Avatar 9:10am Sem Chumbo:

More Horse Lords? Wow, that's great. You and Scott must be conspiring. Hiya, Joe, and Noise-ists.
Avatar 9:12am Joe McG:

@Sem: I saw that Scott played 'em, so I thought I'd better hit a different track. An equally good one, I think!
Avatar 9:15am Joe McG:

Hey Andy! To keep in the Scott McDowell mood, here's one recorded for his show a month ago.

Is it African Express, or Africa Express? Spotify says Africa.
Avatar 9:39am Joe McG:

You got me, Ralphine. Still waking up.

love that show, cecile, but can't watch the last season yet. was the last show aired already?
Avatar 9:59am bobdoesthings:

good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Hugh:

Cardova is a Meters cover (not Booker T.) Excellent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Uncle Michael:

Now I must know if Cardova predates Ripple - I Don't Know What It Is , But Is Sure Is Funky.
Avatar 10:02am Cecile:

Yes, common. It was on Tuesday. I cried the first time I watched it, and then the next day when I watched it again. It was not the first time I cried this season. This whole season is excellent but somewhat bittersweet.
Avatar 10:02am Joe McG:

@Hugh: Oh, no, the Booker T is the bed music. Sorry if I was unclear about that.
Avatar 10:02am Cecile:

The whole cast were on Seth Myers afterward. I'd try to bookmark that, and then watch it after you finally see Season 7. It's pretty hilarious.
Avatar 10:03am SmokinJ:

You need no explanation buddy..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Uncle Michael:

It does. The Meters was 4 years earlier. But it gets interesting because I once saw Cyril Neville with Galactic an Trombone Shorty and they opened with the Ripple track...which is based on the Meters track...written by Cyril's brother and two others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am common:

thanks cecile. i'll check it out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Hugh:

Ya gotcha. I misheard!
Avatar 10:07am Cecile:

but don't worry, it's not dark at all. Just wistful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Greg from Bloomfield:

Morning, gang!
Avatar 10:08am bobdoesthings:

John Lennon was such a douche.
  10:08am Claw!:

I like that show, Cecile, but I haven't watched past the first episode or two of this final season. No spoilers!
Avatar 10:09am Cecile:

I will not spoil anything.
  10:09am Claw!:

He totally was, Bob.
Avatar 10:10am Cecile:

yeah, but he had the good sense to marry Yoko. And his kids are nice. And he made some alright music.
Avatar 10:10am bobdoesthings:

@cecile - not his first kid.. which he totally neglected and told was a mistake.. but yeah.. yay lennon.. nahhh fuck that trend following douche bag.
  10:11am Claw!:

His kids' music kinda sucks, though.
Avatar 10:11am Sem Chumbo:

Avatar 10:13am Cecile:

I didn't say he was nice to Julian, but Julian turned out to be a nice guy.
I think his kids music could be amazing, and it would still suffer comparisons.
Avatar 10:13am Cecile:

I gotta get that Del Shannon album if I can find a reissue or something.
  10:14am SeanG:

Jump Around!
Avatar 10:15am Joe McG:

@Cecile: It's a bit spotty, don't knock yourself out finding it. This is a good one, though!
  10:15am Claw!:

I don't compare them to their father. Objectively, they aren't very talented. Of course, that's just my opinion.

I'm kinda "whatever" on the Beatles, honestly. I like em ok, but I don't fawn over them like most folks seem to.
Avatar 10:17am Cecile:

As I learn more about the eras before and after, I do see the Beatles place in history being bigger than I used to think. I like them more than I used to. But I never really liked Sgt Pepper's.
  10:18am Mark:

"Henry, what's wrong, you're so quiet." "I'm just listening."
Avatar 10:18am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Some friends of mine supported Sean Lennon's band The GOASTT last year, so I went along to see them. They rocked. It was cool. Encored with Syd Barrett's "Long Gone". And I had no particular attachment to his family lineage. A pleasant surprise. (I haven't tracked down their records or anything, but a great live experience.)
Avatar 10:18am Cecile:

oh, hey, I've seen that Del Shannon album around. Bet I can find it cheapish.
  10:18am Brendan:

As of midnight it was legal in DC .
  10:19am Mark:

Now maybe Congress can get something done, Brendan.
  10:20am Claw!:

See, I like Sgt Pepper's and Magical Mystery Tour the best, I think. Magical Mystery might me my favorite, if I had to choose. I like Revolver and Rubber Soul ok, too. But I think I like the druggy albums the most.
Avatar 10:20am Mugsy:

