the benington flag looks like a big frowny face. What do you guys think the 51st state is going to be?
Avatar 3:12pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Uh oh, I'm going to go five minutes into your Joe Frank this week. Timeshift fiascos.
Avatar 3:12pm Sean D. Daily:

@Mike East: Sad flag is sad? (Meeting's been postponed, apparently...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Irwin:

@Kenzo: I'll stall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...It's a 9/11 survivor
...looks more Angry than Sad to me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm rrg:

Why shouldn't JF and Kenzo's program run at the same time?

Are you boys talking a secret code?
Avatar 3:14pm Sem Chumbo:

Hey, glenn. Right some good, my son. Et vous?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...looks, in fact!, remarkably like the Monster from the Id :
Avatar 3:17pm glenn:

Avatar 3:17pm Sean D. Daily:

Oh no, KENZO'S STUCK IN THE TIME SHIFT! He's devolving into a howler monkey! Not that you could really tell the difference... ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Caryn:

That is one pissed off flag.

So funny, I opened my show last week with a great Soulful Dynamics single that wasn't this song!
Avatar 3:27pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I apologize that I have shifted certain comments over to wfmu.org... . I cannot control what I do.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Irwin:

Mr. P produced.
Avatar 3:32pm Droll:

Kenzo, If you call this broken, you'll need to try much harder. I can still see everything Irwin is doing on the studio cam... That's not a vacuum!
Avatar 3:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

That's not a vacuum, that's his hat. Boom boom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm pacific standard simon:

Sorry I drank all your beer, Droll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm rrg:

I seem to be missing something here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm common:

Avatar 3:35pm Droll:

rrg, Yes, you are. I can see you now, too. Would you please get dressed?
Avatar 3:36pm Sem Chumbo:

sem - then there's this twatwaffle. -news.nationalpost.com...
  3:45pm popsicornia:

I thought Ken & Andy covered the time shift business last week...or was that next week?
Avatar 3:47pm Sem Chumbo:

g: I sure do miss TO, man, just for stuff like this:)
Avatar 3:48pm Droll:

Dueling guitar solos, more time signatures than a Yes song... Why would he use a pseudonym for this important hit single?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Irwin:

The next song is for LAURA L, if she's listening.
Avatar 3:51pm Droll:

Damnit! Lane doesn't even list that album on his own website. Is that actually released? And if so, does it have a Trifecta?
Avatar 3:51pm Parq:

Dug that version of "Sunshine Superman", which was one of my first favorite songs. As a kid, I was totally pulled in by the reference to Green Lantern.
  3:52pm Laura L:

I am--and I know that models don't drink beer from a bottle! Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

So, who's up for some Hello Kitty beer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm rrg:

I like to think that this song would have been for Laura even if she WEREN'T listening.
Avatar 3:56pm Sem Chumbo:

KFHP: I see nothing wrong w/ an "overly friendly" beer. You up for a trip to the Middle Kingdom?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm rrg:

Haven't heard this for a while. Too long.
  3:57pm Laura L:

Louise's song was like a breath of Final Net Extra Hold!
Avatar 4:02pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Thank you if you're stalling. T minus 2 minutes.
Avatar 4:02pm nfrae:

Stairway to stardom!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm rrg:

  4:03pm Listening Out There:

As usual, enjoying the comments. Meetings prevent me from listening live. Will likely get my fix from the archives...
Avatar 4:04pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Ooh, Coma, good one. Thanks to the timeshift participants on both sides.
Avatar 4:05pm Sem Chumbo:

"Soft downy palm of Orpheus." Joe is some kind of purple prose poet by times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Ike:

This one has a truly brilliant background music loop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Carmichael:

Hello Irwin and people of Flagland. Woke up just in time for a coma.
Avatar 4:10pm glenn:

soft downy palm of orpheus needs to be said in captain james t. kirk voice.
Avatar 4:14pm glenn:

duderonomy. my favourite book of the bible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Mike East:

aw, give the guy a break, Larry. he's having a good time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm northguineahills:

