Is microtonal music worth stopping cooking, washing hands, and going into other room to comment? Yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm G:

I hear the world of echoes in this one.
Avatar 9:26pm Dave Mandl:

Personally, I've never cooked. But I'd say definitely yes.
Avatar 9:41pm Droll:

That 2%, is that measured in time, or track counts?
Avatar 9:43pm Dave Mandl:

Hmmm...good question. Time, I guess. This is only 5 1/2 minutes, so I think I'm OK.
Avatar 9:43pm Dave Mandl:

Acid Mothers Temple next. I think I'm OK calling them not-RnR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm G:

Maybe? -- If it wouldn't pass a Beavis and Butthead approval test, it is not plain vanilla RnR
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm fleep:

Melting Paraiso is great on top of ravioli. If you cook.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm G:

"this is some weird shit, Beav" doesn't pass that metric :)

Too complicated for me. But the ELP was enough.

Avatar 10:03pm Dave Mandl:

I'd be really really famous now.
Avatar 10:05pm Dave Mandl:

For those of you who didn't get the obscure reference...RR quoted King Lear, from the radio broadcast that got included in I Am the Walrus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm G:

some of us were sick enough to know that :p :p
Avatar 10:09pm Dave Mandl:

I'd be surprised if you didn't. We've got some seriously knowledgeable listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the obscure Beatles, from the obscure 20th Century, from the obscscure planet Earth...
- G will give us the entire Shakespearean context...
Avatar 10:12pm Dave Mandl:

That's the band Yoko Ono used to be in, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- sort of, AvantGuardians. Track was in fact more like 'Two Virgins' than 'Walrus'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm G:

@RR63: my rep is already bad enough, i should demur :p
Avatar 10:21pm dk:

lord, rhys chatham + oneida. that's going to be a hell of a show. i think i gave myself chronic tinnitus just imagining it.
Avatar 10:22pm Dave Mandl:

Right, you want to be selling earplugs at that show. You'll make a fortune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- relation of Sunny Murray to Sun Ra? Last Poets?
Avatar 10:32pm Dave Mandl:

He's best known as the drummer in Albert Ayler's band.
Avatar 10:33pm Dave Mandl:

I don't know of any connection to Sun Ra or Last Poets, but it's possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Ta.
...Think I read somewhere Hendrix recorded w/ the Last Poets very late for him...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- just reminded me of Last Poets...
Avatar 10:36pm Dave Mandl:

It's possible about Hendrix. Every year it seems another set of tapes surfaces. I don't know how he did it.
Avatar 10:37pm Dave Mandl:

Murray's playing with Ayler is fantastic. Completely original, like Ayler's playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Hendrix had 3&1/2 years (as a famous person)!
- Buddy Holly died @ 22.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm pacific standard simon:

Jimi Hendrix with The Last Poets

It's probably down there in the FMU vinyl library.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cheers! That's it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- it's been noted that the backwards drums on 'Are You Experienced?' are quite prescient of HipHop 'scratching'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& the scratchy percussive sounds on guitar too, in fact...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm pacific standard simon:

Holy smoke, I love this record!
Avatar 10:57pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: The Winkies? That was just reissued.
Avatar 10:58pm Dave Mandl:

Best known for the cover, probably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm pacific standard simon:

Yep. I bought it from an import bin in '76, and hoarded it through all the Winkies-less digital years.
Avatar 11:02pm Dave Mandl:

Yeah, it's not a record you see very often. I was surprised to see the reissue. But glad it's available.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm pacific standard simon:

I edited the "Mailman" section out of the Dylan cover and used it for an all-cover-version mix CD of Highway 61!
Avatar 11:07pm Droll:

I noticed they've stopped making computers with CD/DVD drives in them. I wonder how much longer before the typical home has no CD/DVD player at all. I can't imagine people having nostalgia for CD and supporting the format for another decade.
  11:09pm bloopy:

i like the sound when dave stacks the cds.. :)
Avatar 11:09pm Droll:

A picture of the members of the band? Freudian slip?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm pacific standard simon:

Droll, what are you talking about? My brand new Dell and Acer both have DVD drives.
Avatar 11:11pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Haha. Yes, true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm G:

pic of the band's members
Avatar 11:13pm Dave Mandl:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm G:

i have a march 2013 laptop that came with a dvd drive, not an extra. eventually i suppose they will go the way of the floppy disk drive of the 90s. not quite yet...
Avatar 11:13pm Droll:

PSS, No tablet or phone has one, and very few laptops do. The trend is very clear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm pacific standard simon:

The Winkies definitely had a gay-ish slant to them ("Twilight Masquerade"); the cover may have been the designer's interpretation of that. I think it sabotaged the record. Also don't think the band "members" posed for it.
Avatar 11:15pm Droll:

G, When CD goes obsolete, the only record stores left will just sell records. How poetic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I've heard about what Droll's talking about...
- Saw the Charlie Haden Quartet give a free show - & he recalled how in the OrnetteColeman days they put 'Free Jazz' on the marquee - & people lined up expecting not to have to pay...
- Compare that cover to 'Sticky Fingers' by Warhol...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm G:

an older relative got a virus and asked me for help. she said no CDs in stores said you could load from the CD -- you needed net access. but the virus was preventing net access, so i had to download antivirus to another comp, and get it on the infected comp with a flash drive. what good did her CD drive do her? none.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm pacific standard simon:

But that cover was conservative compared to its contemporary, Roxy Music's Country Life, which was covered up, but sold anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm pacific standard simon:

Tablets and phones don't have room for a CD drive and have never had them. I haven't seen a laptop that didn't have a CD drive -- my Acer certainly has one.
Avatar 11:21pm Droll:

Software is moving towards the subscription model, which makes users totally dependent on vendors. As you note, you already need a working computer to fix a computer now... The software treadmill and defective bloatware have been around for about a decade... It's all too depressing to even consider.
Avatar 11:23pm Droll:

PSS, Apple stopped putting DVD drives on Macs laptops over a year ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- reminds me of discussing new Liberace flick on latest Irwin's comments: Irwin thot it well done but a Gay OD (my words) for a hetero - I commented that I felt (a little) the same about 'Velvet Goldmine' about 70's GlitterRock by Todd Haynes. My hangup - thot it (VG) really good anyhow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm pacific standard simon:

Well, there you go... right into the Mac Vs. the rest of the world war.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- &/or Mac leading (by force?)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- digital-optical is perhaps not ideal for mechanical reasons (skipping CDs anyone?)...They want us on their Cloud though, yeah...
Avatar 11:31pm Droll:

Apple is a Red Herring. CD/DVD, and physical media in general, is rapidly losing ground to streaming and download. It's more convenient for consumers and easier for IP owners to control. Modern computer form factors don't even have peripherals for physical media. CD/DVD is not coming back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm pacific standard simon:

I don't doubt that CDs/DVDs will eventually be displaced by another recording medium (solid state, probably); I was objecting to this premature statement by Droll:

"I noticed they've stopped making computers with CD/DVD drives in them."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm YETI BOB:

Droll: All currently made computers have USB ports & USB peripherals are readily available and cheap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- when Music 1st went Digital - it was my 1st thot that why not have a big library somewhere & just go 'pay per view' (listen)? It's the obvious thing to do.
- Yeah - there are USB ports to plug a CD drive into - but I heard it too that computers - *some* computers - Macs I do believe - were already being made w/out drives built-in standard.
Avatar 11:36pm Droll:

I agree "Stopped" was too strong, however tablets are used as computers and are replacing the "traditional" computer market, and none of those devices have CD/DVD built-in. Yes, there will be peripherals for a long time, but as far as building it in as standard equipment, that's not on the roadmap.
Swag For Life Member 11:40pm 12539:

I say, Put the "Big Library" in Jersey City, NJ, and make the 'pay per listen' a voluntary donation. I think it might work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

12539: FMU now *does* take up the better part of my listening time!
- W/ staggering accessibility
- Listening Time becomes what it's All About.
- & what I really hope is that it swings over to Sound Quality as a priority: The 20th Century was about bigger & bigger sound - than Digital hit, & it got more & more Compressed - exactly the Opposite thing! - to make small files & go over the Net. So as storage & bandwidth get 'easier' - I hope we go from MP3ish to MP4ish (CD quality), or even better...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm pacific standard simon:

Could be, 12539... could be...

I'll say this, though: There's no way I would have gotten sucked into the WFMU vortex as deeply as I have if I hadn't been able to burn shows onto CDs and play them at work on a MP3-enabled CD boombox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm YETI BOB:

when i was a kid i'd record WFMU onto C-90 cassettes and listen to them on a sony walkman while i was mowing lawns. those were the days. (and i wish i hadn't gotten rid of all those cassettes!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeti: Analog FMU!
Avatar 11:50pm Droll:

PSS, You burn CDs of WFMU shows?! I will not question your dedication to the CD format again.
  11:56pm trish:

Remember the cd markeing lie? "They'll never break. They'll never skip." Reviews had teens whipping them around like frisbees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm G:

never drink the koolaid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & the 16-bit sampling rate was almost arbitrary
...(as you know) all the early Mastering pure crap...
Swag For Life Member 11:58pm 12539:

Thanks, Dave.
Avatar 11:59pm Droll:

If you put one in a microwave that's quite a spectacle -- they're not so tough.

See you next week, DM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm pacific standard simon:

Rockin' Dave M.
Avatar 12:00am Dave Mandl:

Hey, thanks, all. Have a great week. See you next Sunday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...they made gagillion$, then kept the price @ $17, sold all the record companies to MultiNational Lawyers, & wondered why they didn't sell any CDs/Music!!...
