so creepy. the begging in the end lol
Avatar Tue. 6/23/15 6:30am djsheilab:

@mmoore I think producers/ writers liked to take the piss with female singers back in the day. The Crystals "Let's Dance (the Screw). And He Hit Me (and it felt like a kiss). UGH.
Avatar Tue. 6/23/15 6:34am mmoore:

@djjsheilab Ya that sounds about right. Christ Kerri. I wonder what she was thinking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/23/15 6:41am ausmanx:

Carole King said later she was ashamed to have written "And He Hit Me" (esp after she suffered domestic violence herself). but the line was originally from "Carousel". the best song i've ever heard on the subject is Billy Bragg's "Levi Stubbs Tears", i reckon

Hola, SheilaB
Avatar Tue. 6/23/15 6:45am djsheilab:

For @pierro the Italian! Hello @kp! @ausmanx Didn't know Carole King regretted "He Hit Me." Makes sense. I don't know "Carousel." Who did it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/23/15 6:48am Parq:

Loved that Dinah. She was *so* one of a kind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/23/15 6:48am Adrian in London:

Just arrived: better late than never. Hello from London! We're ready to get sad here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/23/15 6:52am ausmanx:

"Carousel" the 40s musical... and of course the great Adam Curtis used the title of the song for one of his great films (about American popular culture), and then Spiritualised gave a great retort with "She Kissed Me (It Felt Like a Hit)".
Avatar Tue. 6/23/15 7:00am djsheilab:

@adrian in London Morning! Sadness arrives at 8am. @ausmaux, well there's one to add to the list. Thank you. Adam Curtis....one of my heroes.

@adrian in London Isn't it dreamy? Originally an instrumental by David Whitaker.

That is the best Afghan Whigs song! The only one I like. Was it a CD single bonus track? Looking forward to sad song hour...

@todd-o-phonic todd! They made the giddiest of records. I wonder if they're aware of their massive airplay at FMU?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/23/15 7:55am Adrian in London:

@djsheilab I'm busy looking at Discogs right now…
  Tue. 6/23/15 7:59am P-90:

This whole show is "the giddiest"! Or maybe the "Gidget-est." or maybe both...

There goes my theory this would be about love songs
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:07am tino:

townes always seemed more hopeless than sad
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/23/15 8:12am Adrian in London:

Just remembered, has anyone seen the Guy Maddin film The Saddest Music in the World? Isabella Rossellini plays a brewing heiress with a glass leg full of beer who organises a competition for musicians worldwide to come and sing the saddest song in the world. It's marvellous, silly and beautiful.
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:12am P-90:

Townes has that Country thing-- there's just a tiny bit of his sense of humor that always shows and deflates the "fucking depressing" quality.
Avatar Tue. 6/23/15 8:13am djsheilab:

@tino the feeling of hopelessness is sad, no? Melancholy, devastation, the blues, hopelessness, it's all included here.
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:14am tino:

I used to play wild horses on the juke box to make the entire bar sad.
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:14am P-90:

Roger Miller, on the other hand, famous for the humor in his songs, but he could find the genuine note of melancholy in anything. Was he a Scorpio I wonder?
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:16am tino:

true..hopelesslessness is the saddest of all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/23/15 8:17am Parq:

The barefoot diva! Another female singer whose voice, when first heard, gave me one of the most memorable "wow, who's that!" moments of my music-listening life. Sodade is an incredibly gorgeous recording.
Avatar    Tue. 6/23/15 8:18am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Adrian: "The Saddest Music In The World" is a wonderful film. @Tino...sorry, but I can top "Wild Horses"...I once played 'Holocaust" by Big Star at The Beachcomber in Seaside Heights, NJ. Joe Belock is my witness! When I looked for it the next summer I found out they removed it....
Avatar Tue. 6/23/15 8:19am djsheilab:

@parq I had never heard it until Rob Weisberg suggested it for this show. What a heartbreaking beauty!
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:19am Bob:

Townes's Second Lovers Song is very tender, very melancholy, certainly not hopeless.
Avatar Tue. 6/23/15 8:22am vietnam_veterinarian:

You can just play all of Bubble and Scrape please
Avatar Tue. 6/23/15 8:23am djsheilab:

I shall watch "The Saddest Music In The World" before getting my next melancholy set together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/23/15 8:23am Parq:

@Todd: "Joe Belok is my witness" is my new stock phrase for emphasizing that I'm telling the truth. ""C'mon, Parq, really?" Joe Belok is my witness!
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:26am tino:

dylan just added willie's 'sad songs and waltzes' to his set list.
Avatar    Tue. 6/23/15 8:29am Guido from Cologne:

... huauauaaaaaahhh ... I'm soooo säääääd .... sniff ... sniff ... sniff
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:30am P-90:

'Gloomy Sunday" (2003) is a very good movie built around the history of the song of the same name, from 1933, also known as "the Hungarian suicide song."
Avatar Tue. 6/23/15 8:30am pierre:

wow, this one really is hurting, and beautiful
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:30am KP:

When I went to the Grand Old Opry (the new one) Skeeter was sort of in the house band. She of course did this
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:31am LandOfJƏrƏmy:

love this song
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:31am P-90:

Good call on the Skeeter Davis classic! Very high beautiful/sad ratio. Let Joe Belock be my witness.
Avatar Tue. 6/23/15 8:36am djsheilab:

P-90 One of the DJs recommended "Gloomy Sunday." I shall put it on next week's playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 6/23/15 8:37am AndrewC.:

Try Jackson C. Frank - Child Fixin' To Die. More than just a breakup song. :(
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:37am Danimal:

twin peaks music?
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:38am KP:

There is a fictional film "Gloomy Sunday," which is about song of same name. It is supposed to be historically proven as the saddest song of all time and the movie makes that case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 6/23/15 8:38am KRYPT:

Hi, I think the most melancholy song in the world is "For all we know" by Dick Hyman and Mary Mayo, beautiful chills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 6/23/15 8:39am AndrewC.:

Also - for eighties radio one listeners: Nino Rota's Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet... en.wikipedia.org...
  Tue. 6/23/15 8:40am P-90:

There's a whole trove of lore regarding how many actual suicides have been reported to be associated with "Gloomy Sunday." Overstated, of course, but I think at one time the total was said to be over 150 in Europe. You just gotta love anything known as "the Hungarian suicide song." At least I gotta.
