evening Gary and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Gary:

Welcome to the party, Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm northguineahills:

I won tickets to see Dizze Rascal from my friend's party raffle the first time he played in NYC. (Where he used a flatbed as a stage). To say the least, I totally spaced on the date and forgot to go.

Workdays all this week, but going to lunch w friends tomorrow. Midweek NYEs are tough amid freelancing. Work, then eat, then read & listen to the stream.

Discovered this crazy robotic sub-genre / collective, PC Music, via: digthattreasure.blogspot.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Gary:

Also, not sure it's obvious, but GFOTY = Girlfriend of the Year
Avatar 7:25pm steve:

"Palette" by Tielsie on PC Music was one of my fav tracks this year. very intriguing label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm listener james from westwood:

Didn't know GFOTY, but I am approximately as hip as a rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm listener james from westwood:

Oooooh, that sax bit behind NWA during the intro = the one used in "Bring the Noise"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Gary:

Sounds like it, yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm listener james from westwood:

Aaaaaand Dr. Google sez yes! They also share a bit o "Funky Drummer," the Henrietta Lacks cell of hip-hop.
Avatar 7:38pm glenn:

hey guys. i like to think of it as boring new year.
Avatar 7:39pm glenn:

or to quote jackie gleason - "new years eve is for amateurs".

Just finished Greg Milner's Perfecting Sound Forever: An Aural History of Recorded Music ... great section on Public Enemy near the end of the book
Avatar 7:40pm Holly in NC:

Happy New Year, Gary & all!

@ljfw - +1000000000000 for Henrietta Lacks reference :-)
  7:41pm Doug Schulkind:

That GFOTY sounded kinda Die Antwoordish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Gary:

I need to check out Die Antwoord ... I can't remember if I've DLed / listened to anything yet
Avatar 7:43pm Holly in NC:

Die Antwoord videos make me feel very unclean. Which I suppose is the intent.

Avatar 7:49pm Holly in NC:

NYC po-pos need to be fired, en masse, and Mayor needs to grow a pair.

In contrast, Nashville Police Chief is really quite amazing & very eloquent:
  7:50pm Doug Schulkind:

It confounds me that Die Antwoord hasn't received more air play on FMU. On the other hand, I dig them, but have never played a single track.

I guess that's what 2015 is for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Gary:

I saw that Nashville guy via FB, yeah. And yes, everyone who turned should just be ... turned out.
Avatar 7:50pm glenn:

while i'm pretty much pro union, i would throw the police union head dudes off the space shuttle in a heartbeat.
Avatar 7:52pm glenn:

space station, i should say.
Avatar 7:53pm steve:

Holly - that letter is so good i couldn't even believe it was real at first.
Avatar 7:54pm ndbob:

amazing and eloquent is right Holly - tho I think everyone here is overreacting to what admittedly were some seriously unprofessional NYPD actions
Avatar 7:55pm steve:

agreed re: DeBlasio, even Giuliani was on TV over the weekend saying the PBA spokeman a hole and the cops turning their backs on him crossed a line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Holly! Rebecca Skloot's book on the topic was a gem.
Avatar 7:56pm ndbob:

firing everyone who behaved terribly won't solve the problem
  7:57pm peter:

hey gary! i just today finished "sea of poppies" by amitav ghosh, which i loved, so that's my recommendation!
Avatar 7:59pm ndbob:

I need to go
excellent hour Gary - happy New Year everyone!
Avatar 8:00pm Holly in NC:

@steve - Yes. Glad you share my reaction.
@ndbob - I very respectfully disagree re overreaction, I am seriously worried that NYPD is well on the way to forming its own army. But I should've been more clear, I think the Union head(s) s/b fired immediately, all others s/b retrained & get a second chance before firing.