Avatar 4:28pm Sem Chumbo:

A tranquillizing suppository: why yes, it IS that time of day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Caryn:

That's Patrick Bachau, isn't it?
  4:40pm as:

great cut! probably my favorite blue note soul-jazz/funk record
Avatar 4:49pm Droll:

Before the smelly hippie starts, let me preemptively say it's not selling out, it's buying in! They won The Man over!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Caryn:

Man, this guy must've had a coronary when the 90s' Woodstock concerts were held. The sponsors, the rampant consumerism, not being able to even bring a bottle of water in, fighting all over the place...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm rrg:

"The mainstream culture, the pig culture"...Wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- which proves him right or wrong ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm common:

pigs, man...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm rrg:

That's more a Brit expression, Caryn ("have a coronary"). I like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm efd:

I love the way he's saying "sponsors" with such distaste.
Avatar 4:55pm glenn:

you say getting along together, i say too whacked out on acid to care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm rrg:

You have to find these guys (the DJ and the caller). They would probably love to hear this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the Woodstock they burned down was the 1st Festival w/ it's own ATM - & $4 a bottle of water...
Avatar 4:55pm steve:

Caryn, i was under the impression many of these fervent hippies had turned into stock brokers by that point
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

He has a point about a Culture being sold back to itself...Yerknow - *that* doesn't happen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Caryn:

@steve: well, I'd say "gotten auto dealerships" or "written organic cookbooks", but whatevs...
Avatar 4:58pm Parq:

"Understanding Marx"! Man, does hearing this take me back. Seems like another lifetime when Irwin first started playing this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Caryn:

The point in the Woodstock movie I kinda love is, how after about 2 hours of people talking in a kind of mainstream way, Arlo Guthrie takes the stage and sounds like the most stereotypical hippie ever thought up by a Hollywood screenwriter. He literally goes, "I was just rapping with the fuzz, can you dig it?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...drop!: time for Brezhnev's funky breakdance...
Avatar 5:00pm Parq:

By the way, I *still* don't know what the third line in the chorus is, except that it seems to be about Freud and Skinner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Irwin:

"Freud's a fraud and Skinner's of no use"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Caryn:

Irwin beat me to it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...hmm - a lot of people put Marx & Freud together in a Rational-Materialist philosophy...they both came after Darwin, btw...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- but - yerknow - a PostModernist of my era would say something relativistic like that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Caryn:

@RRN63: true, but I guess the song is saying "if you want to get your mind in order, forget all this trendy psychoanalysis bull and just read Marx and Lenin!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm northguineahills:

Understanding Marx sounds better then Cornelius Cardew's 70s 'Marxist pop for the working man' ditties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Right - Psychology is Bourgeois...
Avatar 5:08pm steve:

Caryn @4:57 - that too of course... but my experience from growing up with political punks and angry preachy types is that the ones who toss around language like the Woodstock guy are always the first to do a full 180
Avatar 5:08pm Parq:

I've been around the WFMU-niverse long enough that "Un'ng Marx" just seems to want to be paired with "Ronald Racist Rambo [something] Baby-Killer Reagan".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Caryn:

So we have the "everywhere" song, then the "nowhere" song... I almost feel Irwin chose this pair just because of the word pairing. I wonder if there's more to come?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Caryn:

@steve: yeah, I kinda see him working for some huge insurance company.
  5:12pm Juurakkotukka:

Where can I find that Cat Chamber song? What kind of band it is? Loved it! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Irwin:

Cat Chamber's on Soundcloud. Free DL.
Avatar 5:14pm Droll:

Okay, maybe the DJ ultimately bought in to The Man's pig agenda, but either way, it's not "selling out" -- it's "buying in".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Caryn:

@Droll: yeah, that's the oft forgotten 4th part of Timothy Leary's turn of phrase: "turn on, tune in, drop out, buy in".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Carmichael:

Ya, just ask Swamp Dogg.
  5:19pm Juurakkotukka:

@Irwin sweet, thanks! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Carmichael:

OK, now we get to the jangly pop set of Irwin's show. I usually like this part best.
  5:19pm beth:

Thanks for playing Sam! It's been far too long since I've heard her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm rrg:

Yes. I love hearing her. Thanks.
Avatar 5:20pm glenn:

sam phillips is great, and her drummer is the best. (jay bellerose)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm rrg:

Which makes me think of adding that T-Bone is doing some really great stuff on the ABC series "Nashville".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm efd:

thanks Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...of course - let us remember that that was the era of Nixon & J. Edgar Hoover & Mayor Daley
- & Ronald Reagan - whom they want to put on Mt. Rushmore - as Gov. of Cali. saying re student protests, 'If it takes a bloodbath, let's get it over w/'...
- & these were indeed Swine.
Avatar 5:28pm Droll:

Irwin, Will the original unabridged air checks be made available for download? I smell bumper source material.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Irwin:

Lee Morgan on trumpet w/Blakey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Irwin:

@Droll: Don't know. Ken's call. But we will post all existing 1970 source material as streaming archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- oh - that's why it's like perfect burnished fire...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Album :
- & Wayne Shorter on sax...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm rrg:

If you can stream it, you can archive it. Just takes a little longer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...sibling album of 'Night in Tunisia'...
Avatar 5:36pm Droll:

Hopefully Ken will get a whiff of whatever the 70's DJs were doing, inhale deeply, hold it for a few seconds, and exercise his good judgement.
  5:36pm Listening Out There:

For a sec, thought this Sun Ra was actually Moondog. Oopsy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...days of the Draft, days when people went to Prison for two joints - days of Economic Boom (before the 70s recessions & inflation went on) when dropping out & being anti-materialist didn't seem quite so utterly lunatic as they do to us now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...this makes me think of P.J. Harvey - & I don't hate it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Caryn:

@RRN63: to be fair, dropping out and being anti-materialist are back in fashion now, only they're called "downshifting".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Carmichael:

Over here it's called "Occupying".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm northguineahills:

Woahh!, awesome Stephen Merrit cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm northguineahills:

I agree, Caryn.
  5:46pm Philip:

That "All Night Long" thing was great. What else can I say, it was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - some of the Environmental concerns have come all the way home now - we speak of Sustainability in Business, &tc. ...
- The 1/10th of 1% got bailed out of what the Reversal of the PostDepression legislation inevitably lead to
- & you still have RightWingers shouting 'Socialism!!'...
Avatar 5:52pm Droll:

SOCIALISM! (for capitalists)
  5:54pm Laura L:

Lovely to hear Ms. Sorrentino's voice and piano, as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

: D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm dale:

first time i listened to pride of man by gordon lightfoot after 9/11 i did a 'holy crap!' headslap
Avatar 5:55pm glenn:

please. most right wingers wouldn't know a socialist if one bit them on the ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Ike:

I don't know about Mac, but last I checked, the best way to listen to a RealAudio archive on a Windows box is to use Real Alternative w/Media Player Classic. Then you can avoid RealPlayer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yes - lovely...& a few people failed @ this task...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm rrg:

Down Below. Another classic.
Avatar 5:58pm Droll:

Swell show, I. Have a fun week, and remember, if you find a hippie biting your ass, that's called a "socialist".
Avatar 5:58pm Jeff:

About those older archives, should you be inclined to follow Irwin's trail of breadcrumbs to them - they're in RealAudio format, which is kind of problematic right there, and are served by a piece of server software which is an archived binary running (sort of) in a compatibility mode, and... well, the whole thing is made up of chewing gum and baling wire.

So if you have odd difficulties listening to them, know that we're aware that the current setup is far from optimal. We're beginning a massive project to transcode all those Real files to a format which is actually still widely supported, and serve them from something which actually works. But it'll take some time. There's a lot of work to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm rrg:

And Tiny Tim recorded this as well.

Thanks for yet another fine half-afternoon, Irwin.

Bye, all.
