That "Jazz Messengers" hard-bop comp you put together still gets regular play on my way to work in NYC. It's like, the quintessential "get on the train and go to work" album.

great track - is Roy on this? Mind going....

Love that whole era Blacktooth--all the early Blue Note years, the first Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock records too!

This isn't a waltz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Blacktooth:

@Mark - Agreed! For lack of a better description, I liken it to the "punk rock" of jazz. Not the best metaphor, I realize. But, I think (among other things) it's the speed of the music that I dig. Just fast, fast, fast...

Used to work with Primus a little bit... This was early on and I wasn't too familiar with them. A guy comes in with the new album art and I thought he was a messenger. I talked to him for about 20 mins and go the impression he was a roadie or a guitar tech or something. I ask him how long he had worked with the band and he says " I've been the guitarist for a long time" moral of the story - know what your clients look like!

Great show as usual, now with Funny Playlist Picture. Who could ask for anything more? And I'm wondering which FMU show is gonna score an interview, maybe even live set, with Arwen...?

hmm. i agree with you there too- and diana ross... all 3 have proven to be very unpopular opinions. (especially in a college town, where folks are just learning new music, and don't know a lot of these singers' contemporaries.)

Mike East:

@P90 - they said it wasn't his, but my coworker had been playing that piano just before the rehearsal, and there was no blood on it when he finished. We threw an upright in the room to make them happy, so it worked out okay. Weird situation...which we are used to around here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
coelacanth:

i hope he's alright.
  5:07pm
P-90:

RIP Kozmic Blues and Big Brother guitarist, arranger, songwriter Sam Andrew, someone else we lost in just the first half of this year.
Janis originally sang in a much more traditional blues style, the "overwrought wailing" was insisted upon by bandmates and management, because they considered it a style that their audience at the time would embrace. Janis herself was never totally comfortable with that style, but it and she were def embraced...
Avatar 5:11pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I always thot no one made you feel more faster than Janis Joplin. She had a big loud voice. She influenced more male Rock singers than is generally credited...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
coelacanth:

P-90 i've heard a few early recordings of Janis in a bar or café, covering "traditional" blues in a "traditional" style...by far my favorite of what i've heard of her. (which is a lot)

You play more jazz than any of the other DJs. It's one of the things about your show I really enjoy. I like Sam Rivers a lot, but the only recording of him that I have is Tony Williams's "Life Time" album. He really plays great on it, though.
