Avatar 9:47am Roberto:

I wonder if my bassoonist friend is familiar with this tune. There probably aren't many bassoon-related disco songs.
Avatar 9:48am the Canterbury wood-elf:

You found the bassoon disco record!! Nice one, Joe.

Oh my gosh, what the fuck, Joe McGasko?!? Hahahaha

Avatar 9:58am V Priceless:

if I get down any further, I'll be behind myself!
Avatar 9:59am KP:

The cover of that Living Guitars/Stones album is hysterical
Avatar 9:59am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Brian Seemingly so! According to the Wikipedia entry on disco "The sound is enriched with solo lines and harmony parts played by a variety of orchestral instruments, such as harp, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, clarinet, flugelhorn, French horn, tuba, English horn..." No concrete examples, sadly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Greg from Bloomfield:

Morning, Joe & everybody! Still a little zonked out on NyQuil, so I'm gonna be behind the beat for a bit.
Avatar 10:02am Brian in UK:

Avatar 10:15am thee Canterbury wood-elf:

@Brian The list goes on and on, I just truncated after cor anglais. And there appears to be a whole blog dedicated to orchestral disco, but i'm not going down that rabbit hole today!
Avatar 10:16am KP:

Avatar 10:16am Brian in UK:

Very wise, my friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am common:

god i need a moog.
Avatar 10:17am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@VP Yes indeed, and it's a real reason for Gongfreaks to rejoice. Somehow it sounds totally 2014, but totally Gong at the same time. Really funny, poignant, thought-provoking and utterly cosmic. Definitely the best Gong LP since the Radio Gnome trilogy. Last time i checked, the whole thing was listenable on YouTube. Check it out.
Avatar 10:19am Brian in UK:

@the Canterbury wood-elf We went to see this the other day. It finishes next Tuesday though.

Avatar 10:53am bobdoesthings:

untill it all gets automated and the entire transportation industry is out of work..
Avatar 10:53am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Wow, that was one helluva soliloquy! Somehow songs about driving trucks (lorries, that is) around Britain just wouldn't cut it. There's only one I know about, by Fotheringay, and it's truly awful.

Big American Trucking

Avatar 10:55am βrian:

Truckers drive like crazed demons in these parts. I try to keep my distance.
Avatar 10:55am Cecile:

I'm not real excited about truckers now. They are wrecking the streets in our neighborhoods taking shortcuts they are not supposed to. And wrecking our bridges by playing fast and loose with the clearance.
Avatar 10:55am Cecile:

Well, those truckers. Not all truckers.
Avatar 10:56am Cecile:

this is a Duane Train fave. I love this song.

  10:58am frenchee:

Hi Joe!

that was some mothertrucker song! I like this Main Ingredient meandersoul song too.
I am singing along to THAT one.
Avatar 10:58am Cecile:

oy, neil.
Avatar 10:58am Claw!:

;) Ha! I'm surprised someone else didn't type it first, nickybones! Ya snooze, ya lose.
Avatar 10:58am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@JMcG It's called "Knights of the Road", on the second (unfinished, but then finished recently) Fotheringay LP. The Sandy Denny stuff on that album is typically sublime, but her husband Trevor's songs are weak faux-country.

BTW: What was that Zappa song about a trucker "bustin' his ass to drive a load of string beans to Utah"? Not really into FZ but that might be my favourite American trucker song.
  10:59am Piker!:

This set is making my day. Thank you!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am tikk:

I like that Donnelson hedges his romanticism with a dose of realism, by conceding that his driver has "a lot more goin' for him than most truck drivin' songs have ever given him credit for."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am nickybones:

Nothin' slower than me before noon. Nice work!
Avatar 11:01am Claw!:

Weird Al's "Truck Drivin' Song" is easily *the best* truckin' song.
Avatar 11:03am Cecile:

Is We Are The Road Crew a trucking song?
Avatar 11:04am Cecile:

yes, a lot of people do.

oh, neil. I wish I could even find pleasure in disliking your music. But no.
Avatar 11:05am Brian in UK:

@the Canterbury wood-elf I abide in Watford.
Avatar 11:05am Cecile:

the latter.
Avatar 11:06am Claw!:

@cecile - Hmm... I would say "no." It's more one of those "on the road touring again" songs. BUT - I wouldn't be surprised if truckers adopted it!
Avatar 11:06am Cecile:

oh! Eastbound and Down is the best truckin' song.
  11:07am jt:

Trucker's deliver goods. D.J.'s deliver moods.
Avatar 11:09am Claw!:

Now *that* there's a truckin' song! :)
I'm just partial to the Weird, seeing as how he's my spirit husband and all. But Al's song really is just SO spot-on and hilarious.
Avatar 11:10am Cecile:

I have to hear that - I haven't kept up with Al the way I used to.
Avatar 11:11am Cecile:

In my head, the roadies from We Are the Road Crew are always beating up the roadies from the Load Out. hahahahha

Dude, I linked it! Go listen to it. Seriously. You will laugh whilst tappin yer toes. :)
Avatar 11:11am Claw!:

hahaha... ROADIE FIGHT!
Avatar 11:12am V Priceless:

Avatar 11:12am Cecile:

it could be.
Avatar 11:13am Claw!:

Avatar 11:13am Cecile:

Avatar 11:13am Cecile:

friggin stoners.
Avatar 11:14am Claw!:

Avatar 11:14am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Didn't Neil Diamond mention getting stoned in that "Lordy" song. I quite like the image of Neil Diamond running into a tree.
Avatar 11:16am Claw!:

Sorry, didn't mean to yell - I'm just real passionate about Al. I would describe myself as an evangAList. I think he is woefully underrated as an artist.
