Hello Danne, I barely made it home in time to pledge to Destination:Out.
Avatar 3:14pm Danne D:

To any folks new to WFMU (say in the past year) this is the main way WFMU raises funds with listener support. The goal is modest (half of the franchise tag for an NFL punter) but the only way they are able to get there is with your support! Keep great radio alive :)

@Danne: you got that right. I'm saving my main pledge until next week, so I can sample the tracks DJs play of their premiums and try and whittle down the premium list to those I just cannot live without.

@B23: Jim Price is longtime veteran of FMU, but currently on for only a minute show!
So go back to sleep if you like, but...BLINK and you'll miss it!!!

"Ashes to Ashes" does quite well on the vocoder!
Avatar 3:20pm Holly in NC:

This is awesome! I'm such a sucker for vocoders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Caryn:

I suspect this premium might end up in the "can't do without" pile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Me TOO! Or me three rather--I'm waiting until the Marathon starts to declare my swag, so I can sample and narrow down the maybes. I have three "open slots" after my "must have" premiums have been selected. Synth-aesthesia is making a strong case right now for one of those! :)
Avatar 3:21pm Danne D:

@B23 if you got an hour or so you can catch up with Jim's archives here :)

@Matt: yep, I got some swag I knew I definitely wanted from the description alone with my small starting pledge. Now narrowing options down for the bigger pledge.
@Van: just did that yesterday. Man, it was hard.
Avatar 3:24pm Danne D:

Yeah, basically I end up using my prize warehouse choices for prior premiums a lot of the time :)

Very tough choosin' always. Have to stop making friends at the station :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Matt from Springfield:

"Crystal Clear" during a live daylight broadcast!!!! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: 2011 seemed a particularly jam-packed-amazing year for premiums--can't wait for those to filter into the Prize Warehouse for another chance! :)

@Caryn: The "description alone" premiums have never disappointed yet!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Matt from Springfield:

I've had a pledge taken from Daniel Blumin before--call, pledge and try to get phone #1--Daniel's a great guy!
Avatar 3:29pm Danne D:

A Mouse of Today Pledge is any pledge $365 or higher. These pledges are used to support WFMU's online presence. This year, we are going to improve access to our streams, archives, and podcasts for wirelessly-enabled mobile devices: from iPhones to Androids to tablets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm DCE:

Hi Mark--it means that you have pledged! Thank you Mark! ♥ :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm DCE:

yeah, but I think we're asking why "mouse of today"? what is the significance of a mouse? a squirrel, I can see...
Avatar 3:31pm Danne D:

Personally I think the "Y3K" pledge is the most confusing as it is a $1000 pledge.

Not to be confused with a $3000 pledge which gets you a Day of Joy at WFMU :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Really?? "Are You Waiting For The Streetcar" was LOST and neglected?? So GLAD it's been unearthed! It's a sing along classic now, thanks to FMU!

When FMU was raising money to help with the purchase of the current building they are in, there was a pledge level called "House of Today", if I am not mistaken
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm DCE:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey, I pledged in for Scott's show this morning on the Webs...does that make me eligible for any prize drawings?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm efd:

Mike V L is correct - we seamlessly went from "house" to "mouse" after the House Of Today funds were used to buy the building in Jersey City.

@DCE, "Trackpad Of Today" just doesn't have the same ring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Matt from Springfield:

Springfield VA actually, but I am pleased to see so many commenters from Urbana-Champaign, IL on WFMU!
Avatar 3:35pm Jeff:

@DCE: Mouse, as in... you know those computer pointing devices.
So... Mouse of Today for the pledges earmarked for keeping the digital infrastructure running and getting better.

But there's also a reference to some history in there. Years ago, there was the "House of Tomorrow" pledge drive to help buy the building the station's now in. So... well, you see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Sigurdur:

I live about 90 seconds away from here in Reykjavik, the name of the garden is the heart garden
Avatar 3:35pm Danne D:

Once upon a time, WFMU lived on the ghost campus of the extinct Upsala College. Even though WFMU dutifully paid its bills, there were little things like the water getting turned off and other things that living on a ghost campus would make happen.

Ken had a vision of WFMU having a new location - one that ultimately was selected at 43 Monty in Jersey City. This was called the "House of Tomorrow" and to fund the project the $1/day pledge level was dedicated to this fund.