Marijuana was found to be the least deadly of all the substances examined, a shocking 114 times less deadly than alcohol.
Avatar 10:20am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Definitely! I paid 99 cents. God Rest His Soul.
Avatar 10:21am Cecile:

Oh, Dana Stevens at Slate, you have no heart. The only bad review I've read of the P&R finale.
  10:21am Claw!:

Just thinking that, Brendan! Woooo!
I think the Repubes are trying to have the mayor arrested if she doesn't enforce the federal weed laws, though. :-/
Avatar 10:21am bobdoesthings:

@mugsy - tell us something we don't know
Avatar 10:21am Cecile:

I know, it is a tragedy.
Avatar 10:22am Mugsy:

I fell asleep during my root canal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Andrew Waterloo:

Back in the day when marijuana was a danger hallucinogen and smoking cigarettes helped a woman produce smaller easier to carry babies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am common:

@claw! with you on the beatles records.
Avatar 10:24am Cecile:

I like the less druggy albums better - Revolver, Rubber Soul, White Album, Abbey Road.
Avatar 10:25am βrian:

Late to surface. Sleep is good.
Avatar 10:25am Cecile:

In fact, it took me years to like anything even vaguely Sgt Pepper=ish. I had to work it all out of my system. There are some great songs on that album, but the whole thing is too much for me.
Avatar 10:26am Polyus:

Just finished a book dealing with the Vietnam War on the train this morning, what timing.
  10:27am Mark:

Not to nitpick, but "Revolver" might be the druggiest of all. John's songs ("She Said She Said" and "Tomorrow Never Knows") are drenched in acid. Many people think "Revolver" is their best album, coincidentally or not.
  10:27am Brendan:

Happy Tet all.
Avatar 10:28am Cecile:

Let's put it differently. On Revolver, the druggieness expresses itself in creative songwriting. In Sgt Pepper, lumpy self indulgence. Just saying. YMMV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Greg from Bloomfield:

Is it Tet already? Good heavens.
Avatar 10:29am V Priceless:

It's taken me a lifetime to come to the realization that McCartney was truly the driving force behind The Beatles, too, with all due respect to JL, who indeed has become more and more douche-like as history melts away his public persona. But then again, I've always been more partial to The Kinks and The Who.
  10:30am Mark:

I know we were on the wrong side in Viet Nam and all that, but a lot of people lost their brothers and sons and friends during the Tet Offensive, so it's not really something I like to see people celebrating.
Avatar 10:33am bobdoesthings:

I like thinking how many "legends" would have never existed if they twitter had existed..
  10:33am Mark:

V I think John started losing interest around the time of Sgt. Pepper, wasn't really writing as many songs, and when he fell in love with Yoko he was out completely. Paul was the only one interested in keeping it going. And as much as he gets bad-rapped as a lightweight, his best songs--"Hey Jude," "Let It Be," "Yesterday"--are as good as anything John ever wrote. And I love John, so I'm not putting him down. John was also the guy who really got the whole thing started, and in the early days he was the undisputed leader, I think even Paul would tell you that.
  10:34am Claw!:

I hear ya, Cecile. I used to feel that way, too. Meh. Not sure what changed.
Let's just say that I typically don't consciously choose to play The Beatles. There are enough people that play them already, so I just roll with it.
Joe definitely gave me an appreciation for Eleanor Rigby, though. ;) Although it seems I like that song much more when it's played by artists who *aren't* The Beatles. Who knew??
  10:34am John Yuma:

Traveling via Amtrak to NYC. Digging my fave station. Thanks for being there.
  10:35am Mark:

For me, that's the test of a great song--how many people can perform it in how many different ways. The Beatles wrote a lot of them.
  10:35am Mark:

All this because Joe played a track from "Mind Games" about a half an hour ago...
Avatar 10:37am Joe McG:

You bet, John Yuma! Have a great trip!

I never knew Wayne did this song. If you haven't heard his interview with Mark Maron (it's about a year old now), it's worth listening to the podcast (if you're as big of an MC5 freak as I am, anyway).
  10:55am Robert:

It always sounds to me like, "The harder they fall, the harder they fall...." Well, duh! I also hear "The world is white, the world is white...," no "black" in it, & keep thinking it's about snow.
  10:56am Mark:

This Lonnie Mack is funky as hell--wonder who the piano player is.
  10:58am Brendan:

He's gotta go, she's gotta go. Hope theres more than one bathroom.
Avatar 10:58am Polyus:

I haven't heard the Maron bit, but Wayne is one of the better rock interviews for my money. Always really well-spoken, honest about the past, and pretty spot-on about the presence. Other than his praise for Kid Rock, of course.
Avatar 10:59am Polyus:

'present', rather.
