Avatar 9:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - VU's 1st album has such a wide impact - could say it's been well-absorbed - but it's like covering The Beatles...well, this's just stating the obvious...
- Could say something about Britt Ekland's attributes - but gratuitousness aside - yeah - kinda puts Paganism in a negative light - but great flick....

Loads of Wicker Man postings today, including a Muppet Wicker Man video. The original is totally worth seeing. It is practically a musical. Wicker Man nerd trivia: Britt was only shown from the front; she refused to show her backside and had a double instead.

'soviet valves': to those not guitarheads: guitar amp tubes are environmentally nasty to produce - so a lot are made in Russia & China - if that's what they mean...

I had a friend 20 years ago who had a Sovtek amp -- since I'm a non-guitarhead, is this related?

What's this about tubes not being environmentally safe? They're just glass and metal -- way less toxic and easier to recycle than any transistor.
Tubes = Goodness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Barkevious Shabazz:

What is Jack Dangers doin these days?
Avatar 10:25pm BadGuyZero:

@efd: Ten-four. I just returned from my local record store and they still have copies of it.
Avatar 10:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

All received info., Droll. I cannot afford. Are there not certain gasses in them?
Avatar 10:31pm Droll:

RRN, In fact there are vacuums inside of those tubes.
Avatar 10:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- One Google result:
VACUUM TUBES - Green Bullet Mic's
greenbulletmics.com/VACUUM_TUBES.html - Cached
The only countries producing vacuum tubes today are Russia, China, and Japan.
Avatar 10:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Makes sense Droll!
- This is what I've always heard. Urban myth? A tube is more 'mechanical' to produce? Otherwise, labor cost is the reason?
- Tubes distort in the right way: they are a little fire. Only Guitarists want them - & a few Audiophiles (add 'warmth' to digital signals).
- Another thing commonly accepted: tubes accent even harmonics, & solid state the odd ones...All maybe a bit Spinal Tap for the Board here?...
Avatar 10:41pm Droll:

RRN, It's all about power, portability, and convenience: tubes cannot run on battery power or fit in a cell phone.
Avatar 10:42pm BadGuyZero:

I saw Wax Idols and TV Ghost when I was in Chicago last week. It was fantastic!
Avatar 10:45pm fearson:

this is a jam!
Avatar 10:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yeah - they need a lot of maintenance - like a noisy Harley that only works when it's straining; some guitarists use digital amps for reliability - w/ a box w/ *one tube* for the warmth...One recording artist told me that if he records w/ analog tape, he doesn't need to worry about 'adding warmth' later!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm efd:

BGZ, cool! I'm really looking forward to their sessions here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm pacific standard simon:

Well. heck, just hold the mixer between your thighs, for added warmth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I loved that Wax Idols track. Really great sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm fleep:

We used to change out TV tubes at the drugstore: www.tdpri.com...
Avatar 10:48pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Analog tape is a little too life-like, as made apparent in this video:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm efd:

Hi Wendy! The whole album is great, as was the last one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm pacific standard simon:

I remember those from the Thrifty Drug Store, fleep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Hey Evan! Cool, I will have to see if one of my local record stores has or can get for me. Yay!
Avatar 10:51pm Holly in NC:

Super show so far efd (like it's gonna slack off ;-)), and can't wait for next week's live sets!
Avatar 10:55pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I want to know what year did tubes at the drugstore stop being common. This is central to the kind of stuff I keep track of and try to report on.

At my age I remember shopping at Woolworth's, but not for tubes.
  10:59pm JTKMDNY:

Evan: good music!!!

Avatar 11:04pm Danne D:

LOL - Evan's entire show is going to consist of the Ticket Giveaway Segment Title :)
  11:05pm PB:

Speaking of "dogs", I hear that the new Stooges album is a real dog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm pacific standard simon:

I remember tube testers as late as the early '70s. I have a feeling that, as coin operated photocopiers became more in-demand, store managers found the motivation to phase out the tube-testers.
Avatar 11:06pm Danne D:

I saw Corn Mo open up for TMBG once.

I will not be calling to win that particular prize.
Avatar 11:06pm Danne D:

"3" - the one with Keith Emerson in it??! :)

Avatar 11:07pm Danne D:

(and yes, as a matter of fact I do have a copy of that album - and yeah it has one of the more painful covers of "Eight Miles High" on it)
Avatar 11:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Well - as I see it - digital has *all* the advantages (clarity, compressible, programmable) - except this: Instead of representing the Soundwave analogously (analog) - it Samples it - taking Sections of it & converting it into numbers (digits-digital):
- You don't get a curvy soundwave, but a jagged thing w/ edges. The detail of the edges will depend on your Sampling Rate.
- Another problem w/ digital is the changing Formats, of course. Every medium has its' own qualities, in the end...

