A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

for a speech exercise, their accent sounded off....
Avatar 9:05am Jeff:

That young man who was on the radio before you insisted on playing things which were just entirely too raucous for the early morning. It was traumatic.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Adrian in London:

Funny you should mention that Trouble, because I've decided to go to the chiropractor instead. I'm a bit crocked after a recent crash. Nothing major.

awesome track. i always loved the version by This Mortal Coil

Trouble, that's what usually happens with me and physical therapy. It's usually two days after that it starts to kick in.
  9:39am KRYPT:

Felt are amazing, I've had the pleasure of meeting Lawerence a couple of times now and a more charming and disarming person would be hard to find. Hello Trouble and FMUers.

Avatar 9:41am dc pat:

Poison??! They were from my home town, Mechanicsburg.
Avatar 9:41am Cecile:

Love it.
Yup, I knew they were a PA band. And Brett Michaels stole their live act.
Avatar 9:44am dc pat:

personally I wanted to kill all those guys, but Kix actually were pretty nice fellows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Adrian in London:

@Krypt I'm still waiting for Lawrence of Belgravia to come out for home viewing.

@Trouble There was a programmeon BBC R4 this morning about the difference between samba and bossa. Really interesting.
Avatar 9:45am Cecile:

Yeah, they started long before the hair band craze., like in 80.
Avatar 9:46am Cecile:

they're just kind of like a baby AC/DC, bad innuendo, great grooves.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Mike East:

I once took a cab from Harrisburg to Brooklyn.

Good morning, all.
Avatar 10:00am Cecile:

that's cool, Pat. Even my hometown has good beer, wi-fi and a potentially kickass dance club with cheap drinks.

Avatar 10:07am Cecile:

what's his deal, glenn?
  10:08am KRYPT:

@Adrain in London, yeah earlier this year he was doing an art collaboration with Jim Lambie and he did a kind of interview/chat where he talked about making Lawrence of Belgravia and lots of other cool stories. I even got a signed poem from him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am tim from champaign:

DC Pat, are the northern PA natural areas primarily state parks? You might have given me an idea for some nice fall camping.

Avatar 10:20am Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am tim from champaign:

@ Jennique - per IMDB, the deer hunting scenes were filmed at Mt Baker in Washington. I got all excited that they might have been filmed in the Alleghenies.

Trouble - how goes the first week of school?
Avatar This Is The Modern World with Trouble Hellraiser 2022 10:33am Erella:

Embroidery? I would have thought it was a woven thing. I saw a movie last night on Netflix that I think you'd enjoy, Trouble. It looks kind of too sweet, but it is really lovely. It is with Gérard Depardieu www.youtube.com...
Avatar 10:33am dc pat:

Yeah, I think it was set in western PA. Rolling Rocks, etc...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am tim from champaign:

"You like Rolling Rock?". The mill, wedding, bar, etc scenes were filmed in a number of Rust Belt cities in Western PA and Eastern OH.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am tim from champaign:

Yeah, I've never enjoyed Rolling Rock either. I found it to be both skunky and syrupy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Patrick:

the move was EASY! yesterday was EM's first day... however im still in Columbus finishing up work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Ike:

Oh great, Newark is now responsible for Rolling Rock? As if we didn't have enough problems already. (J/k, I know nothing about Rolling Rock.)

I drink the Yuengling because it's by far the best of the "cheap" beers. Same price as your Bud, Miller, ad nauseum. Shiner would be my preference but they price it as an import. Huh. Just the reverse in Texas.
Avatar 10:54am sugarwolf:

I like the kids DJs better than some of the adult DJs.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am tim from champaign:

Blatz is good. Retro Schlitz is OK but priced too high. I'm a big Gennessee fan too. Stroh's is good. Huber Bock is the beer I drank too much of in college. But I use the Huber Bock cases to this day for my 7"s.
Avatar 11:04am glenn:

personally, i like a good root beer.
Avatar 11:04am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

My dad saved a can of IC that had all the Steelers on it when the won the superbowl in 1980. He vowed to drink it the next time they went to the superbowl, which turned out to be 16 years later. The can had rust all up the outside, he drank it at halftime and they LOST. That's a devoted Iron City drinker (and Steeler fan).

Avatar 11:11am Cecile:

glenn - you should try Killebrew, created by Harmon Killebrew so he would have something to drink at picnics and parties when he stopped drinking. Good herb flavor, but smooth like Dad's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am tim from champaign:

Goose Island make some good soda. Their ginger beer and root beer is deee-licious.

We are trying at every brewpub we go to get them to make sodapopcoke. They have a great vibe, great food truck food, but nothing special for my friends in recovery. Some do, thank goodness.
Avatar 11:14am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Cecile - ha! No my dad soldiered on and is still alive to tell the tale. He moved us all out to sunny California in the 70's but is still very much a part of the Steeler Nation. That aside, I think the worst canned beer I ever had was Narragansett beer. That took all the fun out of everything after I drank it.
Avatar 11:15am glenn:

dad's is a good one. i have to admit, good ole a&w is one of my faves.
Avatar 11:16am Cecile:

The Steelers are the Packers of the East Coast. You don't leave Steeler Nation, you get carried out feet first. (My aunt bleeds black and gold)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A&W comes w/ heavy nostalgia here for drive-in & fries...

