herb, So glad you told us your Nick Garrie story. He was brilliant a few weeks ago at the tiny club I saw him at, even though the sound was terrible and some patrons didn't give a damn who was up there. Glad to send this set your way tonight!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I love this too!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yay, Brel! Have I told y'all about the Jacques Brel-songs-in-purgatory show I'm directing at school? I probably have...
  9:21pm Linda Lee:

amazing set so far, Irene. amazing. incredibly comfortable.
  9:22pm Linda Lee:

i've heard nothing about the Brel show, Bronwyn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm melinda:

This set is flowing really well!
Avatar 9:25pm Van in DC:

Hi Irene, hi everyone. Got stuck in DC traffic
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Linda: I wrote a play/musical thing about a bar that turns out to be purgatory and all the characters tell the stories of their lives so that the bartender can judge whether they deserve to go to heaven or hell. The show features Brel's songs, which are used as the way the characters tell their stories. It's happening in December at my school (Ithaca College).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Aw, I love Harry Nilsson!
  9:27pm Linda Lee:

@Bronwyn, that sounds brilliant. not just sayin so. how's it going?
Avatar 9:27pm Van in DC:

Irene - thanks for the pics after the fact from live performances
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Irene Trudel:

No, Bronwyn, I hadn't heard about your Brel show. Thanks for the info. And Hi Linda and Van!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Thanks :) it's going really well! Imagine a bunch of earnest college freshmen learning Brel songs and you have an idea of what my semester has been like. Introducing his songs to a 2015 student body is important to me.
  9:29pm Linda Lee:

thanks so much for this set, Irene. perfect for this very rainy night.
  9:30pm Linda Lee:

so they're receptive? comprehending?
Avatar 9:30pm Van in DC:

I saw the Super Blood Moon over the DC music fest . Daughter was there. Awesome.
  9:31pm Linda Lee:

@Van .. sounds lovely!
Avatar 9:32pm Van in DC:

@Linda, thanks, it was spectacular
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Mike East:

I had a harvest moon party and made a "pin the earth's shadow on the moon" game for my daughters and nieces...but I missed the actual eclipse.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Linda: You mean the cast? Yeah, they like the songs, although they're finding them difficult to sing. They like that they're not your typical songs you sing in a musical. They're smarter, funnier, and more dramatic, and it's a great opportunity for them to step out of their comfort zone.
  9:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Listening to an episode of the Beatles-themed podcast 'Fab 4 Free 4 All' about Lennon's best vocals - & they were musing on the influence his pal Nilsson might have had on his singing. Makes sense!...
Avatar 9:34pm Van in DC:

What got me deeply when seeing Daughter live... in their videos, Elena, the lead singer, never ever smiles or makes eye contact with the camera. Live? holy cow. She is so so so sweet. Massive smiles and eye contact. So shy!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Actually performing it might be a different story, I hope people like it when they actually come see it.
  9:36pm Linda Lee:

can't be a bad thing to step outside the zone .. especially as a young person.
@ Mike .. sounds like you were doing the right thing.
  9:37pm Linda Lee:

@Van .. i'm such a philistine i thought you meant you were at the festival with your progeny! i'll have to see what you mean about this band ..
Avatar 9:39pm Van in DC:

@Linda - Please look them up on the Youtubes. ESPECIALLY the Air Studio in London five set gig they did in April 2014 with I think a 10 piece orchestra. Amazing. 4AD label artists by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Mike East:

this is live?! that can't be right...can it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Mike East:

no...it is not.
Avatar 9:41pm Van in DC:

Daughter is from London. I bet Nick knows of them.
  9:42pm Linda Lee:

i will definitely look them up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm melinda:

That first song fit really nicely with the previous set. This one is lovely too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Irene Trudel:

Mike, it was live in August. He was in town for a few shows. Thanks to Gary Olsen of Ladybug Transistor for getting him to the studio for me!
  9:43pm Linda Lee:

truly lovely. can't help thinking of Nick Drake.
Avatar 9:43pm Van in DC:

Truly, and I reserve this, but Elena is a musical goddess.
  9:44pm herb.nyc:

Me goose bumpy
  9:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Reminds me of John Cale - voice mostly. What a rich playlist this has been...
  9:44pm Linda Lee:

we need our goddesses. i've got to see her!
  9:45pm Linda Lee:

Cale, yes, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm melinda:

@Rev Rabbit: John Cale, yes!
Avatar 9:46pm Van in DC:

  9:47pm Linda Lee:

no saying how he'd feel about these impressions .. that his sound recalls others so well ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Mike East:

@Irene - I was referring to the first Nick Garrie track you played which was clearly an album cut...I was confused cuz it was under the "live performance" heading, yet I heard strings among other instruments that I wouldn't have expected in an in studio performance. Then it faded out, and I figured it out. I'm easily confused. What a great track that is, though! Thanks for leading with it.
  9:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Robyn Hitchcock: "What does 'Psychedelic' mean? If someone comes down the stairs in the morning & says the coffee grounds in his cup are 'Psychedelic' - that's what it means'...
  9:51pm Linda Lee:

well.. the utube is something i'll have to access when i'm at a better spot .. only dialup here on the mountain .. only able to do one thing at a time. if that.
  9:53pm Linda Lee:

i'll be happy if this storm doesn't knock the power out.
Avatar 9:53pm Van in DC:

Hey Nick! Play Landmark Fest DC next year! The very first one just ended (went all weekend with over 40 acts over like 6 stages). Daughter and Ben Howard were there! The Lone Bellow were there! and a lot others...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Irene Trudel:

Ah, I see Mike. Definitely an album track, but it "sets the scene" for Nick's interview. Rev. Rabbit, Mr. Hitchcock always seems to have the perfect description for the unexplainable.
  9:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well Robyn emphasizes being a Surrealist - which I think Nick just did too ?...
Avatar 9:59pm Van in DC:

Oooh pics, nice.
Avatar 10:01pm Van in DC:

So the silent fund raiser is poised to start? You know I already have you with a head start Irene, because, you are simply the BESTEST.
Avatar 10:02pm Van in DC:

How tall is Nick? 6' 4" maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Irene Trudel:

I think he is over 6ft. tall, maybe not 6'4" though. All I know is he towered over my 5'5" frame!
  10:07pm P-90:

Joining in late, glad I didn't miss all the good stuff.
  10:08pm Linda Lee:

great to see you both!
Avatar 10:08pm Van in DC:

If you could have one wish for a single day, what would it be? Mine might well be to be tall. It is absolutely true that us short nice guys are doomed. DOOMED.
  10:11pm JakeGould:

Hello. Humid and rainy in NYC, but I’m not complaining.
Avatar 10:14pm bobdoesthings:

weirdly cool and yet the humidity keeps cutting in.. hey irene! just chiming in..
Avatar 10:16pm Van in DC:

Maybe I would wish that I could eat endless banana splits for an entire day and not gain a single calorie.
  10:16pm JakeGould:

@bobdoesthings: It’s the kind of weather that makes you feel like you have a cold coming on.
Avatar 10:17pm Van in DC:

I speak some Thai...
Avatar 10:19pm Van in DC:

Okay, so written in Bangkok, but I thought might have some Thai in it. Nope.
Avatar 10:21pm Van in DC:

Carding people for drinking is now way out of common sense in the US. Sorry Nick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Mike East:

this was great. Beautiful music, charming fellow. kept me from banging my head against the wall since I thought I would be home by now instead of still waiting for some guy to stop diddling on a piano in the studio at work.
Avatar 10:30pm Van in DC:

I like this one
Avatar 10:35pm Van in DC:

A PSA? I'll give you a PSA. *muted* .......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Mike East:

Jacco Gardner, Os Mutantes, and Nick Garrie...and more...that's some bill.
Avatar 10:38pm Van in DC:

One of the first artists I ever remember hearing and knowing who they were.
  10:38pm listening out there:

Cat Stevens. Switching to another stream...
  10:41pm JakeGould:

Whatever, “listening out there.”
Avatar 10:43pm Van in DC:

I hate when music gets political.
Avatar 10:44pm Van in DC:

OMG. Roy Harper!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Mike East:

wow, just looked up the rest of that Utrecht listing...so many amazing bands playing!
Avatar 10:47pm Van in DC:

For the record, early Cat Stevens? Fine. Later? Yikes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Mike East:

ok, this guy finally wrapped in the studio, so I'm headin' to Penn station...hoping the rains don't pour down so I don't have to waste money on a cab.
Thanks for a great show, Irene. This really was a particularly good one and clicky star worthy for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Irene Trudel:

"Catch Bull at Four" was the Last Cat Stevens album I liked. But here and there some of his recent songs have been nice.
Avatar 10:50pm Van in DC:

Clicky start. I've never ever done that even once.

Seems like a scam or something.
Avatar 10:51pm Van in DC:

Clicky star I meant.
Avatar 10:53pm Van in DC:

Recent from Cat Stevens? Was that like... 1978?
  10:54pm JakeGould:

That track is from 1971, yo… Prime Cat Stevens.
Avatar 10:54pm Van in DC:

I mean... Cat Stevens doesn't exist after, what, 1975 or so? 78? 80?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm melinda:

I first heard Which Will covered by Lucinda Williams, didn't know it was a Nick Drake song.
Avatar 10:55pm Van in DC:

Windham Hill artist Lucinda Williams. I love that label.
Avatar 10:57pm Van in DC:

At least I think she is.

I wonder if Irene has ever played anyone from Windham Hill?
Avatar 10:58pm Van in DC:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Irene Trudel:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Clay! As you probably heard, Nick wrote some music with Francis Lai. Hi P-90, redkayak, and Ken. I haven't had a chance to hear Dan's new program. Glad he played Black Sea Hotel. Not enough people know about them!

Beautiful stuff tonight, Irene
Avatar 11:26pm Van in DC:

No, Van, this is just a demo, so the guitars aren't tightly mic'd. Does sound a little sitar-like. Mac, I don't know how the interview with Mr. Lydon/Rotten went. I was at work. Have to catch it on the archives.