- Boris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Stevel:

It is the Red Fish that I love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm G:

@Danne: He's still got a little way to go before beating the world's longest song title, Christine Lavin's "Regretting What I Said to You When You Called Me 11:00 On a Friday Morning to Tell Me that at 1:00 Friday Afternoon You're Gonna Leave Your Office, Go Downstairs, Hail a Cab to Go Out to the Airport to Catch a Plane to Go Skiing in the Alps for Two Weeks, Not that I Wanted to Go With You, I Wasn't Able to Leave Town, I'm Not a Very Good Skier, I Couldn't Expect You to Pay My Way, But After Going Out With You for Three Years I DON'T Like Surprises!! Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm fleep:

Even chopped up into digital bits, this show sound great, EFD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Julie:

Avatar 11:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...since you can't copyright song titles (a billion 'I Love Yous'...) - you could have another song w/ that title!; as long as it was completely different...
Avatar 11:15pm Danne D:

Avatar 11:22pm Loretta:

  11:22pm Rickwaukee:

I'm having trouble just doing the 33-1/3
Avatar 11:23pm Droll:

The difference between analog and digital is that when analog is overdriven it bends, when digital is overdriven it breaks. If you're listening to a MP3 or CD, tubes don't matter, but if you're plugging your guitar straight into it or summing 48 tracks, tubes make all the difference in the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm G:

do the 16 then
Avatar 11:24pm Danne D:

Btw, according to the accuplaylist search engine, there's only one WFMU DJ that has ever played anything off of Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Love Beach" - anyone want to venture a guess at who this DJ is? (they are on the current schedule, that's my one clue)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm pacific standard simon:

Station Manager Ken?
Avatar 11:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - the difference between Production & Reproduction there...
Avatar 11:25pm KP:

Avatar 11:25pm Droll:

G, When I was a youth I bought a transcription-speed turntable (16RPM) just to play back Rush records at half speed so I could learn the riffs exactly. Yes and ELP sounded the same at half speed.
Avatar 11:25pm Danne D:

good guess Simon, but no. I'll give a couple more folks a shot but will reveal before the end :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm G:

@Danne: No embarrassing the nice DJ :p
  11:26pm john:

Danne, a hint? Was it played ironically?
Avatar 11:26pm KP:

Does Glen Jones count as a DJ?
Avatar 11:26pm Danne D:

I don't think it was played ironically :) But I cannot get in the mind of an FMU DJ :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm efd:

nose/face you guys.
Avatar 11:27pm KP:

Everything is played ironically.
Avatar 11:27pm Danne D:

@KP Yes, but no KP as his playlists don't get put into the accuplaylist I don't think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm G:

Do I remember this Love Beach issue being discussed on a board once? Anyway, I bet Danne's point is that it's present company, and I am sure Danne has him kvelling :)
Avatar 11:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...was there ever another intention to 16 RPM?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm pacific standard simon:

Trying to think of an FMU DJ MORE perverted than Ken...
Avatar 11:28pm Danne D:

Anyway, rather than destroy the rest of the comments with this one I will say that it was a DJ filling in for Jonesy :) A DJ who happens to be on the air right now. EFD - the original Prog Rock King :D

Bufferin' -- for when your slow net connection gives you a headache
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm G:

Avatar 11:29pm steve:

Droll - to be fair, putting a good tube preamp between your mp3 player and your speakers can still do some magic!
Avatar 11:29pm Danne D:

Yeah, I got wondering when I tried to find "3" in the accuplaylist search. Alas, that "3" hasn't been played on FMU (at least on an accuplaylist show)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm Barkevious Shabazz:

I had a turntable with no needle. Even Hemispheres sounded good.
  11:30pm Rickwaukee:

Kimberly-Clark will smite ye, Kleenex Girl Wonder
Avatar 11:30pm Droll:

DD, I dunno about that, DJ Donna Summer (Jason Forrest) once played Tarkus in it's entirety in the middle of a breakcore set. That's what hooked me on FMU some 13 years ago.
Avatar 11:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'That's not Buffering Issues - that's our Programming.'
- Made me think of Dave Mandl & Comments, actually...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm pacific standard simon:

My junior high school library had a ton of 16 RPM "audiobook" LPs -- that was how you listened to Edgar Allan Poe stories, or whatever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm G:

@Droll: I just adjusted the speed down on the turntable and retuned the guitar to match :p

Another fun method was transfer the track top reel-to-reel, and cut the speed in half to make things one octave lower and half the velocity :)

So... there must be a Horseface US, right?
Avatar 11:41pm Danne D:

At least Belock finally made a transaction. It was kinda embarrassing having him kick all our asses w/o even changing his roster once. He's still in 1st though. EFD is running in 4th currently.

Simultaneously following a very ugly Giants/Diamondbacks game. Brandon Crawford is this year's model.

Anybody hear Irwin's comment this afternoon:
"My cat came out of the closet today."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm pacific standard simon:

Irwin's a shit-stirrer, and I don't think he has a problem with that.
Avatar 11:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

KP: Yeah.
Avatar 11:51pm Danne D:

Btw, welcome back Hanley Ramirez :) 4/7 already
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Stevel:

KP: Need to catch up with that. Busy days are not good radio days, unless you're 'trapped' at the computer.

Heard kewl YYY's/Karen O. stuff lately. Pleased by that.
Avatar 11:52pm Danne D:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm G:

My cat is always in the goddam closet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm pacific standard simon:

@G - put yer damn dirty socks in the hamper, already!
Avatar 11:56pm Droll:

Irwin? That quiet guy who keeps his opinions to himself? I can't imagine he'd instigate anything. Is he really still on air? I thought they just gave that old coot a hairbrush to talk into for three hours.

Great show, Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm G:

He saw a camera and came out to pose on my shoulder. And then back in the closet again. Seriously, he can monitor all the comings and goings from a cushy spot right next to the toilet paper inventory. Hisses if you open the door on him.

...The Polls all show that younger people - Aquarian Age Knowledge people - all acknowledge that people are born w/ their sexual preferences
- & all the older people of the Piscean Age - the age of Belief & Religion don't acknowledge it.
...It's a Civil Rights issue & it's all over bit the shouting, as expression goes...