Avatar 11:17am glenn:

there' s a brewery in nova scotia called propeller. they brew both beer and soft drinks, which i think is a bit unusual. are their others?
Avatar 11:19am Cecile:

I look forward to the Steeler playoff buffets. To say they are overflowing is to do them injustice. And the whole damn town is covered in black and gold streamers.
Avatar 11:19am Cecile:

There sure are, glenn. There is a brewery in Milwaukee that started with root beer and moved to beer.
Avatar 11:20am Cecile:

Sprecher started with sodapopcoke.
Avatar 11:20am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Being a kid in California, we did the A&W drive-thru thing. I remember the commercials in the 70's where people would hold the can with their thumb and pinky to make it look as if they had a glass mug. I spent lots of time as a kid trying to do that.
Avatar 11:21am Cecile:

hahahahaha, jenn.
I loved those cold glass mugs. Root beer is the only "brown pop" I like.

well, bitter is a beer. bitters is a digestif. which are you referring to?
Avatar 11:26am Jeff:

"...from the glass-lined banks of the Latrobe river..."

wait, I think I may have gotten something wrong there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...like the health food store ginger ale that's about (serious) ginger more than sugar - great stuff - some w/ raspberry or cherry...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am northguineahills:

Valerie June, I dig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

glenn: That would be relevant.
- Yeah neato VJ tune.
Avatar 11:30am Cecile:

bitters are extracts of plants dissolved in alcohol that give cocktails some zing.
Avatar 11:30am Cecile:

bitter with no s is a kind of beer.
  11:31am moxie:

bitters is made with gentian root, also a key ingredient in Moxie.

Trouble - were they serving Narragansett ironically? Cause that is the only way that is gonna work.

- Is English Bitter Beer like IPA or Brutal Bitter out of Portland, OR? (I gotta start somewhere...wiki perhaps...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Si !
Avatar 11:33am Cecile:

no, it's pretty medium in the hop department, interstingly enough.
Avatar 11:33am Jeff:

English Bitter has some bite, but doesn't usually seem to go overboard with the hops to the extent of smelling like a christmass tree.

Don't get me started on the "hops as extreme sport" movement in American beer.
Avatar 11:34am glenn:

i always found bitter sort of sweet. maybe that's just me.
Avatar 11:35am Jeff:

Wish... I... could... edit... typos. I hatesss leaving posts out there with typos.
Avatar 11:36am Cecile:

A martini is great with a drop of orange bitters.
Now you can actually find them, thank you cocktail geeks.
Avatar 11:36am dc pat:

I got a can of Moxie when I went to Maine. I had it in a cabinet for a year until mrs. dc pat knocked it off the shelf and it exploded all over the kitchen.
Avatar 11:36am Cecile:

Maja, did you embroider that piece? That has stitches I've only seen in books!
Avatar 11:37am Cecile:

I had some moxie. It was like Jaeger with no alcohol. No thanks.
Avatar 11:38am glenn:

oh cecile, you STILL got moxie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx Jeff. Tasty maybe w/ fairly low ABV. glenn says sweet...
...Someone gave me a Moxie not too long ago. The rep is they taste nasty - I thot it wasn't so bad w/ the gentian - rooty taste - better than a malted battery-acid Cola far as I'm concerned.
Avatar 11:38am Jeff:

...and I vastly prefer Manhattans made with good orange bitters to those made my Dad's way with Angostura (which used to be the only bitters anybody had heard of or could get back in the day).
Avatar 11:39am Cecile:

hahahahaha, glenn
Avatar 11:40am Cecile:

Jeff, they are much easier to find now. I'm surprised. And not just orange.
Avatar 11:40am Cecile:

Rev, I have never developed a taste for Coke unless there is a quart of ice cream in the glass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I'm nutty for coffee, tea - even Monster Drinks (w/ Guarana, folks)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...in my old age, I find sickly sweet less & less necessary...still caffeine's bitch bigtime though (don't be like me kiddoes)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am tim from champaign:

I'm scared of energy drinks for some reason. For some reason gulping a handful of trucker speed seems more appealing than chugging an energy drink.
Avatar 11:46am dc pat:

the older I get, the more ice cream I eat. I've been eating that stuff every night lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Trouble:

no irony for the pricesd they were charging! it was like the eighties in 'the dutch'
Avatar 11:47am Cecile:

rev, a nurse told me that my elevated caffeine consumption would ensure I never would get Parkinson's.
Avatar 11:48am glenn:

on the other hand, how would you know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- On the Caff to Cocaine Spectrum, Guarana is in-between somewhere - & they promote these drinks as having less caff than coffee (prob. to kids too!)...I do it *myself* for work in place of coffee sometimes - but I see somebody w/ a can & do think 'speedfreak!' somewhere in the back of my mind...
