Morning Joe and friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am DCE:

not a great morning so far--both wipers broke off my car! cheer me up Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am common:

sorry bout your wipers, dce. this is putting me in a mystic mood.
Avatar 9:06am Marcel M:

@DCE: Oh man, from the cold?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am listener james from westwood:

Morning, Joe and all!! Mellllllllow mood today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am DCE:

yeah they were frozen to the window, and I tried getting them unfrozen, but that resulted in SNAP. Guess I'll keep a squeegee handy!
Avatar 9:09am Marcel M:

Damn, that sucks DCE sorry. I guess thats why I see people put them up when its supposed to snow/ice over..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am listener james from westwood:

Lousy break on the wipers, DCE. Nasty season for cars and their owners both!
Avatar 9:12am Joe McG:

Wow, DCE, sorry to hear about your wipers wiping out. Maybe this music will make you think of summer....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am adrian in mpls:

DCE -- that's really crappy. i've always been afraid of doing that with my car
Avatar 9:13am Marcel M:

My van has been stuck in the snow for a week now. Just leaving it till it all melts. No alternate siding. Screw it! Don't need it not shoveling!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am sphere:

hello all
Avatar 9:18am Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Joe and those in the know. Or snow. Or, like many of us I guess, both.
Avatar 9:18am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe.
Little bit of George 'You should see what I can see when I'm cleaning windows' Formby in the last section.
Avatar 9:18am Kabotron:

good luck to all of you with all those snowstorms! a warm hello from Italy
Avatar 9:19am Joe McG:

What's the weather like in Italy, Kabotron?
Avatar 9:20am Kabotron:

snowing as well but very lightly and already close to melt. keeping warm inside with your nice tunes :)
  9:21am Kevlicki:

I'm currently down in Guatemala, not much snow to worry about on Lake Atitlan!
Avatar 9:23am Joe McG:

@Kabo and Kevlicki: Nice!

oh no...oh no!
Avatar 9:26am Polyus:

Oh geez, don't remember the last time I heard this one.
Avatar 9:26am Brian in UK:

@Sem is this an average Winter? What are the Summer temps?
Avatar 9:26am PKNY:

G'TZAG Joe and urbody! Nice to get a reminder that, at one point a long time ago, Aerosmith were a good band.
Avatar 9:27am Sem Chumbo:

Finger snappin' goodness.
Avatar 9:27am Brian in UK:

Would walking on the sand make more sense.
Avatar 9:28am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Hey Joe, i checked out last week's show on the archive - that Barbara Moore Singers track is exactly the kind of shit that gave us elves a bad name!! But all is forgiven, these tortured Steve Tyler vocals are amusing me no end...
Avatar 9:29am Joe McG:

@CWE: Well, it takes all kinds of elves to make a woodland.
Avatar 9:29am Kurt Gottschalk:

could you play that aerosmith song again? i missed the first half.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Goyim in the AM:

Austria is about 30 Fahrenheit, old snow from a week or so still hanging around but I am at a fairly high elevation.
Avatar 9:31am Brian in UK:

@tCw-e Can elves swim?
Avatar 9:31am Sem Chumbo:

@BiUK: no, no typical. Summer here~23C. The jet stream has shifted some and the warm moist air from the Gulf Stream (palm tress in Land's End) is now colliding right over us with Continental cold air. Result: not rain, but plenty of snow. This year.
Avatar 9:31am Brian in UK:

@Goyim Are you in Vienna?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am common:

just pictured the one beer garden i went to during my very brief moment in vienna, brian. good image. that was one huge beer i had.
Avatar 9:34am Brian in UK:

@common coffee in Vienna is bigger than in the US. Discuss?
  9:34am Claw!:

Good morning, Everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Ken From Hyde Park:

Haven't visited Vienna, but I do like their sausages.
Avatar 9:36am bobdoesthings:

good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am common:

@brian: i guess things are bigger in vienna? glad the beer was big!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Stevel:

Kabotron: Where in Italy? I have family around Ivrea, where snow is possible.
Avatar 9:36am Brian in UK:

Most European countries know how to make a good sausage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Goyim in the AM:

Brian: I am in the Jersey City to Vienna's Manhattan. Coffee is very, very big here. I call US fancy-pants coffee "bean tea".
Avatar 9:39am Brian in UK:

@Goyim I was fancying a short trip to Vienna this year from London by train. More fun than 'planes. When is a good time to go?
Avatar 9:39am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@BrianUK This one can't! I have the BMI of a typical Eritrean, apparently, and just sink, basically...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Goyim in the AM:

@Brian: Skip August (everyone's on vacation) and you can't really go wrong. I am partial to the early Autumn, myself.
Avatar 9:41am Brian in UK:

@common did you do a tour around Europe?

Thanks Goyim.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am MD:

Yo Joe...what's ya know???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am common:

@brian: no, i wish. i went to greece. we had a couple hours in vienna. pretty much all we did was drink beer. twas nice!
Avatar 9:44am Brian in UK:

Well you need an anaesthetic for the flight.
Avatar 9:44am Joe McG:

@MD: Slightly more than yesterday, I hope!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Ken From Hyde Park:

"Wait another week or two before you tell me we are through." That strikes me as a great lyric.

Avatar 9:57am Sem Chumbo:

Yah, Ratty. Re-count!
Avatar 9:58am bobdoesthings:

@ken from hp - was that the dead squirrel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am nickybones:

kinda sounds like DJ Keili's backing music.
Avatar 10:00am Marcel M:

I'm disturbed by the half naked Estonian laying behind Muuro looking at the camera lasciviously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Planet Tyler:

Apologies if this conversation has gone done already, but for days, at least for me, the playlists have been way ahead (~2/3 songs worth) of the stream. Or the stream has been way behind the playlist, your pick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Ken From Hyde Park:

At least Ratty garnered the mascot honor of Bill Mac's show - www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 10:02am bobdoesthings:

@planet ty - probably your stream is behind. I find the length of time varies greatly. Also some DJs aren't 100% on point with time.. It's part of the playlist charm in my opinion..
Avatar 10:02am βrian:

Frosty greetings from the isthmus (-7°F).
Avatar 10:04am the Canterbury wood-elf:

i fully concur re: Dusty's version, Joe. It's the definitive one. And to understand who "they" are, you'll have to read Heidegger...
Avatar 10:04am Marcel M:

Ahhhh the They Self.... reminds me of my school boy days...
Avatar 10:06am βrian:

Not the Gopher. She lives in Minnesota.
Avatar 10:06am Roberto:

Avatar 10:10am Joe McG:

@common: Yeah, they got me through the late 90s/early 2000s. I think this is their worst one yet.
  10:11am Stuart Murdoch:

Why don't you care anymore?
Avatar 10:11am βrian:

These days, we're wishing the isthmus were in MN where the state government isn't in the thrall of sociopaths.
Avatar 10:12am bobdoesthings:

@greg - pshhh whatevs
  10:12am SeanG:

Yes! love the go-betweens
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Ken From Hyde Park:

I bought some pre-packaged organic green beans the other day and had them last night. Some of the ends were turning brown and I trimmed them off first. I guess I'm in the clear from possible food poisoning, right? It's been like 15 hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am common:

@joe: have to agree
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am adrian in mpls:

@ βrian - yeah, all that re-writing of the purpose of the university system is some of the craziest, horrible, utilitarian logic ever.
Avatar 10:15am βrian:

And their target for surgical excision: "the search for truth".
  10:16am Will:

Any day goes better with some Go Betweens. I think that cut was originally on the LP Spring Hill Fair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am adrian in mpls:

truth doesn't make anyone any money!! that's the fucking logic of our times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Planet Tyler:

@bob - I agree with the charm bit, but that's not what's going on - the time lag has been very consistent and 3 days in a row. But I guess it's just me. Thanks :)
Avatar 10:18am Cecile:

Brian - MN was on the precipice of complete nutjobbery. We could be there in six months if we're not vigilant.

