Live performance by Gabriel Kahane
With the release of his "Craigslist Lieder" Gabriel Kahane created the perfect blur between mundane social media and mock artsong. Since then, Kahane has created increasingly gorgeous chamber-pop, showcasing his sweet vocal style, but always finding the beauty and humor in life. Gabe's latest album, "The Ambassador," draws inspiration from "Bruce Willis’ hair, detective fiction, modernist architecture, and race riots... a meditation on the underbelly of Los Angeles." Gabriel Kahane played live on WFMU.

Hi Irene, hello one and all, belated Happy 4th of July to everyone across "The Pond"
Avatar 12:00pm kat330:

Hi, Irene! Schedule opened up today finally in a fortnight.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Really looking forward to the Gabriel Kahane set.
Avatar 12:05pm kat330:

Wow, that piano interior is something else! Looks like "stone crabs" in a literal sense. Hi, Sean!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Hey Kat, did you have a fab celebratory weekend?
Avatar 12:08pm kat330:

[getting off phone with Philo] Yes indeed, thanks! Cannot remember a 4th weekend with weather more ideal than we had -- THurs. - today still (although temps are creeping up to 90 F again today)
Avatar 12:11pm kat330:

Do you Brits celebrate any specific day as your Independence Day? I know about Guy Fawkes, but wonder if some other? Magna Carta Day? ;)
  12:14pm SuW Guru:

the shortest way between your house and the fun spot is not always coincident with the link between an ice cream truck and some semen monk wrestling event
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, we should follow your lead and have some kind of "day", our Patron saint is celebrated on April 23rd, no National Holiday, diddly squat really,
  12:16pm KP:

Happy Summer, Irene
Avatar 12:17pm kat330:

@Sean: Perhaps it only goes to show that NO one (excl. the HRE) puts England in shackles (or a corner). Otherwise though, I thought you folks have plenty of "bank holidays."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm common:

good stuff today, irene!
Avatar 12:21pm kat330:

Yes, Nyro and Nilsson -- niiiiice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Everybody! Just getting set up for a live performance wiht Gabriel Kahane. Glad you're enjoying the music!
Avatar 12:26pm kat330:

If this is the new mic causing troubles for many, it certainly sounds *great* on you, I.
  12:27pm SuW Guru:

its easy and lame to be found for gossip when we're so lovely installed in our nest of confident comfort that we trust all the branches blindly to be looking down and tickle or taunt the creatures souls that pass.. ovulation focused minds might tend to disrupt organs in some royal fainted bird y queens
Avatar 12:28pm Van in DC:

Can't listen live today but wanted to type hello Irene. Oh, hey, for DC'ers, Marissa Nadler live in DC tomorrow! Yay!

√ for the info.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Sean in Bristol UK:

I get the Soundcheck Podcast, really looking forward to hearing Juana on that show.

A fab track from a corker of an album, Elysian Fields rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Mike East:

I'm intimidated by how cool Elysian Fields are.
Avatar 12:52pm Cheri Pi:

This EF is making me feel "stoned"
Avatar 12:56pm kat330:

Love the cello... for a wonderful ambient sound this reminds me of Tetaz soundtrack for "Rogue." www.youtube.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm YETI BOB:

this esmerine track is really nice
Avatar 1:01pm kat330:

Si. "La Lechuza" translates as "The Owl."
  1:04pm LJC:

Esmerine - reminiscent of Steve Tibbetts and Miracle Room.
Avatar 1:08pm kat330:

Street names where I lived in L.A.: Whitley, Tamarind, Morse, Morrison and Denny Aves.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, what is LA like, have only been though LAX but it is on my radar as the ballparks are on my 'still to visit' list.
Avatar 1:11pm kat330:

Whoa! -- in its surrounding context, wild!
Avatar 1:15pm kat330:

@Sean: Not enough time or "paper" for that! ;) Arriving in November from Boston, it was supernally magical at the get-go. Some aspects remained so -- like going from playing in the snow up in the mountains to playing in the surf all in an hour's drive. Traffic headaches are not exaggerated, and there are plenty of other demerits, but all-in-all, I sure preferred it over to Chicago. (where I moved to afterwards)

@Sean: Oh, and if my mother had had *her* way after WWII and remained in L.A., where she awaited my dad's return from the S. Pacific, I would have been born there. She *loved* the L.A. of the '40s.

