You're late, Dave!
Avatar 10:03pm Dave Mandl:

Sorry! Good evening, all!
  10:03pm P-90:

Hello World ! ( of Echo)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm pacific standard simon:

Now THAT'S a drumroll, Dave!
Avatar 10:05pm Dave Mandl:

I can't take credit for it. I can't play a drumroll.
Avatar 10:05pm JakeGould:

Give the drummer some oxygen, please.
Avatar 10:05pm Droll:

With all due respect, I think Steve Smith does the smoothest drum roll. Seamless single to double stroke changeover. Absolute stick control. Even sounds the same one handed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm pacific standard simon:

I thought it was like a fanfare for yourself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm pacific standard simon:

Game's over, by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

... Daves ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm pacific standard simon:

Why does this song sound like a King Crimson cover?
  10:08pm P-90:

Dont forget Bill Bruford's bee-utiful snare drum tone and rolls
Avatar 10:09pm JakeGould:

Yup, game over! www.youtube.com...
  10:09pm P-90:

@ pss: we were sorta going in the same direction there sorta
Avatar 10:10pm Droll:

[franticly solving equations] I don't think measure 37 should have been 13/8 if measure 43 is going to be 5/4. At least the band sounds reasonably rehearsed.
  10:11pm P-90:

@ Droll: Xactly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm pacific standard simon:

Uh-huh, Jake, that clip pretty much sums up what Kaepernick's going to be saying to himself in the off season.

Seems that way, p-90.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm davex:

Hi Dave(s) and others...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm pacific standard simon:

Whenever I hear this song, I hear the Jon Hendricks vocal version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- for Bud Powell - like Bird w/ a left hand on the keyboard - beaten by racist cops & braindamaged, I believe ??...
Avatar 10:15pm Mayuko:

Good evening. Happy to listen to Thelonious Monk's Piano now for the first time in a long time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- true pss - but more Monk listening will help...
Avatar 10:18pm Dave Mandl:

Evening, @Mayuko, @DLBRRN63, @pss, @davex, @P-90, @Droll, @Jake, @12539.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm pacific standard simon:

Have you designed any jazz CD covers, Mayuko?
Avatar 10:26pm Mayuko:

I'm actually not familiar to Jazz at all, Simon - But I used to listen to Thelonious Monk a lot. I liked that it sounded to me like an alert sound from a broken railroad crossing or something (although I don't know what it sounds like in the US... was thinking about the ones in Tokyo)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm pacific standard simon:

Fair enough. The style of your cut paper illustrations would be appropriate for be-bop jazz, such as Monk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm pacific standard simon:

I was delighted to discover that I share a birthday with Durutti.
Avatar 10:35pm Dave Mandl:

...I've made the comparison of Monk to Syd Barrett, of all people - in that they were individuals who had non-standard nervous systems & personalities - & who from their unique views introduced novel structures in music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Residents reminds me of Beefheart somehow - & I was reading his wiki page about how crazy & mean to his band *he* often was...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm pacific standard simon:

I'd be surprised to find any significant similarities -- they seem like very different people.
Avatar 10:45pm Droll:

Define "Standard".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- yeah - not to overstate it - just that they were people who saw things in unique ways (& behaved in unique ways...) & I think gave us a glimpse into another place thru their musics & writing & playing - & this had an effect on their respective genres...
  10:50pm P-90:

Good Evening Ms. Maruko. Your designs are very beautiful, I agree that your style would be very appropriate for some types of Jazz.
Avatar 10:50pm Droll:

Hylozoism is the philosophical point of view that all matter (including the universe as a whole) is in some sense alive.
Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm pacific standard simon:

Define "alive".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...matter = energy = information = consciousness...it's an interesting point of view some have...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm pacific standard simon:

On the other hand, my copy of Beefheart's original Clear Spot tore itself apart every time it came out of my record shelves. For that matter, so did the die-cut Mirror Man.
Avatar 10:56pm earrie:

alive -- possessing life; opposite of dead.

The state that follows birth and precedes death. The state of being alive and living.
  10:57pm P-90:

Uh- oh, here we go...
Define "tricky territory"
Avatar 10:58pm earrie:

-(biology) A status given to any entity including animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, etc. — and sometimes viruses — having the properties of replication and metabolism.
-intrinsically messy.
Swag For Life Member 10:58pm 12539:

Let's just cut to the chase and define "define."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm David L.B. is RRN63:

de - fine: literally to 'make finite'
  11:00pm P-90:

@12etc.: haha! Now we're getting somewhere
Avatar 11:00pm Mayuko:

Thank you, P-90!! I hope some jazz musicians with a bit weird nervous systems driven by some fungi in their brain will ask me to do covers for them.
Avatar 11:03pm Droll:

Not my definition -- use Wikipedia to define "define". It's turtles all the way down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm pacific standard simon:

"properties of replication and metabolism" -- now it gets interesting. If you've had yourself sterilized, do you still have the property of replication? Or is that nit-picking? And does a sun have a metabolism? I tend to think so.
Avatar 11:03pm earrie:

The mean calculator calculated the mean of meanings for several average definitions. It was a meaningless endeavour.
Avatar 11:08pm Droll:

If this was a prized LP in DM's childhood household, I regret not having grown up there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- if you're sterilized & still alive, your cells are still replicating w/in you (you are still growing - & constantly dying as well!)
...It *is* turtles all the way down - because things are not really finite - they are infinite: defining - making finite - giving something boundaries or an end (a fine) - is sort-of arbitrary, but agreed upon to have terms for thought & therefore speech. Games are all about Rules - & agreeing on them to Play. In Philosophical discussions - the 1st thing you always have to do is define terms to see if you're even talking about the same thing(s) 1st. What is 'Alive' & what is Not is deffo wunna the big ones !...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm pacific standard simon:

May I just interject a statement that I find this shortening of Dave Mandl's show extremely annoying, and clearly a sign of the end times?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Droll, yah I think the prize LP in my household was at best The Travelling Wilbury's Volume 2 followed by the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm pacific standard simon:

And... well said (sort of) Rabbit.
  11:11pm P-90:

@Mayuko: Sumimasen! I misspelled your name.
I think there are a lot of Jazz musicians who listen to WFMU. Perhaps some of the will have enough fungus in their non-standard brains to notice the quality of your work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm David L.B. is RRN63:

@Droll: You won that round with "turtles all the way down"
  11:15pm tom:

wonder if this was written on piano first then transcribed for brass, or just written for brass in the first place.

Avatar 11:25pm Droll:

pss, This *IS* the end-times: Mandl can fit in more brass than Bethany per show, and his show is only 2 hours, and he wastes 2% on rock, and another 3-5% on dead air before going on mic... It's all wrong.

@ RevRab: right again, Robin!
Now, did you know that off the top or did you search it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Ike:

The enthusiasm is great, but is decent spelling and grammar too much to ask? I already had a mysterious migraine earlier today. If it comes back, it'll be because I tried to comprehend your comments, @!.!.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- doesn't everybody know that one ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm Andrew Waterloo:

@RRN63 the real question is, what is the sex of the turtle and will it mate with other turtles with world supporting discs on their back? Also, does the turtle continue to exist if nobody believes in it?
Avatar 11:28pm earrie:

3hr>2hr was kindness on Dave's part, no? Giving up an hour to allow for the great Sunday schedule shuffle for this particular season.

Avatar 11:32pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, folks. The move to a two-hour show wasn't my choice, it was just a reshuffling of the grid by Ken. But I'm fine with it. It's like a vacation without actually taking a vacation.

Avatar 11:35pm Dave Mandl:

@!.!: I'm a copyeditor, but we're very inclusive here. All kinds of grammar/spelling/punctuation welcome.
Avatar 11:36pm Droll:

Yes, It's like vacating the hour of 9-10pm. The worst part is I like having Blumin's show back and it's a good bridge to WoE. They should both be 3 hours. And, of course, Bethany needs 3 hours because the music is long-form.
  11:36pm P-90:

OMG you were correct too...
I forgot, it WAS in response to a lecture on astronomy by Russel that the lady said: That was bullshit, Earth is resting on a flat plate, that rests on the backs of four huge elephants, that stand on the back of a giant turtle.
Russel: then what is the turtle standing on?
Lady: another giant turtle.
Russel: and what is HE standing on?
Lady: Oh, you can't fool me, silly! It's turtles all the way down!

If Watts had lived to see Pilates, he would have been speechless.

Ken will eventually force me to donate all my moneys to World of Echo -- This is part of his plan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Bethany does an amazing job in *one hour*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm Andrew Waterloo:

It would actually be nice we had an A440 type alternate stream.
  11:41pm !.!:

i do 30min
Avatar 11:42pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: That is *the* plan, definitely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm pacific standard simon:

I think that all DJs that I like should migrate to the Give The Drummer Radio stream, but that's just my perfect world plan.
Swag For Life Member 11:43pm 12539:

Is this set's theme, Unpronounceable Names?
  11:44pm P-90:

@Dave: by my math, you should now be guarenteeing "less than 3% R&R". Wait, let me check that again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Andrew Waterloo:

@PSS, then how do we use GTD to get away from certain mother stream DJs?
Avatar 11:47pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Yeah, this will be kind of a tough set to pronounce.
Avatar 11:47pm Droll:

12539, To the contrary, Mandl loves a good plosive and sibilant to emphasize and repeat. He probably stands behind a shower curtain so he doesn't drench the mic.
Avatar 11:48pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I like affricates, to tell you the truth. Funny, I was just talking to someone about phonetics earlier this evening.
Swag For Life Member 11:48pm 12539:

@Droll, that's what happens when you grow up missing an "e" in your name.
  11:49pm P-90:

@RevvedRab: That WAS.paricularly prescient. But I think his career and his taste for vodka were two distinct things
Avatar 11:49pm Dave Mandl:

Affricate = "a stop + a homorganic fricative." I remember that from linguistics class.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm pacific standard simon:

This is the "coughing up a hairball" set. My cat has pronounced the names many times in the early hours of the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...what ,y impression has been that they say (his bio. - 'Genuine Fake') is that Watts had to earn money for his family trotting out the same stuff on lecture tours - & the pressure lead him to drink...but it's also true that in Zen there are *Drunken* Saints...
  11:52pm P-90:

Remember George Carlin's phonetic description of a fart as an example of a "bi-labial fricative"?
Avatar 11:56pm Dave Mandl:

Yeah, bilabial fricative. My first phonetics lesson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Carlin was so much more than just another stand-up comedian (as hard as that is)...
Swag For Life Member 11:57pm 12539:

Thanks, Mr Mandl.
Avatar 11:58pm Droll:

Carlin liked language -- 7-Words skit is also his.

Thanks for the dinner music, DM. The missing hour is painfully obvious some weeks.
Avatar 11:58pm earrie:

Carlin knew why kids like me didn't like 'squaaaash'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm pacific standard simon:

If there were more time, I would task you with finding a copy of Vivian Stanshall's "Labial-Dental Fricative" in the record library.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...I fffffff(splat)rikkin' love this program.

Rev, I think he was drinking heavily long before ennui set in about delivering the same message(s) over and over. And he knew how inportant the message was, and he was happy to be ABLE to make a living at it, instead of having to do something that wasn't true to his nature. And all dat shit...
