Options February 4, 2015: Poor But Sexy
Taking Agata Pyzik's brilliant book on neoliberalism, post-punk and the culture clashes between Eastern and Western Europe as our launching pad, we'll spin three hours of music from the Eastern end of the equation, including Albania, Bulgaria + the Czech Republic through Slovenia, Russia + Ukraine. Oh, and Poland. Don't forget Poland.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Uncle Michael:

We went on a day trip to Montanegro and went through one of the last secured border checkpoints in the former Yugoslav Republics. That was weird. We sailed right through but the picked through every Croatian's car with a fine toothed comb. And this checkpoint was going away in just a few months.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Gary:

Whoa, that is weird. When was this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Uncle Michael:

I'm thinking 2007,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Uncle Michael:

Maybe 2009.
Avatar 8:54pm glenn:

why the surprise? serbs and croats despise one another.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Uncle Michael:

This was Montanegrans and Croats.
  9:02pm Jill B.:

Time for dinner! Goodnight Gary, Uncle Michael, Glenn, Sharon M., and everyone else. Great program tonight, Gary. Catch you next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Gary:

Happy eatin's, Mom -- talk with you soon!
Avatar 9:03pm northguineahills:

Kurws, very close to the Polish word, kurwa, while although literally means whore, is used as a catch-all profanity (like shit of fuck in English)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gary:

Oh, yes -- actually I forgot that I had read that about the band, that they're called, literally, "Whor" (if I've remembered correctly)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm coelacanth:

i wonder if there's any relation of the polish surname,"Kurzawa" and that word, kurwa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm coelacanth:

(i know little about most other languages,so please forgive me if that's a stupid question.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Ike:

Hello! Cool sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Gary:

Iiiiike! Sorry to have missed you this weekend.
Avatar 9:17pm northguineahills:

My knowledge of Slavic languages is rather minuscule, although I've read on the Hapsburg and Prussian Empires edicts on issuing surnames. In the areas of Poland under either of these empires, you would be issued a surname by the local bureaucrat, unless you paid a bribe. If you wanted a really nice name, (ie: goldman (even if you already were a goldsmith)), it would cost more. So, it is possible, but I don't know enough about the etymology of Polish to fully answer your question.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Gary:

Whoa, I had no idea you could buy your way into a better name
Avatar 9:20pm northguineahills:

Well, at the time, unless you were aristocracy, you had no surname.
Avatar 9:25pm northguineahills:

Avatar 9:30pm glenn:

it's almost like buying your way into the aristocracy.
Avatar 9:36pm northguineahills:

I've been coming across a lot of Slovenian music that is curiously not Laibach lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Gary:

I almost played something from Anja's previous band, Videosex, but couldn't find anything good enough quality (sound quality)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm coelacanth:

...so it's possible that if those in control wanted to deal you a shitty hand they may insert an adjective like "filthy" or "un-fulfilling" into the word "whore",and name you that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Ike:

Re: "The Leszczer's": An error by the band, or can you "legally" make plurals w/apostrophes in Polish? I was shocked and appalled to find that Dutch allows apostrophic pluralization, which in English is only done in (hideous and gross) error.
Avatar 9:57pm northguineahills:

Thanks Gary, good fun stuff! Night!
Avatar 9:58pm northguineahills:

@coelacanth: It did happen, although usually the insult was more subtle, and usually only applied to minorities (in order to get a bribe).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Gary:

Night, NGH! Thanks for hanging & for all the 411!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm coelacanth:

Thank you Gary
have a good night,all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm coelacanth:

Thanks ngh...yeah- it had to have happened; probably a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Gary:
