I will report again what I posted a few moments ago on Bill Mac's show: I'm going to look for my What's Going On cassette. I repeat it because I will be finding the cassette while a cassettee-centric show is happening. Maybe I'll resurrect other tapes in the search. So you see how it's all...y'know...

Hey, Tony, have you been keeping tabs on what seems (from my distant vantage point) to be a cassette resurgence, a la vinyl?

I just read that the Columbia House Music Club just filed for chapter 11. Maybe they'll have to repay a penny.

@Dean: I *almost* added a note to that effect...but...yeah.
Avatar 12:16pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff: I'm certainly aware of the cassette resurgence, yes -- tho not too up on the more recent cassette-only releases. I do try to slip a recent cassette release onto this show now and again.

I never keep tabs on cassettes. (Heya, Dean!)

Can anybody roughly identify the year/period of these tapes? Found these online pics randomly, but I have an unopened Sony 30 min. tape of similar packaging/graphics. Just curious. I'm thinking possibly 70s.

Thanks for the cassette link, Dean. Mine's in cardboard inside its cellophane -- that might mean it's from that product period but even before the plastic clamshell boxes came along.

I played a rare Negativland/Don Joyce track from one of the Unsound cassette comps on my show a few weeks back

This cassette? www.discogs.com...

I'm planning to play that thing on a future Tape Hiss. It's great.

Mark Hosler contributes to the Problemist LP, by the way.

Yes, that one. I don't actually have the cassette but got the Negativland track from a fellow Negativland fanatic/collector. Looking forward to hearing it all.

Feeling quite fortunate to be listening live today. All hail appointment radio! (And unlike my other appointments, I don't cool my heels in a waiting room or have to sit on butcher paper like a pound of olive loaf!)

No one here is required to sit on butcher paper -- but at the end of the show you will all be tightly wrapped in cellophane. Wouldn't want you to spoil.

In 2002 a"group" dubbed Omegaman released an album, one song of which was titled "Jef Left," apparently a tribute to the same guy. Maybe it *is* the same guy. http://omegaman.bandcamp.com/album/here-we-go
Avatar 1:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Here's a great D.D.A.A. video: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Jeff Golick:

I'm guessing Jef Left because one of his Fs went missing.

In a previous life, I ran the NYC marathon, wearing letter stickers on my shirt, as is the fashion, so that the cheering throngs could call out my name. One of my Fs fell off at some point, and I did later hear, "Go, Jeff-with-one-F!"

Ok, back to work.
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

This Comelade cassette comes with the most elaborate packaging ever: two cardboard pyramids: rymimg.com...
Avatar 1:36pm
Tony Coulter:

My copy is pyramid-less, unfortunately. Not all copies came with them -- they are not exactly easy to mail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
Jeff Golick:

Wow, Tony, those are impressive structures. All the better to tune into the spheres.

@Dean: re Omegaman, I like that one of the tags for his/their work is "slick emotionless jazz."
  1:42pm
Dean:

When you wanna hear slick emotionless jazz, you gotta hear slick emotionless jazz.

Last night I heard Jimmy LaFave at a nice venue here in town. His drummer, Bobby Kallus, is one of the best in the business. He has a new guitarist, whose name I missed, but imagine LaFave, a huge fan of Dylan, Springsteen, Woody Guthrie, etc., featuring a guitarist in the Marc Ribot/Thurston Moore mold. Really weird, often quite exciting. Looking forward to hearing the band again Thursday night.

would be cool to see a gallery of impressive notable cassette packaging ideas. I remember some female punk band who would mail their cassette out in empty tampon cartons.
