Options Brian Turner: Playlist from November 19, 2013 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Hello. Can I donate a broken down old truck to WFMU? 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 with a blown head gasket, messy front end and a wonky transmission. If somebody could let me know at dan at crateshop dot com, that'd be great.

new front tires. I wouldn't mind holding on to those if possible.

Hail animated avatars CP!
You look happy as a Monster in cookies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...@ this scale, we might see the large cookie as a pie, & Ernie's reddish head as a cherry...so we add Movement to Scale now...

Ken's gonna have to work overtime in the Gif factory to keep this comment board satisfied.

crateslinger, you may absolutely donate your car to WFMU! Just call up the Center For Car Donations at 855-WFMU-CAR and tell them you want your car to go to WFMU. They'll arrange for pick-up or towing, and we'll get the proceeds.

@RR: Scale of 1/cherry = cookie/π
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Matt from Springfield:

@CP: On the other hand, Ken prob acquires gifs at a feverish rate to begin with--then pulling out any that seem kinda relevant.

Mister Porridge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...one (well - some!...) may think of Genesis as this intense & forbidding character - but sounds here so notably thotful & unaggressive (in the British manner).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm tim from champaign:

I think of Genesis as a countercultural chameleon. As his creative interests evolve/change he absorbs and displays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Hugh:

Needn't be said but this is the outsider version of Floyd's On the Run.
Avatar 4:33pm Lopez:

This show has been an mood roller coaster. I'm digging the journey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm tim from champaign:

My above comment wasn't a dis; just an appreciation of Genesis' ability to adapt over the years.
Avatar 4:34pm Cheri Pi:

I hear ya TfC and RRN63-agree w/ da both of yous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- didn't seem a dis @ all to me - in fact better-informed than the impression I expressed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm DCE:

September seems like a million years ago already
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm tim from champaign:

I definitely dig your point too, RRN. I think the difference between Genesis and some artists that are identified as transgressive, "dangerous" and intense is that Genesis is a thoughtful person. He can push and pull back. Whereas, GG Allin, Whitehouse, Boyd Rice, etc is push, push, push without any thoughtfulness beyond the ego..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & after all, the Impression is part of the palette Genesis uses, I should think - like many greats & media personalities (have called Warhol an 'Identity Artisit' for example)
...G.G. Allin denied being a Performance Artist - just wanted to identify as an uncompromised Rocker...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- so it's not just a question of 'Technique' - but 'To What End'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Mystical Weapons w/ Sean in Feb. :
- Very Kewl! Great drummer!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Matt from Springfield:

"Death of Samantha"--sweet! AIU in general is a great, often overlooked album. I remember that (amazing) "lengthy 2010 chat"--afterwards Brian serenaded the NYC airwaves by playing an entire album side of "Fly", with Yoko buzzing as a fly! :)

Hopefully BT will play "Listen, The Snow Is Falling", it's almost December. It's the closest thing WFMU has to an old sentimental Christmas classic!
  5:12pm TDk60:

Thanks for speaking on fracking Brian and Yoko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Give Renewable Energy a Chance !
  5:15pm J:

They are trying to frack the southern tier of NY next. Please keep up the fight! www.nytimes.com...
  5:16pm Ari:

Iceland is an unholy mess right now, I'm there. Portraying it as some utopia where change is happening is wildly misleading, sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I was outside with the kids for awhile and afraid I had missed Yoko's interview. Glad that I'm actually just in time.
Avatar 5:17pm northguineahills:

Especially since Croatia won 2-0 today.
Avatar 5:18pm northguineahills:

But, yeah, the aluminum smelting plants in the east of Iceland are worrying.
Avatar 5:19pm kirk from beer city usa:

excellent interviewing skills, BT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Ike:

Ari, the ice is always bluer on the other side of the fence, even for the most intelligent and perceptive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Rich in Washington:

Nice to hear Yoko live on the air. How cool is that?
  5:20pm Ari:

We're used to losing at soccer and we're used to being exploited by foreign industry. Not so used to being told it's actually paradise :) BTW, peace tower is paid for with tax money, peace everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm chris:

Thanks, BT! That was a great interview!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Matt from Springfield:

All right! Thanks Brian, Yoko and WFMU! This Archive is a Must-Listen!
Peace will come...
  5:21pm earrie:

@Ari re: Iceland - I think it depends on your perspective.

Loved hearing Yoko Ono say this, “..it's the creative work that gives me energy.”
Avatar 5:21pm Simon P:

thanks for the Yoko interview, what great creative energy
  5:22pm paula pc:

brian, if you got that kind of rapport from Obnox to Yoko, you're in the right line of work
Avatar 5:23pm Simon P:

Bad dancing in the Land of Hell sounds good to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Plastic Ono Psychedelic Stooges !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm tim from champaign:

What's awesome about Yoko is that she's ageless in her approach. Just like I never think about the age of an visual artist or author. Whereas, I think "how old are these guys" when I heard the new ZZ Top album for instance.

Thanks, BT!
  5:25pm LovecraftDude888:

what about the F train? I used to call it the F--K train when
it was running an hour late etc.
Avatar 5:28pm Brian Turner:

Thanks Paula. She's always super cool to chat with. There's an archive from 2010 where we got to talk to her a little longer.
  5:31pm paula pc:

that 2010 talk is really, really nice...she really is something amazing. for anyone here who doesn't know Fluxus work in general, I highly suggest looking it up and checking it out...once I learned so much about the movement, you see why ALL those folks are/were ageless...
Avatar 5:33pm northguineahills:

I was at one of the BAM shows.
Avatar 5:33pm Cecile:

Lady GaGA?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm tim from champaign:

No, Cecile, Bette Midler is not Lady Gaga. (hee hee)
Avatar 5:35pm Brian Turner:

Gaga was at the LA show.
Avatar 5:35pm Cecile:

she showed up at some performances of Yoko's though, right? OR Gaga brought her onstage?
Avatar 5:36pm Cecile:

thank you, Brian.
  5:37pm LovecraftDude888:

I just heard last 3 nights of Roseland will be Lady Ga Ga. A fitting epitaph to a creatively decimated and wanting NYC. I never was a huge Roseland fan but saw some good shows there. The venue itself kinda sucked.
Avatar 5:37pm Fredericks:

Recently saw Yungchen Lhamo performing with Peter Rowan and his Bluegrass band.
Avatar 5:41pm Brian Turner:

  5:45pm LovecraftDude888:

I meant to go see Batagov doing Feldman Triadic Memories a few weeks back but the tix prices were really quite high. I wasn't too thrilled about that. at Park Ave. Armory. But I'm sure it was a great concert...next time though they should offer some affordable seats. Even Carnegie Hall is cheaper half the time.
Avatar 5:45pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

This Torsten Nilsson thing is putting Stravinsky's "les noces" in my head. And that is a very good thing. Must run home & crank it later...
Avatar 5:47pm Fredericks:

Yes, Brian, there was some very interesting vocal improvisation going on.
  5:48pm LovecraftDude888:

reminds me a bit of some of the organ bits in Atom Heart Mother for some weird reason, Rick's parts.... in spots. Atom Heart Wombat
  5:49pm obama' s mamma:

this is quite good, noy sure what it is but I like it
Avatar 5:53pm Lopez:

This is a fitting follow up to Yoko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Carmichael:

Just got out of a meeting. Sorry, Yoko. Great show Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...common tendency among many to say 'I don't like Bel Canto'- but this is Kewl & so reminds us it's not the What but the What For...
Avatar 5:55pm Cecile:

this sounds like the mutation of Lonnie Holley and Jonathan Richman.
Avatar 5:57pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Velarde: gorgeous piece.
