The first Thunk Tank and Glen Jones were the first WFMU shows I heard. I AltaVista-ed WFMU after I read about it in the New York Times. So I owe it all to the Times.

1992 was the year I moved to my own place in Park Slope so I could properly pick up WFMU. Prior to that I lived in Brighton Beach and could only sporadically pick it up. Did have clear access to Kingsborough Community College radio which I barely remember listening to. And WBAI was sane and solvent back then.
Avatar 3:32pm d¢ pät:

Avatar 3:33pm JakeGould:

In 1992 it always seemed weird to me that Upsala College would have a station like WFMU. But hey, I never heard of Upsala College before WFMU so what do I know?
3:33pm Phillip in Brooklyn (48 years old):

Tony Coulter and Pat Duncan on Thursdays with live in studio bands
  3:33pm Dean:

Skimming a compilation of LCD work published in 2008 via Amazon "Look Inside," I see Ellery Eskelin and Nick Tosches wrote for it.
  3:33pm P-90:

@Cecile: I listened in the 80's too, at that time FMU was aert of a trio of college stations, along with WKCR and WFUV, that were almost the only alternatives to commercial programming (the less said about WBAI, the better.) But the station didn't yet have its 'identity" as we know it today, that came in the early 90's, as noted by others above.
  3:34pm Ken Weaver:

MY TWO FAVORITE DJs. ON TOGETHER!!! Hope you got my pledge, love ya' Guys!
  3:35pm Bronwyn C.:

If I hadn't already pledged, I would pledge just for Wlm. Berger saying "Das Widget"!
Avatar 3:36pm JakeGould:

FWIW, WBAI back in the 1980s/early-1990s was tolerable for a few shows. But only a few. A few. A small number.
  3:36pm GGG:

don't forget WNYU as a premier college radio alternative in NYC area, especially during those 90s years.
  3:36pm Walt:

The black with rainbow color sticker resembles the Brunswick label frim the 1950s-1960s. Brunswick was a Decca subsidiary, though.
3:36pm Phillip in Brooklyn (48 years old):

I remember so far back in WFMU that they use to cover the Uppsala college basketball team on their airwaves
  3:36pm joe:

Many's the time I've been the only one in the theater laughing at a point in a movie or play. Once I had people in the row in front of me turn & glare at me.
3:39pm Phillip in Brooklyn (48 years old):

@jakegould I use to listen to WBAI as well. And they did have some shows worth listening to like sounds of the city with Dennis Coleman and carrier wave with Sydney Smith

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Caryn:

@mushroomjesus: well, that whole movie is such ridiculous trash that laughter is the only sensible response.
Avatar 3:42pm JakeGould:

I actually still like some WBAI shows and the hosts seem nice. But I stopped listening to them a few years back after realizing I should have stopped listening to them even further back. The toxicity of WBAI makes the hosts just sound like they are constantly under siege. Not naming specific shows because I don’t even want to touch that.

3:45pm Phillip in Brooklyn (48 years old):

@jakegould in my misspent youth I listened to WBAI non stop in the 80's I know who your talking about. Those toxic hosts drove me away from WBAI in 88-89
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Caryn:

The "only some people laugh" thing at movies reminds me of how John Waters said he could look at an audience watching one of his early movies and tell at certain points who in the audience were gay and who were not, because all the gay people would laugh at a specific line and the others wouldn't. I've seen that idea in action only once at a screening of You Can't Stop The Music during Gay Pride Week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Andrew Waterloo:

Thanks to noise cancelling headphones I forgot I was in a room full of people when I burst out laughing at eraserhead dialogue.
3:46pm Phillip in Brooklyn (48 years old):

WNYU was the place for INDIE
WSOU was the home of metal or hair bands is what they call it today
Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Ralphine:

I only clicked on a link to listen to a Thunk Tank sample because the name of the show struck me funny, and the link to a sample of Jones and Burns said they were a couple of Jersey fat boys.

