Evening, amigos.
Avatar 9:04pm JakeGould:

Hola! Monday tomorrow. Nice day now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Bob Brainen played some Chico Hamilton yesterday. www.wfmu.org...
Swag For Life Member 9:06pm 12539:

Dave, I'm concerned that the new schedule means you'll be starting even after the final stretch has begun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- tasty Chico Hamilton tribute - *&* follows Monica's adieu ftrg Chat Atkins & Lionel Hampton & things real good...deserves a BennyHill pat on the head, I do believe...
Avatar 9:07pm Dave Mandl:

Ken: Well, Mr. Hamilton died last week...
Avatar 9:08pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Hmmm, you may be right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Chat Atkins - great C&W monologuist...
Avatar 9:11pm Droll:

I also have questions about how the schedule change effects WoE. For instance, is the amount of rock constant by percent or elapsed time? Is the show still 2% rock, or now 3%?

By far, best part of the new schedule is A440 is back!
Avatar 9:12pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I'm still working on those figures. Can I get back to you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Thx Droll: there *is* a bright side...
Avatar 9:14pm Richard from Venezuela:

Good post rock track by Six Parts Seven
Avatar 9:15pm Richard from Venezuela:

This is a great new release by a good venezuelan post rock band called Dias de Septiembre: diasdeseptiembre.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 9:18pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, RfV, I'll check them out. I don't *think* I've heard them.
Avatar 9:19pm Richard from Venezuela:

It's good and legal free :)
Avatar 9:22pm deanland:

Well now we'll have to adjust to the segue from "Not Monica" to WOE as of next Sunday.
Avatar 9:22pm Droll:

Take your time on that one, but I need the answer before the Final Stretch. I don't suppose you've worked out if the number of echoes (feedback) is being reduced by 1/3rd or if the delay time is being decreased holding the number of echoes constant?

We have to make a lot of accommodations on our end, you know.
Avatar 9:23pm duke:

This claire hammel things is great
Avatar 9:26pm JakeGould:

Same. Great. Claire.
  9:26pm RUBY:

I'm in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm fleep:

Mentally selecting for two hours instead of three will take some adjustment. Have to cull the herd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm pacific standard simon:

I remember April -- lovely girl, and a helluva good sport!
Avatar 9:34pm Dave Mandl:

Greetings, everyone, btw. Too many of you to name, which is a nice problem to have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm pacific standard simon:

If you're keeping track, Kim Fowley does NOT count against the 2% rock and roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm fleep:

[applies eraser to scorecard] Got it.
Avatar 9:42pm JakeGould:

Man, do I hate Kim Fowley. Screw that guy.
Avatar 9:43pm Dave Mandl:

He was exploitation personified.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...since had 'Alley Oop' record by Kim Fowley when very small - it's an odd sort of full circle (if not a screw)...perhaps not much has changed!...
Avatar 9:44pm JakeGould:

He looks like a psycho. Just forget about anything he’s done. He looks crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...he's what nine feet tall or something? - painted half silver - lives in L.A. ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm pacific standard simon:

The new schedule broke my heart.
Avatar 9:53pm Droll:

pss, I know, only 1 hour for Bethany, but let's just be happy she's back.

Daniel before Dave is cool, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm pacific standard simon:

Nope, I was a born-again Monica fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Tome:

..holds up lighter !! "high" !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...when visiting friend in San Fran. - just something about sitting on his stoop there made me wish I was Jorma w/ his acoustic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm pacific standard simon:

If you were in SF, you probably wouldn't want to be Jorma sitting on a stoop. His ex-wife (the one who painted the cover of this album) was a notorious Mission District drug abuser who eventually managed to die of it, a few years ago.
Avatar 10:02pm Dave Mandl:

I was a big J. Airplane fan when I was a kid, but Hot Tuna fan too. Sorry to hear about his wife. I didn't know that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- oh - there is that sort of fog over the bay...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm pacific standard simon:

Me too, Dave. Always thought of Amon Duul II as the Jefferson Airplane of Germany, and X as the PUNK Jefferson Airplane.
Avatar 10:07pm Droll:

pss, Then what is X's "We Built This City?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm pacific standard simon:

I stopped buying their albums by then. Maybe that god-awful cover of "Wild Thing"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm pacific standard simon:

I do know that Live At The Whisky is their 30 Seconds Over Winterland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- amusing, as X is usually associated w/ The Doors like that; if there was a Punk Airplane - I'd like to think Jack Casady woulda been in it anyway!...
Avatar 10:15pm JakeGould:

I appreciate X the same way I appreciate the Replacements: Neither ban’s music does anything for me, but I am repeatedly lectured on their relevance. Which means… I don’t care. Maybe if I grew up in L.A. or Minnesota when each respective band was big… But don’t care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- wull - X was in there early enuff, pretty original - great poetry & energy (lecture lecture)...Replacements a kinda Punk Stones or Faces mebee (??) - just great R'n'R panache, which is needed from time to time...now, Husker Du...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Flesheaters from L.A. ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm pacific standard simon:

Jack had some "new wave" cred, with SVT. And we used to bump into Paul Kantner at The Mabuhay in North Beach -- he was quite interested in The Nuns, who were also sort of Airplane-like in their lineup, if not their music.
Avatar 10:20pm JakeGould:

Husker Du I can get. But I don’t. I grew up weird. I do appreciate Greg Norton’s mustache. Holy crap. Good facial hair.
  10:21pm KP:

Kim Fowley co-wrote the Byrds' Citizen Kane and for that he is forever aces.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Tome:

I'm waiting for the "Blind Faith" Box Set myself actually..
Avatar 10:26pm Droll:

Completists are the only ones left _buying_ music, thus massive box sets. The upside of a Yes box set is.... uh....
Avatar 10:26pm JakeGould:

I want a Roger Dean box set. Just a huge box set of Roger Dean album covers. Maybe on big 12x12 pieces of wood to mimic an album’s dimensions. No words even. Just images. A box set I can place on a shelf or literally mount on a wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm pacific standard simon:

I can't imagine liking Herbie Hancock enough to own more than a record or two. And I don't get the "relevance" (or significance) thing that Jake mentions, aside from The Beatles and like that. Either you like a band or you don't, and everybody should get off your back.
Avatar 10:28pm JakeGould:

Pacific Standard, you mean how people have thrown the Replacements & X down my throat as dogma? I don’t get it either. Don’t accept it either. Just listen to the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm pacific standard simon:

Actually, I listen to the music all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- wull - there is real 'history' - but a band can be 'relevant' like that - & just not to your tastes. Very little tastes good when shoved down your throat...
Avatar 10:30pm Droll:

Jake, Coffee table LP-porn: www.amazon.com...
Avatar 10:32pm JakeGould:

Droll, I know of those books. But I am talking about a literal crate of 12x12 wood. Each adorned with Roger Dean album art. Not Hipgnosis (like some of their stuff, but a lot of it is bad (i.e.: Black Sabbath covers), but Roger Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm pacific standard simon:

I need a coffee table book of coffee tables. And a coffee table to put it on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- a Boxed Set is a kind of piece of furniture...I always thot a coffetable book of Great Covers on Bad Albums would be both Art & a practical Guide...
Avatar 10:35pm JakeGould:

I drink tea. No coffee table for me.
Swag For Life Member 10:36pm 12539:

Official Roger Dean Mini Box Sets:
Avatar 10:37pm JakeGould:

Forget. No albums. No words. No CDs. Just Roger Dean art. 12x12 on wood.
  10:38pm Bar:

comparing, clash is better then x, sorry, btw nice melodica dub Dave
  10:40pm HollyT:

Hi Dave, Droll, pss, David LB, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- cheese & chalk of a comparison - tho' always felt The Clash was better (stoned?) poetry than people think (always considered in Political terms), & X a notable high-energy Live band...
  10:41pm HollyT:

This song is reminding me that I haven't practiced my accordion in like 3 weeks.
Avatar 10:41pm Dave Mandl:

Hey, Holly.
Avatar 10:41pm Droll:

Jake, Many of those albums were gatefolds, so you probably mean 24x12. And you probably need both inside and outside, so two 24x12 per release... It's a lot of wall space, but would be a trip to stare at -- I get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm pacific standard simon:

Hiyo, Holly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Ken From Hyde Park:

One of the things on my list...learn the accordion.
Avatar 10:42pm JakeGould:

Droll. Indeed!
  10:43pm Bar:

Avatar 10:43pm Dave Mandl:

Holly: A.P. Would have recorded five records in that time.

  10:44pm Bar:

  10:45pm HollyT:

Thanks for rubbing it in, D!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...it's a good point JG: that 12/24 x 12 Art is what's not being represented anymore...much as I got 7,000 some-odd Wallpapers appearing randomly on this Mac...

Avatar 10:57pm Dave Mandl:

  11:15pm Bar:

  11:17pm Bar:

It's easy to review Goddard movies today.
  11:18pm Bar:

Back in the day, he had read bad things about his movies i'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm David L.B. is RRN63:

1966. Myself - I think Revolver's as good a candidate for BestAlbumEver as any. You'd think Artists would vibe great w/ each other (ever intro'd any to each other?) - but if you think about it - they're opinionated enuff about doing it their own way & not the other guy's or they wouldn't be bothered. Mojo Magazine had a 'Revolver Reloaded' cover CD of Revolver that was very good I thot...
  11:21pm Bar:

joanna newsom style? Dave...

Avatar 11:36pm JakeGould:

More apt article. “BuzzFeed will do book reviews, Fitzgerald said, but he hasn’t figured out yet what form they’ll take. It won’t do negative reviews: “Why waste breath talking smack about something?”” www.poynter.org...

Avatar 11:39pm Droll:

[shuddering in horror - I had no idea]
If just having "Like" is good enough for Facebook, I should like it enough for everything else, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...there's all kinds of Writing just like there's all kinds of Music or whatever...reviews bug me when they trash something in a Genre the reviewer doesn't even like to begin w/ & ergo prob. doesn't understand (like Sinatra saying R'n'R is bad Swing: & your point is??) - altho' it may be legit to critique a whole Genre (say, teenpop) in a broad sense...
- You mean - if they don't like it, they're just not publishing a review @ all? I can see that as a reasonable style choice...
  11:40pm Bar:

It's big. It has everything. Hard to say in one word. We don't have newports or mountain dew.
Avatar 11:41pm JakeGould:

Droll, in someways we are living in a very open yet closed media world. Also the logic of people who say that BuzzFeed needs to be positive to assure affiliate ad clicks is nuts. I work in web tech. I assure you the tone of the review & ad clicks have little correlation.
Avatar 11:41pm Dave Mandl:

@Bar: That's got to be a plus.
Avatar 11:41pm JakeGould:

ABar, you mean Newports as in cigarettes or Mountain Dew the drink? You are doing fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm David L.B. is RRN63:

I can drink orange juice, espresso, Monster drinks - for some reason my stomach will just not accept MountainDew.
Avatar 11:43pm JakeGould:

Bar, in the U.S. the sodas are so filled with high fructose corn syrup they are barely like what people grew up with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Andrew Waterloo:

I don't have a problem with negative reviews when they're written well. I have problem with any review that invents a model for a piece and then knocks it for not fitting that model the way the reviewer decided it should.
  11:44pm Bar:

You all got it right, i guess..
  11:45pm Bar:

I don't do any of that, i just could formulate anything complex than that.
Swag For Life Member 11:45pm 12539:

I'm going to miss this 3rd hour in future weeks.
  11:45pm Bar:

couldn't* more*
Avatar 11:45pm JakeGould:

My attitude towards reviews are I skim them. We live in a modern media age where I can just click to read an excerpt or listen to a clip. So the world of reviews is not the same as it once was. Or blah, blah, blah… Listen to WFMU. I like something. I buy it on my iPhone. That is 2013 to me.
  11:46pm Bar:

Imagine in the 60's among few writing media....
  11:47pm Bar:

Writing as in pressing media
Avatar 11:47pm Droll:

12359, Don't worry, Dave's going to drop the first hour which is always a snoozer anyhow. We'll still get the second two hours of flute solos and 7/8 time that we came for.
  11:48pm Bar:

You couldn't spare words, like today. I don't know whats best actually..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- that's true I think: the triangulation of Artist-Critic-Audience has changed from when everyone spent so much time worrying about it - but I could be wrong...I often say FMU brings me the Audio of stuff I only used to read about...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm Andrew Waterloo:

Reviews are good for giving a release context. I usually read reviews after I've heard the album several times.
Avatar 11:49pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I thought the second hour was the snoozer.
Avatar 11:50pm JakeGould:

Reviews are more like critical documentation on the positive side nowadays. On the negative/cynical side nowadays, I see reviews as simply search engine fodder nowadays. There is so much noise out there. People just want to grab Google hits to get clicks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- much more stuff faster & more sensationalistic for immediate consumption...that's my critique...more explosions & gunfire...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm pacific standard simon:

When I have to work on Sunday, I miss the first half hour anyway. Now I won't.
Avatar 11:53pm Droll:

Maybe the solution to crappy consumer reviews is to go back to professional music criticism.
Avatar 11:54pm JakeGould:

It’s a contrast to when I would take the subway to Tower Records on 3rd & Broadway to get Pulse. And would read “Desert Island Discs” to get clues to cool stuff. Now I can’t stand lists… The Interwebs is just lists!
  11:55pm Bar:

Same here when there was Bizz Magazine.
Swag For Life Member 11:57pm 12539:

Thanks, DaveM! Good luck catching your train.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm David L.B. is RRN63:

..it's like Todd Rundgren, I think, observing that putting the production tools in everyone's hands would *not* make everyone a skilled engineer; Writing well about Music is kinda hard ! Most people can't tell you why they like it or don't *@ all*. Very many are hacks. It's notorious that people review things they don't even listen to, watch, read...