@ljfw - Ms. Skloot's book is one of the best, maybe the best, "pop sci" non-fiction books I've ever read. I've read it 3 times! Hate agreeing w. Oprah, but hey ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Gary:

Peter! So nice to see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Gary:

Have a great night, Bob! And have a terrific year moving forward!
Avatar 8:02pm ndbob:

@Holly Well I certainly would agree with the retraining
Avatar 8:02pm steve:

Gary sorry ive been coming and going... are you looking for specific book genres?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Gary:

No specific genres -- just anything interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Gary:

I almost never read contemporary fiction, tho -- unless it's been translated from another language.
Avatar 8:04pm glenn:

glad to be here, gary! got off work just in time. oh! another great recent read was "aloha america: hula circuits through the u.s. empire" by adria l. amada

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Gary:

Avatar 8:09pm steve:

best books this master dilettante read this year (that I can remember):

The Stench of Honolulu by Jack Handey
A Wild Sheep Chase by Murakami
Bleeding Edge by Thomas Pynchon

Life After Death by Damien Echols
Dishwasher by Pete Jordan
Harpo Speaks! by Harpo Marx

Stuff Matters by Mark Miodownik
You Are Now Less Dumb by McRaney

What We See When We Read by Peter Mendelsund
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If you haven't, everybody here should should read 'This is Your Brain on Music' by Daniel Levitin @ some point. He's both a neuro-scientist & a music producer. Thx for tip on 'Perfecting Sound Forever' !
  8:11pm ?:

God, I remember seeing PE in about 1990 in Minneapolis. There was a guy standing next to me who thought he was "so cool." Turned out to be Prince!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Gary:

You guys are totally coming through for me ... !
Avatar 8:11pm steve:

oh duh also the new Oliver Sachs book Hallucinations (the Levitin mention reminded me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

Holy shit - seriously, Erik? Xtreme jealousy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Stanley:

Gary, have you read 'The Music in My Head' by Mark Hudson? One man losing it in the music scene in Dakar. Recommended.
  8:15pm Doug Schulkind:

I got a bio of Eugene Debs for Xmas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Gary:

I haven't read that one, Stanley -- will definitely check it out
  8:15pm ?:

Gary, totally true. Then, at the same PE show, I turned to my right. . . Garrison Keillor!
Avatar 8:16pm Holly in NC:

@steve - thank you for recommending Damien Echol's book. I've followed the WM3 since initial doc and firmly believe they're not any of them guilty, but was worried Damien's book might be a cash grab. Now I'll check it out.

Apparently crazy stepfather exonerated also, but wtf?

And again: anyone here fallen into the Serial rabbit hole?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Gary:

Ha ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Gary:

I've downloaded Serial, but haven't yet listened ...
Avatar 8:17pm Holly in NC:

@? - PE concert, Prince to your left, Garrison Keillor to your right - NOONE could ever make that up. You win best story, forever!
Avatar 8:20pm steve:

Life After Death is one of the top 5 best bios ive ever read (and i love bios and memoirs).

HOWEVER the followup (whose name I can't remember.. Yours For Eternity i think its called?) which is a collection of love letters between Damien and his future wife, is, arguably, a cash grab, and while emotionally powerful definitely did not make my best of list...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm listener james from westwood:

I enjoyed Roxane Gay's "Bad Feminist" & Charles Blow's memoir, "Fire Shut Up in My Bones." Also Penny Red's "Unspeakable Things." Mostly nonfiction and essays this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm listener james from westwood:

I've got about 8 library books to start 2015 off with, incl. 2 on life in Victorian London and/or England by the same author. The fact that my job is essentially all reading (editing or proofing) does take up a bit of my leisure reading, but I hope to read more for myself next year (~25 leisure books in 24).
Avatar 8:28pm Holly in NC:

ooh steel pan drums yes yes!

GARY! Your wonderful girlfriend, sister & Mom are probably pushing same or similar, but this I guarantee - if not helpful, you need to go see a medical professional stat:
- slug of whiskey, scotch, rum, or bourbon
- huge squeeze of lemon
- big glug of honey
- lg pinch cayenne
- lg coin fresh ginger, bruised, or a shitstorm of dried
- mix with water to fill vessel of choice, heat or nuke
- top up with more (fresh) booze, honey, lemon & cayenne

Drink. IF not leaving house, repeat.

Sleep, for at least 8 hours. Call in all love & favors to allow you to sleep for 8 hours.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Gary:

Thank you for that, Holly! I used to make a sort of cayenne, ginger and one other ingredient that I've forgotten "espresso" by boiling the 3 down in water until it was almost too thick to drink.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm northguineahills:

@Holly, that sounds like an amazing cocktail I'd drink, sick or not.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Uncle Michael:

I'm late. I apologize.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gary:

Tio Miguel!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Uncle Michael:

Been listening for over an hour but I was working on my show and maintaining focus.
  8:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Remember when international rap was basically MC Solaar and a few others.
  8:38pm ?:

Oh, and Holly. . . guess who was behind me. . . Jesse Ventura!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Gary:

I'm waiting for the hipster labels to start compiling international hip hop collections the way they do now for psych and garage
Avatar 8:39pm Holly in NC:

Bad me, I forget that way before The Roots were mainstream, they were (& still are) pretty dang awesome. NO denying this song.