Will: yes, indeed it was.
  10:19am Mark in Toronto:

Greetings from the Great White North, temp about -13C, about -9F
Avatar 10:19am Marcel M:

@Planet Tyler: Have you tried with the 128k mp3? Or are you doing popup? Also, if you are listening on your phone is much more off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Goyim in the AM:

@Planet Ty -- I have had some weirdness in the last few days, but I thought it was related to the Streamium server (I use a Phillips Internet radio). Where are you and what are you listening with?
Avatar 10:19am Cecile:

it's -1 here, but much colder with the humidity and wind.
  10:20am Mark in Toronto:

sorry, thats +9F
  10:20am jeff-m:

nice to see Celsius and Fahrenheit are converging more and more at that temperature. It's like a destiny with "really fucking cold" out :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am adrian in mpls:

yeah - it's really cold today - i was taking pictures on the hennepin avenue bridge this morning - and my fingers were screaming at me for a long time afterwards
  10:21am jeff-m:

damn... tricked!

Invisible Days song is good though
Avatar 10:22am PKNY:

Hmmm, I'm listening to the 128k stream through iTunes on my Mac, no delays on my side.
Avatar 10:22am Cecile:

Mark, it's just what jeff m said. fucking cold out. Almost froze my feet today.
  10:22am Lance Armstrong:

Truth shmruth! Ha ha!
Avatar 10:23am Marcel M:

I find that the 128k mo3 stream works better than the pop up player.
  10:23am jeff-m:

agreed Lance. it's a nicer picture with Celc and Fahr holding hands with little hearts over their heads
Avatar 10:23am Cecile:

the app even works better than the pop-up at times, but this is what I gotta listen to at work.
Avatar 10:24am Cecile:

so when are the results of the Muuro remix contest going to be announced?
Avatar 10:25am Polyus:

Yes temps here in MN have been making me slightly crabby the last couple of days, even though I feel like I don't have the right to be. Not with all the snow you East Coasters are getting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Planet Tyler:

@Marcel, I'm streaming 32k thru Windows - and when I check the pop-up player, it's in a totally different place. Who knew time travel could be so easy?
Avatar 10:26am Cecile:

I have decided that Avalon is a terrible Roxy music album, but a great Bryan Ferry one.
Avatar 10:26am Cecile:

we had a ton of snow on Tuesday. That sucked.
Avatar 10:26am Marcel M:

Oh man Avalon...More than this still gets me though. Maybe its just because of Lost in Translation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Planet Tyler:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Mike East:

@VP - start with pork of some kind, add collards, simmer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Mike East:

guys, the FMU mascot kinda scares me.
Avatar 11:14am V Priceless:

@ Mike East - thanx - I suspected pork might be a key factor in the equation. Cool.
Avatar 11:14am Brian in UK:

Not sure what collards are but if they are like cabbage; garlic, rosemary & pancetta fried in olive oil; add torn up cabbage, later peas and vegetable stock. Cook for ten minutes or so. Add large knob of butter.
Avatar 11:15am βrian:

I prefer simple steaming for collards or a sauté that's been started with piles of minced ginger. Lime-tamari sauce with toasted sesame oil.
Avatar 11:15am bobdoesthings:

when you said Steve Gunn I thought of Tim Gunn from that Project Runway show.. was most confused for a second.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Mike East:

yeah, ham hocks will do it if you can find.

Pancetta is the pork element.

No idea how they prepared 'em, and it's best not to know. It was magical.
Avatar 11:17am Brian in UK:

Pancetta is smoked so it is for flavour.

