Hey everybody, should be a fun show -- picked up lots of great stuff in Finland -- but don't forget to pledge, if you can. FMU needs your help!

I had the lutefisk in Portland, by the way. Apparently it has served as a stand-in for NYC deli type whitefish out here.

Snortley:

Jeffrey Steingarten, author of The Man Who Ate Everything:

Lutefisk is not food, it is a weapon of mass destruction. It is currently the only exception for the man who ate everything. Otherwise, I am fairly liberal, I gladly eat worms and insects, but I draw the line on lutefisk.

What is special with lutefisk?

Lutefisk is the Norwegians' attempt at conquering the world. When they discovered that Viking raids didn't give world supremacy, they invented a meal so terrifying, so cruel, that they could scare people to become one's subordinates.

All I know about Finnish music are surf bands like Laika & the Cosmonauts. They've got a good surf/garage scene there. Any on tap this morn, Tony? I LAIKA that stuff! (See what I did there?)

Yeha, I guess Laika & the Cosmonauts would be the extent of my knowledge of Finnish music, too. Saw them open for, of all people, Ministry (late '80s/early '90s). Hanoi Rocks! Ha, I used to live down the street from one of the members, Andy McCoy - he would sit in a drunken stupor in his front yard, strumming a guitar, wearing rock star pseudo-gypsy clothes, holding a perpetual yard sale, while his wife yelled at him from the kitchen window. He sold me a bunch of records 'n' junk. I saw him play in Iggy Pop's band. A friend of mine convinced him to sell his gold record Iggy gave him for, like 5 bucks or sumthin.

He tried to sell me a wahwah pedal or fuzz box or sumthing for $45, but I was broke at the time, and said I couldn't. Wife's voice from the window: "It's not just any fuzzbox, it belonged to international rock star Andy McCoy!" And from that point on, my friends and I always referred to him as International Rock Star Andy McCoy.

And that is my Hanoi Rocks story. Thank you.