Thank you, Gary!

(Mom mode) - go make that drink!

@ngh - it's wonderful, but not a cocktail. If made & used appropriately, you will go to bed, and sleep hard... and Gary sounds so awful he might need 2! ;-)
  8:39pm peter:

Avatar 8:39pm Holly in NC:

@? -OK, now I want proof. No way, ;-)
  8:40pm ?:

But the Prince part was true
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm Gary:

Erik, the closest I ever got to Prince was being blocked by his wedding procession (cars) as I was on my way to my job at Legal Aid.
  8:42pm ?:

He does that all the time to legal aid employees.

Avatar 9:01pm Holly in NC:

@20 Benson & Hedges:
I smoked, A LOT for many years. A LOT. Anyway, when I first started, after going through the usual teenage gateway Marlboro/Newport/More cigs, and a flirtation with Players, for an embarrassingly long time was all about "Benson & Hedges Ultra Light Menthol 100s" because yes, they existed, and what fun to say! I was such an idiot.

Eww! Hey, how is Bonny doing?
  9:08pm Erik B.:

She's excellent. Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm listener james from westwood:

Dammit, the mobile app ate my comment. My maternal grandparents' nail of choice was Benson & Hedges. Their daughter preferred More Menthol by the time I was on the scene. Dad, Pall Mall until he made the superhuman decision to quit cold turkey in 1980. Friends of mine favor(ed) Marlboro reds, Dunghills, or, inexplicably, Djarums.
  9:09pm Erik B.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Gary:

Happy New Year, Erik!
  9:14pm Erik B.:

You too, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm northguineahills:

  9:20pm listener james from westwood:

Foam earplugs for sleeping are the bomb and have kept me out of prison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm northguineahills:

I used to have a downstairs neighbor whose band would cover Exile on Main Street at all hours non-stop for months.
  9:27pm listener james from westwood:

My next door neighbor in sophomore year of college would blast the first Jane's Addiction record each day, it seemed, on his mega speakers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Gary:

That's horrible, NGH. We had a band out in the backyard next to us playing terribly performed death metal. The bass would penetrate the whole apartment.
  9:30pm peter:

my neighbours in sunset park would play rammstein's "du hast" at least 4 times in a row every morning, followed by cumbia for the rest of the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Gary:

That's an odd, but oddly compelling, combo, Peter
  9:33pm peter:

oh, that's every *sunday* morning, the lord's day. the cumbia was every day, though
  9:34pm peter:

i know! i was into it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Gary:

I freaking missed seeing these guys at the beer garden two summers ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm northguineahills:

@Gary: To this day, I can't listen to the Stones version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Gary:

NGH, do you like Liz Phair's album?
Avatar 9:47pm Holly in NC:

@ljfw - Djarums are kinda inexplicable, but then again, so is smoking in general. Chain-smoking defined my life for many years, and I'm not unintelligent or irrational ..so...
* my grownup cig = Camel Lights, and then American Spirit Yellows, which I smoked WAY before any hipsters caught on, as a crotchety old school 'scenester' I want credit ;-)
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Uncle Michael:

I freaking love "Du Hast."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm northguineahills:

I've missed that, and my college gf listened to Liz Phair non-stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm northguineahills:

I forgot the Last Poets recorded together this late.
Avatar 9:56pm Holly in NC:

I can sing all of Liz Phair's 1st lp by heart, but haven't put it on my own changer in at least 10 years. But maybe I should - those songs are embedded in my brain for a good reason. Just so disliked everything that followed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Gary:

That album was amazing ... I've heard it in the last couple of months, and it does totally hold up.
  9:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for the party, Gary!
  9:59pm listener james from westwood:

Holly: I never had any urge for a cigarette, but I often grabbed a cigar when out in Las Vegas. Then none for a long time, then I tried one on my 40th and spent the rest of the day Googling tobacco poisoning and lying in bed. None since!