Avatar 4:40pm coelacanth:

why would someone bother? looking at a photo of a painting is not the same. i think it's analogous to people having enormous song collections in their "devices"- just so they can say they have it. (most people.)
Avatar 4:41pm northguineahills:

@Caryn: I haven't had a job that actually paid into a pension for the last 5 years (everyone just subcontracts freelancers anymore). I just liquidated my last retirement fund to help pay for a lawyer for our immigration interviews (and, living expenses, since I'm barely working now). That said, my former job from 15 months ago, asked me to interview in two weeks to work on the same project that was defunded. The positive, they offered me more $.

Odd coincidence. I did my BA thesis project on predicting lake flooding and drought conditions due to increases in suburbanation on a Lake Brooklyn in Clay County, FL. Two years later, I moved here.

My parents and wife get mad at me for never taking pictures. It's sort of a problem for this immigration interview we have, but my attitude is, if you have a photographic memory, why take pics? Plus, I like the subjectivity my memory colors said pictures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Caryn:

@ngh: fortunately, whenever I get brief freelance work, I can pay into my pensions. Except when the job is really small. Which is a lot of the time. So my pension statement has a nice list of jobs I don't get a pension for because I was too young, and jobs that I don't get a pension for because the pay was so small. My actual accrued pension is about 25 bucks a month right now! What with those lists, the pension statement is just a slap in the face.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Caryn:

I've once asked a relative to take a pic of one particular painting that I loved at a modern art museum in the Netherlands. But I think there's a difference between taking pics of a limited number of works that you really like, and just pointing and clicking your way through a gallery without actually looking at anything.

I take pictures of sculptures in museums sometimes since they are 3-dimensional and the context in which they are displayed can make a difference. But I don't get taking pictures of paintings. Surely you can just find a picture online of any famous painting that you would find in a major museum?
Avatar 4:54pm Jherweg:

I almost died from sleep deprivation after staying up all night with with Berger and then going straight to work for 15 hours....I am dying for WFMU......and i LIKE IT!!
Avatar 4:54pm northguineahills:

@Caryn: That sounds good! I'm looking into doing just that if everything works out. The working from out of town looked less attractive due to these immigration interviews. Everything was smooth sailing until 3 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Caryn:

I'm a relatively recent WFMU convert. Was first introduced to the station during the Marathon in 2000 or 2001. Patton Oswalt was encouraging people to pledge, so I tuned in, liked what I heard, pledged, and that was it.
Avatar 4:55pm coelacanth:

i don't recall which names were first for me,but Mr.Berger goes back at least almost as far as i do...he did not do a metal show.
Avatar 4:55pm V Priceless:

@ Polyus: sometimes a piece of art moves me to the point of wanting to move it out the back door, and directly to a wall at my place! : )
Avatar 4:55pm JakeGould:

Regarding taking pictures at museums and galleries, I went to a few art fairs in NYC recently. Those things are so crowed sometimes the only way you can ever “make note” of a picture is to take a pic. I’d say for every 10 works I take pics of, 1 or 2 of them I will stop to take it in. The rest are mildly interesting and it’s better to make some note of the work than wonder years later, “What was that one thing?”
Avatar 4:56pm JakeGould:

Also, most museums ban photos due to rights restrictions. So many times you see people taking quick shots to elude security guards. Very common practice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Uncle Michael:

I have photographed art in museums that's not famous enough to find online..and the exhibit card, for reference. Anything else is a concern for proving you've been there yourself. I hate crowded museums altogether, with or without cameras. Shuffling past art like a cafeteria line...I hate it so much. I only go to small exhibits on weekdays. No more blockbusters for me...ever. With cameras is generally worse. People jockeying for position. Ugh.

The first show I remember hearing on WFMU in 1994 was a DJ who has long since left the airwaves. I want to say he went by Jim C. He played mainly instrumentals on his show. Other gateway DJs were Dave Mandl, Bryce and Donna. And of course eventually I discovered Fabio.

