I'll take some Holy Balm! It's wholly balm!

Hi Joe and Surface Noise fans!

Hey, Matt! Welcome to the end of the year!
  1:20am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey KP! Back up there, away from VA? Well I was away in PA over the holiday--if I thought of it we should've given each other psychic fistbumps when we passed each other at the same latitude...

That's a good idea: a Happy Old Year party, celebrating the recent past, and getting a head start/pre-New Year's Eve party! Good use of a Dec 30.

Cheers, Chop Scott!
Hola, Mermelada Gatita!!

KP:

I hope Phil Ochs is not listening to this.
  1:25am
Timbo:

Wow, this Janet Greene song is fascinating. A side of that movement we don't often hear about.
  1:27am
Matt from Springfield:

This Janet Greene is a good tune/arrangement--even the message I give about 51% to. There's no practical difference between fascism and communism. But, I'll head both of 'em off by doing what I like, and supporting FMU.
  1:27am
KP:

Matt. Enjoyed my stay. I listened to WFMU Christmas shows 24 hours a day on iphone i got in Arlington. it will always be special to me.
  1:27am
Matt from Springfield:

"This machine makes fascists feel bad"!! ;)
  1:29am
Dave in PA:

evenin evra buddy!
  1:29am
Matt from Springfield:

Glad you enjoyed them, KP! I snuck in a few shows and comments and have been catching up on Archives.
  1:30am
Matt from Springfield:

Hiya Dave in PA!
Unbelievably, you're actually the very first 'Dave' or 'David' on this comment board tonight! :)
  1:33am
Dave in PA:

more coffee.... mmmm
  1:35am
Dave in PA:

darn I missed all this cool music - should I go A) back in time to hear the broadcast, or B) forward in time to hear the archive? Hmmm....
Avatar 1:36am
Joe McG:

Hey, Dave! If you did both at once, would you cancel yourself out?
  1:37am
KP:

Terre T's Christmas show was in the spirits of the holiday, if you catch my drift.
  1:40am
Marmalade Kitty:

@Matt; communism is unprecedented..
  1:40am
Matt from Springfield:

Oh, didn't realize Nick Lowe and His Noise to Go was his band at the time! Now I'll always order Nick Lowe to go when in Cleveland!

@Dave: I would send my body to the future, to be able to pause the Archive without missing anything--but send my comments to the past, to correspond with the original program! WFMU metaphysics are hard...
  1:41am
Dave in PA:

C) Could you start again please, Joe?
Avatar 1:42am
Joe McG:

@Dave: No problem. I'll just do the same show next week.
  1:43am
Matt from Springfield:

@MK: Do you mean that fascism has happened before in real life, whereas communism has never been properly achieved?

Depends on your definition, I think the "authentic" type of the anarcho-syndicalist variety was briefly achieved during the Spanish Civil War.
  1:44am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Wait! Can I play this Archive while listening to the re-broadcast show next week?!
Avatar 1:45am
Joe McG:

@Matt: I dont' know, Matt, I might self-destruct!
  1:46am
KP:

liked that what can i tell her.
  1:47am
KP:

Matt, you'd miss all the Cool Cats.
Avatar 1:47am
Joe McG:

@KP: That's a helluva good record.
  1:47am
Matt from Springfield:

This 45 is original? It's in great shape!
Avatar 1:48am
Joe McG:

@Matt: Yeah, that Coasters 45 is in better shape than this record from 1977. Did pressings get worse? Probably!
  1:50am
Chop Scott:

I am feeling it, thanks Joe!
  1:50am
Matt from Springfield:

@KP: Don't worry, I'll coast on by...
@Joe: Goes to show, they never make things "like they used to!"

This High Inergy is a sultry little makeout number though, I like it! Reminds me of "Skinnydippin", a little bit.
Avatar 1:50am
Joe McG:

Excellent! Hope we see you soon at the station, CS!
Avatar 1:51am
Joe McG:

@Matt: You're right, it's a bit like "Skinnydippin'"!!
  1:54am
Brian in UK:

Does anybody really know what time it is?
  1:55am
Matt from Springfield:

@Brian: Universal Coordinated Time! (but that's just the scientist in me ;)

Good morning to ya, Brian!
Avatar 1:55am
Joe McG:

Hey, Brian! I think you must know since you're ahead in time...
  1:56am
Brian in UK:

Joe, refering to quality of pressings, mid seventies were poor quality over here.
Avatar 1:58am
Joe McG:

@Brian: I think everywhere. Whenever I find an old 50s 45, even if it looks wrecked, it often will play better than a new-looking one from the 70s.
  2:00am
Matt from Springfield:

Minnie Riperton, always a good choice!
  2:00am
Brian in UK:

Still got a full moon in the sky over here. First clear night for ages.
Hit it Minnie.
  2:00am
Dave in PA:

I'm listening @32k for that lo-fi experience
  2:01am
Matt from Springfield:

Re: poor quality of 70s pressings, perhaps with the oil crises there was less material in the record, and more resistant to wear and age.
  2:02am
KP:

Iphone? it's not bad. in car driving away from NJ-NY i hardly notice the dropoff. Well there is a dropoff.
  2:04am
Brian in UK:

Special Brew is a 9% non draught beer. Not my cup of tea.
  2:05am
KP:

Three Cool Cats among first things Beatles recorded, for Decca. They passed.
  2:06am
Matt from Springfield:

Danish Blue Notes? With "Harald Melfinn"?

And I thought it was "topless" :)
  2:07am
Brian in UK:

Was it Dick Rowe at Decca?
  2:09am
Matt from Springfield:

That's some New Year's Super-Party!
  2:12am
KP:

Brian Wiki says Tony Meehan of the Shadows auditioned them. THey passed because "Guitar groups were on way out." The bootleg is very common and it good fidelity (also on youtube). George sings most of the leads so they had not really hit their stride.
  2:16am
Matt from Springfield:

Field recordings are still great, still useful even today!
Maybe there will be a comp someday of "iPhone field recordings"! Just make sure you remember not to delete the ones you've made...
  2:18am
KP:

"Can't Buy Me Love: The Beatles, Britain, and America"
by Jonathan Gould is a tremendous book. It's a little scholarly, lot about society but i liked that. Covers all.
  2:20am
KP:

Brian, i did not read far enough in the Wiki post:
Many have speculated who made the decision to reject the Beatles. While various accounts of the audition have been published, most agree it was either Dick Rowe, producer Mike Smith or ex-Shadow Tony Meehan.
  2:21am
Brian in UK:

KP The social side is very important in this country, we were still coming out of rationing etc from WW2. I saw the Lennon biography on an aeroplane flight, enjoyable. Good period piece.
  2:25am
Brian in UK:

KP What was the Phil Ochs reference earlier, he is, still a hero of mine. I am annoyed that There But For Fortune is only on Region 1.
  2:25am
Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Joe and all the listeners.
  2:26am
Matt from Springfield:

Surface Crossroads! Great set! (I can't resist--gotta make a "Sinner's" pun whenever old school gospel is played :)

Hola Richard!
Avatar 2:30am
Joe McG:

Hey, Richard! Sinner's Noise, Matt!
  2:31am
Brian in UK:

Said it before, best thing 'bout CDs is the comp.
  2:33am
Matt from Springfield:

Sinner's Noise, I like it as well!
I like this soulful acknowledgement of the Evil World that we're livin' in, as well!
  2:34am
Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Matt.

The Relatives will be playing a benefit for us on January 13th. Couldn't be more excited.
  2:39am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, the Relatives at the Bell House? Re-formed or have they been touring? Wicked jealous of you guys in the NYC area! (Hint, hint!)
Avatar 2:41am
Joe McG:

I don't know if they ever actually broke up, but yes, they're back, playing other shows, too. Check out their web site, they may be coming to Virginia also.
  2:45am
Matt from Springfield:

Nothing close by...yet. But signs look good that the Relatives could be venturing beyond NY/NJ/Philly soon.
  2:46am
Brian in UK:

Hey it is getting daylight, no more moon. Man washing his car outside the mosque in the half light.
'Time to wake and shake it, wag it and shag' (Ken Kesey)
  2:52am
KP:

Brian, i was just remarking about that offering being a right wing folk song. I loved Ochs. had a ticket to see him but he didnt show. THere but for Fortune was trememendous. My friends hung out with him in his last days in Village.
  2:56am
KP:

Speaking of folk, Joe you always give us enough and sometimes more. See ya in 2013. May it be a lucky one.
  2:56am
Brian in UK:

KP I still get angry thinking about his last years. I keep hearing how good is the film!
His influence lives on, have you heard this band. Mesapotamia Blues is good.

Happy New Year, Joe, everyone!
All the best for 2013!

Joe, as a followup to Bill Wilson, this is interesting.
