Looking FORWARD to this. (As usual.)
Avatar 6:58pm ndbob:

evening Gary and everyone!
Avatar 6:59pm ndbob:

Heya Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Gary:

Hey Bob and Doug! Just finished up cooking dinner while Fela was playing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm listener james from westwood:

I just finished eating dinner before your intro started playing! How now, Gary and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Gary:

Howdy James! The new addition to the intro was "Taylor" made by Doug
  7:02pm Jill B.:

Good evening Gary, Doug, NoDak Bob. Westwood James, and everyone yet to chat in. When will the WFMU mascot be announced?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm cklequ:

For once i get here early.
Is there something new in the intro, or have i just never listened before?
Avatar 7:02pm glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm cklequ:

and you answer my question before i even ask......
Avatar 7:03pm glenn:

measure once, cut twice.
Avatar 7:05pm hyde:

supra saharan?
Avatar 7:06pm hyde:

@Jill B: they announced the mascot today. I was crushed my one eyed cat was beaten by a lousy dog.
Avatar 7:06pm ndbob:

amazing Glenn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm davex:

Hey Gary! Maybe you can talk a little about music blog culture and that sort of thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

Mom! Cklequ! Glenn! Hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

I'll see what I can do, Dave
Avatar 7:09pm hyde:

@Jill here's the mascot gallery with the winner mentioned at the top: www.flickr.com...

I think my cat was handicappedby the preponderance of one eyed cats. I think there are 4?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Gary:

@Cklequ: Taylor Swift explaining what a bodega is was added in, thanks to a clip Doug sent along a week or so ago
  7:10pm Doug Schulkind:

All your flea-bag darlings are winners. Except the dachshunds. They are wieners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Gary:

@Hyde ... that makes, dare I say it, Four Eyes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm cklequ:

I was voting for at least one of those one eyed cats. Even though i had a two eyed cat of my own in the running.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Gary:

Anyone know where Miss Smodern hails from? This cut was taken off a popular pan-African album of the 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm davex:

Thanks, Gary! I'd be interested to know how it all works, what the boundaries are, etc.
  7:15pm MrFab:

yo Gary! Way stoked for today's show, I luuurvs African music. Never heard of Miss Smodern before, but this track is pure South African mbaqanga.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Gary:

Mr. Fab! That sounds plausible, yeah -- if I had been forced to guess, I would've probably gone with SA
  7:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Yup, South Africa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

Thanks, Doug -- and, speaking of SA ... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Gary:

This particular track ranks waaaay up on my all-time favorite pop songs.
  7:24pm Jill B.:

Pearl says she has put in a call to the local SPCA for animal cruelty/dachshund abuse because of having to pose for two hours as Shirley Temple Black and Tan! Congratulations to Munro! But Pearl thinks she is cuter!!!

Great African music tonight....my favorite!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Gary:

I thought Pearl would win. Did you make the hat, Mom?
  7:27pm Jill B.:

No, I did not make the hat.....Goodwill......just glued on the wig and WFMU decal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Gary:

I thought you were going to weave a hat!
  7:40pm Jill B.:

Gary, you are right....I was....my world is full of good intentions!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gary:

That describes nearly everyone's world, I think :)
Avatar 7:42pm glenn:

the road to hell etc. etc.
Avatar 7:42pm northguineahills:

National Wake, nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm davex:

This Kuku Sebsebe is very interesting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Gary:

NGH! Yeah, I was going to do a whole SA punk set, but decided to just do NW
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Gary:

@Dave ... found it in DC a year or two ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm davex:

Where do you find these places, Gary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Gary:

@Dave, that place I didn't find, I was actually led to by a guy who saw me waiting sadly outside of Nahomi. He asked if I was looking for Ethiopian music. I said I was. And he said to follow him across the street ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm davex:

That is just amazing. Don't get that much around here!
Avatar 7:57pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary! catch the rest on the archive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Gary:

Have a great night, Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Gary:

PLEDGE THANKS to Bob from Charlottesville, VA, who gave in support of BPL on WFMU's GTDR earlier this week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Gary:

This next track came from a Copy / Nollywood DVD shop in East Elmhurst I stumbled upon while riding my bike one Saturday a few years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm fleep:

Stumbling while riding your bike takes talent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Gary:

@fleep My talent is latent :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm listener james from westwood:

Great tour, this first hour!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Gary:

Grazie, James!
Avatar 8:21pm hyde:

I missed most of those African Pearls recs on Reneshoua. There was so much good stuff on that blog last time around I gave short shrift to the Africa and funk records. But hell, I'm still trying to get through everything else I got there and they've been gone for months.
Avatar 8:23pm hyde:

wow, this track is amazing.
Avatar 8:24pm tim abdellah:

Hiya Gary! - This rules!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Gary:

Tim! So nice to see you!
  8:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Email me and let me know which African Pearls collections you missed/want.
Avatar 8:41pm hyde:

@Doug oh hey, thanks. I'll do that if I ever get through this backlog! I still have Italian Treasury and Field Recordings recs from Reneshoua I haven't even listened to yet!
  8:42pm Jill B.:

Sakhodougou was terrific!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm cklequ:

That Sakhodougou could have gone on for another 20 minutes, and i would have just sat here in a trance. Cutting circles from paper. As i do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Gary:

Laday Talata I found in the Bronx, in a sort of drugstore / 99 cent store on White Plains Boulevard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Gary:

Speaking of the Pearls series ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Shablooey! Bodega Pop Live is only $33 short of hitting the goal!

Hit! That! Goal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Gary:

Goal me! Goal me, ppl!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Doug Schulkind:

I have that Lady Talata record!
Avatar 9:07pm glenn:

mali ringwald?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Vinyl, baby!
Avatar 9:08pm hyde:

heh, that is me exactly with Reneshoua. I was grabbing so much old timey American and blues stuff and anything they'd put up that came out between 1900-1950 that I just couldn't face all of the funk and African and Jamaican stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Doug Schulkind:

The first and last book on Fela you need to reat is Carlos Moore's "Fela Fela This Bitch of a Life." I have a copy published by Allison & Busby, London. Here's a review on JSTOR: www.jstor.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Gary:

THANK YOU, Doug! Will get right on that after the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Doug Schulkind:

That book was actually published before Fela died, so it's not a sweeping epic bio. It's more an "as told to" insider account of the life and times. Carlos Moore was a close confidant of Fela's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Gary:

That sounds thrilling, though -- maybe more so than an after-the-fact overview
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Doug Schulkind:

The original publication was in French and carried the title Fela, Fela — Cette Putain De Vie (Fela, Fela — This Motherfucking Life)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Doug Schulkind:

HOLY CRAP! Bodega Pop Live is just 33¢ short of the goal. And because of that, it's showing as 99%. HOLY CRAP!

The witheringly intelligent DAN IN PROVIDENCE has brought us all to the brink. THANKS Dan! Now who will push Gary over the top?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Gary:

ANOTHER PLEDGE THANKS to DAN in Providence! We are 33 cents -- three dimes and three pennies -- from hitting the goal!
  9:24pm anonymous party:

Hey... i gave my 33 bucks, but it's still at 99 percent.

What gives?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Gary:

Anonymous Party, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Doug Schulkind:

@anonymous party
Because the official amount required to hit 100% was $33.33. The pledge widget thingy only shows round numbers. Sorry for the confusion.
  9:26pm anonymous party:

Had i known, i would have made it an even $33.33.

A near palindrome.
Avatar 9:36pm hyde:

I'm already excited about the Cambodia show!
Avatar 9:45pm northguineahills:

A big hand or two for anonymous party!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Gary:

Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Ike:

I'm exceedingly late, but I made it here! Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Gary:

We! Like! Ike!
Avatar 9:57pm tim abdellah:

Great hearing you tonight! If I gotta work late, at least I get to stream some choice cuts. Thx for the Gnama Kante.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks a ton, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Uncle Michael:

Sorry I was so late.
Avatar 9:58pm northguineahills:

Oh, crap, it's ten! Thanks Gary!
Avatar 9:58pm hyde:

awwww, closing theme. that is the sound of sadness.

thanks Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Still about a minute to push this show over the top! A pledge of anything more than 32¢ will do the trick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Ike:

You can always trust me to speak out against the Funk Junk Punk Industrial Complex.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm cklequ:

Somebody give this guy 33 cents already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Gary:

Thanks everyone, and have a terrific night!
