Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm blee:

I once got a small conical snail shell imbedded completely in my big toe, while coming in from surfing on a trip down in Mexico. You have to walk on slippery cobblestones to get back to the beach, snails on the cobbles. Good thing I always keep a small swiss army knife on my keychain!
Avatar 12:53pm KOTJ:

I'm craving the vocal or instrumental version of Grazing in the Grass.

Enjoyed the Old English Surfer, listening here in England. England has got some excellent surfing beaches, like the two at Newquay - oh and also Perranporth. Good mix of tunes anyway!

'Girl Don't Tell Me' always a major fave; read somewhere Brian Wilson wrote it thinking of Lennon singing it - but Lennon not short of tunes just then...

nobody sang it like Brian though.

  1:52pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

I can't believe this is for Scoops instead of.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Gaylord Fields:

GDTM has some weak-ass lyrics that strain to scan with the melody, but both it and the Gants' similarly "Ticket to Ride"-inspired "My Baby Don't Care" do justice to the source!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- astute (naturally!) - but the naivete matches the subject-matter - & that is the melancholy of Summer; I can so hear Lennon's voice in '64 propelling the combo of hurt & anger...
  1:59pm geokopp:

OK so it's not a great beach day out there, but it sure is great in here! Great stuff, Mr O-Phonic!
Avatar 2:00pm d¢ pät:

I'll be on da beach in 2 weeks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Gaylord Fields:

@d¢ pät: It's an understandable mistake, considering that this was only the second solo lead by arguably the Beach Boys' best singer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Mike East:

I leave Saturday, dc pat. Jersey Shore, here I come.
Avatar 2:02pm d¢ pät:

@Gaylord: I'll say, if that's Carl, he's got my vote

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Mike East:

LBI, here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Mike East:

only bad part of the jersey shore is lack of WFMU signal. Though I hope to catch some Jonesy on "The Hawk"...if he's still there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: Good point in that the subject matter, and how Carl delivers it, makes the song magical, despite clunky constructions like "during your ol' schooltime."
Avatar 2:08pm d¢ pät:

I've been there, nice.
  2:09pm geokopp:

I don't think Jones has done that Hawk gig for a couple years now. @Mike East
  2:09pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

@Mike East, do you have a smartphone? Download the free WFMU app and listen anywhere!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Mike East:

dang! (I haven't been down the shore in a couple years, either)
Thanks geokopp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yeah - that woulda failed the Lennon-McCartney filter by a mile...
Avatar 2:11pm d¢ pät:

eh, the FMU app works everywhere.
Avatar 2:13pm d¢ pät:

jeeze, I dunno...McCartney wrote some pretty dumb lyrics himself...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Gaylord Fields:

Also, GDTM emulates the Fab Four further in that the Beach Boys are playing all the instruments (if you don't count their roadie on tambourine), a rarity in 1965.
  2:17pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

Thanks for the HG's!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- oh (to flog this horse back to 1965) - 'I know that she's no peasant' is filler - but they knew it : ) ...all those guys were on a crazy schedule back then: time vs. material...
  2:20pm Woo:

Ernie Anastos turned 71 last Sunday.
Avatar 2:22pm Sean D. Daily:

That cover of Wipeout was... painful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Gaylord Fields:

I'm not at all about how dumb the lyrics are (I'm a big fan of stupidity in lyrics); I'm talking about how they're so lazily constructed they at times don't even fit the song's meter without straining. As simplistic as Beatles lyrics could sometimes be, they pretty much always scanned.
Avatar 2:22pm d¢ pät:

yeah, should have been "pheasant" then would make sense...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Gaylord Fields:

Short version (finally!): "Girl Don't Tell Me" is a filler song that became a king.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Barkevious Shabazz:

It's odd, Todd, but whenever I see Jeremy Affeldt pitch for The Giants, I see Matt Fiveash. It's odd because Matt is WAAAY better than Jeremy. Although Jeremy is OK, too.
