A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

The most willfully silly thing I've come across recently is the Twitter account @CrimerShow, a sort of spoof TV cop show script. It's utter genius, if you get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Magda:

Thanks I will have to add that to my twitter feed.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am yayson:

man, every week, trouble killing it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Magda:

I always like extra firm brown tofu as a replacement to cold cuts. Will try that with tofu the next time I cook it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Adrian in London:

Ah man, hope you feel better soon Trouble. I've been coughing and so on for a week. On the plus side, I've been able to sing along with Mark Lanegan and Lee Marvin tunes, which was a bonus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Mike East:

@revrabbit: I season with salt right after it gets out of the oil, then add it to whatever sauce I have on hand. Today its thai red curry (jarred) which I will modify with some of my own seasonings and veggies.
I ate the burnt toast, it was still good (mom's easter bread). the tofu is for my wife's dinner because I won't be home.

A month of Lonnie Holley! Trouble, you are unstoppable! Mornin' evryone.
Avatar 9:39am dcp:

if you fry in butter, it's extra good and can be used in place of meat in most recipes--even without sauce.
Avatar 9:40am northguineahills:

This weekend I marinated my tofu w/ salsa verde, vegan steak sauce & Worcestershire sauce, w salt & pepper, a little cumin, and a sneeze of coriander. Then I fried it as a crumble.

Soft tofu does that too. I have used it as a replacement in lasagna recipe. Tricked a few people thinking it was cheese.
Avatar 9:49am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Tempeh rocks like hell. 'tis the protein-rich meat of god.
Avatar 9:51am northguineahills:

I use tofu for my pizza cheese. Just a little garlic & onion powder and salt (mainly b/c cheese doesn't love me back).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Mike East:

I've got some tempeh in the fridge. Saving it for when I have a bit more time to focus on it. any suggestions?
Avatar 9:52am dcp:

I also put nutritional yeast in everything. I haven't had the best luck with tempeh... Make a lot of my own SEITAN!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Magda:

Has anyone used red miso paste? I need a recipe to try it in other than miso soup?
Avatar 9:55am dcp:

well, I just get the box of vital wheat gluten, mix it with veggie broth and some spices, boil it up with veggies, broth. Then you can eat or fry it up. I use it in tacos these days.
Avatar 9:56am northguineahills:

I've only used red miso paste w/ udon soups, although I'm going to attempt to try it the next time I bake kale chips.

Avatar 10:17am Trouble:

per lonnie's suggestion we are breaking it up across 5 tuesdays in april! stay tuned for more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Mike East:

if u mix red miso with sake and sugar (and maybe mirin, too) and heat it to cook off the alcohol, u get a sauce that ca be used as a marinade and glaze.
Avatar 10:19am Lucas:

@Mike East: Is sake expensive out of japan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Mike East:

yes, quite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am tim from champaign:

Oh, that's right. This is turning in to a cliff hanger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Mike East:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If you cook miso, you can lose the good things living in it
- but cookin' is cookin'.
Avatar 10:22am Cheri Pi:

Be careful cooking with Miso, don't boil it or it loses it's health properties. simmer only.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Magda:

Thanks Cheri Pi. Will try it out. Thanks Mike. I'm excited to try out the marinade.
Avatar 10:24am Cheri Pi:

I've also heard that you can coat a block of tofu with miso and let it "age" in the fridge for a few weeks (I think) and this transforms it into a substitute for blue-cheese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Magda:

I bought from the East Meets West Market in Bloomfield. It is still sitting in my fridge full of nutrients. ;D East Meets West Market is a great place to get various Asian ingredients. The place has an entire aisle dedicated to ramen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Magda:

Thank you for the foodie banter, I have to get back to work and not be hungry.
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

well, I am ready to sing the praises of organic, grass fed beef. I liked it before, but now I have a cheap source of it thanks to my oddball grocery.
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

I think they buy stuff from distributors and caterers right before it turns. Plenty of time to cook or freeze it.
Avatar 10:32am Cecile:

Mike and Lucas, you can get rotgut sake at liquor stores (or groceries if you live in a civilized state) and that's fine for marinades.
Avatar 10:33am Cecile:

I would never heat a good sake. Those are best icy-cold.
Avatar 10:35am Cecile:

my favorite miso is this crazy lumpy barley stuff I get at my pan-Asian grocery.
Avatar 10:36am Phelger Nank:

Hai, so desu! Heating is to mask the taste of bad sake. Good sake goes down smoove as a Billy Dee Williams malt liquor.

Avatar 10:38am Cecile:

They have their purposes. Hot sake is great in the winter with noodles. Cold sake is great with sashimi and sushi. if you are cheap, drink hot sake - I've gotten refills for being nice to staff and going "let the chef go crazy" when ordering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sake is God's apology for Bad Karaoke.
Avatar 10:39am Cecile:

Tim - we have a fine sake bar in town. I'm not impressed by their mains, but they have some tofu and rib appetizers that are delightful. Also, all the different kinds of sake. They carry a lot and also brew their own!

Avatar 10:44am Cecile:

is it really not the same song twice? or never the same way twice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am tim from champaign:

@Cecile - That sounds good. I'm definitely going request the "Twin Cities vetted by Cecile" tour guide for grub, alcohol, records and art the next time I'm up that way.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am tim from champaign:

Cecile - Sorry to hear about the parental situation. Me and Tracy are dealing with a lot of mama drama from both sides.

Parq - Thanks for the recommendation. I visited Mt Rainier in 1985 and would love to see it again. Also, Mt St Helens. It was barren, ashy and muddy when I last saw it. The Rainier Beer billboards made a serious impression on me too as a 12 year old.

Avatar 11:07am Cecile:

I think she's talented and dresses super-cute.
When she finds her voice and stops trying to react against her siste, I think she will make great music. She needs to stay far away from the Pitchfork crew for sure.
Avatar 11:09am Cecile:

She was hanging out with Chromeo for a while. I love them, so I thought that was a good career choice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...for that matter, Prince might've been a lot better off w/out MTV - but so much for revisionist fantasy...
Avatar 11:12am Cecile:

Well, she's in her early 20s, she has a long way to go in her career. And while Pitchfork can make some performers, there are plenty of people who have made it without them or with less than stellar notices from them.