Avatar 4:59pm Jherweg:

Avatar 4:59pm JakeGould:

Honestly I like films, but I remember seeing “George Washington” when it was David Gordon Green’s big deal. Rented it and the lady at the video store gushed, “Wasn’t it great!” And I said… “Not really… It kinda wasn’t…”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Caryn:

@UncleMichael: exactly. The one pic I've had taken was from an artist I'd never heard of, and a painting most people seemed to ignore.

Photos I can live with, but the people who insist on using a flash even though there is a HUGE sign right above the painting saying "No flash photography" and a guard telling them not to use a flash because the old painting can be damaged by exposure to the flash. Take a pic if you will, but if it says "no flash" then no flash, forchrissakes!
Avatar 5:01pm Polyus:

Plus if you take pictures of the art, the museum can't sell you a $65 souvenir book at the gift shop.
Avatar 5:01pm JakeGould:

“Plus if you take pictures of the art, the museum can't sell you a $65 souvenir book at the gift shop.” That has far more to do with it than “damage” caused by flashes. I assure you as someone who has worked with conservators about this…
Avatar 5:03pm Polyus:

@Jake - sorry, bad joke. My gf is a guard, so I know the story as well.
Avatar 5:03pm JakeGould:

Art gets slowly damaged more by humidity changes and the dust/lint of humans walking by than a flash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Uncle Michael:

In truth, the flash does no harm. That's pretty much a crock. The problem is the flash is intrusive on other people's experience.

Jake slipped in with a similar point.
Avatar 5:04pm JakeGould:

Also, 99% of people who have cameras with flashes have 100% no idea how or when to use one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Caryn:

@JakeGould: true, but when there's enough light to take a pic without a flash, and they're fine with you taking a pic as long as you don't use a flash, then I just don't see the point in using the flash just for the heck of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Uncle Michael:

So true.

Avatar 5:05pm coelacanth:

Tony, i remember a Jim -but it may've been Jim Price. he goes back a way.
Avatar 5:05pm JakeGould:

Also, the biggest threat to art conservation comes from the artists themselves. Someone go back in time and tell Picasso to stop using housepaint. Or tell Francis Bacon to not use the untreated backs of the canvases…

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Caryn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Caryn:

@P-90: true. Absolute sincerity baffles a lot of people, just because people are so cynical that they can't comprehend that someone might be totally sincere about something. A large swathe of movies seems to be based on this premise.

Midnight Dragon was my college beer!
Avatar 5:54pm JakeGould:

The backstory is pretty funny, “Of course, one cannot discuss sex and malt liquor without a bow to Don Vultaggio and John Ferolito. These two young men from Brooklyn came up the hard way. After high school, they scraped together $200 and bought a VW bus to deliver beer to places avoided by timid truckers, stores in neighborhoods like Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant. By 1982, the pair had 25 trucks and a decade of experience delivering refreshment in these less than pastoral settings. Vultaggio and Ferolito learned what their customers wanted because they were on the street with them every day.

One day they asked themselves why they were delivering other people’s beer when they could contract to brew their own and profit as both wholesalers and brewers. In 1986, they formed the Hornell Brewing Company and introduced Midnight Dragon Special Reserve Malt Liquor.

What they lacked in marketing power, they made up for in audacity. Their first poster featured a woman sipping Midnight Dragon through a straw. The caption read, “I could SUCK on this all night.”

You didn’t need a gypsy to read those tea leaves. When women’s groups protested, Ferolito told the Wall Street Journal, “Real men like sex and sex sells beer.” In fact, 22 separate groups protested the poster. Propelled by its notoriety, Midnight Dragon sold like hotcakes with malt syrup. As a cultured touch, its cans and bottles were emblazoned with an elegant crest and Latin inscription, “Epulis Accumbere Divum” (line 79 from the first book of Vergil’s Aeneid, “To recline at the feast of the gods”). For those eager to recline, Vultaggio and Ferolito delivered their new brew by the truckload — three million cases of Midnight Dragon annually.”
