Hi Bill & the usual suspects!

Morning dubbayuh, and everyone else! Here we are, Saturday again.... or is it STILL last Saturday? It's like a sauna in here, taking a steam and spinning it as per usual. Stick around, and cheer up Maan (the band that is!)

H-O-T here in Noo Yawk.

What up KP? Yeah I think there was a memo about the AC being out. Fear not, I have all this equipment around to keep me toasty.

w41:

Same here. Hang on, it's only 7 months until winter.
  3:24am
KP:

I don't know if it's typical apt living but there are no thermostats here. It's always hot and you open windows or use AC to regulate

By the way, last time when we talked about Beefheart covers... I forgot to mention The White Stripes doing Party Of Special Things To Do... Not that I love White Stripes very much, but this. cover. rocks. Also the first song I've heard written and/or recorded by the Captain.

Yipe! Waking up to Captain Beefheart?! OK!!
Avatar 3:32am

@W41 I've heard that one by the Stripes - not my favorite, but I was glad to hear a deconstruction of that tune.... take that!!!

@W41 - Not a bad backhanded request, considering it's probbably the best Beefheart tune from that period
@Jay Legs are sore, but good and usable

When the Grass Roots first came out they were considered hip and played Fillmore West. "Live For Today," their first hit, was pretty cool. Lot of personnel changes after that.

My in-laws are huge Grass Roots fans. They traveled all around to see them. They were devastated. I hate to say it but it was like a situation comedy listening to them.
Avatar 3:57am

I like a couple of their tunes. They remind me of my formative years and the golden years of top 40 - for me anyway.

The Replica is still the most expensive record in my collection, I bought it for $500. The vinyl here I think is at least 2-3x more expensive than in the US. I don't know why I didn't look it up on ebay or Amazon in the first place. I guess I was really, really wasted that day so I bought this then-a-very-expensive-for-me thing. I think I figured this thing will pay off in the way of attracting young females. Boy was I wrong! :)
Avatar 4:30am

The Replica? As in Trout Mask?

Sure.

Just a crap week, Bill. I think its the frigging weather here. No route map.

@w41 There are hardened Beefheart fans that have trouble with TMR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31am

Am I hearing right?
Mariachi music with a Balkan beat and singing of Colombian Cumbia.
Sounds great.
Avatar 4:32am

No problem brother, sorry it took me long to get to it.
Avatar 4:34am

@Brian you mean like they don't get it? Well, that's hard to imagine. Is their favourite album something like Clear Spot and the next one?
Avatar 4:34am
Andy in Berlin:

What it this? Wall of Voodoo played on a toy piano?
Avatar 4:36am
Bill Mac:

I want a Scandivanian Radio - whoooooaooooh. That was starting to hypnotize me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38am
Brian in UK:

@w41 well I think so. Hard to believe. Only from the few addicts I have spoken to. I remember it coming out & John Peel playing it. It was to hard work for me at least. Did he mellow over the years?
Avatar 4:40am
Jay/London:

@ Brian in UK yeah weather crap very depressing .. but we have bill to cheer us up
Avatar 4:41am
Andy in Berlin:

@ Brian - Yeah, John Peel was a big supporter. My personal favorite was Lick My Decals Off Baby but the later band with Gary Lucas was really good too.
Avatar 4:42am
Andy in Berlin:

@ Jay - pouring over here too
Avatar 4:43am
w41:

@Brian well, yeah, mellowness peaking on Unconditionally Guaranteed. but after that, starting with Bat Chain Puller, he's back on track again... I guess
  4:48am
Emile:

Just arriving, crap missed Hybrid Kids. Luckily there are archives.
Avatar 4:49am
Bill Mac:

Hey Emile... btw you can download the CD that came off of from Free Music Archives...
  4:50am
Emile:

Thanks, Bill. Anyone seen the current Residents tour? Heard mixed things. Seeing them in 2 weeks. Not sold out, which I find kind of surprising.
Avatar 4:52am
Bill Mac:

Mirror Man was my 1st Beefheart listen - I hated it at first, but it didn't stop me from buying all of his material. I had to work on Trout Mask as a whole, but it had an interesting feel and there were more than a few 'catchy' tunes to latch on to. I didn't see the Band til the "Bat Chain Puller" tour.
  4:54am
Emile:

I still think Lick My Decals Off, Baby is my fave CB.
Avatar 4:57am
Bill Mac:

I saw Residents a couple years ago. It was interesting although a bit too high concept for me (whatever that means) but I prefer them playing their 'hits'. Decals is a great album but I've probably listened to almost every other Beefheart album more (except for Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans...)
Avatar 4:58am
Jay/London:

@ andy In Berlin it's got to get warmer soon !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00am
Stanley:

Thanks for the Gnod, Bill. Makes up for not being able to get to Glasgow last week.
Avatar 5:01am
Bill Mac:

This is great stuff, I'd play more of it if the songs weren't so long
Avatar 5:02am
Andy in Berlin:

@ Jay - oh it's 20 degrees over here, just grey and rainy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04am
Stanley:

They bring out the inner freak in me.
Avatar 5:05am
Jay/London:

@ Andy about 12 degrees here just gray got the heating back on .. oh loving this track bill please play more of them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05am
Stanley:

This is the best.
Avatar 5:05am
Andy in Berlin:

@Bill - Lick My Decals Off Baby was my first and I saw them soon after that. They were so amazingly tight. I saw them again about a year later at Town Hall. Van Morrison opened for them. That was for The Spotlight Kid. Also great.
Avatar 5:06am
nah:

Not bad, not bad at all!
Avatar 5:06am
w41:

wow, you're so lucky to see the Band live! and old, also :)
Avatar 5:07am
w41:

*to have seen, of course
  5:07am
Emile:

I hear you about the Residents, Bill. Saw them in about 1996 or so and the visuals were quite something... On CB, the playing on I Love You, You Big Dummy is so chaotically tight, if that makes sense.
Avatar 5:09am
Bill Mac:

That's cool Andy... I saw them after all the original members left... still, you gotta check out the Drumbo led magic band. I wish they didn't a few more Decals tunes in their set.
Avatar 5:10am
Andy in Berlin:

@ W41 - are you saying I'm lucky to be old?! :)
@ Emile - they would literally be playing something and then in the space of one note they'd be playing something completely different.
Avatar 5:12am
w41:

No, that's independent
Avatar 5:12am
Andy in Berlin:

@ Bill - what's the Beefheart song where Gary Lucas plays that incredible solo? Can you play that? I heard Gary on the radio saying that Captain Beefheart whistled it to him on the phone.
  5:13am
Emile:

The Melvins are indeed amazing, since A Senile Animal they have really stepped it up, just great.
Avatar 5:16am
w41:

I think I know the answer, but since the question was to Bill...
