Options Brian Turner: Playlist from January 7, 2014 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Lee Ranaldo and The Dust  Live in the WFMU Studio   Options Engineered by Ernie Indradat    Sonic Youth guitarist/co-founder returns to Brian's show for a live session amidst a busy year of world travels, and making his latest Matador Records release Last Night On Earth. Since last visit, Lee's live sets and recordings have definitely taken on a dynamic of a more developed band relationship; players Steve Shelley on drums, Tim Luntzel on bass, and second guitarist Alan Licht still explore expansive electric jams, but also have worked to frame Lee's songcraft and lyrical poeticism into even sharper realms. Lee and the Dust headline at the Bell House in Brooklyn January 11th, with Steve Gunn and Spectre Folk also on the bill. Set list today: Revolution Blues (Neil Young cover) / Late Descent #2 / Last Night On Earth / Everybody's Been Burned (D. Crosby cover) / Home Chds / Key/Hole / The Rising Tide / Blackt Out / She Cracked (Modern Lovers cover)    1:34:47 (Pop‑up)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm DCE:

Lee has nice hair, he don't need a hat!
Avatar 3:15pm Lopez:

Northern Haze was one of my most satisfying purchases of last year. The liner note pics of the band in some Arctic Circle rec room really sets the tone!
Avatar 3:23pm Lopez:

I see definite proof of this brutal weather in the playlist so far
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm common:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm fred:

Avatar 3:35pm Jherweg:

It's not the cold so much it's the bloody itchiness of winter that drives men insane....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm DCE:

@ RRNov63, that warm water will become cool water within 2 minutes, and then will freeze shortly thereafter
Avatar 3:48pm glenn:

my least favourite kinks song, for good reason.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Death Grips are different from grippy pads that Do or DIY mentioned last night?

Wow, Extradition, nice.
Avatar 4:12pm Mr. Lowry:

Hey Lee and Brian, always been a Fan. Went to the cologne Concert in November. Hello to Steve, we talked a bit... Nice Set until now !!
  4:57pm tom:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Guido (Cologne):

Had listened to "Last Night On Earth" over and over.

The Night of the Cologne Show last autumn was somewhat special.
The city was covered in a cloud of very fine drizzle (not the average fog).
Crossing the Rhine on my bike for the show, I looked back and found the city completely disappeared, Like the outer space started directly unter the bridge. Somehow fits the "Last Night On Earth" motiv.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Patrick:

amazing set! really digging this stuff!
  5:13pm g Mac-Oxnard:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm herb.nyc:

ooh, good band. i wish newbies LEE and THE DUST good luck in the music world. sorry, bad joke. (i went to suny-binghamton the same time as lee did. and he was in bands then but i was too nerdy to know about rock. alas. oh, alan licht's "emotional martha quinn" book is a great read.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Mike East:

Yes, Cliff. Try restarting it. Also, make sure your speakers are on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Guido (Cologne):

Web stream works (pop-up)
Avatar 5:29pm Brian Turner:

Which stream are you on Cliff?
  5:31pm Cliff:

The mp3 stream....I restarted it a few times and now it's working, go figure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Mike East:

You see, I do this for a living :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Stevel:

"She Cracked" cover giving me chills (or is it still under zero outside?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My son's laptop was churning its disk drive the other day and I fixed it by running "chkdsk -r" and rebooting. It was at 27% for hours, but has worked OK since the reboot.
  5:37pm Cliff:

Yeah, I used to do tech support myself, so I know all about figuring out polite ways to ask "is it plugged in?" ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Guido (Cologne):

Great set!
Thank you!
