Options April 28, 2015: Shulcoth! Celebrating the life of Citizen Kafka and a few other important passings.

The Wretched Refuse String Band with Citizen Kafka

As the debris from another year is cast aside, it signals the time for Shulcoth! --the mythic celebration of Citizen Kafka's life. Richie "Shulky" Shulberg passed in 2009 but lives afloat radio waves and MySpace rebroadcasts. The dearly departed one was responsible for some rather questionable but entertaining comedy on WBAI, was a fiddler in the equally questionable but entertaining Wretched Refuse String Band and a vast collector of obscure pieces of what one of the faithful calls "Shulbergalia." The usual cast of co-conspirators helps pay tribute to Citizen Kafka on Irene's show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm fleep:

If I detect impending frank or frank-adjacent language, I will simply submerge until you radicals finish spewing your franky frankness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Early "Dead Air Chicken-aires"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Our dead air is better than their air!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Matt from Springfield:

@fleep: You could get some fresh (dead) air on the sidewalk, stop and buy a frank from a stand. Those franks speak my language!

Frank Language. Nice fake name.

"Dragnet" clock :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Matt from Springfield:

I think I've heard "Take Me Back to Tulsa" before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Irene Trudel:

It was a real thing! The Dragnet Clock existed sometime in the early 1990s. Former WFMU engineer Brian Redman had a hand in that. It was somewhat before the internet was readily available and you had to dial it up on a phone.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm redkayak:

  10:51pm JakeGould:

@Matt: The original Yiddish song went like this, “Monday: potatoes. Tuesday and Wednesday: potatoes. Thursday and Friday: potatoes. But on the Sabbath, something different: a lovely potato kugel!”
Avatar 10:52pm Mister Dobalina:

dood.. you are super COOL! I loove your show!
Avatar 10:52pm Mister Dobalina:

Right up my alley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: Did you hear the original song before you heard of the Fugs/Kafka version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Matt from Springfield:

This is a great audio/performance piece in its own right. UbuWeb quality!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm northguineahills:

There is an infinite amount of Citizen Kafka I'll never be ever to hear.
Avatar 10:56pm Mister Dobalina:

A classic to be archived.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey NGH!
Technically a finite amount -- but any amount of unheard Citizen Kafka is too much unheard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mr. D: It will be Archived in any case. Take it a step further, and Clicky-Star the episode at the top!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Matt from Springfield:

These guys are clever on SO many levels! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Matt from Springfield:

Clearly, Mike, but extra giggly that last part. LOVE their Community Calendars!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm northguineahills:

  11:27pm a complete asshole:

all this savant gaurd bullshit is growing like spiders....for love please play some god given rock and roll!. arrrrrgggghhh!
  11:28pm JakeGould:

Kids today don’t know from public radio community calendars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm Matt from Springfield:

"Old Dan Tucker"-ish
  11:29pm JakeGould:

@acompleteasshole: At least you are one with yourself and in touch with your core being.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey aca! You can always pass some time, by passing some gas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm Matt from Springfield:

WBAI apparently still has a real Community Calendar on @5 pm. Usually NPR still has stuff like that, sometimes PBS or local TV stations will, but it's a dying art.
  11:32pm The Shulkeit:

And we're here to make sure it stays that way.
  11:35pm JakeGould:

@Matt: In rural areas, the local public station’s community calendar is usually amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: Probably more thriving in those areas, indeed.
I could check out the Melungeon Folk Art Festival and Barn Dance this Saturday, May 2nd!
  11:38pm Acpah:

You have know idea what i know....but Mr. Gould you have class...I was just trying to coax Irene into playing some old fashioned rockand roll.... sorry anyone else who took me so seriously. CRAM it chumps.
  11:39pm Listener Robert:

Wow...AL721 reference! That was a mixture of fats that showed some promise vs. AIDS. Active Lipids at a 7:2:1 ratio, I forgot which.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, fascinating bit of history Listener Robert! Glad you could explain to us! :)
  11:40pm JakeGould:

@Matt: On Thursday, members of “Food not Jam Bands” will be collecting food. No jam bands playing. Friday, funky Fridays at Freddy’s where Jam Bands are our jam!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm Matt from Springfield:

...but no funk, please.
  11:42pm Apie:

So, for all intensive purposes, we'be been listening to the savant guard all night?
  11:43pm JakeGould:

On Sunday, Intensive Porpoises brings their eco-conscious bluegrass to the “Let’s Spoon” cafe at 1:00pm.
  11:45pm The Shulkeit:

Nope—that's all-in pensive tortoises.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Matt from Springfield:

Or even Cheesequake's collection of cheesecloths with cheesecake for the earthquake victims...? ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Matt from Springfield:

Tonight, we Savant-Guard, hard!
  11:47pm JakeGould:

On Monday, Pensive Tortoises brings their unique brand of reptile therapy to the campus garden. Join them as they attempt to coax tortoises out of their shells with their unique blend of Reiki and incense blowing.
  11:53pm JakeGould:

@Irene: So are there complete Citizen Kafka archives anywhere? There are some “Secret Museum of the Air” archives here on WFMU, but might be somewhere else? www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Irene Trudel:

Not at the moment. Ed Haber is archiving the tapes but hasn't found a place to post 'em. One of these days maybe...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm northguineahills:

3 more minutes Jake, keep 'em coming.
  11:58pm JakeGould:

Thanks for the info, Irene!
  11:59pm JakeGould:

@northguineahills: You mean community calendar? Those are all the index cards Trey in the office gave me, so that’s all I can do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Matt from Springfield:

ALL RIGHT! Another successful Rich Shulberg tribute!

Happy Shulcoth Irene, thanks for playing this show! Thanks (3) Frank Languages!

  1:28pm colette:

Hey, can you tell me where the "Rules for laws of the observation of Shulcoth for husband and wife" comes from? I need to send this to a friend, pronto!
Swag For Life Member 6:53am jeremyo:

ah, the marvelous annual Citizen Kafka show! Thank you. My children and I regularly improvise versions of Nothing at each other - it works nicely as a nihilistic lullaby, I find, or a vehicle for insults, so it's very popular in our house. But there ain't nothing like hearing the Wretched Refuse String Band do it!
Wonderful show, and I'm happy to know the rules of Shulcoth too. Doing it wrong all these years....