Omg is this guy behind A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant?
Avatar 1:29pm kat330:

Really enjoyed that "Villains" track. I'm hearing a lot of lyrics about swindles and selfishness -- no lack of it in LA to be sure -- but I encountered so much more of that in Chicago and continuing on down here to my hometown, from the "upright Christian" community especially.
Avatar 1:30pm kat330:

Gabriel's path doesn't sound all the far off from Randy Newman's.
Avatar 1:31pm kat330:

Musso & Frank's! Iconic martinis.
  1:35pm willem:

Hi guys, listening all the way in The Netherlands, Europe. Just looked up the building on the corner of Third and 3rd in Brooklyn. That's a pretty lonely looking house.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Willem, rooting for your boys against Argentina
Avatar 1:40pm kat330:

There's a symmetry to the WC finals, with two adjacent European countries facing two adjacent S. American countries, n'est-ce pas?
Avatar 1:41pm t_J:

nice photos Irene thanks for the share
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Sean in Bristol UK:

This set from Gabriel is a joyous affair, please come over to the UK.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Sean in Bristol UK:

The perfect final, Brazil-Netherlands
  1:45pm willem:

Thanks Sean!
  1:50pm willem:

Yes Sean, I've been urging him to do the same for The Netherlands.
Avatar 1:52pm kat330:

I was in LA after and gone before a lot of these memorable events Kahane has chronicled. [Nov '77 through Jan '89 was my stint]
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Willem, we need to get a wetsuit for Arjen Robben!!
  1:55pm willem:

What a nice set this was from Gabriel. Thank you.
Avatar 1:56pm kat330:

Yes, thank you Gabriel, and thank you, Irene for making it so.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Thank you, Gabriel, a wonderful set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Irene Trudel:

Glad you all liked the live set! I've been a fan of Gabe's for a number of years now and am so glad we were able to make this happen.
  2:07pm willem:

Thank you very much, Irene. I too have been following his work since his first album. Underberg still makes me cry whenever I listen to it. That building in Brooklyn you mentioned sort of reminds me of that song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Irene Trudel:

You're right about Underberg, willem. Sadly beautiful. Thanks for mentioning there's a picture of taht building in Gowanus. For many years it stood alone on that corner, saved I think by landmark status. www.flickr.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm dale:

loved the live set irene. on an aside, how is the radio station up in roxbury? is it all farm reports and npr or worth seeking out?
Avatar 2:15pm kat330:

@Irene: Noted you corrected the typo on Ghost -- maybe the one on "Villians", too? :)

Speaking of gardens, ours just produced its first sunflower bloom today, yay.
  2:18pm teegj:

I just tuned in at Cuddle Magic and I'm still listening. I can't wait to go back and listen to the whole show.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Sean in Bristol UK:

You can't beat a bit of slide guitar,
  2:27pm willem:

Admittedly, I was here for Gabriel. But it's a nice setlist (love Laura Nyro), so I'm adding your station to my streaming radio folder. It's 20:25 here now and I still need to make some dinner, so bye for now.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Willem, another member of the expanding Trukeepers family, groovy.
Avatar 2:31pm slugluv1313:

beautiful beautiful show, Irene! and INSPIRING, too! :)
i think it was Gabriel's set, gave me that extra OOMPH! to dig out my old guitar -- she needs to be cleaned up and re-strung, but still okay after all these years
and WELCOME, willem, to the joys of WFMU!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Irene Trudel:

@dale, WIOX has its highs and lows. As with any station there will be some things good and some bad. I think a few of the evening shows are pretty good. Tuesday at 10pm my friend John Savory does a great freeform-ish show www.wioxradio.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Santos L Halper:

Killing it today Irene; thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks so much @slugluv!
  2:37pm dale:

thanks for the link - i'll give a listen
Avatar 2:38pm kat330:

@slugluv: Good on ya! My guitar has weathered 46 years moving all around the country with me. Needed a new bridge a couple of years ago, but otherwise in great shape.
  2:39pm tomp:

what was the name of the documentary that you discussed earlier depicting an account of how LA has portrayed itself historically through cinema?
  2:41pm tomp:

ie- the villainy of the modern?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Irene Trudel:

@tomp, I'm going to have to go back and listen to what Gabe told me. I'll post it on the playlist comments after I'm off the air.
  2:45pm tomp:

thank you Irene:)
Avatar 2:45pm slugluv1313:

aww, THANK YOU kat330 and Irene! :)

brilliant set today btw!

Ohh ... "More Than This" I think it is!

Avatar 2:56pm kat330:

This set is simply superb, Irene. Thanks for this whole afternoon!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Again a show of beautiful diverse music, thank you to Gabriel for coming in and sharing his music and as always thank you, Irene for you do each and every week. Thank goodness I am in a time zone where I can get to hear you live.
Avatar 10:43am Van in DC:

Tarifa! What a FANTASTIC song and album (Are We There)!!

To me, the final lyrics of this song are quite an excellent summary of the entire album: To Figure It Out. Which is what I think this entire album is about...Sharon trying to figure out the balance of life, etc. with being an artist. And a touring artist at that.

Tarifa was a welcome Time Out for her but I think it really brought home to her the struggle of, well, figuring it out.
