Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm northguineahills:

Good news: The State of New York Dept of Taxing and Finance unfroze my checking account. Bad News: They took all of my money.

For my wife's visa requirement, we had to open a joint account, and to prove to the dept of homeland security that we aren't welfare cases, she put $10k of her money in our account. This drew flag w/ the taxing dept, b/c it made it look like I had money when I signed an agreement that I'm unemployed w/ a minimal amount of means to pay my debt. So, I was working w/ a payment plan after I dropped a $1k down payment last July. They initially took $7k from our j oint account, but after proving to them it was her money, they gave it back. Crazy month.

Hopefully good news: I nailed a final interview for a job I actually want here in the City w/ only two other candidates.
Avatar 3:30pm Kevlicki:

I'll have to go back and listen to the Macka B track!
One summer I spent many hours listening to a cassette of his, since it was the only one we could play in the car.
I remember an amusing song 9 months of Pregnancy and another of his offense towards Hollywood "it makes me mad, when they try to make Rasta look bad", a true earworm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Stevel:

NGH: Ain't love grand? Government, too. Hoping this means you are moving forward with things. Break a leg re. the job interview.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm northguineahills:

The lesson, make sure your job takes out state taxes and make sure when you use an online site to file your taxes, call the respective agencies to make sure they received it (this dates back to 2007-2009.

@Cheri Pi: I borrowed from friends, and now I'm liquidating my retirement fund.
Avatar 3:42pm Cheri Pi:

get that job NGH, I hope you can build up your retirement again, that's no joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm northguineahills:

I was going to take a job outside the City, but I have to stay in the City until my wife's visa goes through, so, this new opportunity couldn't come at a better time.
  3:43pm dug:

Avatar 3:44pm GeesyCreesy:

@dug- Seconding those Vice City flashbacks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Caryn:

Right now, looking at retirement, I'm gonna be getting about 25 euros a month. Not an ideal situation.
Avatar 3:45pm Cecile:

that sucks NGH. That's a big reason why I'm slowly transitioning to a different career - good (and hard earned/fought) retirement benefits.
  3:45pm Dorkus Mallorcus:

I've heard of lame excuses to not pledge, but this one takes the cake!
  3:48pm Dean:

The retirement situation in the US started sucking approximately when defined benefit plans gave way to defined contribution, a.k.a. every man and woman for his/herself. (Set aside the fact that some DB plans are abysmally mismanaged.) Planning for retirement is not easy! http://bipartisanpolicy.org/library/report/retirement-security-personal-savings

"Anarchy in the U.K." was out before Spiral Scratch.
  4:00pm JakeGould:

Donna Summer reminds me of Donna Summer Day Camp. AKA: Me going to day camp in the summer & counsellors listening to Donna Summer.
  4:01pm Ray:

That was genius set. Do u have all those records in 45s? Man, I freaking envy you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm northguineahills:

If I get this job, I will be employed by the City, so I'll have job security. Sick of 6 month subcontracting jobs w/ no benefits.
  4:02pm Dean:

And I believe The Damned's "New Rose" preceded "Anarchy."
Avatar 4:04pm Cheri Pi:

haven't heard this Lene song since the 80's
Avatar 4:05pm Kurt Gottschalk:

yr right dean, it was the damned.
  4:07pm Dean:

I visited London late that year, '76. I'll never forget hearing Blondie's first album at the Virgin Records shop across from Hyde Park Corner and purchasing "Anarchy" from a rack at some drug store.

