Howdy all! As w/ Bethany earlier this week, nearly ducked under a closing railroad barrier to get here on time. I'll call it late but alive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm listener james from westwood:

Enjoying the trip to the early 90s. Many good things began then for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Amanda:

Good afternoon and good lunch, all!!! James, I am hoping the near-top of my show was worth you almost dying.
Avatar 12:17pm Danne D:

Hey Amanda :) Hey Everyone :)
Finally got a chance to crack open your Zine Amanda :) Very excited to read the rest of it!

Anybody make it to Hula Rock last Saturday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Amanda:

I'm embarrassed -- nay, ashamed! -- to say I did not.

The limbo contest was especially inspiring.

Heaviosity was acheived.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm listener james from westwood:

Good night, Springton! There will be no encore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm listener james from westwood:

Good efflorescence of music in that 89-93 streak. Also liked Londonbeat's big hit.
Avatar 12:36pm Brian in UK:

Goodbye Elaine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm listener james from westwood:

Much of it got put into the "modern rock" category. Mixed feelings on categories, but I was a diehard WDRE lis'ner through this period & heard most of those cuts there first when I was home from college. (WFNX up there for some of this sort of music.)
Avatar 12:37pm Brian in UK:

james all you need is ROCK & POP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm listener james from westwood:

I should go out as such a bon vivant as she did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...only knew 'Civilization' from Diane Cannon on the Muppets - not so many lyrics there, but good visuals if you have a Y-chromosome...seems Ray Davies got 'Apeman' from there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm listener james from westwood:

Here's your Simpsons toilet joke:
"Barney, where's your cummerbund?"
"It fell in the toilet."

afternoon Amanda and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Amanda:

I def didn't love WDRE, but it was everywhere where the college station wouldn't reach. It became a sort of Stockholm Syndrome for me in high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...than there's 'BongoBongo' by ManuChao...a subgenre, perhaps...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

That Argent was cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Amanda:

Are you all familiar with the video from which this screen grab is taken? Please, if not, Google "dog and turtle play soccer."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

I hear ya, Amanda. WDRE was my go-to before WFMU appeared on my radar in Sept 92. And, well, here we are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Uncle Michael:

I think it's hilarious that today's gif *isn't" animated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, yes, have seen this vid. A riot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

Which part to GIF from that vid is a challenging question. It's a target-rich environment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

Paul sings Paul. Paul sings Elvis. Elvis sings Nick. Nick sings...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Uncle Michael:

That turtle is a bully.
Avatar 12:58pm ndbob:

@just watched it - how great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Jeff Golick:

This is the Elvis version, yeah?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Amanda:

Ya
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

Released as a Nick Lowe b-side...without Elvis' name on it, but a picture of Nick with Costello's Jaguar with the custom inlay.

Nick sings Elvis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Jeff Golick:

Hadn't realized it was orig released under NL's name!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Uncle Michael:

Originally a Brinsley Schwarz track. (What's so funny...)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Amanda:

@rf, that is the Vitamin String Quartet. They have done like hundreds of songs and albums in that style... they also do the vers of "When I Come Around" that I use at the beginning of the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm listener james from westwood:

Amanda, WFMU has been my frequent escape from the world's exceptional shittiness of the past couple of weeks. Thanks for making it such a good refuge/recharge point.

Just earlier a friend on Facebook posted a video relating to [insert one of the shitty things here] and asked me and 2 friends to opine. I as much as said, "Nnnnnnope!", unfollowed the conversation, and added the terms to Facebook Purity so I don't have to see them again. /politics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

Facebook Purity?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm listener james from westwood:

@UM, it's a Firefox plug-in that allows you to customize the hell out of FB. Might exist for other browsers, too. You can get rid of ads, sidebar crap, and enter keywords that will screen topics w/ these terms out of your feed so you don't have to hide that person who occasionally sparks firefights w/ discussions of [insert tinderbox here].

Talking about Joe Piscopo > Joe Piscopo.
(Tho props for his Sinatra.)
  1:28pm jay c:

no more chipwich?!! nooooo
  1:29pm Sam:

You can't get chipwiches anymore? Even out in the country in little stores? God I used to love those.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm listener james from westwood:

@Sam: There are ersatz Chipwiches at Trader Joe's; there may be other knockoffs, too.
  1:31pm Sam:

That's James L. Brooks's contribution, he's a master of sentimentality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm listener james from westwood:

Dan Castellanetta makes a hilarious noise for Krusty when he's spitting out the Krustyburger. For a long time I had that as my AOL IM noise.
Swag For Life Member 1:32pm S from I:

According to wikipedia, Chipwitch was a victim of corprate snack consolidation when it was bought by Nestle and shut down so as not to compete with nestles own brand of cookie ice cream sandwich.
  1:32pm Sam:

Does Trader Joe's have healthy organic chipwiches that will make you lose weight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Jeff Golick:

This *just* came across my Twitter feed:

It's a pretty remarkable design.
Avatar 1:33pm Danne D:

I gotta jet out and grab lunch :) Thanks for your usual excellence AmNazz :)
  1:34pm Sean:

Supposedly the Simpsons FX deal will have a streaming service. Just need to find a willing friend in possesion of a password...

http://www.avclub.com/article/fxxs-simpsons-world-will-just-hook-it-your-veins-207163
  1:34pm Sam:

I guess you could make your own chipwiches at home if you have cookies and ice cream. It wouldn't be that hard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Amanda:

Got it, Sean! Way to actually read an article, me.
  1:36pm Sam:

He rhymed sewer and skewer - cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm listener james from westwood:

Good job on completing the essay and getting good reviews from your designated readers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm listener james from westwood:

I'm a wicked 95%er; I'll get nearly done w/ a project and then get an extreme case of the wiggles. I picture Malcolm McDowell in "Clockwork" w/ the eye-things in to help me power thru the last 5%.
  1:50pm jay c:

ill always remember homer and marge riding into the sunset on a bike to this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm listener james from westwood:

"Midnight Cowboy" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" both getting some musical love this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Amanda:

Yeah! "Duffless"!

I'm thinking of Butch and Sundance riding a girl's bike into the sunset. (The studio suppressed that ending.)
