I hope that gif is not Rick Nelson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm common:

dammit! hey kurt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm DCE:

whoa, cool version!
Avatar 3:04pm steve:

toxic avenger?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Carmichael:

Holy Bowie, Batman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm northguineahills:

Nicely put, Carmichael.
  3:06pm Phillip in Brooklyn:

Afternoon Kurt:-) I hope you got your phone back from Bryce:-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Carmichael:

He's probably running up roaming fees by calling his pals in Zeta Reticuli 2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Carmichael:

Gotta go eat. See ya again.
Avatar 3:10pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hey everybody! thanks for tuning in. and please let me politely remind you of the october fundraiser. see the banner at the top of the playlist and consider supporting miniature minotaurs and wfmu.
Avatar 3:13pm βrian:

Such a classic, this! We're off to the airports.
  3:16pm P-90:

PRIMO set, great start! Hi DJ Kurt and all Mini-Minotoreadors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Mike East:

Mark Stewart of Bang on a Can was NOT on Diane's show yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Mike East:

Moppa Elliott, who has been in our studio and is a good friend of my coworker is on today's show. very cool indeed.
Avatar 3:21pm kat330:

Hi, Kurt and peeps! Jeff's image evokes a face we saw just Tuesday evening in the film "Under the Skin.
Avatar 3:22pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Yeah, definitely looking forward to talking to Moppa about his note-for-note recreation of "Kind of Blue"
Avatar 3:23pm Sem Chumbo:

What size monocle would a miniature minotaur need, I wonder? Is there an optometrist in the audence? Hiya, Kurt, and toreadors brave to pick on a short sighted, and short, generally, minotaur.
Avatar 3:23pm Parq:

Not for nothing, but having spent a (mercifully) little time in airports in the past ten years, I can just imaging the confused look and caustic comments that would arise if you actually played that piece in a U.S. airport nowadays.
Avatar 3:25pm Kurt Gottschalk:

there was an airport in europe that played it for a while. someone out there probably knows which one. and i've often listened to it in airports. it's very soothing.
Avatar 3:25pm kat330:

That "Music for Airports" was gorgeous. And apropos. In a few hours, I will be outnumbered 2 to 1 by Finn-men. Philo's bro is flying from Helsinki to stay with us (just landed in Chicago).
  3:27pm P-90:

It's still the defining classic of "ambient" IMO. And very soothing indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm northguineahills:

They played it for a Brian Eno Event 10 years ago at JFK (where drunken people trashed the terminal and peed in the plants, etc)
Avatar 3:28pm Kurt Gottschalk:

nice
  3:28pm P-90:

There was a "Brian Eno Event" at JFK?! Was he there?
Avatar 3:28pm βrian:

I hope he does a sequel: Music for Call Centers.
Avatar 3:29pm Cecile:

Why would someone want to remake Kind of Blue?
Avatar 3:30pm Cecile:

not a value judgment, just curiosity and puzzlement.
  3:31pm P-90:

@Cecile: A legit question om a few levels...
  3:32pm adam_nspy:

Try it note for note next time pshh
Avatar 3:33pm βrian:

A twentieth anniversary tribute, maybe?
  3:34pm P-90:

Malcolm Young?
Avatar 3:34pm Cecile:

Malcolm Young
Avatar 3:35pm Cecile:

that's a good sign. He'd supposedly had a stroke or something.
Avatar 3:36pm Cecile:

"version"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Malcom suffering from dementia, according to news reports I've seen this week.
Avatar 3:39pm kat330:

Aki is also a Finnish name, lending credence to my theory the languages are connected (or at least Hawaiian if not Japanese). Where's Caryn?
  3:39pm P-90:

That's because he nevr wore ear plugs
Avatar 3:40pm Cecile:

oh, that's tough Ken.
Avatar 3:50pm βrian:

Frankly, there are times I'd like to see a progress meter...
Avatar 3:53pm Kurt Gottschalk:

what kind of progress meter?
  3:55pm P-90:

