See you back here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Rich in Washington:

I tried pushing the play button extra vigorously, repeatedly, hoping I could make the show start earlier but it didn't work... BBL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm People Like Us:

no, you just have to wait in here like I do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm People Like Us:

funnily enough (although not funny) I just saw what you wrote on the Negativland fb page
  6:52pm vince:

are people here already?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm People Like Us:

oh yes
  6:53pm vince:

Sorry I wasn't here two weeks ago... was just coming back from seeing my father-in-law die
  6:54pm vince:

Don dying was just ---- a 'one-two' punch' for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm People Like Us:

oh no, sorry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm People Like Us:

more Don tonight
  6:56pm vince:

Yeah... talk about 'opposite' ends of the spectrum: He was Stan Ricker, inventor of 'helf-speed mastering', and co-creator of the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm People Like Us:

The last named Over The Edge that Don broadcast was entitled Universe - Part 91, so I'm just doing some more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm People Like Us:

just looking him up... oh wow
what a week (or three)
  6:58pm vince:

I don't know if you remember those 'heavy' records from the late-'70's that had 'Original Master Records' at the top of them... those were his.
  7:00pm vince:

I took the wife on a date to see Negativland in DC, back in 1989... been a fan ever since .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm People Like Us:

ok I have to start pasting now but am listening/reading :)
  7:00pm vince:

Of course... would've never been a fan of yours if I hadn't seen them on the "Hate People Like Us" CD!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm People Like Us:

that's if my show starts
  7:01pm vince:

HA!
Avatar 7:01pm Zepelim:

Hello PLU! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm People Like Us:

hello!
  7:02pm vince:

You can call that the 'moment of silence', if you like!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm People Like Us:

yes, ha ha :)
  7:02pm JakeGould:

Hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm People Like Us:

look at you all here already, very nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Rich in Washington:

Hola, Vicki!
  7:03pm vince:

well... it was kind of a bummer... you weren't here last week
  7:04pm vince:

I thought maybe, you were going to Berkely, to be on the 'Wobbly/Puzzling Evedence" OTE last night.
Avatar 7:04pm Marcel M:

Hellooo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm chris:

so need music after an hour of talkies! yay, Vicki!
Avatar 7:04pm steve:

hey dere
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Rich in Washington:

Enjoyed your last live show here - the Don Joyce show. My condolences. I only met Don a few times and corresponded sporadically over the years. But also a huge fan of his show. Been listening since I've been on the interwebs, even with dialup.
Avatar 7:06pm steve:

is this Harpo's voice?? i read his autobiography and still have never his music until this moment
  7:06pm vince:

I told everyone who would listen, "Don was "Revolution #9"... with a POINT!!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm People Like Us:

good evening :)
yes I saw what you wrote on negativland's page, Rich
no Vince, too far away, couldn't afford it :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm People Like Us:

I have been sending mp3s though, Vince, next best thing I think Don would agree
  7:07pm Mrs P:

Hello Vicki.
Avatar 7:07pm steve:

oh wait nevermind, playlist just updated
  7:07pm ?:

Good evening! Me too with the thanks for the Don Joyce shows. I grew up listening to Over the Edge on KPFA instead of sleeping like I should have. I called in a few times, quietly, to avoid waking my parents.
Avatar 7:08pm ranjit:

oops, that's me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm People Like Us:

for many years I would phone in at 8am and play minidisc down the phone on Over The Edge
Avatar 7:08pm ironybread:

Godammit, I thought Don Joyce and Phil Austin were resources we were going to get to exploit for years to come.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm People Like Us:

hi Ranjit :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm People Like Us:

they ARE ironybread
  7:10pm P-90:

Cheers, PLU and all the other people like us. In DIY Heaven already.
  7:10pm JakeGould:

How man grains are there in irony bread? Only one: A grain of truth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Rich in Washington:

I think '99 was when I first started listening regularly. I used a plain old dial telephone to pipe sound with the earpiece of a headphone clamped to the mouthpiece. It sounded surprisingly good.
  7:11pm JakeGould:

God I just sounded like a ponce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm People Like Us:

no, grains make pearls you know
Avatar 7:12pm Billy Jam:

now tuned in properly - sounding real nice -thanks People Like Us
  7:12pm vince:

Could never stay up to listen to OTE live...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm People Like Us:

hi Billy
Avatar 7:12pm ranjit:

the Over the Edge theme music still gives me teenage flashbacks
Avatar 7:12pm ironybread:

Yes, but I meant in the sense of pressuring them via compliments and endless badgering into making lots of new product.
  7:13pm vince:

Did you all see that picture of Don from 1966, they put on the Neg FB page?
  7:13pm P-90:

Gonna sheath your sword, might as well sheath it to its hilt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm People Like Us:

yes, Vince!
!!!!!
Avatar 7:14pm ironybread:

I used to call into Over the Edge when I was still living in Idaho, in pre-streaming days when I couldn't listen to the show and had no idea of the content except what I could hear coming down the phone...on one show I stayed on for five minutes doing nothing but playing back Bernard Herrman's "Love Theme" from Vertigo over their conversation
Avatar 7:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Firesign stream address anybody didn't know: 192.184.9.79
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm People Like Us:

I too first called in OTE BEFORE broadband and Don would then post me the tape so I could hear it "properly"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm People Like Us:

I'd forgotten that
  7:16pm JakeGould:

Ahhh, those pre-Internet days of respect in the underground.
Avatar 7:16pm Billy Jam:

hi…..thanks for this show……Negativland have always been very close to my heart…..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm People Like Us:

when I first used to tune into WFMU I had no way of listening, I'd just look at the website
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm People Like Us:

then 2 years of buffering on expensive dialup...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Rich in Washington:

the buffering. Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm chris:

hey, Billy Jam, sent you email about sf bay meetup...

back on topic, negativeland is yet another amazing thing of the universe that the great people of fmu land have brought into my life
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm People Like Us:

we take so much for granted - high speed broadband changed so much
the fact that I'm here right now in fact!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Rich in Washington:

For many years, had dial up at home and broadband wasn't available in my area and was so expensive, so listened to lots of internet radio and archives while working in the office.
  7:20pm JakeGould:

@PLU: High speed broadband on your desktop and in your pants! We have computers that you can stick in your pocket that can stream data faster than most average landline connections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Rich in Washington:

You're right, PLU, we take it for granted now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm People Like Us:

yes, tapes of radio shows
I first heard WFMU on a cassette - Ken's Premium "The Happy Listener's Guide.." from the mid 90s
  7:21pm vince:

yeah... who know what that wi-fi's doing to your loins!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm People Like Us:

I was given the cassette in Berlin - a friend who'd been visiting his girlfriend who was a student in NY, and he'd heard the tape playing THROUGH THE WALL of a neighbour and went and knocked on their door
  7:22pm vince:

I still have my Paster Dick cassette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Rich in Washington:

There's this weird ping-pong effect on Shaggs music. I have no idea if it's intentional but it's so maddening. Crazy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm People Like Us:

yes it's wonky
  7:23pm vince:

I didn't get Capt. Beefheart, 'till I heard The Shaggs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm People Like Us:

I like the emphasis on the boom beat rather than the cha beat
so to speak
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Rich in Washington:

I used to tape internet radio while at work to listen to in my car and at home. I recently found a tape of streams of Weirdsville.
Avatar 7:24pm ironybread:

Irwin Chiusid has been playing music by an Australian outsider musician, Waterfall Person, that does something very similar...she's broken all her electronic keyboards in very interesting ways
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Rich in Washington:

Weirdsville, one of the first RealPlayer radio stations I regularly listened to in 99 or so.
  7:27pm vince:

You all might be interested to know, they actually brought "It's All IN Your Head FM" here.. to VEGAS!! What a night it was!
Avatar 7:27pm ironybread:

I'm confident that the surviving members of Negativland will continue recording and touring as promised - from their live shows in the last few years, I know they've got a sweet agglomeration of new tunes/edit pieces that will kill you they're so good - "Like Cattle Act" and "Let's Melt the North Pole", to name just two
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Rich in Washington:

IAIYH is a pretty good show. Was there for Portland OR. Did you get blindfolds, Vince?
Avatar 7:28pm ironybread:

...well, "Like Cattle Act" is technically a really old one, but they've never released it officially
  7:29pm Mrs P:

This show is always wonderful.
  7:29pm vince:

yup.... I was surprised to see the rest of the audience as 'into it' as I was
  7:30pm vince:

unlike, when The Residents played here... a lot of people walked out...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm chris:

this Tomita track is so Stereolab sounding, only more so, if that's possible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm People Like Us:

Yann Tomita is amazing
  7:33pm vince:

You know... I firmly believe there was a time when there were LESS Coke & Pepsi commercials on American TV... thanks to "Dispepsi'!!
  7:33pm vince:

Of course... they're back in FULL FORCE, now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm People Like Us:

shhhh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm People Like Us:

are you all concentrating?
  7:39pm P-90:

The five BEST records of "My Blue Heaven" ever! Maybe.
  7:39pm vince:

LOVE THIS ALBUM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm People Like Us:

yes, wish I had more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm People Like Us:

yes, I like this MUCH more than The Who's version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm listener james from westwood:

For all of me, I much prefer the Haden versions of these songs now.
Avatar 7:40pm ironybread:

Just meditating on how that Percy Faith cut takes me back to my early childhood when disco infected EVERYTHING and was possibly the most embarrassing thing white people ever enjoyed at an ice show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm People Like Us:

so reminds me of WFMU
well you know, the spirit of
  7:40pm vince:

My old friend tried (tried, mind you) to meld Petra's version with the REAL "Who Sell Out" album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm People Like Us:

everything should have an On Ice version
  7:41pm vince:

Her "At The Movies" is quite good, also.
Avatar 7:42pm ironybread:

Nobody was commenting at you just now, Vicki, because we were busy listening to Vicki
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm People Like Us:

I mixed her God Only Knows with The Beach Boys
and Andy Breckman's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm People Like Us:

yes it is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm People Like Us:

so was I, ironybread
  7:42pm mike east:

The result of mike watt giving her a 4 track and a cassette of this record , or something, right?
  7:43pm mike east:

Brilliant
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm People Like Us:

really? I hope so
Avatar 7:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- 4 track jayzhus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm People Like Us:

this Dim Dim track (and album) equally puts me in mind of WFMU, in the 2000's - makes me think of Charlie Lewis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm People Like Us:

and Petra Haden makes me think of Kenny G
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm People Like Us:

lovely WFMU :)
Avatar 7:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...of course many of the 60s Psych Classics were done on 4-track - w/ studios & all tho' of course...but they have that in common w/ LoFi...
  7:45pm vince:

Can't have WFMU, without YOU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Rich in Washington:

Kenny G makes me think of my earliest days listening to WFMU and when I thought Ken's show and Ken's last Ever Radio Extravaganza were done by the same Ken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Rich in Washington:

They're so different.
  7:46pm mike east:

Wider tape than cassette though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm People Like Us:

hey look, Vicki's almost playing dub
Avatar 7:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- oh yes - good mics, boards, Producers - but still hands-on 4-track analog...
  7:48pm vince:

Ya, mon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good evening. August is upon us already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm People Like Us:

yes it just arrived
  7:52pm vince:

Jeez, the show's almost over!
Avatar 7:53pm ironybread:

Not in the colonies - we still got some of that July action going for us. That patriotic month when we celebrate George Washington, who when caught with an axe famously said "I cannot tell a lie, I cut down the gardener"
  7:56pm vince:

So, we'll all be back next week?... yes, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm People Like Us:

better be!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm chris:

Thanks, Vicki!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm People Like Us:

thanks for listening folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm People Like Us:

funnily enough this is probably about the time that the BBC are playing this same track
  7:58pm vince:

have a happy week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm People Like Us:

yes you too!
Avatar 7:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- an hour of wonderful textures & flow. Yars Yars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm People Like Us:

goodnight all
  8:00pm P-90:

Thank you Vicki, thanks and farewell Don, and thankfully, Over The Edge will slither ever onward...
