We'll explore some of the best -- and strangest -- the medium has to offer, from forgotten pre-revolution Iranian songbirds to Japanese and American tape experiments of the 1980s and '90s to obscure Brazilian punk, New Jersey Hardcore and Moroccan rock and roll.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Gary:

Avatar 7:09pm steve:

Gary i was at the station yesterday and personally mailed you your swag!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Carmichael:

Long ago, I saw a wreck in front of me on the freeway. I stopped to help a Viet lawn mower guy who got carted off to the hospital. After they left, I saw a cassette tape lying at my feet, inscribed with "Nguyen & Sons". I put it in my pocket and brought it home. I get skittish every time I think about playing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Gary:

That's an incredible story, Carmichael, seriously. I'll be playing a Vietnamese cassette later this set with a story of its own ...
Avatar 7:18pm northguineahills:

I actually have heard of Cyanamid (the band).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

NGH! They're apparently legendary. If you Google them, one of the WFMU DJs proper -- I can't remember who now -- talks about working in a yard supply store (?) and meeting the singer, who buys a hose from him ... I gotta look it up, hold on!
  7:20pm Lucky:

Hey Gary, nice topic!
The Eshete track could be from this (not sure, I just tuned in):
  7:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Gary:

It was John Allen: "I once sold Danny Cyanamid a garden hose. I was working in a garden center and I said "hey, you're the singer in Cyanamid.". He was like, "wow, no one in the world knows who I am...I guess I'm gonna have to buy this garden hose"
Avatar 7:21pm steve:

is there anything better than lost and found punk demos on cassette... i'll never stop kicking myself for selling all my homemade nj punk cassettes from the 90s...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Gary:

Lucky! Lemme take a look ... Doug! Nice to see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Gary:

@Lucky: That's the one, yes!
  7:31pm Lucky:

Hey, are these the Burmese Chipmunks? Haha...
  7:39pm doca:

Hi, @Gary! Thanks for gracing us with the sentence "for a while I was obsessed with Burmese hip hop", that's why I listen to WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Gary:

Hi Doca!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Santos L Halper:

Hi Gary, enjoying the cassetulant frenzy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Gary:

Avatar 7:53pm Holly in NC:

Ooh, nice to catch Drakkar Band :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Gary:

I love this album so much, Holly ... Did you know that it was the best-selling album of all time in Cambodia? And self-released by Drakkar Band on cassette ... I think it went through three editions of 20,000, something like that, and then of course the Khmer Rouge put an end to all that the next year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 7:56pm Holly in NC:

I did not know that. Except for the Khmer Rouge part :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Gary:

Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Gary:

Are you back from Chicago, UM?
Avatar 7:56pm Holly in NC:

Hola, @UM! Thank you so MUCH for autographed cd!!!!!!!!!!! xo
Avatar 7:57pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary - catch the rest on the archive as always!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Gary:

Night, Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Uncle Michael:

It's a Wednesday without my eyes glued to baseball. I'm happy to be here.

Holly, I'm glad to have been able to personalize one for you. I was delighted to do it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm listener james from westwood:

fun stuff so far!
Avatar 8:08pm hyde:

hmmm, tuned in just in time for talk of Klaatu. that i didn't expect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Gary:

I am embarrassed to admit I followed Klaatu up through whatever album had "Calling Occupants" on it. My grandmother loved them, btw. We sometimes listened to them together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm SeanG:

love your show Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

Aww, thanks, Sean!
Avatar 8:14pm hyde:

@Gary i do still love "calling occupants".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Uncle Michael:

I have to say, the Carpenters' version puts Klaatu's to shame.
Avatar 8:16pm hyde:

@UM no argument there
Avatar 8:16pm northguineahills:

So, Worst Korea? (if not North Korea?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Gary:

@UM What Hyde said
Avatar 8:20pm Holly in NC:

@UM - what you, hyde and Gary said ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Uncle Michael:

I haven't played it in 2015, yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Uncle Michael:

We have a storm brewing. The second one today. I went to work in the think of the first one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Gary:

We actually had what looked like hail-sized rain drops during a downpour this morning, but it seems to have cleared up. I remember storms being more intense, generally, in the midwest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Uncle Michael:

It's been so wet this year. We just decided to postpone some tree work we had scheduled for next week due to the potential for heavy equipment on soft ground.
  8:29pm steve:

studios are still using reel to reel!
Avatar 8:31pm hyde:

i got a bunch of good Mexican hardcore from Terminal Escape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gary:

Hyde, do you know this blog: stalkingduppi.blogspot.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Gary:

Thanks, Steve!
Avatar 8:38pm hyde:

@Gary huh, no. can't say i know much about anything posted there, either. interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Polyus:

Late again, dangit. On the positive side, my Bodega Pop premium arrived a couple of days ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Gary:

Hi Polyus! Glad to hear it made it safely through the mail!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Uncle Michael:

I was just at the dining room sliding door watching this year's litter of raccoons. Mama's got four this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Gary:

Awesome! Hey, are you still posting the tomato plant (?) pics? I feel like I haven't seen one in a while
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Polyus:

Just gotta screeeeeam!
  9:03pm Doug Schulkind:

But how are your turtles, Uncle Michael?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Gary:

He's got turtles, too? I'm living in the wrong city ...
Avatar 9:04pm quinn:

this is amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Uncle Michael:

The turtles seem to have gone underground. I posted the tomato update on Tuesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Uncle Michael:

I'll get the raccoons posted in a couple of days. Two of the young are still too shy to pose. They headed back to the trees while mom and two others hung out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Ike:

I dig it.
Avatar 9:13pm hyde:

this is hard to read to
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Gary:

Sorry, Hyde! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Gary:

Avatar 9:17pm hyde:

heh, i liked it! but i only got through like two paragraphs ;)
  9:19pm Little Fyodor:

Wow, just tuned in during The Jets, and looking over the playlist, Joseph Nechnvatal is the first one I've previously heard of! That's only surprising cause I was a 1980's cassettester myself (and deejay playing cassettes into the 90's)....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Gary:

Hey, Little Fyodor -- I'm impressed you'd heard of him, actually ... I hadn't heard of him before doing research for that earlier show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Uncle Michael:

I just missed a bit of the show watching a mother deer graze while her two fawns ran around the neighbor's yard like goofballs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Gary:

Aw man, it's a zoo!
Avatar 9:51pm hyde:

i had two adult wild turkeys and a brood of poults the other day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Polyus:

Oh this Alive She Died track is fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Uncle Michael:

It's definitely one of the best things about my home, Gary. I thought about that over the weekend when I was in Chicago. I like being connected to nature. Someday this place will be more than I can take care of and I'll really miss it.

hyde, we haven't had turkeys here since spring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Gary:

We're going to end with a "special" "bang," kids
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Gary:

When the GF and I finally move out of NY, I wonder if it'll be somewhere where there's nature-like activity
Avatar 9:57pm hyde:

thanks Gary!
Avatar 9:57pm northguineahills:

Thanks Gary, effing A show again! This sounds like a a band that wants to be a death metal band, but they forgot their guitars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Gary:

Thanks, Guys! See you somewhere soon!
