Avatar 12:10pm Cecile:

It made me sniffle. But all of them, except for maybe Ray Parker and Arrested Development make me sniffle. Eddie Kendricks was a bawlfest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm robyn:

hope you had a good time in austin and saw some great shows. it sounds like prince was pretty insane.

Cecile I just did a three day type design workshop. It was awesome ! Teachers were from U of Reading. I'm gonna make fonts !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm robyn:

aw, thx cecile, and thanks duane. @kata prince played some samsung/galaxy/blahblah show that no one could get into but it sounded awesome. www.pastemagazine.com...

Avatar 12:21pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

typographer, heal they serif.
Avatar 12:22pm Cecile:

this is a double-win here!!! JT and Four Tet!
Avatar 12:22pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

OUCH!
  12:22pm Patrick:

Duane!! I'm so glad your playing some J Tim. Love the new album!! Welcome back! Did you see the Artist in Austin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Caryn:

Feel for you, kata. I think my worst food mishap was when we had just had the sewage and water systems in our apartment building renovated. Went to strain my pasta, turned on the tap, and the water coming out of the tap and all over my pasta was a black, gunky mess. However, being a broke-ass student at the time, I just let the water run until it was clear and then washed the pasta off and ate it anyway.
Avatar 12:23pm Cecile:

robyn, Prince's politics are not that far removed from Michelle Shocked's these days.
Avatar 12:23pm Cecile:

*smacks the back of Turnip Druid's head*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Caryn:

@Cecile: true, but a bit of purple draping would've still been nice.
Avatar 12:24pm kata:

@Jan -- yes real fonts -- There's a free open source font making program called FontForge that we used in class. Not as fancy as Fontlab but does the job ! Super fun !
Avatar 12:24pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Hey, I've been in the biz a while. I've kerned the right to pun here & there...
Avatar 12:24pm Cecile:

That's true. And some four-hour funk jams reunite all political parties.
Avatar 12:25pm kata:

haha Turnip, good one ~
Avatar 12:25pm Cecile:

kata, gotta check that out.

Rev, I like your boldface style.
Avatar 12:25pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I use this program called "Glyphs" which I only have free because I was a beta tester way back...
Avatar 12:25pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Kata: You get bonus points in Valhalla if you include ligatures. Just sayin'...
Avatar 12:25pm Duane:

Prince played SXSW ..i'll talk about it on air!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm robyn:

michelle shocked...yikes.
Avatar 12:27pm Cecile:

I think it's someone already really ambivalent about themselves having a internal conflict play out in public.
Avatar 12:28pm Duane:

michelle shocked's been saying some questionable shit in interviews for years..it seems this time she was having a bit of conflict about her own sexuality play out in public..sad more than anything
Avatar 12:29pm kata:

As far as I know, Glyphs is cheaper than FontLab, and there's a mini-Glyphs which is like $30 but too limited.. Do you like Glyphs @Jan ?

Thanks for the tip @Turnip ! :)
Avatar 12:31pm Cecile:

Yeah, Duane. I think the denomination she's in won't even allow her to admit she's gay but be celibate without endangering her chance for salvation. You can at least do that in the Catholic Church these days. (So they say. I am skeptical)
Avatar 12:31pm Cecile:

highly skeptical
Avatar 12:32pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I like Glyphs. It's easier then FontLab. Font Forge seems to be PC based?
Avatar 12:32pm Cecile:

Where can you find Glyphs? And does it make sense to get it if you only plan to dabble in font design?
Avatar 12:33pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@kata: that's just grumpy old me: when resorting to some free font (from dafont or similar site) for a lightweight display serif for some foo-foo title work, it's such a treat if ligatures are included, vs. faking the blends myself... Of course I've never made my own fonts before so I might be talking outta my butt-butt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm tim from champaign:

Damn Duane, you're ruling!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Caryn:

@Cecile: indeed, style, draping and colours can sometimes be used to fabulous effect. Case in point: www.huffingtonpost.com...
Avatar 12:34pm kata:

@Jan - yup, it's sort of PC/Linux based. it was also designed by a retired multi-millionaire non-designer person. So it could use some improvement usability-wise. But I used it for 3 days and got used to it. Had only drawn type in Illustrator before that.
Avatar 12:34pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Glyphs is not *that* cheap, just not as $$ as Font Lab, the free version might do you if you're just making little adjustments
Avatar 12:35pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I'm totally Mac based. So it's not for me.
Avatar 12:35pm kata:

@Cecile -- you never know, you could get hooked !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Ike:

Yeah, this is ૯ϰ૮૯ԼԼ૯הҬ.
Avatar 12:37pm kata:

I hear ya Turnip -- designing a good typeface should include making it flexible and versatile for the use of the designer, I agree. We learned about that in class.
Avatar 12:37pm still b/p:

Ahhhhhhh, Just tuned in and IMMEDIATELY switched the output to the living room stereo speakers 'stead of anemic wee computer croakers. This music wants to go through the 38 year old Pioneer.
Avatar 12:38pm kata:

Jan -- I am Mac-based too. there's a mac version of FF. That's what i got.
Avatar 12:38pm kata:

nice Portlandia nod Duane ~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Mike East:

Is this the Portlandia theme?
Avatar 12:38pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I think fonts can be designed for different purposes and contexts. Some fonts can even be designed from a conceptual basis...
Avatar 12:39pm Duane:

yeah it's what washed out sampled to make the portlandia theme
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Mike East:

far out. a coworker was just mentioning how much he loves that theme song. I gotta turn him on to this. Thanks!
Avatar 12:41pm kata:

funny how many designer types like Duane's show ~
Avatar 12:42pm Cecile:

I think it's the sleek, modern lines, kata.
Avatar 12:42pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

That's because designers are very cool and have great taste... ;)
Avatar 12:43pm CeeDubbles:

awesome break down
Avatar 12:44pm Cecile:

that too, jan...
Avatar 12:49pm Cecile:

psych fest should be fun. Goat will be playing.
Avatar 12:54pm Cecile:

pink floyd!
Avatar 12:54pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Aye, rev.rabbit. Kerning = what some of us in the world before postscript would call white-space, i.e., gap between letters within a word. Thus "white-space reduction" = tighter kerning, etc. Perhaps boring as hell to all but type geeks?
Avatar 12:54pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Holy crap, yes. Goat.
Avatar 12:55pm Cecile:

I gotta make it to the HoZac fest in Chicago sometime. They have both Chrome and Dwight Twilley playing! That sounds like me for sure.

I like these druggy kids.
Avatar 12:56pm Duane:

I love Goat!! That Austin Psych fest looks so badASS!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm robyn:

apparently Goat's live shows are nuts. power thru cheri pi!
Avatar 1:02pm Cecile:

One thing I slightly miss from the city is those kind of songs that women fresh off their new divorce probably sang along to the eight track in their Chevy Novas while riding down the highway.
Avatar 1:02pm Cheri Pi:

I wonder if they'll believe us when we pull them over and cite them for unpaid FLoyd royalties, punishable by "community service"
Avatar 1:02pm Cecile:

I think she fell in a funny place. She would have been a great singer in a Soundgarden style band.

- After three days - an Act has to offer something unique!
...but likely as not as close to my own 'Monterey Pop ' as I may ever get?...

Son-we take Unpaid Floyalties seriously here at the Mackinac Bridge office of tolls, I'm afraid you'll have to come with me.

Avatar 1:38pm Cecile:

yeah, tim.

Never ate there, but it's legendary in Lower Mi.

This song sounds promising...
Avatar 1:39pm βrian:

It's about as flavorful as you would expect par-boiled chicken to be. It's the camp atmosphere that provides the flavor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

Sun Ra was Cosmic 10 years (?) before Pink Floyd
- & I think the Coltrane Quartet in early 60's had much to do w/ the kind of Jamming that would become de riguer for PsychRock - ? (Direct link - '8 Miles High' by Byrds - & people like 2/3rds of Cream - w/ an 'A' - came right oughta Jazz...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm tim from champaign:

I heard there's a good brewery in Frankenmuth.
Avatar 1:43pm βrian:

Brewery profile: beeradvocate.com...
Avatar 1:44pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I think sometimes originality is overrated, and it certainly should never become an obsession...
Avatar 1:45pm Cecile:

Oh, I agree, Jan, but their similarity was pretty must note-for-note. They should hide their stealing a little better...:D
Avatar 1:47pm Cheri Pi:

Next time I visit Grandma's camp I'll definitely look into visiting that brewery's beer.
Avatar 1:48pm Droll:

Cecile, So how do you feel about music based on samples? Should DJs pay up?
Avatar 1:49pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Oh I wasn't defending them, I was more reacting to the idea of originality in general. That was pretty note for note...
Avatar 1:51pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Wow I haven't heard Block 16 in a loooooong time. Nice remix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm steve:

thanks Duane, yet another track i heard years ago and never knew what it was... in this case i believe on an I-F mix from a decade ago...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

...There's Stealing, there's Influence
...& there's Swallowing Whole (like Dylan, Stones, Hendrix did?)...
- Giving Credit Where Due makes a difference...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Caryn:

Yep. Rule 1: If you do something other people have done, do it in your own way. In other words, mix your originality into it.
Rule 2: If you directly borrow from someone else, be upfront about it. Don't e.g. change one note and claim that the melody is now completely original (I'm looking at you, Vanilla Ice).
Avatar 1:54pm Cecile:

Yeah, what Caryn said.
Avatar 1:55pm Cecile:

Although I think a lot of people are pretty shady/lazy/clueless about giving credit. They won't even do it if it's a component of a creative commons license.
Avatar 1:56pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

You would have been amused Duane, I had a fairly heated (and somewhat tipsy) discussion Friday night about edits and remixes. I was both explaining and defending them to an "originalist"
Avatar 1:57pm Cecile:

I was crocheting things for charity from Internet patterns for a while, and when I would contact the pattern owner for permission (because I can read) nearly everyone I contacted said I was the first one to do this, and these patterns had thousands of web views. All they asked for was that if you were doing something for charity to let them know first.
Avatar 1:58pm Cecile:

and no one could manage to do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Caryn:

Now, if in an interview or in their sleeve notes, the obvious Pink Floyd influence is mentioned, great, and, I feel, validating of their choice. Even if they would just say, "well, we're huge fans, so maybe we unconsciously put that in there".
Avatar 1:59pm Cecile:

they should say, "thanks to the first nine Pink Floyd albums, which without we would not exist." hahahahaha
Avatar 2:00pm Droll:

Who gets to decide if there's enough originality, the original artist or the new one? Listeners? Courts?

And if money is owed, who gets to decide the amount and form of payment (credit or cash royalties)? I'm sure the record labels do not accept attention in lieu of payment, the SCotUS upheld a case against file-sharing music just yesterday.
Avatar 2:03pm Cecile:

It is a mess, Droll.
I think they should just see samples like guitar picks or violin strings or guitars and figure out a way to ensure a steady, fair payment. Like when you buy photos from a photo service.
Avatar 2:05pm northguineahills:

...and what about the designers of the instruments, amps, mics, etc, they contributed to the final sound, and many times designed something rather unique.....
Avatar 2:05pm Cecile:

this is an amazing track.

and the SCoTus shouldn't be deciding about file sharing when their grandkids probably set up their "DVD machine" for them.
Avatar 2:07pm Droll:

Cecile, It's a mess in an understatement. I'm not even sure who "they" is in your second sentence.

I wish artists used their creativity to help teach their audiences how "downloading" and "borrowing" affect everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Minnesota Jeff:

Hello!
  2:09pm vanjealous:

Thanks for spinning the Moodyman and NJB track! I remember seeing Norma with Frank Zappa in 1975 - She stole the show, for me! Too bad it was a short stay for her, though.
Avatar 2:11pm Cecile:

sorry, musicians and lawyers and record companies.

And YES - I think I may give a impromptu speech in my class telling people to stop grabbing pics off the Internet w/o permission and get them from a cheap photo service. They don't have to go with Getty Images, but they need to realize that photographers are trying to make it, too.

We can't ask others to support our craft or art if we aren't willing to do it ourselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

There was a great (PBS) film called 'Copyright Criminals' I would Link to for you if my Browser didn't suck.
- It made point that Folk & Bop Traditions were always about Reinterpretting & Quoting - nothing new to Sampling @ all.
- A difference would be that then you still were Quoting - not actually Cutting & Pasting someone's stuff.
- *Then again* - Collage is perfectly Legit Art...It usually doesn't try to hide what it's doing though (on the contrary)...

- Been many cases of Musicians humming tunes to bewildered Judges trying to show Copyright infringement...long before Sampling...

- Funny how 'Record Label' seems like an outdated term!
- They kept CD's @ $16 & tried to stem the tide of changing technology - as if Popular Music & Technology could ever be seperated - pretty much until Steve Jobs took them ny their little hands & lead the way to them (the Corporate people).
- I maintain that History shows that if the means of Music Production - & the means of Music Consumption - are affordable & accessible - Artists make great stuff & People buy a lot of it - !
Avatar 2:13pm Duane:

Duane, I see you played some new Justin Timberlake. I was looking at the CD and the target version has 2 Exclusive tracks - one is called "Body Count". I wonder if that track is JT's foray into Gangster Rap???
Avatar 2:19pm northguineahills:

da hell??!!!, this is Skream?!!man he's changed a bit in the last 6 years since I bought a platter of his....
Avatar 2:20pm Cecile:

yeah, ngh, I remember him being more hard kind of dubstep stuff...
Avatar 2:20pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Stuff be got deep in here since me left.
Avatar 2:21pm Cecile:

yeah, bizarro druid.
Avatar 2:21pm Duane:

Yeah Skream totally switched up his style..he has a great boogie track coming out..dunno about JT"s gangsta rap tune
Avatar 2:23pm Cecile:

I think the girlfriend in the song is waiting for the singer to get done with this song and leave to the parking lot where she and 15 of her best friends will chastise said singer severely.
Avatar 2:24pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Ahh I love this Havens track... You introduced it to me Duane!
Avatar 2:25pm northguineahills:

I like Skream's new production, didn't even notice there was a vocalist.... (I rarely notice lyrics)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm steve:

isnt there some similar song... "if your mother only knew" ??
Avatar 2:26pm Duane:

Skream stole the vocals from Aaliyah's "If your girl only knew"...ironic considering the discussion on here :)
Avatar 2:26pm Cecile:

Abba's "does Your Mother Know?"
Avatar 2:26pm Cecile:

hahahahahahahaha. Duane. great.
Avatar 2:29pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

ahhhh Reflex!
  2:30pm Marmalade Kitty:

Aweeesome.. Duane!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm steve:

ok, im thinking of Rahzel's beatbox "if your mother only knew", which borrowed from the Aailyah song
Avatar 2:30pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Adding gas to the fire Duane?
Avatar 2:31pm Duane:

Jan:) :) :)
Avatar 2:31pm Cecile:

hahahah.

Anyway, this is my theme song when class reunion time rolls around for me.

Consider what FMU just did - ! :
- We bring you the best stuff - w/ no BS - & you will get together & pay for it.
- & because it's what we want & we were not BS'ed in nine different ways - we did it - !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm robyn:

yay for steely dan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm fleep:

Turns out you can buy a thrill.
Avatar 2:35pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Yah for stems! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

This is it :

www.pbs.org...

- Unfortunately - I don't think they have the whole film there for free ... : ( ... : D ... : / ...
Avatar 2:35pm Droll:

Reasoning about Steely Dan competing against a good remix of themselves is like walking along a mental Möbius Strip.
Avatar 2:35pm Cheri Pi:

Duane, you're braining me.
Avatar 2:36pm Cheri Pi:

....you minx
Avatar 2:37pm Cheri Pi:

Cecile, I sent you a box of fudge.
Avatar 2:37pm Duane:

Droll: You just made my english breakfast tea explode through my nostrils !
Cheri PI: alright!!! :)
  2:38pm Marmalade Kitty:

A crispy flaky pie vomiting ham chicken and mushroom! mmm
Avatar 2:39pm nah:

Avatar 2:39pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm robyn:

Avatar 2:40pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I ate some Brie on toast earlier...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Caryn:

Just finished dinner (barley and mushrooms in tomato sauce). Unfortunately, have a cold, so tomato tastes funny. And I'll be having the sauce until Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

Do Band of Bees have just the one album? I like it.
Avatar 2:43pm still b/p:

Sweet red grapefruit buoyed my soul.
Avatar 2:43pm nah:

@Jan: I wouldn't say no to that either.
@Caryn: or that.
Avatar 2:43pm Cheri Pi:

Reverend I've sent Igor out to you with a plate of garbanzos, he should be there in 314 days as he's shuffling along on foot -don't you know our beach is quite polluted, what with all the bones.
Avatar 2:44pm Duane:

RRN63: they have 4..all stellar!
  2:45pm Marmalade Kitty:

I am making home made fried chips and dutch smoked sausage.. inspired from my recent trip to Highland Scotland where they deep fry everything.. including mince pies! mmm
Avatar 2:45pm Droll:

Caryn, I thought I was the only one who thought tomato always tasted wrong when you can't also smell it. I also recently discovered your avatar is NOT from the cover of ELO's album, Time, but is a map seen through a drop of water!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

If you have a cold you should have garlic - if you can eat that (& like it).
- Haven't had Brie in a while...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm tim from champaign:

Duane, I think Irwin might need a break this week. You should keep the groove going and do his show today.
  2:46pm Marmalade Kitty:

Haggis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Caryn:

@Droll: yes indeed
@RRN63: the sauce, indeed, had one entire garlic in it (love the stuff)
  2:47pm Haggis:

Hello! :)
Avatar 2:48pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Worth the wait! Igor's calcium-enriched footwear = bonus.
Avatar 2:48pm nah:

@MK: The first three things all sound good.

Avatar 2:51pm Eli:

Avatar 2:51pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Avatar 2:55pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

I'll Google Bees, worry not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm AnAnonymousParty:

Isn't it usually a bad thing when a romantic encounter leaves one with a burning sensation?
Avatar 2:59pm kata:

haha, thanks for mentioning mercury Duane :)
Avatar 2:59pm still b/p:

I might go to the archive to see if a moment of that Joann Garrett track was as similar to a moment of Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks/I Scare Myself as it sounded. Hers apparently recorded earlier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm robyn:

thanks for the beautiful sounds duane!
