Hey Doca. Yes indeed.

cool, i've liked it. great interplay between the bass and the reeds, as usual on his works.
Avatar 9:07pm
Dave Mandl:

Yup, agreed. Very tight, as they used to say.

Wendy del Formaggio:

Hey Dave! I'm glad I'm home and doing some computer work so I can tune in. Happy Sunday to you.
Avatar 9:09pm
doca:

what i like about contemporary jazz in general is that's like some sort of long argument (both a discussion and the exposition of an idea) and how the listener MUST have attention so to follow it and enjoy. even when the piece is not particularly difficult it always demands an intense listening.
Avatar 9:10pm
Dave Mandl:

Hola, Wendy. Welcome back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
BDR:

Hey, thanks for the head's-up on Deux Filles re-release. If you play a song, I'm curious which one you pick.
Avatar 9:14pm
Dave Mandl:

@BDR: Sure. I plan to play something from it. Not exactly sure which track, though.
Avatar 9:14pm
Dave Mandl:

@doca: Agreed. That Steve Coleman stuff moves fast. You've got to keep up.

- a couple favorite Zappa zaps :

...'Jazz isn't dead. It just smells funny'...

...'The manner in which Americans ''consume'' music has a lot to do
with leaving it on their coffee tables, or using it as wallpaper for their lifestyle'...
Avatar 9:17pm

Good thing I don't have a lifestyle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm

June? Ritual? Mysterious titles?

Not hard. Le secret du printemps.

I have lifestyle paint for that.
Avatar 9:31pm

@G: You're smarter than me.
Avatar 9:31pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Yeah - what I got from that Zappa is that for some of us Music is our very Center, not our peripheral Wallpaper (...& if it is, we call it 'Ambient')

- Wynton Marsalis emphasizes that Jazz is all about actually Listening to Each Other

- Cage makes point that How We Listen - which is what 'audition' really means - is (@ least?) as important as the What...

...There's the Painting, the Frame, the Room, the Museum~Architecture, the Community...

...Somewhere @ wfmu.org (Program header?) someone wrote that 'to God all Music is Crap' - but I dunno - I like to think of Shiva or Sarasvati digging it- because I don't have the discipline to Meditate! In Africa - Church is Dance...
Avatar 9:34pm

Guru Guru is certainly not crap - and a fun surprise!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
G:

"Not hard." is what you say before you give the answer to an Old Irish riddle. I was really just joking. Unusual for me, I know...
Avatar 9:40pm
Dave Mandl:

@G: I don't think it is Le Secret de Printemps, but what I know? My french is rotten.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Andrew Waterloo:

“Why is it so difficult for so many people to listen? Why do they start talking when there is something to hear? Do they have their ears not on the sides of their heads but situated inside their mouths so that when they hear something their first impulse is to start talking? The situation should be more normal, don’t you think?”
this is attributed to John Cage, but I remember Roland Kirk saying it.

If it's a ritual involving June and one can't puzzle it out, maybe it's not Le Sacre du Printemps but Le Secret du Printemps. I'm done footnoting, though :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Ha, I was having one of those "Is is WFMU, or is it broken?" moments for that whole song!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm

They did seem to freshen up the homepage slogan rotation right around marathon time, right Pete?
  9:52pm
P-90:

Hi Dave! So the CD player created a kind of random cut & paste remix of the track? Somewhere John Cage is smiling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I don't know. I don't think I have noticed one way or another.
Avatar 9:53pm

@UM: When that record came out (early '80s) I had no idea when it was recorded. Could have been '60s, '70s. A very unusual sound for a rock record.

My understanding is that by "no HTML" they mean "no < > tags, etc." Not "no links."

Great set, Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm

I don't mean to be coy, Rev. This stuff is on a most excellent blog that has had to start over numerous times and since links here have permanence, I could be responsible for providing the site with attention that could do it harm. So, I'll give anyone the link...I just want to be a little cautious with someone else' efforts.

Kenzo fixed a link-mangling bug for me the other day. 1) Kenzo never sleeps. 2) Kenzo fixed the website live, in less than an hour. 3) If Wikipedia allows apostrophe in a URL, that's good enough for Kenzo.

I wonder if Kenzo treats his real-life employer as well as garden-variety WFMU listeners.
