Avatar 12:06pm Diane Kamikaze:

My guest today is JERRY A of Poison Idea! He should be here by 12:20! If you've got questions, let em rip now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar 12:06pm Jim:

Hey Diane..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Rich in Washington:

Many fond memories of Poison Idea gigs in Portland.
Truth told, Poison Idea was my first ever punk show at the Satyricon.
Avatar 12:08pm Cecile:

No weird questions:
Did you play much with the Wipers? Were they a big influence on you?

Whose chest got cut into on that one album cover?

Whose record collection was on the cover of the "Record Collectors are Pretentious Assholes" 45? Did you have a pretentious asshole record collector in mind?

Did you ever play outside the West Coast? I don't remember you guys making it to Detroit back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm common:

how was the show in philly last eve?
Avatar 12:09pm Cecile:

see, normal questions.
Avatar 12:10pm Cecile:

yes! I love this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Rich in Washington:

Jerry: Do you remember trying to take a KGON Defenders of Rock t-shirt off of some surfer-looking dude? It was my clueless friend Jay and we dragged him to a punk show and I don't think he ever went to another one after that.
Avatar 12:11pm Jim Devoid:

Question for Jerry A:Was alcohol somehow involved when the ceiling of the Lismar Lounge in NY caught fire when you all played there in the early 90's?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm northguineahills:

I somehow missed Code of Honer (at least in my memory).
Avatar 12:12pm Cecile:

Avatar 12:12pm Jim:

How come he doesn't play with Thee Slayer Hippy any more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm eyenoise:

Log in to star ALL WHITE!
  12:13pm r i s k y:

Loving the set Diane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Rich in Washington:

Whoa! This is a weird version. Not like the LP. Is it from Cows N' Beer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Stevel:

Ooooooh, Die Kreusen. Always a pleaser, back in the day. One of my favorite full-out rock screams.
Avatar 12:14pm Jim:

Zero Boys tonight!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Stevel:

Somewhere, I have a great (not really) photo of the back of the DKreuzen's vocalist's throat.

Where are Zero Boys?
Avatar 12:15pm Jim:

Avatar 12:16pm Jim:

in Brooklyn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Stevel:

Zero Boys need to do a triumphal Indiana Return tour. For me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Stevel:

What a set!
Avatar 12:17pm Cecile:

now a question for you, Diane, how was that Wrekmaster Harmonies show? Was JR Robinson all intense 'n' shit?

Avatar 12:17pm Jim:

I know they played there in the 90s..it was a big deal..a bunch of people I know went..

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Rich in Washington:

Poison Idea's Tom did a helluva radio show in the mid-80s on KBOO. Not sure if it was a regular show or if he just guested on someone else's show but it was fantastic. Maybe Jerry remembers something about it.
I still have a bunch of cassettes of it.
Avatar 12:20pm Jim:

This reminds me of HAPPY FLOWERS
Avatar 12:21pm Cecile:

More and more I'm getting the feeling that the old HC bands are getting the treatment the hippies gave the old bluesmen. Except the bands obviously have more control over the output. it's kind of weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm fred:

Dumb question, feel free to ignore: any chance of a show in Paris, France? If so, how can I make sure I hear about it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Rich in Washington:

@Cecile: Yeah, the Killed By Death series is like Folkways Records for Punk.
Avatar 12:24pm Cecile:

Exactly. And everyone is trying to memorize the licks.
Avatar 12:25pm Cecile:

it's the Stooges Wax Museum all over again.

Avatar 12:26pm Jim:

This sounds like the soundtrack to my HS mix tape
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Stevel:

If people keep working derivatively (HUGE word for me) we should be down to one-note songs in no time.
Avatar 12:27pm Jim:

That made no sense..I meant my HS years..or a mix tape I would have had in HS
Avatar 12:27pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Rich in Washington:

For me, punk was a time and place which no longer exists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Stevel:

(Played this song 25 times in a row, one night, driving. It did not get old.)