Doesn't the cow go "moo" or something?
Avatar 3:56pm Kurt Gottschalk:

need someone to pledge before i'll turn on the meter. i don't want to look at it at 0%.
Avatar 3:56pm steve:

do i hear a Sachiko M?
Avatar 3:57pm Kurt Gottschalk:

yep. she's in there!
Avatar 3:57pm Kurt Gottschalk:

last time i played an otomo yoshihide jazz group i got a call from upstairs making sure the transmitter wasn't broken!
Avatar 3:59pm 37:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Mike East:

Avatar 4:05pm Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks, 37!
Avatar 4:06pm Cecile:

you can just do this kind of jazz for your whole show, and I'd be thrilled.
Avatar 4:09pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i don't know how to do one kind of thing my whole show, cecile!
Avatar 4:12pm kat330:

@Kurt: What about Friday the 13th's?
Avatar 4:12pm Kurt Gottschalk:

that's a different kind of one kind of thing!
Avatar 4:14pm kat330:

Avatar 4:25pm Fredericks:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm common:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm northguineahills:

Did Lester cover David Bowie on this album?
Avatar 4:37pm Cecile:

that does sound amazing.
  4:37pm marmalade kitty:

Hello Kurt! everyone!
Avatar 4:38pm Parq:

I assume it's intentional that this sounds like a really cool high school marching band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm northguineahills:

@Steve: Wow!
  4:47pm marmalade kitty:

sounds like the KPM version
  4:48pm Dean:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm common:

  4:57pm marmalade kitty:

Avatar 4:57pm 37:

interesting.... yes
it seemed more apparent when broadcast that when I was just listening myself... interesting... maybe the broadcast compression affected the mix somehow
  4:58pm Dean:

I have a recording of Miles Davis doing a note-for-note recreation of Shamokin!!!
Avatar 4:58pm 37:

still... nice!!!

LOVE MOPDTK!!
  4:58pm marmalade kitty:

Common, Just what I was thinking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Carmichael:

Chuggsies, common. Although I have a good chana masala buzz goin' on ...
  5:08pm Dean:

Glenn Gould, anybody?
  5:10pm Dean:

Related to this conversation, Derrida interviewing Ornette: http://www.openculture.com/2014/09/jacques-derrida-interviews-ornette-coleman.html
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm adrian in mpls:

that derrida-coleman interview has really been making the rounds lately -- at least it's been popping up in my world a lot. saw a really mediocre job talk for a professorship that focused quite a bit on this interview a couple of years ago. of course, that person got the job.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm northguineahills:

My wife's friend is MIA's official photographer. He's not into her music, she just liked his work. (he's more into psyche noise, so we get along swimmingly)
  5:27pm Dean:

Who is Huge Billy Joel?
  5:30pm Dean:

DMG is just marvelous. Love that store.
  5:31pm marmalade kitty:

suits you, sir!
  5:39pm P-90:

@Dean: Thanks for that link
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm northguineahills:

I'm glad I got to see the Thing at Zebulon two years ago, they rocked!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm northguineahills:

Gotta go, thanks Kurt & Moppa!
Avatar 5:54pm Sem Chumbo:

Lovely time, much appreciated. See ya later, Kurt.
Avatar 5:55pm Cecile:

Jon Irabagon plays in that band? He's great.
  5:55pm Dean:

Ten bucks says within a year there will be a small population of avid listeners who will be able to pick out the original and the MOPDTK versions in a matter of split seconds.

For a great jazz cover de-jazzed, btw, Claw Hammer's assault on Caravan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlDdpJj7Zxw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Carmichael:

Thanks, Kurt. Nice face, MN Jeff!
Avatar 5:57pm Cecile:

this solo is funny. He's throwing in licks from a bunch of popular songs to my ears.
  5:58pm P-90:

Thanks, Kurt, even more fun when I get to listen live!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm chris:

yeah, agreed, Cecile, loving this solo :D
