Live performance by Eszter Balint with Chris Cochrane
You might know Eszter Balint best as an actress, with key roles in last season's "Louie" on F/X and in Jim Jarmusch's film "Stranger Than Paradise" from a few years ago. But Balint has an alternate role as a songwriter and violinist, with several albums to her credit. Eszter's latest album, "Airless Midnight," has just been released and includes some masterful and provocative guitar work from Chris Cochrane, Marc Ribot, Dave Schramm, with singer/songwriter Sam Phillips on harmonies. Eszter Balint, along with guitarist Chris Cochrane, joined Irene for a live set.

Hello Jake! First dibs on comments.
  9:20pm JakeGould:

Kinda like pullet eggs.
  9:26pm Peter K.:

Some people say there's too much violins on the radio, but I don't believe it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Irene Trudel:

Ha ha, Peter! That would be sax and violins.
  9:34pm shanghi1:

Irene that was beautiful
  9:53pm jorj:

sounds great...does anyone know what kind of preamp is on that guitar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Irene Trudel:

Which one? Chris plays through a Fender Princeton amp with efx pedals and Eszter through a Fender Twin Reverb (both new-ish amps).
  10:00pm jorj:

Not quite sure... the number prior to this one. Are they through microphones, or direct lines? Thanks!
  10:10pm jon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Irene Trudel:

Wow, Jake! Very cool to have a picture. I'll add it to the playlist later when I add photos.
  10:24pm JakeGould:

@Irene: If you look up the address the place the building once stood is now the Clearview Chelsea Theater. Torn down with others for that theater it seems. cinematreasures.org...
  10:24pm jon:

nice link jakegould. thnx for that pic

  11:05pm KP:

Great stuff, Irwin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for that, Irwin! Felt like the ensemble was having great fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Irwin:

Sun Ra played at Squat Theater 47 times between 1979 and 1982. Lots of performances were recorded. Some can be heard on the recent digital releases RA TO THE RESCUE, AURORA BOREALIS, and VOICE OF THE ETERNAL TOMORROW.

I'm here Irene

I'm here, too. Listening from Wellington, New Zealand. Hello from the future! You know, international dateline and all that.
  11:19pm jon:

hi irwin.

this has been great irene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm mcginniwa:

Oh random trivia that is sort of related to playlist. I was working on a website for Marc Ribot (community activist site for musicians) when I moved to NZ ten years ago. Site didn't stand the test of time, but NZ has for me.
  11:25pm lynnet:

remember the squat theater very well! fave hangout at the time. saw sun ra there for sure. beautiful show tonight, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm mcginniwa:

Forgot to say I'm digging the show!
  11:41pm Listener Robert:

That's OK, Ms. Trudel, we're typing while listening -- even some of us who are driving.
  11:53pm Listener Robert:

Darn, I can't shake this mental picture: "What's lovely as ivory?" makes me think of soap commercials. It's like the generation that can't hear Beethoven's 9th Symphony without hearing, "Good night, Chet."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Irwin:

Ben Mason! Great tune. Thanks, Irene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for all the tunes, Irwin! And everybody else, thanks for listening. Catch you next week.
  11:59pm Listener Robert:

Thanks for the music & the lightning bugs.

Avatar 10:08am Van in DC:

Ha, okay, the actual album name for Rasputina is in fact "Unknown"...
Avatar 1:22pm Van in DC:

Thanks Eszter and Chris for that great live set!
Avatar 4:09pm Van in DC:

Oh wow, I don't think I've ever heard Terre Roche alone... only with The Roches. Nice.
Avatar 4:14pm Van in DC:

That Johanna Warren selection was really nice too
Avatar 4:15pm Van in DC:

Saving the last set for later...
Avatar 10:06am Van in DC:

So yeah, last set...
Avatar 10:17am Van in DC:

Glad I came back for that last set...because, OOOH! PICS! Loved the show, thanks Irene
