Nice start, Joe! We need some groovy jams to get us through this bummer bob of a day outside. (Bummer Bob was a member of the Manson family who would occasionally refrain from the orgies Charlie would orchestrate--therefore, he was a bummer.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am doctorjazz:

Jonathan Schwartz got me to appreciate Mel Torme (I don't know who will get me to be able to stand listening to Jonathan Schwartz for more than a few minutes at a time, though)
Avatar 10:19am Cecile:

George Michael once covered Was/Not Was's Where Did Our Love Go?, and it was weird. He even sang the "rusty can of corn" line straight.
Avatar 10:19am Holly in NC:

Apparently PJ Harvey covers 'Zaz Turned Blue' - who knew? Not me, obviously.
  10:21am Travis:

Strange song. Trying to figure out what "Zaz Turned Blue" is all about. Did Zaz start voting Democrat or sumpin'?
Avatar 10:21am Joe McG:

@Holly: Sure would be interesting to hear THAT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am adrian in mpls:

@Holly - really? wow, i need to check that out!

Travis, thanks to horseplay, Zaz got strangled for a little bit.

Avatar 10:34am still b/p:

I read Li'l Abner when I was a kid but didn't get much of the satire it was supposed to carry. I would like to go back and revisit things like Joe Btfsplk and the shmoos just for the hell of it.
Avatar 10:35am Cecile:

Was/Not Was were a real point of pride in Lower Michigan. Their fusion of pop and avant really spoke to a lot of us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am adrian in mpls:

i fully support a flute special. it opens up the possibility of more tull discussion on the wfmu board :)
  10:37am Brendan:

Avatar 10:37am Joe McG:

@adrian: But, adrian, I'm not going to play any Tull! ;)
  10:38am dave from toronto:

Thanks for the hedzup on Zaz, Brendan. I wonder if this is the origin of the old adage, "If they can't take a choke..."
Avatar 10:39am βrian:

So is it flutist or flautist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am DCE:

hey, wanna get low?
Avatar 10:41am Joe McG:

@Brian: Hmm...I'll need to find out for sure before I do a flaute special.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Andrew Waterloo:

@Cecile, the thing about Was (not was) was that I could never fit Dad, I'm in Jail, with Walk the Dinosaur.
Avatar 10:42am Brian in UK:

Swag For Life Member 10:42am 12539:

Fluter, of course.
Avatar 10:43am βrian:

Well, you an always flout the norm. At the least, use an umlaut: flaütist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Andrew Waterloo:

Isn't Fluter the German kid in The Simpsons?
Avatar 10:43am Joe McG:

Avatar 10:43am Brian in UK:

A flutist is a chimney sweep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Parq:

Done with my commute. Wow, "Zaz Turned" really touched a nerve. And rightly so -- it's a favorite of mine too, and my playlist now has a little yellow star that says so. 'Cile, sorry to blaspheme, but I *really* like W(nW)'s third album, especially the expanded version released on CD. That has another crooner, Frank Sinatra Jr., ruminating on "Wedding Vows in Vegas".
Avatar 10:44am Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar 10:44am βrian:

@BrianUK: That looks suspiciously like Le Pétomane's line of work.
Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

@Kurt: You should recognize this one!

This is an intriguing and enlightening setlist/show. Thanks for sharing your record collection Joe.

i should? i wasn't watching the playlist. i didn't know electric guitars made more than one single!
Avatar 10:48am Cecile:

Andrew, we never could either. We just sat there and went "WHUH?"
Avatar 10:49am Cecile:

Oh, the third one is OK, too Parq. But the first two, wow.
Avatar 10:50am Joe McG:

@Kurt: Yeah, it was yours! I think you either gave it to me or I stole it.
Avatar 10:50am Brian in UK:

Is this for Michael?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Andrew Waterloo:

@Cecile, when I think of Papa Was A Rolling Stone I think of their version.
  10:51am will:

I have a version of that Electric Guitars song on a comp called THE BRISTOL RECORDER where they speeded it up and sung in tune!
Avatar 10:52am Kurt Gottschalk:

joe, ha! guess i didn't want it too bad.

i want that electric guitars single, tho. trade you for the buchanan bros?
Avatar 10:53am Kurt Gottschalk:

oooooooooh, wait, you were talking about gayle. that makes more sense. ok, trade you the gayle adams 45 you already have for your electric guitars 7"? done deal.
Avatar 10:53am Joe McG:

@Kurt: Ha ha ha! @will: Cool info, I have to find that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Parq:

'Cile I dig "Tornadoes" the most, but I'm afraid the other one, the one with Mitch Ryder, just doesn't do it for me. "Dog" is way better, IMO. I cheerfully acknowledge your prerogative to disagree. Peace on ya.
Avatar 10:55am βrian:

Joe, are you playing these from a stack? I can almost hear the sweet "plop."
Avatar 10:55am listener mark:

Avatar 11:10am conkrete_dawg:

Thank you, Joe, for this guitar-based rock-and-roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Mike East:

When I heard Mark Stewart was gonna be on the fun machine, I was thinking of the guy from Bang on a Can...which seemed a bit incongruous for that particular show...though this is wfmu, home of the incongruous. The other Mark Stewart makes more sense, though.
Avatar 11:13am Joe McG:

You bet, dawg! @Andrew and Dave: Yes, actually I think I might've played the UK Trooper after all....
