Every show starts with the ’70s! We’ll rediscover forgotten rockers, revisit unfairly maligned disco beats and replay power-pop favorites. Next: plenty of new releases, occasional live bands and more. Don’t let the nickname confuse you.

Listener comments!

Avatar 9:02pm Holly in NC:

What a great version! All about CanCon tonight!
Love ya, efd!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm efd:

the first set, at least! Nice to see you here, Holly!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm efd:

maybe the second set too, we'll see.
Avatar 9:06pm Holly in NC:

Do you happen to have the original and far superior version of Sloan's "Underwhelmed" (not the later lp version, which is lackluster).

Note I didn't start out by mentioning Rush, good me good me.... good listeners get treats? ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Polyus:

The Guess Who, my first concert. Original members: zero. Members who had even met the original members: probably also zero.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm efd:

Holly, I'd only have whatever's in the WFMU library, which I think is just the LP version.

There IS a Rush song I'd play, though! :)
Avatar 9:10pm Holly in NC:

Rush's cover album, while grand, does not count :-)
  9:11pm cheri:

good evening all! great to see you efd and holly!
  9:12pm jon:

hi efd, holly, cheri, and polyus
  9:12pm cheri:

hope you're feeling well, holly.
Avatar 9:14pm Holly in NC:

@Cheri - I am, thank you very much for asking. And efd's show will make me feel even better!
  9:15pm cheri:

efd, burton Cummings is really cool! thanks for playin!
  9:16pm JakeGould:

Avatar 9:16pm Loretta:

hi everyone!
Avatar 9:17pm steve:

  9:17pm JakeGould:

So is Laura Adler the original owner of the LP version you just played? I love used record history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm efd:

JakeGould, that's correct!

Greetings one and all! Thank you for sharing part of your Canada Day with The Evan "Funk" Davies show!
  9:19pm JakeGould:

@Evan: You are a mensch for giving Laura the shout out. Kudos!
Avatar 9:22pm Holly in NC:

Liking aut'chose. Need to grab laundry, brb
Avatar 9:24pm Holly in NC:

Actually liking Panic a bit more than aut'chose. Doh!
  9:24pm cheri:

evan, don't you just love that "STAND TALL" tune by burton? one of my favorites!
  9:31pm JakeGould:

Bryan Adams! Rush! Kim Mitchell! MIGHT AS WELL GO FOR SODA!
  9:31pm Cooh John:

I listened to CKLW as a kid.
Avatar 9:33pm Folsom:

I used to listen to Cub back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Kat in Chicago:

I love that you still have records you picked up on a high school field trip, EFD!
  9:35pm JakeGould:

My first field trip in school was in 2nd grade. We went down to the boiler room and the maintenance guy showed us how the boiler worked.
Avatar 9:36pm Holly in NC:

@Jake I hope to god that's not a euphemism...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Kat in Chicago:

That sounds more like show and tell (which doesn't make it sound like any less of a euphemism, of course). I think you have to board a bus for it to qualify as a field trip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Kat in Chicago:

Is this the same Edward Bear that did "Last Song"? This is way way better.
  9:39pm cheri:

grand show tonight, efd! i'm really loving it!
  9:40pm JakeGould:

@Holly: No. No euphemism. He showed us the boiler room and even the incinerator. Our school even in the 1970s used an incinerator to burn garbage. I would pass by can upon can of carbonized, burned refuse ready for pick up every day as part of my school experience.
  9:40pm JakeGould:

Bang a gong! Get a best friend! Get it on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm efd:

Kat, yes it is! In fact, it was the b-side to "Last Song" if you can believe that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Kat in Chicago:

That's crazy. "Last Song" shoulda been the B-side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Jupiter & Venus are bright in the western sky this evening. Very close to each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm efd:

"Last Song" should have been the Z-side, quite frankly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Kat in Chicago:

Avatar 9:47pm Holly in NC:

Who is this Gino Soccio?
  9:48pm JakeGould:

Edward Bear and the case of the curious single sleeve. What is up with that design? www.discogs.com...
  9:49pm JakeGould:

Gino Soccio: www.waxpoetics.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm efd:

Canadian disco artist - I think "Try It Out" (on the same LP) might have been his biggest hit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Kat in Chicago:

@Holly Italo-disco producer inexplicably hailing from Canada
  9:50pm cheri:

hello efd, like I said before i'm enjoying the show tonight.grand tunes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm efd:

yes, thank you cheri.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Kat in Chicago:

Jake, that sleeve is peculiar indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm efd:

This will aid in your understanding of this Chixdiggit! song if you're not a hockey fan: sportingnewsarchive.tumblr.com...
  9:55pm Carmichael:

Heya Evan and folks.
  9:57pm Carmichael:

Dude, you played Edward Bear. SM Ken would be upset that they are Canadian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm efd:

The truth always hurts.
  10:00pm JakeGould:

@Kat: In the 1970s it was like everything was brown, wood-grained and there was moderately competent handwriting that was barely calligraphy everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Kat in Chicago:

Oh, I was there, Jake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Kat in Chicago:

Wow I still really like this Chilliwack tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm efd:

I don't remember now which station in Boston used to play this (the single version, at least), but I've loved it since then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Kat in Chicago:

I used to hear it in college, on a commercial station the call letters of which escape me. They played the full version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Kat in Chicago:

(station was in Columbia, MO)
  10:05pm clinton hensley:

My middle name is Canada. Parents weren't hippies. Grandma's maiden name. Hey, Evan! I don't know how I'm still awake, but hey!
Avatar 10:07pm Holly in NC:

Thank you @efd, @Kat, and esp. @Jake for Wax Poetics link - I don't have that issue!
To explore....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Fuzzy:

RE: That Chilliwack song: Betcha it was WCOZ in Boston -- that was my go-to rock station back in the early-80's high school days. This song would have been right up their alley.
Avatar 10:08pm Folsom:

OK efd needs to go on Sportsy Talk, bond with Jim the Poet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Kat in Chicago:

My adoptee Jim the Poet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Kat in Chicago:

Which reminds me, I don't have my swag yet. Cause for concern?
Avatar 10:11pm Folsom:

Goddamn Dave Hill also a big hockey fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm efd:

I don't think so, Kat. I haven't received mine yet either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Kat in Chicago:

Haha in that case I won't worry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm efd:

Fuzzy, could be, but generally I was more of a WBZ-FM and WBCN listener back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm efd:

hey Clinton, nice to see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Fuzzy:

WBCN: could be. WBZ-FM: before my time!
  10:16pm cheri:

well efd and listeners, got to check out for the night but I got my radio tuned in, happy 4th! holly i'm glad you're feeling much better. night!
Avatar 10:21pm BadGuyZero:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm efd:

hey BGZ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Ike:

I like the propulsion of this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Kat in Chicago:

Hookworms is the first new-to-me rock band I've gotten excited about in quite some time.
  10:25pm Carmichael:

Daddy loves his Chilliwack ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Kat in Chicago:

LOL @ Wikipedia: "This article is about the musical act. For the parasitic nematode, see Hookworm."
  10:28pm Carmichael:

My next band will be called The Parasitic Nematodes.
  10:34pm JakeGould:

My next band with be called “The Propulsion of this Track.”
Avatar 10:39pm Folsom:

Just to be safe, I assume the Hookworm set will be on the archives?
  10:39pm John Arthur:

Doesn't every show get archived?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Stevel:

Nots! Good band. See 'em live.
Avatar 10:41pm Holly in NC:

Nots are a very good band indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Kat in Chicago:

I'm signing off comments but will continue to listen. A good night to all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm efd:

Nearly all shows do get archived, but occasionally a band or label or management will ask that we not archive something. However, I'm pleased to say that as far as I know the show with the Hookworms set will be archived as per usual.
Avatar 10:48pm Folsom:

@efd thanks, I wasn't sure how Primavera stuff was archived. Normally I don't listen to the whole show live, but I have tomorrow off so today is special.
  10:51pm cheri:

note to evan-happy Canada day and happy & safe july 4th weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Uncle Michael:

Greets, peeps.
Avatar 10:57pm Holly in NC:

Nic Hessler new to me, I like. Rest of LP any good?

Greetings UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Uncle Michael:

Holly, hi! Yes, the Hessler album is very good.
  10:59pm clinton hensley:

Signing out. Long 72 hours. When Dylan & I passed through the Holland Tunnel we thought about you guys. :)
Avatar 10:59pm BadGuyZero:

It's on Captured Tracks. It's good!
  10:59pm cheri:

i'm glad you're feeling a lot better, holly.
Avatar 11:03pm Holly in NC:

Thank you, Cheri! But this a long haul thing, and will get wildly boring to discuss. Baring miracle cure or sudden death, lets assume my health is boring ;-) Nic Hessler not boring!
Avatar 11:13pm northguineahills:

Howdeez, Holly! Hope all is souper duper, everything else notwithstanding! Hugs from afar!
Avatar 11:14pm northguineahills:

EFD: I almost called for those tix, but then I heard it's tomorrow, and I already have plans (sonovabitch!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm efd:

ah, too bad! But at least you realized before winning!
Avatar 11:20pm Kelly Jones:

Loving, loving LOVE-ING the show, dude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Holly. Sending my best wishes to you tonight.
Avatar 11:23pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm efd:

yeah, me too ngh!

Thanks Kelly, nice to see you here! Glad you're enjoying it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Uncle Michael:

Baseball season plays hell with my radio listening. I feel like I haven't been here in ages.
Avatar 11:27pm Holly in NC:

Thank you Ken & NGH :-)

Now I need to check out Pleiades also. Maybe I have a fangirl crush on Gap Dream Gabe?
  11:28pm cheri:

thanks for all the terrific tunes from Canada, efd!
  11:29pm cheri:

goodnight holly
Avatar 11:30pm Kelly Jones:

Birdstriking... my new favorite band ever, for now...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Uncle Michael:

Good to see you all, however briefly. I've a long day tomorrow, so I'm going to listen to the end of the show away from the keyboard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm efd:

thanks for popping in, UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Kelly - Did you catch Birdstriking on 100% Whatever a couple weeks ago? www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:45pm Folsom:

That skunk song is really good.
  11:46pm Santos L Halper:

Seven Sisters, doncha'know
Great tunes Evan, merci!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm efd:

Folsom, yeah, there's a few good tracks on that comp. And it's a name-your-own-price download, at least for now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am Ken From Hyde Park:

Hope your Canada Day was nice! Good night.
  12:02am P-90:

Thanks, efd!