Evenutally the House of Tomorrow became, well, the House of Today. Around this time, the internets were exploding bigger and bigger. WFMU was one of the first stations to offer web-stream (heck maybe the first) - all of it free and if you poke around the archives you'll see just how far back the archives go. This costs bandwidth and $. Lots and lots of $. And to offset that cost (and to continue to bring WFMU to its now global audience) the House of Tomorrow pledge level morphed into the Mouse of Today pledge level. So there you go :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Sigurdur:

Avatar 3:36pm Danne D:

@M_f_S I graduated from U of I :)
Avatar 3:37pm kham:

Whoa hello Danne D. We're holding it down here. WFMU is still our best radio station. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm DCE:

I appreciate the history lessons, guys...had always wondered quietly about that
Avatar 3:38pm kham:

Still have seen no FMU bumper stickers in Urbana though, nor tshirts at shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Planet Tyler:

Someone has to write a legislative history of WFMU - I nominate Danne
Avatar 3:39pm kham:

Other WFMU / Illinois lore - Champaign was once the site of a great podcast feud between Scharpling and the Poster Children
Avatar 3:40pm Danne D:

No problem :) It's been an amazing to thing to bear witness too. I remember when an out of state pledge was a big deal (and usually meant it was from someone that moved away from Jersey.) And I'm glad that through this globalization, WFMU had kept its Jersey identity :)

Is WEFT still free form, kham?
Avatar 3:40pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

Oh, now I understand the heart thingy. I am a mouse for life member or whatever it is called. And I usually pledge few dollars here, few there throughout the marathon. Looks like they have automatically entered people for the heart thingy based on for life members. Cool.
Avatar 3:40pm Danne D:

I would love to say I was hip enough to be into WEFT when I was in college btw. Heck or the Poster Children for that matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Matt from Springfield:

Love Francis Bebey!

@kham: Thank you, what an honor!
@Danne: Many great convos you've had with tim from champaign on the state of the town nowadays, what's still around.
Avatar 3:40pm Joe McG:

Yes, Green Man Mark, we add the hearts to show love to pledgers!
Avatar 3:41pm kham:

Yeah, WEFT is good it's true. Their original manager just retired. Urbana has a low-power FM station too. Still haven't met Tim from Champaign though...
Avatar 3:42pm Van in DC:

So, of all the various $15 donations I drop in here & there, can I sum them all up after 2 weeks and pick out a car or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Matt from Springfield:

@Van: Absolutely! All donations are added up at the end--but why stop at the car? The Day of JOY is a much cooler option! :)
Avatar 3:43pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

I am going to show you guys some love when the marathon is over by bringing you two each a VT brew growler from Hill Farmstead brewery. We will be down for the Hoof. Even if we can't get in. I already had in mind a growler for Joe and a growler for Scott.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Caryn:

Man, filling in all the billing info when you already have a prize account set up is annoying. And now I keep worrying they'll charge my account twice... Hmm, maybe in the future I should mark all prize account entries as "pay by bill", since they won't have to send me one anyway (since I've already paid)? Any advice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm tim from champaign:

Oh yeah, kham! The lebanese/syrian joint, Holy Land. Yep, I'm the only person at Exile that plays WFMU. I'm the long haired dude with the beer drinker physique. We should make plans sometime outside of the playlist page.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Bas NL:

@ Danne D. That stands from years ago my friend! Sure thing!
Avatar 4:09pm Danne D:

@Caryn I just do the "Bill Me Later" option at the end. I'd rather they have all the info for redundancy's sake. AFAIK us serial pledgers kinda get pulled out/flagged - I assume we are known quantities that way :)

I do make a point of putting that it's "Part of my prize account" in the comments though.

Honestly, they do a pretty good job of keeping it straight. it's impressive when I think about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm steve:

hey all, just tuning in. does anyone know, is it possible to give a Mouse of Today pledge where i pay part of it every month, but pledge to multiple shows over the course of the marathon? i usually give one big pledge to one show but would love to pledge a fraction to all my fav shows...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm DCE:

Avatar 4:11pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

Maybe we can have a quivering liver that turns green for an up for those of us that have pledged already. Each time we pledge more the liver turns more green. Or something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Caryn:

@Danne: yeah, next time I'll do the "bill me later" bit. I did mention the prize account in the comments, so hopefully it'll be fine.

@steve: I think today is the last day when you can set up a Prize Account, which means you can make a big, pay-monthly pledge, but then give it out over the Marathon as individual little pledges, which also allows you to enter prize drawings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm DCE:

Kenzo's got a lot of spare time for that, I bet!
Avatar 4:13pm Danne D:

I'll bring pretzels at random - you don't want me making lunch :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm steve:

whoa thanks Caryn! but i dont see the words "Prize Account" anywhere... where can i expect to see and select them?

@Danne: Now, you have said you can make a mean BLT...sounds like a great lunch item ;)

Avatar 4:26pm Cheri Pi:

I highly recommend you, the listener, get in the running for Can Lost Tapes!!! hyperbolic praise can't cover it.
Avatar 4:27pm Cheri Pi:

yay Reverend!
Avatar 4:27pm Danne D:

I think it's easier to get a bagpiper than to get someone to loan out their bagpipes.

Um, Scott have you checked in with X.Ray? Bet he probably knows some folks with bagpipes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm fleep:

@Rev. TD Aorta give you a medal
Avatar 4:27pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

hyperventilating praise comes close.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm DCE:

crap, just realized I didn't star this tune. what a dope!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Matt from Springfield:

As RTD/BSI and leche de noche/dc pat have pointed out, they keep planning to put a streetcar line back into DC but so far haven't. Ergo, in DC we are in fact, waiting for the streetcar.
Avatar 4:31pm Szkolny:

Hooray for prizes! Originally had my fingers crossed for Ayers but am delighted to get Solla Solla, thanks!! Pledge, people — for so many other reasons, but it can happen to you too!
Avatar 4:31pm leche de noche (formerly known as dcp):

Good point Matt. I'm actually waiting for the streaker though...
Avatar 4:31pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Exactly, Matt. Need a more fun way to get down H Street NE... we are very much waiting for the (goddamned) streetcar.
Avatar 4:31pm Joe McG:

@Danne D: I know that Scott HAS checked with X Ray--alas, no luck yet!
Avatar 4:32pm Danne D:

WFMU is incredibly generous in the prize department folks I have to say :)
Avatar 4:32pm Danne D:

@Joe McG yeah that Scott is a smart dude :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm S.A. from S.F.:

S.F. Has many streetcars -- awaiting an explanation of what advantage that affords me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm braveness23:

Look at all those pledge hearts! I <3 you all!
Avatar 4:34pm leche de noche (formerly known as dcp):

you don't have to wait for a bus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Matt from Springfield:

@LdN: The first time hearing this on BT, someone was waiting for the sphincter.
@RTD: Public transport zip wires would be effective in most cities...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm S.A. from S.F.:

Or anyone else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Ergo Ph/PLU! A fine combo!
I ♥ U ALL 2! And ♥♥♥ B23!
Avatar 4:36pm kham:

Looks like no Vicki as cohost for the marathon this year? will miss PLU with Ken. Understandable though given plane fare.
Avatar 4:39pm Joe McG:

Last chance to get in the running for "Gimme Shelter" DVD! Hurry up and pledge!
Avatar 4:41pm Dave B:

Was thinking of the bagpipe conundrum - for about 300 bucks you could get an Akai EWI USB and fake it via MIDI...
Avatar 4:41pm leche de noche (formerly known as dcp):

gotta hit the road kids. Scott is getting some of my dough but I have to be ...careful....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Carmichael:

Well, I have a small set of uilleann pipes, but they're here with me in California. You mean no one in all of freakin' NY has a set of bagpipes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Caryn:

It would seem that every PD and FD unit has bagpipers, so you'd think you could find some?
Avatar 4:46pm Cecile:

Ask a police department. There is always a piper at policeman funerals.
Avatar 4:47pm Cecile:

great minds, caryn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: I'm betting as per Danne @4:27, that it's easier to find a bagpiper, than to get one to lend you their pipes. Esp with St. Pat's coming up, all the uilleann pipes in particular are prob booked at the moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Matt from Springfield:

Take care, Night Milk/LDN/dc pat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Caryn:

Anyone at WFMU know any party planners? They always have connections that can get anything you want. Bagpipes shouldn't be too hard (they would definitely have connections set up for that in preparation for St. Patty's parties).
Avatar 4:50pm Cheri Pi:

*Gasp!!!!!!! Congrats RTD!
Avatar 4:50pm BadGuyZero:

Aren't bagpipes usually made out of stray kittens? Just set some mittens out on the sidewalk and you'll get cats aplenty. Everybody knows that kittens are always losing their mittens which they need to be able to acquire pie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Matt from Springfield:

Sing HALLELUJAH, Rev'rend!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: They're probably made out of sheep. Everything from the olden days seems to be made out of sheep. (As even "cat"gut, comes from sheep).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm efd:

Matt From Springfield makes a good point that looking for spare bagpipes on St. Patrick's Day may indeed be a fool's errand.
Avatar 4:52pm Mayuko:

Thanks for mention! Hello Scott & Joe!
Avatar 4:52pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

whoa! excerptification!
blessy thee, sw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm efd:

But if anyone's up for the challenge of a fool's errand it's the staff at WFMU!
Avatar 4:52pm Danne D:

@Matt wow yeah the finale being on St Patrick's day probably doesn't help this situation...

@Carm - I would check with Scott. Seriously. May be a viable option the way things stand.
  4:52pm timo:

iphone yes, but android app is lagging behind.. doesn't work so well..
Avatar 4:53pm Cecile:

There has to be at least an AC/DC tribute band or something?
Avatar 4:53pm Cecile:

ooooh. lonnie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm braveness23:

yeah, the android app has just a wee bit of suck about it.
Avatar 4:54pm Cheri Pi:

Goodnight my fools!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Matt from Springfield:

@EFD: It's why WFMU exists! :)

@RTD: Excerptification, the 39th most important sacrament of the Turnip Druids, isn't it! :)
Avatar 4:54pm Cecile:

later, pi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Matt from Springfield:

Goodnight! I'll have a foolish pi of cheris in your honor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Caryn:

Bagpipe bags can be made of synthetic materials or animal skin (e.g. cow, dog, sheep or goat). If we could get two bagpipes, one of cow- and one of dog-skin, it would be kind of perfect, wouldn't you say?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Very particular, but if we could get both those donated, we should never let them go!
Avatar 4:57pm Cecile:

crazy little Lonnie came knockin' at my front door. Just like he did before.
Avatar 4:57pm Cheri Pi:

<3 MfS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Caryn:

It has to be said, if you can't find bagpipes, it'll be easy on finale evening to grab a drunken bagpiper on the street. Come on, they'll be wasted by the time H&M starts! Then just instruct them to jam.
  4:57pm HFox:

What did I just win?
Avatar 4:58pm BadGuyZero:

I have an Android phone. I use the TuneIn app to listen to FMU when I'm out and about. If I want to check the playlist or leave a comment I just use my phone's web browser to visit the station's website.
Avatar 4:59pm Joe McG:

@Heather: You won "Gimme Shelter" DVD! I hope you like it!
Avatar 5:00pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Love the iPhone app. Any problems were all due to reception issues, not the app. [see last week's crying jags on the comment board from the amtrak t'ween DC and boston, long stretches of buffering silence]
  5:00pm HFox:

Did you already give away Solla Solla: Maestro Ilaiyaraaja & the Electronic Pop Sound of Kollywood 1977-1983 ?
Avatar 5:01pm Cecile:

Victim of Changes fixes everything.
Avatar 5:01pm Cecile:

Bust out the butt-rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Caryn:

Who won the Ayers?
Avatar 5:02pm BadGuyZero:

The Android app streams for one or two minutes then freezes and buffers for eternity.

One of the funny things about being a serial pledger is you occasionally win something you forgot or didn't quite realize you won :)
Avatar 5:16pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

only the coolest stickers go on the gear cases. I keep scuffing off the WOOF-MOO dog & cow one: they need to stock 'em at the corner bodega.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Carmichael:

That happened to me last year, Danne. Unexpected swag landed in the mailbox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Caryn:

@Danne: I've never won anything. But I keep hoping this Marathon I'll be lucky! *keeps fingers crossed*
Avatar 5:18pm Cecile:

I put stickers on my sketch books.
Avatar 5:19pm BadGuyZero:

Is Kanye West down there enjoying fish sticks as well?
Avatar 5:20pm Danne D:

@Caryn I hope you win too :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Sigurdur:

fish sticks
Avatar 5:21pm kham:

Was saving all my past stickers for perfect application. Kid came in, undid them, stuck them to the office floor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Sigurdur:

fish sticks and custard....,,, Doctor Who
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Caryn:

@Danne: aw, thanks. I'm sure it'll happen some day. But as long as WFMU meets its goals in the meantime, I'm happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Caryn:

Dammit, now I feel like having some fish sticks...
Avatar 5:24pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Null & Void track = ungodly wonderful.
Avatar 5:26pm Jeff:

Ooh, this is good.
Avatar 5:26pm Cecile:

this sound like the Rocky Horror Picture Show if the Silver Apples wrote it.
Avatar 5:26pm BadGuyZero:

Null & Void sounds like a theme song for a Sid & Marty Krofft series that doesn't exist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Sigurdur:

Agreed Jeff
Avatar 5:28pm Holly in NC:

The entire Null & Void lp is super, pledge for it folks!
Avatar 5:28pm Cecile:

Or a Tim Curry solo album and Rick Wakeman's White Rock sdtk playing at the same time.

Avatar 5:38pm Joe McG:

@Matt: What a great song!
Avatar 5:39pm Joe McG:

Sitting at home and not pledging? Do it now! First day is the best day!
Avatar 5:39pm kham:

i wonder if anyone is giving out Numero Group goodies as prizes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Carmichael:

It sounds like the Sylvers, in a good way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Your suggestion, or did Scott think of this choice without your interference? ;)
Avatar 5:40pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Carmichael:

Evening Drive. Joe and Scott, stashed in your dash on a good lookin' Friday!
Avatar 5:42pm Holly in NC:

@BGZ - The android app is great - only a few minor glitches (no horizontal orientation the biggie) that I'm sure will be rectified in update - but it had the song "favorite" option before the favorite option was cool! Super helpful.
That said, when in endless buffering mode I too use TuneIn ;-)
Avatar 5:43pm Holly in NC:

@Matt - As soon as Pat S. came on, I thought "Oh, Joe picked that" ;-)
Avatar 5:45pm Joe McG:

@Holly: Nope, that was all Scott!
Avatar 5:46pm Cecile:

Avatar 5:46pm Cecile:

nearly every I meant to say.
Avatar 5:46pm BadGuyZero:

YES! This cover is fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm cklequ:

I'm really late to the party here, but can anybody tell me where to get a copy of this DJ Female Convict Scorpion Bill Cosby Talks To Kids About Drugs album (played a couple of hours ago)? Any google search turns up nothing but WFMU playlist pages. Damn these eccentric oddball west coast artists. Why don't they want me to buy their music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Caryn:

I feel very at home now...
  5:50pm Mary Wing:

ckleau, check this out:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Matt from Springfield:

@Joe/Holly: Well great minds think alike! ;) Still, I had the same thought!
Avatar 5:51pm BadGuyZero:

@cklequ: This was the top search result when I did a Google search: joshpollock.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 5:51pm BadGuyZero:

CONFESSION: Mary Wing types faster than I do.
Avatar 5:54pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Had to split & relieve the dog. Came back & cow is freaking out. It's a wonderful world.
  5:54pm Mary Wing:

Heh. Actually, Mary Wing cuts and pastes faster than BGZ. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm cklequ:

@ Mary and BadGuyZero Thanks, but i've been there and only one track from that is available on his bandcamp page. The whole album has been getting a lot of play on WFMU. I assumed it would be easier to find.
Avatar 5:57pm BadGuyZero:

The whole album is available or you can click on the individual tracks and get them separately. The album and tracks are all name your price, so it's a bargain!
  5:58pm Mary Wing:

cklequ, if you scroll to the bottom of that page, there's a "For all other inquiries, click here" and you can contact DJ Josh himself and ask how to acquire it. :-)
6:00pm Adam in Portland and Lynnwood:

Alright, Winners! We all win with another year of WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Matt from Springfield:

Congrats Jeremy--hope you enjoy the Can!

Thanks muchly Scott! Joe! Phone room volunteers! And PLEDGERS!! Have a great night!