Punk is no longer a workable label for a musical genre. Punk once meant Pere Ubu, Blondie, Talking Heads, Richard Hell, Sex Pistols... etc, etc, etc. The mark keeps moving.
Avatar 12:30pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

WHHHAAA..[crashes into room, oddly floor-up, as if fired from some goddamned cannon from hell]
Avatar 12:30pm Jim:

punk is an attitude..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Rich in Washington:

Green Day & Offspring sound so lame and neutered. I can't see how anyone could be excited by that. I also can't fathom the style of music now called Hardcore - that screechy screamo music. It's silly. It's the howl of some kid who got a Jetta for graduation instead of the Audi they asked for.
Avatar 12:31pm Jim:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Andrew Waterloo:

Didn't screemo stop being a thing 10 years ago?
Avatar 12:33pm Jim:

I got an advance of the new Lp..it's pretty fucking incredible..in the vein of Heartwork
Avatar 12:33pm Cecile:

I love Carcass's Metallica album.
Avatar 12:33pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

ah, magical chug-chug. I love thee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Rich in Washington:

But I am old. It's like the old geezer still bitching about kids and their baggy pants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Stevel:

Reading "From the Velvets to the Voidoids by Clinton Heylin (Thanks to someone on this board, I believe.) Fascinating how what became "Punk" came from bands/non bands moving as far away from accepted genres and performance norms as possible. Long, endless jams and other often tedious exercises made up the foundation.
Avatar 12:34pm InBrkly:

@JimDevoid: I was going to ask the same question about 924 Gilman back in 89. Everclear and a lighter nearly brought the place down. People threw wet tshirts at the rafters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I have free Sirius on my car radio for the next couple of weeks. They should play some of Diane's selections instead of G 'n' R on their hard rock channels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Cecile, it really draws you in doesn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Rich in Washington:

Pig was such a fierce guitar player. Even his tinny-sounding axe on Pick Your Kings is incredible.
Avatar 12:36pm Droll:

Today's show is so good, even lurkers need to stop their work and give an approving nod.
Avatar 12:37pm Cecile:

Velvets to the Voidoids is a great book.

Yeah, Andrew, it's so well played and written. You would never guess...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Mike East:

Avatar 12:37pm Jim:

Diane is reliving her early days of being a DJ right now...and it kicks ass
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Rich in Washington:

I remember seeing PI for the first time and was stunned by how not punk Pig/Tom looked and what a kick-ass guitar player he was live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Rich in Washington:

Yes, Diane, this set rocks plenty! Great choices!
Avatar 12:40pm Cecile:

Many of these I played on air back in the day.
Of course mixed up withe everything else you could imagine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Stevel:

Rich in Washington: Many best music memories for me were encountering bands who did not 'look' like they were 'supposed to'. Even though I was raised on Glam, I loved the way people fucked with or ignored image.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Cecile, also very fluid
Avatar 12:40pm Cecile:

Rich, some of the toughest bands back in the day looked completely normal. It was kinda funny.
Avatar 12:40pm Jim:

I need to go get lunch..but I don't want to miss anything..then again..I own everything that has been played so far..but It's JUST NOT THE SAME
Avatar 12:41pm Cecile:

ha, stevel, exactly.
Avatar 12:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Yep, this old fart is transformed. Quite a time machine, this set. All it's missing is the crunchy drop-out of old cassette compilations that have been eaten by cheap boom-boxes too often.
Avatar 12:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Jim: That's my issue exactly. And the food truck of choice is just 2 blocks away. Arms too short. Stupid arms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Rich in Washington:

@Cecile: I remember lots of cool kids at punk shows who just had their own look and not the stereotypical punk look until around '83 or so and then everyone started looking the same. Seems like girls stopped showing up unless they were someone's girlfriend, too.
Avatar 12:43pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm common:

Avatar 12:44pm Jim:

VOIVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD...(see I'm glad I didn't leave yet!!!!!!)
Avatar 12:44pm Cecile:

YES. Me and my friends were often among the few girls who came on their own to punk shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Time for ... wait for it ...
Voivod! !! !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm northguineahills:

Ciminy, I have the same dilemma as Jim. Time for food. Be back soonish.
Avatar 12:45pm Cecile:

it's like the punk rulebook got codified and then it was all non-punk influences, women and gays get out. My friend disagrees, but he was in Madison where it was more politically conscious. In Detroit, that's what happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm fred:

Maybe we old farts need a manifesto, something we can defend from these youngsters. Woolf penned "a room of one's own", who will dare to write "a lawn of one's own", just so that we can scream at those damn kids to get off it
Avatar 12:46pm Cecile:

People like the Necros, John Brannon, Die Kreuzen moved out of that pretty damn fast when it got that way.
Avatar 12:47pm Cecile:

not for every show. A lot of the SST bands drew a varied crowd.
Avatar 12:48pm Cecile:

And the Grumpy's 13 show was great because the girls that came with their boyfriends were probably the girls who went to HC shows solo in the 80s.
Avatar 12:49pm Cecile:

Not girls, good Lord. The women.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Stevel:

Madison was interesting, and a bit mellower than other areas. Not very likely to get hurt at a show, unless you were looking for it. Girls weren't a complete rarity, but, the slam-dance floor was very much a place for adolescent male energy. There were definitely girls who held their own.
Avatar 12:53pm Cecile:

Yeah. I think a lot of girls and short guys got turned off by the pit. I know I did. But standing back further ended up being better because you could actually watch the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Ugh...we're losin' it, folks. When Voivod comes on, we need to VOIVOD! !! !!! Many of the usuals must be on vacation or at lunch today.
Avatar 12:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

The political/dischordy/vegetarian-esque punks in DC did definitely self-isolate. The micro-tribes were hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm common:

ah, the stench of philly. nuthin like it.
Avatar 12:56pm Jim Devoid:

The stench of cheese steaks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm fred:

Where's Cheri Pi? We can't properly acknowledge Voivod while she's missing, can we?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm common:

that's right, jim
Avatar 12:58pm Cheri Pi:

Here! was at lunch
Avatar 12:58pm Cheri Pi:

  1:02pm Didier:

When will you play in Europe ? Cheers from France Jerry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm fred:

WORRIED, that's where you got us, all for a lousy falafel? You're heartless
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Rich in Washington:

JERRY: How did Tom and you meet?
  1:09pm dinatekno:

Loving this interview! Nice to hear a fantastic musician give a great interview. No BS - refreshing. And - this pretentious record collector still goes to live shows!
Avatar 1:09pm Cheri Pi:

We are so lucky to be hearing this interview, thanks DK!
Avatar 1:10pm InBrkly:

Punk IS change. It is recognizing that things have gotten stale and need shaking up.
Avatar 1:12pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

EEK! Nice...
Avatar 1:12pm joshS:

great hearing Jerry A!
Avatar 1:12pm Cheri Pi:

I agree with the pro dub scentiment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Mike East:

Avatar 1:14pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

alright. Hunger taking over. Beginning to see rainbow hedgehog balloons levitating. Must tackle that foodtruck.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar 1:18pm Cheri Pi:

Great bleep!
Avatar 1:18pm Cecile:

Most eclectic choices in a while.
Avatar 1:19pm Cheri Pi:

I approve of Syd Barrett!!
Avatar 1:19pm Cheri Pi:

What Cecile said
  1:19pm andy:

hearing eek a mouse made me so incredibly happy. I had a tape 20+ years ago a friend made that had eek and poison idea on it. I'm glad to see my crazy ol' friend Pete wasn't so crazy.
Avatar 1:20pm Cheri Pi:

we listened to Syd Barrett all the time in the 80's along with Discharge and the gang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Whosondephone:

Syd Barrett!!!
Avatar 1:27pm Cheri Pi:

Feedtime was on rough trade
Avatar 1:27pm Cheri Pi:

I definitely hear the Rough Trade sound in that pick.
Avatar 1:28pm Cecile:

feedtime were on aberrant and then were reissed by Rough Trade.
Avatar 1:29pm Cecile:

I like that Jerry is still up with today's sounds. :D
Avatar 1:30pm Cheri Pi:

Of course C, that's right.
Avatar 1:30pm Polk Biggins:

Hi Diane. Hello people of the Internet. Enjoying the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Andrew Waterloo:

I think Astronomy Domine is one of the most intense songs going.
Avatar 1:31pm InBrkly:

I know feedtime from the subpop reissues. Mark Arm gives them a lot of love.
Avatar 1:31pm Cheri Pi:

Just reading on Eyehate God's wiki the other day: Eyehategod have noted Melvins, Carnivore, The Obsessed, Discharge, Black Flag, Corrosion of Conformity, Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Confessor and Saint Vitus[2] as key influences
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Mike East:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Whoops....maybe should've inserted a bleep in there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Rich in Washington:

Feedtime were one of the essential bands of that ugly, atonal 80s sound (Big Black, Buttholes, Birthday Party, Scratch Acid, Cop Shoot Cop, (early Swans), etc.)
Avatar 1:33pm Chris from DC:

CP, there have been a few bands influenced in turn by Eyehategod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Rich in Washington:

JERRY: KGON is still around, still stuck 20 years in the past today. Now they will play Nirvana
  1:36pm Paulie Bearer:

Tell that bum to get some coffee, and speak audibly!
Avatar 1:37pm Cecile:

I have loved feedtime since 1986. Such a great band.
Avatar 1:38pm Jim:

spoken like a true jerk, paul.

