A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar 9:04am d¢ pät:

wow. nice paintin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Trouble:

phew first fire put out, appropriate given this painting by fortunato depero: an italian futurist who was prolific in his creativity. look him up. he designed sets, ballet outfits, furniture, glassware, in addition to painting.
Avatar 9:08am d¢ pät:

I'll check him out. Can't stand the futurists for the most part but this I can deal with.
  9:09am paula pc:

this batagov release is just neverendingly fantastic

wow, thanks for the art tip. This one is fantastic:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Trouble:

dcpat: i felt similarly until i saw the futurists show at guggenheim last year: mind opened!
Avatar 9:14am d¢ pät:

good point. This is my futurist gateway painter right here.

Trouble Goodmorning! I attended the free jazz showing at the Patterson Free Library and it was FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC.

Thanks for the heads up! Have a show!
Avatar 9:18am Sem Chumbo:

I used to be a past-ist but I am now a born-again futurist. Morning, Trouble, and troubles big and small, past, present and future, wherever you may be.

Lovely song here. Lots of star clicking this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Futurism tended towards unfortunate SocioPolitical Ideals or Movements - no? But it would've been impossible for Art to not react to the new sensations of the 20thCentury w/ enthusiasm by somebody.

- I'm always on about Rawk Subcultures being African-American Rhythm & Blues
- plus some European Art Movement :
- Psychedelia =s Surrealism + R&B
- Punk =s DaDA + R&B
...& Mod =s Futurism & R&B (or maybe PopArt)
- Rawk, after all, has been a vehicle for every sort of SocioPolitical affiliation (Punk alone!) - & generally in line w/ Futurist ideas about Youth & even Violence (...shades of previous weeks consideration of Juvenalia & Rebellion complexes...)

Even w/in Futurism - there are distinct Aesthetic groups? Yes?Some are more like Abstraction, or Expressionism - & some are more - urm - PopArtish? Poster-like...or something ?? I thot I liked the lattter, & was a little surprised to find the Former...
  9:34am r i s k y:

DJ TRUBZ in the building!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- okay: what is that plaintive two-note birdsong right there - ? I have thot it was the Chickadee - but I'm starting to wonder...
Avatar 9:36am d¢ pät:

if you need reactions to 20th century I think your best bet is the dadaists... the pro-war bullshit is what turned me off the futurists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am adrian in mpls:

@dc pat - i feel the same way about the futurists. their alignment with fascism was, to put it lightly, highly problematic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- okay yeah - chickadees got a few they do :
- zactly dc pat ; dAda reacted against the ModernWorld & WWI - & the Futurists got all into it...How that found echoes or parallels in Rawk SubCultures is a problem for my own thesis...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & it's maybe a little like the question of what exactly Shostakovich's intentions under Stalin's gaze were...
Avatar 9:45am FernandoBelmondo:

You melt my heart with Melodia...
Avatar 9:46am Sem Chumbo:

At the moment, I am an ardent Brazil-ist.
Avatar 9:46am d¢ pät:

brings up the age-old problem of separating the art from the artist. For example, I really dig Celine. His books to me are in line with what the dadaists were all about. But turns out, he was a Nazi apologist. Jerk.
Avatar 9:47am d¢ pät:

Shostakovich was sneaky though--his true intentions came out in the string quartets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...we could of course just Blame it on the Bossaa Nova
...also: I think I conflated the Russian Constructivists w/ Futurism (is what I was getting @) - 'cause I like that stuff...
Avatar 9:51am bobdoesthings:

ugh.. where are my dancin' shoes..
Avatar 9:51am d¢ pät:

I can see that.
Avatar 9:52am duke:

@dc pat You wonder how much of the politics comes through in the works. I have been reading a little bit of Heidegger lately. He was brilliant, but a Nazi asshole. You start to wonder how that affects what he was trying to say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am adrian in mpls:

i guess i usually tend to think that one's politics tends to find representation in one's art -- even if it comes out in unconscious ways...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- neat-o radio4 doc on RobertWyatt :
- this is a great series overall :
Avatar 9:54am PKNY:

This Joe Bataan track is the JAM.
Avatar 9:54am d¢ pät:

sometimes it just doesn't make sense though--Celine is a perfect example. One of the first honest, horrifying descriptions of modern war--you'd think he'd be a hippie. But no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - Wyatt to Bataan was pretty sly !...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Trouble:

joe bataan plays nov 1 in jersey city : 222 laidlaw street ( middle school #7)!!!
Avatar 9:57am doca:

Hiya, Trouble! Loving the show, as usual
Avatar 9:59am still b/p:

A huge epic mural of play and battle and fantasy cooperatively created 50% by Depero and 50% by Irwin's man Jim Flora would be some kinda somethin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...my beloved Kerouac ! : a-political/Republican (shudder)...He Loved 'Merica - yerknow; the OldSchool Patriotism...heck - there might even be an FMU-J or two...
Avatar 10:01am d¢ pät:

exactly @RRN63, and he was a dang Canadian! I think that happens a lot, people who adopt USA become overly patriotic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am SeanG:

sweet prince track
  10:01am paula pc:

why are people ragging on this record? I like it!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am adrian in mpls:

@dc pat - i see what yr saying. and people's politics are riddled with contradictions, change with time, etc. and i haven't read enough celine to know how his views on race, colonialism and anti-semitism affect his work.
Avatar 10:06am d¢ pät:

that's part of it: changing views. maybe you could find some hints of his political views in his work but I, for one, was surprised that some one who was apparently so appalled at how human nature manifested itself in modern warfare could possible support fascism.
Avatar 10:07am doca:

Those new Prince albums are just great
Avatar 10:11am glenn:

i know i've mentioned it before, but i like to brag. the guitarist for third eye girl lives in my neighbourhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Intelligent people whose Politics weird you out is ...a Thing.

...Thing about Prince is - he *could* do anything. So you wonder what he's bothering w/ & what he's really about. Like Nick Cave is as good a Writer who ever bothered w/ Rawk - so - what is he *on about* - ?!?...
Avatar 10:14am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

I always thought beatniks were more revolutionary/counter culture than hippies.
  10:15am r i s k y:

JC Record Riot on Nov1st too at the Grove St PATH.

(No reason to leave JC)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Brian in UK:

Beatniks lived in black & white.
Hippies lived in colour.
'Sign of the times'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- wull - there's the Apolitical aspect to Hippie : they shot JFK so follow the Beatles & TurnOn TuneIn - DropOut. Also - Hippies're the Antithesis to the Thesis of the MiddleClass...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am robyn:

dangit i missed tarwater. trouble, i met sharon van etten when she was in austin two weekends ago..she was lovely and had a great sense of humor, too. i told her i knew of her through your show :) she loves you and jeffrey.
  10:18am Pelvique:

I think that's a later, generic impression of hippies after they entered the common consciousness. In any case, they had cooler glasses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am sphere:

Dub is the way to start your morning (I'm on the West Coast this week).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- there's the distinction between the Beat Writers & the Beatniks - but generally they were Literate & Intellectual...
...still wishing for a 24/7 Stream of Dub as good as this...
Avatar 10:22am d¢ pät:

Avatar 10:23am d¢ pät:

speaking of which, just saw Black Lips. I was expecting overthetop zanyness but got quality kick ass Rawk instead. Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If Trouble had never done anything else - she intro'd me to Lonnie Holley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am common:

dc pat: my band opened for them in the early 2000s. it was overthetop zanyness with puking. great!
Avatar 10:27am d¢ pät:

yeah, I think they've grown up a bit.
Avatar 10:59am d¢ pät:

man. I guess the Black Lips were a conversation killer...
Avatar 11:04am ranjit:
