Options Brian Turner: Playlist from November 5, 2013 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

mh, what do you think: is Nyogthaeblisz some kind of nsbm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm DCE:

this bird IS rather ominous
Avatar 3:52pm Cheri Pi:

In the auld days our brains couldn't process drum and bass without a helpful seizure or 2 to soften the blow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm braveness23:

No I was extremely sick with Crohn's disease and the nausea was overwhelming. I was at a friends house (I should have been in bed...) and he put on Autechre. The shrill and glitchy intensity was more than I could handle.
Avatar 3:52pm fred:

@b23: care to elaborate? I'm willing to trade my own musical hospital story
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm braveness23:

My ex-wife and I turned Autechre into an adjective and that tradition carries on to this day in my house. Playing Autechre is simply forbidden in our home.
Avatar 3:57pm fred:

OK, here's mine, much lighter: I once woke after surgery with the TV on and blaring. Cartoons first, then the French version of American Idol. Nothing horrible at first, but then they started singing. Seeing me standing on the bed trying to reach the off button with a pen while restrained by the IV drip, a nurse said I was awake enough to be released. Bonus track: once I got home I watched the Jandek DVD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm common:

good one, fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- the image would make a great cartoon fred !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm braveness23:

LOL Love it! So in your case the music caused you to be discharged. For me it caused me to be admitted.
Avatar 4:01pm northguineahills:

the only thing forbidden in my pad by my gf is post-60s Country, Classic Rock, and 90s House. She doesn't complain about anything else. Heck, we were vibing to Metal Machine Music Sunnite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 4:02pm northguineahills:

Avatar 4:03pm fred:

I did think about a clockwork orange there, and had to laugh when I realized most people would have opposite choices re Jandek vs. "talent" shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm braveness23:

I solve the musical divide by sneaking things on to her MP3 player so she hears them on her own and thinks that she discovered them. But we agree to agree on Autechre
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Mike East:

anybody feel like helping to settle an office debate: which has the better bassline: Billie Jean or I Want You Back?
Avatar 4:06pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Just catching up here: B23 @ 3:54, that is HIGH-LARIOUS.
  4:09pm anne:

Billie Jean--fer sher.
Avatar 4:10pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Mike East: the answer is, naturally, De Futura by Magma. Was it one of the two choices? No, but we can call that an editorial oversight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- basslines: how come cars w/ titanic Subwoofers never play Bach organ or John Entwistle ? Yerknow - not one ever...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm braveness23:

Yeah, Billy Jean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm braveness23:

In the summertime I drive around blasting Einstürzende Neubauten. I turn it up when I am stopped at lights near brothers blasting their thumping subwoofers
Avatar 4:12pm fred:

I'd say Billy Jean, but I resent the limited choice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I was sure 'Wallpaper Women' was the Passionate & Objektive Jokerfan...it's not?...
  4:14pm anne:

We need more kick-ass basslines--in pop and rap...I think most people really dig them even if they are not consciously thinking about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm tim from champaign:

I'm dense at the moment (or maybe all the time), who did "I Want You Back"? I can't place it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Mike East:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm tim from champaign:

Oh yeah.
Avatar 4:16pm fred:

PiL had good basslines in their early days, though probably not in a kick-ass sense
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I understand that Pop is Empty Calories - mall candy for teens - but does it really have to be this bad now ?? Everything is Bought Out - Music, Government...
- tim: J5. Can't remember the bassline though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Brach:

is this real Japanese or fake Japanese
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

J5 were kinda in that Motown tradition - as over-played as Downtown Soulville makes me realize that stuff is - you have to admit that 60s Motown stuff is like - perfect records, really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Brach:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Mike East:

thanks for your input, guys.
Avatar 4:20pm Cheri Pi:

  4:22pm anne:

RR3--Ya' know the J5 were all good what they did (I think...) and the pop of today is so bad--much of it is so empty--so clearly "product," so superficial
Avatar 4:23pm fred:

I don't know how I managed to miss Body/Head again: they played right next to where I work, and by the time I heard about it, it was too late
  4:24pm anne:

This on the toher hand is so good (Victor D Band)
Avatar 4:25pm fred:

This Victor Dimisich Band has Pearls Before Swine written all over it. That's fine by me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Having Taste & Artistic Sensibilities is a Talent - as much as being able to dance spectacularly or sing nine octaves w/ legato trills. These Young'ens always talk about 'great performers'. Sure (I love the Wh♂ & Hendrix & Iggy) - but so is the elephant crapping in the circus - & I don't play *his* music either.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but reaching w/ a pen & an IV to turn off Idol on TV is so much more succinct an image...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Mike East:

  4:43pm anne:

I think it is like it's always been here--the masses buy the sh*t about what is supposedly good--"eg, "Gaga, "Dancing with the Stars." and a minority is more discriminating.
Avatar 4:45pm fred:

@anne: and the old folk bitch about how there is no real music anymore
  4:45pm anne:

Wow, I think I'm having a flashback!!!!!
Avatar 4:46pm Cecile:

I liked Gaga for a while, but she stopped being sly and edgy and just kind of got bloated and self-involved.
  4:46pm anne:

Fred, yeah, I guess you are right. And this is one old folk who will try not to do that :)
Avatar 4:47pm Brian Turner:

Wow, so that was surreal. I was playing all this Australian stuff and Irwin walks into the studio showing Gotye around. I got my picture with him, he was really nice. What a crazy place this place is.
Avatar 4:48pm Cecile:

And i'm a big Adele fan. I think she has a certain something.
  4:49pm anne:

Watch out brian, I smell a conspiracy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- but in the 20th Century you had emerging racial minorities asserting a Music forged in Slavery
- & then a massive Youth demographic first emerging
- & PostWar - the conceit that Pop & Art could meet somehow
...like Dylan's friend Bobbie Neuwrith (sp??) saying in 'No Direction Home' documentary they would ask 'Should we see Ornette tonight?' - 'Well - has he got anything to *say*?!?' Who cares if anyone is saying anything *now*?
- Good stuff is happening always - but who hears it now - ?! A few thousand Anti-Commercial Media FreeForm FMUheads ?!?
- & the 'Business Model' of the entire Music Industry is totally up in the air, of course...
Avatar 4:50pm Cheri Pi:

Pics or it didn't happen BT
Avatar 4:51pm Cecile:

I like a lot of 90s house. Murk is pretty dang great.
And Cajmere and Green Velvet came out then, too.

And post-60s country leaves out Dolly's "Jolene" and Willie Nelson's "Red-Headed Stranger".
  4:52pm anne:

--Cecile. I've liked some popular stuff over the years, fer sher.
--RR3---I like your style.

Avatar 4:54pm Cecile:

hey, Brian, forgot to ask if you partied with Primitive Calculators over in OZ. What was that like, if you did?
Avatar 4:55pm fred:

@anne: I'm probably older than you, and my comment was mostly aimed at myself: I can go there if I'm not careful
Avatar 4:55pm Cecile:

Most of it is pretty crappy. But there's good in every year.
And I can go curmugeonly, too, at the drop of a hat.
Avatar 4:57pm Cecile:

Usually when I hear Phillip Phillip's "Home". That makes me stabby.
Avatar 4:57pm Cecile:

or whatever the hell his stupid name is.
Avatar 4:58pm Cecile:

and Mumford & Sons. Jesus fucking Christ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& there's exponential Population Explosion: How big an audience constitutes 'Popular Music' ?
- FMU alone blows the cover off 'no good music now' - but how Popular is it?
...I think the rate of release in new media makes a difference too - it's ever more sensationalistic & disposable, not even intended to last - & yes, I'm old enuff we used to get high & have the time & attention to listen to whole Albums & things - altho' are more glued to Devices than ever, I suppose...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Mike East:

I'll confess to liking that Lorde, "Royals" song. DJ Keilli introduced me to it and I showed it to my wife...who now won't stop playing it...daughter likes it, too.

Avatar 5:07pm Cecile:

Craftspeople can maybe see a more tangible result than an artist in their time, but you never know how posterity is going to treat them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- as someone around here commented re Lou's passing - they'll be appreciating the Velvets & Lou in a hundred years - but [bands that remain nameless] - ??...
Avatar 5:15pm Cecile:

I think you can't even count on that. You have to please yourself in this life via art or craft, and if later folks take it as inspiration, good for them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Ike:

Who was that causing trouble there and getting snipped? Was that Wiley?
Avatar 5:17pm Brian Turner:

Ike always appears when shit goes wrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- songwriters say you can't even think about how it will be received - & then there are ones who write for hire or to order - some very very successful ! Lou passed thru a song factory & learned form as part of what he became - but makes the point the Velvets had Dropped Out - they were *already* failures!...
Avatar 5:18pm Cecile:

hahahaha, it's like Shazam or something.
Avatar 5:18pm Cecile:

yay! PI!
  5:18pm anne:

To me that Lorde is SO overrated. maybe she is good relative to those like her. But does she bring anything new to the table? Critics are hungry for decent stuff that might sell.
