I don't think I've been able to fully appreciate Dave's wit and wisdom before reading The World's 181 Best-Loved Music Tweets!! Probably because he's too busy during the show, and I don't use Twitter. 5 stars.

I'm using a 2HB now but it's digital. Do you think Brian Eno could have imagined that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm pacific standard simon:

Yes, that's correct.
Avatar 10:24pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: I think you're right. I announced that last week, didn't I?

Hi Dave: You and World Of Echo are namechecked in this article, surely of interest to your playlisteners: www.collectorsweekly.com...

With much commentary from Al Margolis, next week's guest.

And yes, well timed, because Al will be right here next Sunday.

uh oh...Nick Cave?
Avatar 10:33pm Dave Mandl:

@ScottC: Yes, that was terrible news. (His son.)
Avatar 10:34pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Ken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm pacific standard simon:

@Webhamster Henry - I remember storing tapes in wooden kiwi crates!
Avatar 10:35pm coelacanth:

(Nick, that is. his son's probably fine)
Avatar 10:40pm coelacanth:

Thanks for that link W Henry. i'll save it for later. cassettes are still a big part of my life; and it looks like they may become a bigger part again, even.
  10:43pm Listener Robert:

Is that a deterrent to spinning them?
  10:44pm rw:

Yeah, Nick Cave. Super sad. I can't imagine. Really tragic.
  10:46pm rw:

I used to work for a guy named Jay who went by J.

"I'll concede that not putting track titles on your record is 'arty' if you'll concede that it's annoying." -- Dave Mandl
  10:47pm Carmichael:

Heya Dave. Just got back from a college mixer for my to-be college kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Webhamster Henry:

I still have lots and lots of cassettes, some from trading mixtapes, a lot of my own stuff, and of course WFMU airchecks!

Avatar 10:47pm JakeGould:

FWIW, I believe that the tradition of using an initial in lieu of a first name comes from female authors who didn’t want to write under a pseudonym, but wanted to make sure that their name parsed as male or at least not female. For example, J. K. Rowling…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm pacific standard simon:

I think R. Meltzer has gone back to using "Richard" on his books.
Avatar 10:50pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Carmichael. Good luck to your college kid!
Avatar 10:51pm Dave Mandl:

@Jake: True about women, but I know guys who do it too. And also women who make no attempt to hide the fact that they're women.
Avatar 10:51pm coelacanth:

and i used to know a Jeannine who went by "Jay". (not "J")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm pacific standard simon:

Sadly, I must sit in the room with the least airflow to listen to this.
  10:51pm J R R Tolkien:

I wrote "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." Look at all my fancy initials!
Avatar 10:52pm coelacanth:

look at all Eno's fancy initials!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm pacific standard simon:

So fancy that he spelled "Junior" with two "R"s.
Avatar 10:53pm coelacanth:

Avatar 10:54pm Dave Mandl:

@coelacanth: Shoot me.
Avatar 10:56pm coelacanth:

Ha! shoot his parents! (or their parents,or...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm fleep:

Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, born 15 May 1948 and originally christened Brian Peter George Eno.

Shoot him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm pacific standard simon:

One wonders if Roger Eno has a lot of middle names, and, if not, why not?
Avatar 10:59pm coelacanth:

that's a good question,pss.

and fleep,well- at least he had the decency to go by "Eno", or "Brian Eno"!
Avatar 11:02pm JakeGould:

@DaveMandl: “And also women who make no attempt to hide the fact that they're women.” They do this in public? MY LORD! WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO SOCIETY!
Avatar 11:03pm JakeGould:

Also, lots of folks who use initials are—no disrespect—just ponces.
Avatar 11:05pm Dave Mandl:

I meant, they're not using the initial to hide the fact that they're women (which I can understand)--they just want to use the initial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm pacific standard simon:

Hmm, Roger Eugene Eno is eleven years younger than Brian. Perhaps their parents had run out of spare names by then.
Avatar 11:08pm Dave Mandl:

Or Brian said, "Don't ever do that again!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm pacific standard simon:

Cartoonist M.K. Brown was married to cartoonist B. Kliban. No extra points for knowing which was the man and which was the woman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Webhamster Henry:

Hint: one is not a meatloaf, M.K. Brown wrote one of my favorite cartoons, called Guide Dogs. www.youtube.com...
Avatar 11:13pm coelacanth:

my maccrookbook crashed,but i;m back...but i think i should crash soon.
'been a long work day on little drunken sleep.