Saw Steve with Mike Cooper hence the listener picture, Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Kelly Jones:

I'm up! Coffee is being input! Joe will ensure that the day starts with a smile! Aw shucks....
Avatar 11:18am Joe McG:

@Brian: It's a very nice picture! @Cheyenne: Synchronicity! @Kelly J: Awwww! Happy to keep you company!
Avatar 11:20am V Priceless:

thanks for the great ideas, gang! I had some crazy good collards at a tiny place on E. 12 Street in NYC called Ducks about a month ago - and I've been on a bender ever since!
Avatar 11:21am bobdoesthings:

damn.. this is a fantastic beefheart track, never heard this before! awesome!
  11:21am P-90:

actually, Tim Gunn from Project Runway SHOULD have a Bluegrass band
Avatar 11:21am Cecile:

collards you can do with smoked turkey. My Alabaman ex -worker always made them with at least one other green (can be even cabbage), and had you top them with a vinegar salad of cucumbers, onion and tomatoes to your taste.
Avatar 11:22am Cecile:

I gotta order this Bheart thing stat.
Avatar 11:22am Claw!:

Eat yer greens, V!
Avatar 11:22am βrian:

I often separate the main collard veins in order to chop them finely.
Avatar 11:24am bobdoesthings:

@brian - I like the main veins intact and cutting them into little flags down middle of vein.
Avatar 11:24am Brian in UK:

What's the difference twixt grits & polenta?
Avatar 11:24am V Priceless:

@ Brian - so you pretty much "de-leaf" from the stalk all the way up, and then chop up the stalks separately (discard stalks below the leaf)?
Avatar 11:25am Cecile:

grits are usually white corn, polenta is white.
  11:25am Steve:

Joe, Thanks for playing Capt. Beefheart ! How is this new CD 'Live 1966-67' vs. the material on the 'Grows Fins' collection that collected some of the same recordings ?
Avatar 11:26am Brian in UK:

I do the same with cabbage, run a knife down either side of the thick stem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Kelly Jones:

That Beefheart cut was redonk.
Avatar 11:26am Cecile:

I've had them cross-cut, bottom pieces have stem in them. It's good, but you have to slice them more finely.
Avatar 11:26am βrian:

Pretty much, though I don't discard much at all.

"Polenta" makes for better pillow talk.
Avatar 11:27am Joe McG:

@Steve: I think it's just more complete.
Avatar 11:27am V Priceless:

thanks all!
Avatar 11:27am Brian in UK:

Well if you were offered both which name appeals most?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Goyim in the AM:

Check it out, Steve: www.beefheart.com...
Avatar 11:28am βrian:

Flogging with collards makes for interesting pre-prandial foreplay.
Avatar 11:28am Cecile:

Brian, whichever one was made right. Both are great.
  11:29am Steve:

Wow! thanks a lot Goyim. That was very helpful the beefheart link. I really appreciate it.
Avatar 11:29am V Priceless:

Starting our own language here. So far we've got "Dolpinately Shatnerriffic"!
Avatar 11:29am βrian:

I would choose Marion Cotillard, whispering "polenta, mon amour."
Avatar 11:30am Claw!:

Yes. Dolphinitely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am chris:

Good morning, Good Folks of the Board.

Damn fine show you got here, Mr. McG. Cheers.
Avatar 11:30am Cecile:

Love this monkees song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am doctorjazz:

Cool version, Hi all, busy so far in the office but checking in. Was that really Captain Beefheart?
Avatar 11:31am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Bongwater's cover was also quite loverly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am nickybones:

Oh nice, he released this! I saw him do this a while back at Glasslands. Loved his version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Goyim in the AM:

You're welcome, Steve. That site was semi-authorized during Beefheart's lifetime, and well worth checking out.
Avatar 11:31am Brian in UK:

@βrian is that one leg or two. I would go for Audrey Tatou in a leg iron in The Longest Engagement. Beautiful.
Avatar 11:33am GeesyCreesy:

This "Station Break" song sounds like the impetus for the Doug theme song
Avatar 11:33am Brian in UK:

Better walk the dog before the sun goes to bed. Great show, Joe. You got the best listeners.
  11:34am dennis diken:

delightful show Joe, as per!
  11:34am martin:

that last tune sounded alot like mike nesmith
Avatar 11:34am Joe McG:

@Brian: Say hi to the Bow-Wow for me!
Avatar 11:35am MenfussMike:

yes thanks Goyim
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Carmichael:

OK, finished mitigating staff crises and ready to hear the last 30. Heya Joe and the usual suspects.
Avatar 11:36am Joe McG:

Thanks, Chris, Dennis!
Avatar 11:36am Cecile:

martin, it was a Mike Nesmith penned monkeees song.

this guy is good. I don't usually like moody folk, but this guy has an x-factor I dig.
  11:37am Steve:

Hey Dennis,
Do you guys still perform my fave Smithereens song 'Groovy Tuesday' in concert ?
Avatar 11:40am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Nice guitar strings.
Avatar 11:41am jeff-m:

this DBH is super nice
Avatar 11:44am Joe McG:

Hi, Jeff! Hope you're well!
  11:44am Mark in Toronto:

Cecile, it's Lee Renaldo of Sonic Youth fame
Avatar 11:45am jeff-m:

back at ya , sir :)
Avatar 11:45am Cecile:

I know it is. He's doing a cover of a Mike Nesmith Monkees song.
Avatar 11:45am Cecile:

Oh, sorry, Mark, I meant Janne Westlund I liked. Lee I already like.
Avatar 11:47am Cecile:

that last song sounded a bit like Hedningarna
Avatar 11:47am bobdoesthings:

Does anyone/Joe have or have listened to this "Rough Guide to Psychedelic India" before? would you recommend buying?
Avatar 11:48am Cecile:

I liked the Rough Guide to Gypsy Swing. A very wide variety of artists and styles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Mike Noble:

Those seem like they couldn't be more different.
Avatar 11:49am Cecile:

they tend to hit the right canon points, and throw in a few interesting obscurities.
Avatar 11:49am kirk from beer city usa:

he's singing from the point of view of the bike! I can't imagine too many other songs of this type.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Mike Noble:

I think there's also a Psychedelic Bollywood collection. I've been disappointed with some other Rough Guides (just a bit too rough).
Avatar 11:49am Polyus:

Feeling sorry for this poor bicycle.
Avatar 11:49am Cecile:

Avatar 11:49am bobdoesthings:

hmm sounds like its worth the coins
Avatar 11:50am Joe McG:

@bobdt: It's really nice, a lot of good stuff on it. Stuff you've heard like "Dum Maro Dum" but also other more obscure things.
Avatar 11:51am bobdoesthings:

Thanks Joe! for the info and for another great show!
Avatar 11:52am Joe McG:

My pleasure! Be kind to your bikes, everyone!
Avatar 11:52am V Priceless:

thanx for the soothing sonics, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Greg from Bloomfield:

@bob: Not sure it's exactly what you're in the market for, but I can vouch for Sitar Beat! Vol. 1.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Goyim in the AM:

Gonna go whisper to my bike that spring is coming. Sniff, sniff, something in my eye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Mike Noble:

for further reading on the relationship between men and their bikes, may I recommend Flann O'Brien (Brian O'Nolan)'s THE THIRD POLICEMAN.
Avatar 11:54am bobdoesthings:

@greg - thanks man I'll check it out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Carmichael:

it's gonna rain all weekend here in Drought World! Putting my bike in the garage.
Avatar 11:55am Cecile:

sounds like Drought World might be flood world soon.
Avatar 11:56am Claw!:

Joe! Nice work today, Sir. :) Enjoy the rest of your week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am chris:

@Carm, preparing for 10 inches over the next two days, w/ 50 mph winds... gonna be an interesting one! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Carmichael:

Where r u, chris?
Avatar 11:57am Polyus:

I was just thinking my bike looked so forlorn in the corner of the basement the other day. But it's probably equally happy not to be covered in salt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am chris:

Land of the anti-vaxxers... Marin co.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Carmichael:

He he Chris ... I'm in Sacramento.
Avatar 11:59am Sem Chumbo:

Great all the way around, Joe. Much appreciated. Later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Greg from Bloomfield:

Thanks, Joe! Happy Thursday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am sphere:

thanks, Joe! :)