Avatar 1:39pm InBrkly:

The only music that makes me feel stoned are the first 2 Earth albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Nivarna rules!
Avatar 1:39pm Cecile:

ha! Love the FM reference.
I tend to like dub more than reggae, too.

Digging the Dr. Allmantado
Avatar 1:40pm Cecile:

Avatar 1:41pm InBrkly:

Love Love!
Avatar 1:41pm Cheri Pi:

I had to school Mr. CP the younger on dub recently- he thought i was joking when I corrected him and said, we're listening to dub not slowed down reggae. and I said it mean. LOVE!
Avatar 1:41pm Cheri Pi:

Oh Jerry, you are preaching to the choir now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm common:

LOVE love
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm fred:

@Cecile: I'm totally with you there, only more extreme: I love dub, can't stand reggae. Not even trying to find a reason, it's a visceral thing
Avatar 1:44pm InBrkly:

This reminds me that there was supposed to be a lost love album released last year but I never heard anything about it again after that.
Avatar 1:45pm Jim:

Joe Coffee sucks..(Hi Paul)
Avatar 1:45pm Cecile:

I like ska and early reggae. And just about anything Burning Spear ever did
  1:45pm Paulie Bearer:

Aw,shucks....You're the ginchiest,Mr.A...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Rich in Washington:

DIANE: If you're still entertaining questions from the peanut gallery: JERRY: what do you think of the upcoming Satyricon documentary?
Avatar 1:52pm Cheri Pi:

I bet Jerry would like Kandia Crazy-Horse's writing and singing.
Avatar 1:52pm DTErrico:

F-Yeah, love The Germs!!!

Nice Gomez you got there brother Pappy.
Avatar 2:14pm Polk Biggins:

This set is gnarly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm fred:

@dinatekno: Maybe Diane should launch a line of neck braces for us old codgers. There's a market there... I would support that right about now

@Cheri Pi: I spent a long time wishing those pesky floors would scrub themselves. Alas, today I acknowledged it wasn't to be, and did it instead of these lazy slobs.
Avatar 2:24pm Cheri Pi:

does everyone have their Hawkwind concert tickets I hope?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

For a split second I thought we were going to hear Stones' 200 Light Years.. but this is way better.
Avatar 2:25pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I was on them tickets the moment they sprang from the womb, followed by a levitating afterbirth of stars & nebulae...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Whosondephone:

Reminds me of the Moody Blues and Jethro Tull.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm fred:

Hawkwind aged better than I thought they would. I won't see them though. Not even sure when they play around here, but I'm sure it'll be way beyond what I can afford
Avatar 2:27pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I've been hooked on HW since maybe age 10, seems like they might be finally getting some recognition in the states for the first time since that '74 (?) tour. Thanks to this re-issue & such. Good time to come back to the states.
Avatar 2:28pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@fred: tickets for DC were in the 20-25 range i think. Not horribly horrible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm fred:

@RTD: I came to HW through Moorcock, they outlasted my interest in his books. Unfortunately, I expect that range to inflate to around €50, that's usually the rate around here. I'll keep an eye out in case of a good surprise. Though I'll be spending next Saturday on a 9-hours Zorn-fest, I will probably regret those euros when they're gone
Avatar 2:38pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@fred: ah, so my aforementioned 20-25 were $USD. Haven't seen Brock & co. since '89, so I'm stupidly happy about all this. Some of Moorcock still appeals (Cornelius) but much of it hasn't been touched since teenage days.

This whole show is one for the altar of yum-yum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm fred:

@RTD: To my growing dismay, there seems to be less and less room in Paris for gigs between €5 and €50. I'll stick with the former, but this situation sucks

My problem with Moorcock is that he /frequenly/ revises subsequent printings of his work. I don't want to buy the same book 3 times.
