Listening to Skeets McDonald on the stream. Jeez, Skeets, how about consent?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55am Jeff Golick:

Morning, @listener james!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am listener james from westwood:

Jeff! I'm gonna use the blender so TALK LOUD when you come on mic. :D
Avatar 8:59am ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

I gotta go walk the dog. It's 12°F. Fuck!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Jeff Golick:

Whatcha blending, @ljfw?

Hi, @ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Jeff Golick:

Maybe wear the dog, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: Ice, protein powder, mixed berries, banana, and kale. The result is sort of mauve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Jeff Golick:

I'd like everyone to know that one of my headphone foam pads fell off, but I'm okay and will power through the pain. Cuz I'm a professional.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am listener james from westwood:

Just gonna fave this episode now, there we go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Jeff Golick:

Geez, @ljfw, that could sustain a North Korean family for weeks.
Avatar 9:12am duke:

Good chilly morning everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am listener james from westwood:

@Jeff, so could I! Thus the smoothies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am listener james from westwood:

@Doug, my sympathies, I've had my share of early-a.m. winter traipses w a dog who needed to take inventory of EVERY SPOT WHERE HE PEED IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD FML.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Jeff Golick:

@duke! Come warm yourself by the good vibes here...
Avatar 9:15am ndbob:

I prefer a cheese omlette for breakfast:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am listener james from westwood:

ndbob, that's absolutely in the rotation. Can't subsist all 7 days on the week on nutri-mulch.
Avatar 9:17am ndbob:

@James I do eat fruit tho - veggies on occassion
Avatar 9:18am ndbob:

Someone suggested to me in North Dakota that I get a dog - I couldn't see walking when when there are so many subzero days with ice covered sidewalks and streets
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

What is it said of God, and beetles? An inordinate fondness? That's me and my morning baked goods (scones, croissants, muffins).

Help me, Obi Wan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am listener james from westwood:

@ndbob: Veggies go nicely into an omelet filling. I'll saute peppers & shallots sometimes for mine.
@Jeff: I have superlative pastries and bagels within walking distance. If I don't mainline the vitamin sludge I'm at risk of being tempted out by one of those cartoon scent-hands from the Warner Bros. cartoons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am listener james from westwood:

A how how how.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Jeff Golick:

How now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Artie Haywire:

Home, home on the range...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am listener james from westwood:

That'll get the cow's attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Jeff Golick:

And how (how how), @listener james.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Jeff Golick:

@Artie's here! Bringing deer, buffalo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Artie Haywire:

My antelope are really frolicing this morning. I guess they /like/ the cold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- hey over here! Morgen's a fave. My type of stuff...Gif's a winner too...
Avatar 9:48am kat330:

@anyone/all: Happy 2015! And now for something completely different: Irrespective of FMU ending 2014 by reducing its ratio of women DJs (bad enough), what I've noticed is possibly (probably) a worse M/F atio is the number of female artists on playlists compared with men. Certainly nowhere close to 51% of the total.

Has an objective statistics study been done on WFMU's M/F ratios by anyone? Does the lack of female representation even bother anyone at the station or you commenters? Doubt if female DJs even get close to 51% here, there or anywhere. Can FMU pledge to at least make some inroads into this imbalance in 2015 and beyond? Would be a swell resolution.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Jeff Golick:

@Rev Rabbit: hey hey, say hey, kid!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am listener james from westwood:

I was sad to see fewer women on the schedule, for whatever reason they were absent, and it would indeed be interesting to line up the M/F artist ratio, esp. comparing women's playlists to men's. Considering DJs come up thru the ranks as volunteers, expanding awareness of that process so women who might want to DJ would be one way to at least address the DJ gender ratio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am listener james from westwood:

Julie, for instance, seemed to play a goodly share of women. But Diane Kamikaze's show is metal-oriented, a genre that seems to skew male.
Avatar 9:56am kat330:

@James: First, thanks for the courtesy of replying. Yeah, like I said, I doubt the female DJs improve on the M/F artist played ratio. Just so sad to listen to hour after hour where not a SINGLE woman artist is heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Jeff Golick:

HNY, @kat330! That's an incredibly fine point you raise. When similar studies have been done on, say, the NYT Book Review, the results are grim and startling.

While drawing up this particular playlist, I did note that I'd filled the hour with white dudes. (I actually tend to notice race more than gender.) It's for sure something I'll strive for -- more balance.
Avatar 9:57am ndbob:

excellent show Jeff!
Avatar 9:58am kat330:

And then when they are, they are either on staff or closely connected to staff. Any contemporary outsiders have to have the highest production values -- vocal / instrumental, etc. -- whereas the lower fi and grungier the male artists, the better. It's so puzzling and difficult to wrap my brain around.
Avatar 9:59am kat330:

Oh, hey, Bob! Thought of you when I saw this AP item in our paper: tinyurl.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Jeff Golick:

(It's a little harder to achieve sex/gender parity on D:O Radio. And fwiw, Jeff and I have found planning "ladies only!" sets to be less than satisfying, and perhaps a tad pandering?)
Avatar 10:00am kat330:

@Jeff: Thanks, I appreciate it! First requires listening to more female artists though. I don't know how much Brian Turner influences?
Avatar 10:00am βrian:

-7 ℉ plus a 20 mph wind on the isthmus today. If I had a dog, today's walk would be like Astro's. Safely indoors.
Avatar 10:01am ndbob:

@kat heya! reading that article now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Jeff, for the fine show! Stay warm, all!!
Avatar 10:01am duke:

Thanks Jeff

Wasn't it a front pager locally? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This schedule change was a big one - & many were a bit disgruntled by it. I don't accuse anyone of a bias against lady DJs, & I don't want to comment on the whole process of how Programs are chosen & let go; sufice to say that the Programs off the shcedule that had lady DJs couldn't have been let go on merit!
Avatar 10:02am kat330:

Yes, it's frigid for all -- keep warm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @duke, @ljfw, for being here.
And belated welcome, βrian!

And, @kat330, as far as music that's played, I can't speak for anyone else at FMU, but BT has zero influence for me and Jeff J.
  10:09am kat330:

@Jeff: Already signed out but I wanted to say NO, please, to "ladies-only" sets. YES, that is pandering and not at all what this female wants to hear. FREE FORM should encompass it all, and it includes a world that is 51% female.
