Good Thursday, bonny radio friends. @Claw!: "Joe's Women" sounds like an early 70s movie starring George Segal directed by John Cassavetes.

Just sayin... Hello
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am doctorjazz:

♥ Yeah, @d¢ pät, again, I was listening from my car radio, but it isn't bad, and I usually expect and hear a much clearer signal over the air than the one last night. I wonder if somehow the same signal used for the stream is sent over the air, and sounds worse done that way. If you ever listen to the WFUV Alternate Side show, it also sounds awful listened over the FM band in the car, suspect the stream is somehow compressed and loses something when sent as an FM signal. But, I really don't know this to be true, only that, to my ears, the sound is really bad. (I actually did listen on my phone for a bit last night, and it did sound better, which is why I'm guessing the above about the digital stream).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am doctorjazz:

Of course, this only applies to the NY/NJ area, and that old fashioned gadget, the radio, not to the streamers

Avatar 10:39am Claw!:

Yes, Nate. Lots. I've noticed it's predominantly indie bands. Some names are just too precious or contrived.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am adrian in mpls:

@Nate K -- Yes - Greg definitely named off some of the ones that I can't stand - if the name makes me cringe, it makes it pretty difficult for me to take the music seriously

Black Todd Rundgren!
Avatar 10:45am d¢ pät:

However, one of my favorite names for a band was Come Off It Weller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Greg from Bloomfield:

Pretty much any band name that is a pop culture reference. You're basically telling me before I even hear you that you're out of ideas.

Actually I guess it depends. Black Sabbath, They Might Be Giants, Titus Andronicus...there is room for lenience.

I think that concept could work for songs: "I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives" etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Nate K:

Black Sabbath is, to me, a near perfect name. Especially for that band at that time.

Part of it is that you come up with a name when you're, say, 18, and then ten years later if you're lucky you've built that name up...and then you're 28 with some dumbass name you came up with before your prefrontal cortex was even fully developed.

Actually Black Flag is the best name ever.
  10:55am Dean:

Beg to differ, @Marcel. Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am melinda:

Death Cab for Cutie is one of my least favorite names. If it is a pop reference I don't get it. Sounds like an inside joke that should have stayed inside.
  10:55am John Arthur:

@Claw! Haha thanks
Avatar 10:56am βrian:

Some say Crucifixus nailed it.
  10:56am John Arthur:

@Melinda...I'm with you with death cab. I despise that name.
Avatar 10:56am V Priceless:

@ melinda - they took that from a tune by The Bonzo Dog Band.
  10:57am Brendan:

Gee this sounds swell!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Nate K:

@Melinda, it's a Beatles/Bonzo Dog Band reference I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Greg from Bloomfield:

Never, ever put the word "cutie" in your name. Ever.
Avatar 10:59am OTB:

"Death Cab for Cutie" was also a song performed by the house band in a strip club in a scene in "O Lucky Man" early in the film.
  10:59am Dean:

Fat & Fucked Up was the name of a string quartet in LA during the early punk years. I also dislike DCfC. And there's a new pop band with a dumb name the kids listen to these days. Can't remember it, though. SOMETHING the People.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am melinda:

Thanks Priceless. Mystery solved. Still hate it. Doesn't stand on its own if you don't know the reference. Is that the name of the song, or is it different?
Avatar 10:59am OTB:

...if I recall correctly, which I often don't....
Avatar 10:59am bobdoesthings:

@melinda - i think it's referencing a song.. www.youtube.com...

I was once in a band called Arbor Day. And Sweet Puddin'heads.
Avatar 11:01am V Priceless:

yeah, name of the tune, as bobdoes just posted. Love the Bonzos.

I got no hate for Ben or Death Cab! I like a bunch of their songs. But THAT NAME, Joe!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Nate K:

I have nothing against DCFC, not my bag, but the guy write and sing a song, no doubt.
Avatar 11:03am Claw!:

Yes, Joe, I appreciate that - but THE NAME!
  11:03am John Arthur:

I had some terrible band names: The Gathering Crowd (14 years old), The Morphine Lollipops (18 years old, not sure if I hate this or love this, still)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah, Bonzos do 'D Cab...' in Beatles' 'Magical Mystery Tour' film as a band in a strip club; parody/pastiche of such a song...
Avatar 11:04am V Priceless:

saw a band in NJ once called 'Scrod Rocket' - name stayed with me
  11:05am Dean:

@John Arthur: Morphine Lollipops works for me. Has a shoegaze/pop feel to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Greg from Bloomfield:

My band names, in order: Dagobah Playset, The Manny Trillo, The Groundlings, The Twtichgrass (UGH), Quit The Breathin', Lungs Of A Giant, Panglossian Prophets of Doom.

"Flying Burrito Brothers" still makes me gnash my teeth a little when I hear/see the name.

I always liked the idea of calling a band Brown Noise. We would play at really low frequencies and make the audience involuntarily poop themselves.
Avatar 11:11am Brian in UK:

TrouserCoughs does it for me.
  11:11am Dean:

I always wanted to run a bar/lounge, The Brown Candle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am adrian in mpls:

'TrouserCoughs' hahahaha
Avatar 11:12am d¢ pät:

I was in a band called Rock Pants...sort of. The dumb bass player didn't like it so we never got to use it. It came from his girlfriend who put on pants when she was a kid and realized there were rocks in them.
Avatar 11:13am Claw!:

There's a local band around here called Free Lobster Buffet - I can't imagine how many people have showed up to whatever venue they were playing only to be terribly disappointed. It's a brilliant way to get people to show up to your gigs, though! Big ups to them.
Avatar 11:13am Polyus:

@Brian UK, I want to bankroll that band.
Avatar 11:13am Claw!:

Yes, Adrian. Yes you can.
  11:14am Brendan:

Love the Osborne Bros Joe thx
  11:14am Dean:

Fiscal Cliff kind of gives away the era during which the band played. Arbor Day had a song about Nelson Rockefeller, when he was VP.

Free Lobster Buffet! A guy I knew back in the day wanted to name his band Twelve Kegs. The flyers would read, "Party with Twelve Kegs!"
Avatar 11:14am Claw!:

Play some naughty bluegrass for us, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Greg from Bloomfield:

@Dean: Kinda like The Free Beer & Hot Wings Show