...OR, they used all the names they liked on Brian- thinking he'd be the only one. then when another came along they just pulled "Roger" & "Eugene" out of a hat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm pacific standard simon:

The Fillmore West is now a car dealership.
Avatar 11:15pm coelacanth:

aw man...i don't wanna miss Bill Mac!
(but i have to)
  11:15pm ScottC:

What exactly is an "Apple Bank"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm pacific standard simon:

One tofu dog for Mr. Mandl!
Avatar 11:17pm coelacanth:

i'll wait 'till the next one that's not meat-based.
Avatar 11:17pm Dave Mandl:

Wow, I love M. K. Brown, and I had no idea she was a woman!
Avatar 11:18pm Dave Mandl:

She used to do a lot of stuff for National Lampoon (and so did B. Kliban).
Avatar 11:20pm Dave Mandl:

I'm *pretty* sure Kliban is a guy.
Avatar 11:21pm coelacanth:

that cartoon went well with Roswell Rudd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm pacific standard simon:

The M.K. Brown archive, for after the show:

Avatar 11:25pm Dave Mandl:

That's great, thanks!
Avatar 11:28pm coelacanth:

...o.k. (short for okay) i'm out.
Thank you Dave:Brilliant as always!
good night animals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm fleep:

You can kind of slow dance to this. Adios, fish!
Avatar 11:30pm JakeGould:

FWIW, I believe the Filmore East is a bank on the ground floor, but an NYU theater studio on the second floor. NYU owns NYC culture in the Village nowadays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm pacific standard simon:

This sounds like something Ken Goldsmith would have done as a DJ premium.
  11:31pm rw:

for those in the Los Angeles area there's a museum exhibition about Bill Graham (who started the Fillmore):

The show opens with an apple barrel... "Perhaps the most meaningful item in the exhibition, Kirschner said, is the original apple barrel that greeted guests at the Fillmore with a sign that read, "Take One or Two." Concertgoers came to expect the barrel over the years, but nobody seemed to know why it was there.

The Skirball discovered the answer while researching the show. When Graham was in the French orphanage, he and another child were sent to a neighboring apple orchard to pilfer fruit to feed their hungry friends. It was an experience Graham carried with him his whole life."

  11:31pm rw:

Sorry if that was too long. I thought it was interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- maybe that's better than if they were still big Rawk venues w/ lousy shows...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...isn't there still something called the 'Filllmore' in SF?
  11:36pm ScottC:

A sore esophagus... And it killed him...
Avatar 11:37pm Dave Mandl:

But this was 20 years earlier?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm pacific standard simon:

Yes, Rabbit, that's the original Fillmore Auditorium on Filmore Street. Graham moved the Fillmore organization to the Carousel Ballroom at Market & Van Ness and renamed it The Fillmore West (that's the one that closed in '71). The current Fillmore re-opened many years later.
  11:38pm ScottC:

Long process...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm Ike:

Apparently this Rosamunde place has veg sausages.
Avatar 11:39pm Dave Mandl:

@Ike: Oh baby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

George smoked a lot. & other things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm pacific standard simon:

I wonder if your Rosamunde is connected to the two Rosamunde sausage eateries in San Francisco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the legendary Rosamunde East.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm pacific standard simon:

A length of braised kale stalk in a bun, with onions and mustard.
Avatar 11:44pm JakeGould:

I saw a thing on the Internet about kale being bad for you now. Going back to just eating cancer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Ike:

Plus, merguez, which one of our French commenters was espousing recently. Yelp reviewer: "I'm still shocked that I was served such good mergez at a non-north-African establishment."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm pacific standard simon:

Those places had fantastic Weisswursts. I drool, just thinking about it.
  11:45pm Carmichael:

Evergood is the legendary sausage place in the Bay. For carnivores, I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm joeray:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm pacific standard simon:

Sounds like the same people, Ike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm Ike:

Yes, their website indicates it's the same as in SF.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm pacific standard simon:

Checking it -- I need one of those t-shirts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Īke:

@ScottC@11:15, sadly it's not a bank that only stores your fruit in safety deposit boxes. It's just a regular boring old money bank. (Switch to a credit union, everybody. I'm not saying banks are run by baby-eating lizard men who want to crash our economy so that folks will sell them more babies, but....)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the legendary R. East indeed. Enjoy !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm pacific standard simon:

VERY few things make me miss San Francisco, but that's one of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm pacific standard simon:

And it is, indeed Still Light, Outside, here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Ĩkє:

@PSS, I may or may not have packed your swag a few days ago. You're on B. Island, no?

Thanks Dave! Can't believe it's already over! Have a great week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm pacific standard simon:

Yes, that's me. There's a couple items missing, but I'm taking it up with Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm joeray:

Thanks Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Ĩkє:

Oh crap, that could be my fault if the missing items are on the manifest (or receipt or whatever it's called). If so, my apologies.