Ran Tan Waltz is an interesting little tune
Avatar 4:55pm Cecile:

now Tom is a BBC DJ, married with kids and a strong advocate for bisexual and gay rights.
  4:55pm Dean:

Graham Parker hasn't stopped complaining. He appeared in Berkeley for a solo gig a few years ago. Between tunes he ranted about the unfairness of not being more financially successful, but also took to task fans of Squeezing Out Sparks, because it was too successful.
  4:56pm dug:

Phil schaap!
Avatar 4:57pm Cecile:

Dean, it was his best record. There was a reason, great production, and he had to toe the line.
  4:59pm Dean:

Cecile, Agreed. I love that record, top to bottom. But he seems to resent that he peaked, in a way, way back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm northguineahills:

My favorite Eugene Chadbourne release was a cassette that came in an used unwashed gym sock.
Avatar 5:01pm Cecile:

I can understand that, but by now you'd think he'd come to terms with it.

Avatar 5:04pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i would love to see some more pledges during this show.
  5:04pm Dean:

Yeah, maybe venting is his way of coming to terms. There's a record from the Berkeley show: http://www.grahamparker.net/FreightAndSalvage.html Notably, songs from SOS he performed -- "Discovering Japan," "Local Girls" -- do not appear. (But "Passion..." is there.) Also, I see there's a 6-CD box of live stuff with The Rumour! http://www.grahamparker.net/Official_Bootleg_Box.html

This single comes with a unique original pen-on-paper drawing.
Avatar 5:17pm Cecile:

I think I sold this one for beer money
Avatar 5:17pm Sem Chumbo:

See ya, common!
  5:18pm Fredericks:

This stuff seems too energetic to be termed nostalgia.
  5:22pm Dean:

So is the Donna Summer the only 12" single in the queue today?
Avatar 5:24pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

away for meeting, back in time for god-damned lovely VON LMO... haven't heard this single in ages. Bleshu.
Avatar 5:24pm kirk from beer city usa:

holy shit, von lmo!
  5:26pm r i s k y:

Go Kurt!
Avatar 5:28pm Kurt Gottschalk:

donna summer is a 7" too, i just marked it as a 45 for some reason
  5:29pm Dean:

I thought perhaps for two reasons.
Avatar 5:29pm Cecile:

A 45 is usually a 7" isn't it?
Avatar 5:30pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Speaking of Von - that Red Transistor single is definitely one of my two favorite singles of all time. Must go home & hug it in the manner of a creepy hug.
  5:30pm Dean:

There are 12" 45s, although I'm at a loss just now to remember which ones are which.
  5:31pm Fredericks:

Donna Summer sounds like Jerry Butler.
  5:32pm P-90:

Donna Summer has a really lovely tenor voice at 33 rpm. Really.
  5:32pm Dean:

So far, then, we've been treated to 24 feet, 6 inches of music, diametrically speaking.
Avatar 5:33pm rjk:

Re bed music, when did Scott Walker record On the Radio?
Avatar 5:35pm Kevlicki:

Kurt, I had that patch sewn to a hoodie I wore to school everyday, and eventually ended up on a pair of pants that I think I wore to death. That ran for nearly 4 years, and I still may have it in a box somewhere. The things I didn't let go of...
  5:35pm Dean:

Bauhaus' "Third Uncle": 12", 45rpm
  5:39pm P-90:

Dean: There's an idea: next year there could be a "Singles-o-meter" feature, a little widget on the playlist pages showing the cumulative linear length of singles played during the week...
  5:41pm Dean:

A marvel it would be, especially if it tracked the extent of the spiral scratch (to allude to an earlier playlist item), rather than the disk diameters.
  5:41pm P-90:

...and with a metric conversion for our friends all over the world
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm paul b:

I did grow up in the Boston Area: Plymouth & Holliston (DC area now). This rambling version of Roadrunner is the just bomb AND IT IS TALKING TO ME!
  5:42pm P-90:

Is there a standard "groove length" for discs of different diameters at different speeds?
  5:46pm Dean:

I have no basis other than intuition for an opinion, but it seems to me there's probably an *average* groove length that's good enough for a fair approximation. But differences in mastering and playing time would cause serious deviations.

Nels Cline and Mike Watt are in the middle of this mess.
Avatar 5:47pm Cecile:

I have this single as well.
