  3:08pm
bartleby:

Scott, you know the broadcast signal just died a minute ago
  3:08pm
Maestroso:

Well, that explains why my cable feed switched to wrti.
  3:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

Moog River, nice!

@Scott W: More like the Hudson Sea! I'd better check DC area webcams, see if flooding has started yet.
  3:10pm
BSI:

Scott, I figured you had a zip-line connection from home to FMU, for just such an emergency... Arrive magically like some demented superhero with a bag of records and a head fulla crazy...

LOVE Roy Orbison!

BT played this cardboard postcard disc, I couldn't listen to the entire track myself because of skipping/rotation problems, but if you want to hear the whole uninterrupted track, check Brian Turner's archive.

Hall & Oates never sounded better!
  3:52pm

Hiya Scott. Hi 'Caners.
  3:52pm
Caryn:

This is clearly the speed at which H&O should be listened to always.
  3:52pm
Dave E::

Although, 78 might be better as it would be over sooner!
  3:52pm
Jay/ London:

this song song is better at this speed .. maneater
  3:52pm
Cecile:

I like this at regular speed.
  3:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

Daryl Hall has a great, forceful soul voice. Normally when I play around with tracks using Audacity, I have sped up H&O tracks; even after a high pitch shift, Daryl's voice usually remains quite strong and intact.
  3:52pm
Michael Slaboch:

Sounds like Jon Glaser is singing in his Delocated voice modulator.

Watch out boy, i chewin up your added fer shurr!!!!!

  3:54pm
Dave E::

Can anyone explain why the speed of records is 16, 45, 33 and 78? Seems that they should be even sppeds like 20, 40, 60 etc.
  3:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: Everything is ultimately "ripped off" of something--with 80s soul you hear a lot of Motown lifts. "Maneater" borrowed from the Supremes "My World Is Empty Without You" intro rhythm. But at least they used that unique rhythm very well.
  3:55pm
GrannyP:

Kind of like the slow 'Maneater'.
  3:56pm
Soul Patch:

is this NKOTB?
  3:56pm
Dominick:

wowie
  3:57pm
Cecile:

H&O came by their love of soul honestly. They used to be studio musicians for Philadelphia International. I like them a lot. Some of their stuff is pretty facile and cold-blooded, but their good stuff is excellent pop.
  3:57pm
Cecile:

this is awesome. I love this.
  3:57pm
Dave E::

Maneater like that guy in Florida. They should keep the hurricanes in Florida too.
  3:58pm
G:

There are very specific tech and business reasons (good or bad, your call) -- there's a ton of detail scattered throughout this article, especially in sections with the headings "Speed(s)" --

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gramophone_record
  3:58pm
Carmichael:

I am not now, nor have I ever been, everything.
  3:59pm
Parq:

Hi Scott. Don't have any quips. Just want to say my hat's off to you for making it in to do this today. All the best.
  3:59pm
Caryn:

I like Hall's voice (and Oates' mustache, of course), but a lot of the songs are not my cup of tea. I think slowing "Maneater" up makes the backing track way better than normal. Of course, H&O just makes me think of the running "H&O work with inner city kids" sketches on "Big Train", so it's hard to take them seriously anymore.
  3:59pm
Dave E::

TY G:!
  4:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Dave E: In response to your question, here is the best explanation I've found. Took a moment to search old playlists to find the link for it again, but here it is:
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/228/why-are-record-speeds-33-45-and-78-rpm

(Incidentally, thank you G, for providing that link in the first place!)

  4:08pm
G:

@Matt: Yeah, I remembered that I knew about that other link you just now reposted, but was not recalling it off the top of my head at the moment Dave E posted. So as a fallback I knew the wiki article would be okay for getting to know something about it. Thanks for refinding that link, Matt :-)

Now it's outside for me, for a bit, to check the Brooklyn weather. (I'm done with online paid work for the day, and the electricity hasn't died here yet :-) )

  5:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Frankensandy!!
  5:17pm
Cecile:

Yes, they are delicious. They make them around here at some of the Eastern European bakeries.
  5:17pm
Jay/ London:

  5:17pm
cosmic matrix:

  5:18pm
Carmichael:

Greg Hawkes is the Cars keys player. He does have a mini-Korg, as well as other neat little gimicky things to get that swelly sound.
  5:19pm
greenberg:

Is that a 45 or an 8-track?
  5:20pm
cosmic matrix:

@carmichael -- mine actually belongs to ryan power... i fixed it a little bit and now i get to USE IT all the time -- check out RYAN POWER he's the best
  5:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

  5:26pm
cosmic matrix:

@ hollis, hey did you ever meet MYSTIC MERLIN? i met him in glastonbury in 1999... he said he lived in bristol!
  5:27pm
conrad:

Matt: Shakey's is crap, the McD's of pizza.
  5:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Seekers' "Come The Day" seems an obvious influence on A Mighty Wind songs. It's a good'un, such idealistic folk on the dreams of future peace and brotherhood.
  5:27pm
Rawnald:

DJ Battle time!!
  5:27pm
Cecile:

He made "for your consideration"
  5:28pm
Cecile:

my favorite one is Best in Show.
  5:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

I liked "For Your Consideration", though it's definitely not a classic like Guffman/Best In Show/Mighty Wind.
  5:28pm
cosmic matrix:

this song meant A LOT to me when i was a little kid--just somehow got me to the core
  5:29pm
Hollis (U.K):

@cosmic everyone is called "Merlin" In Glastonbury, it is that kinda twon .. *hippy heaven*
  5:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@conrad: And CiCi's Pizza buffet, the wretched one they usually talk about on WFMU!
  5:29pm
Jeff:

Oh, my - y'know, the Guest crew couldn't have done such a devastatingly good job of satirizing the folk scene if they hadn't really known and loved it.
  5:29pm
Caryn:

Christopher Guest: makes great movies, writes great music, is a nobleman, and managed to snag Jamie Lee Curtis. Man has it all.
  5:29pm
Jeff:

Where's the Ian & Sylvia?
  5:30pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

No Cloudbusting by Kate Bush?
  5:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Jeff: It helps that Guest & Co. are part of the really early Boomers, so they were old enough to experience the folk scene in the early 60s as it was happening.
  5:31pm
Hollis (U.K):

yeah cloudbusting would be perfect
  5:31pm
cosmic matrix:

@ hollis, OK, good point, but this guy dressed up as a wizard a lot and made a crop circle board game! he was also part of a stonehendge rock-moving project from wales or something
  5:32pm
Andy Ortmann:

Cloudbursting, SNAP
  5:32pm
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

  5:35pm
Cecile:

with an oatmeal box and some black paint?
  5:36pm
Ike:

@gil, it's not very interesting static. I've heard some good static over the years, but I don't like this static.
  5:36pm
Cecile:

cosmic, the TRASH-80! lol
  5:36pm
cosmic matrix:

  5:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@amEdeo: Incidentally I was listening to your Terror-oake with Ophelia last night! Great job, possibly better than "Kenny G Sings The Classics"! :)
  5:39pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

XXX Root Beer,Barq's
  5:39pm
Cecile:

And Sprecher's
  5:40pm
Cecile:

Or from the Simpson's: "We have soy milk, Clamato and Mr. Pibb!"
  5:40pm
cosmic matrix:

safety dance blew my mind through my sony walkman... also the thriller album.... made me a future sound engineer!!
  5:40pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

The zebra mussels also strain out a lot of material from the Hudson River.
  5:40pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Sprecher's has great labels.
  5:41pm
Carmichael:

Shakeys was founded in Sacramento, along with Round Table and one other. Hmmm ... Straw Hat, maybe?
  5:41pm
cosmic matrix:

zebra mussel soda was the first 45 i ever bought
  5:41pm
Caryn:

I suspect the message of The Walker Brothers' "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" might seem too bleak now. But it would still be a good track to play.
  5:41pm
amEdeo:

@Matt from Springfield: Wow, thanks! That's a super compliment.
  5:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Kebekelektrik's "Bolero"! That's their song! ;)

  5:43pm
octy:

New Colony Six.
  5:43pm
Cecile:

whoooo, goosebumps
  5:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

WFMU - Always, and Forever!
  5:45pm
SteveL:

Safety Dance was 'our' song, albeit, somewhat tongue in cheek. Our favorite grocery store used to play it on the cash registers (boop boop, beep beep, boop boop boop, beep beep!)
  5:45pm
Caryn:

After they're done with hurricane-appropriate songs, they'll move on to hurricane-appropriate bands, like Flood or The Hurriganes.
  5:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

Reverb-oake!
  5:45pm
Cecile:

Matt, that should be a t-shirt.

Sang it, Scott.
  5:46pm
G:

FWIW, Christie givin props to the Prez, and slammin the non-evacuees (including some local mayors, e.g. Atlantic City).
  5:46pm
Tim G:

That was beautiful. I am sending over a case of TEEM to the studio
  5:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

"How much do you weigh, caller? How many *stone*?"
  5:46pm
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

The "Safety Dance" video has always creeped me out a little bit.
  5:47pm
Cecile:

ACE!
  5:47pm
Skirkie:

Long story short on Christie's remarks: Had a good conversation with the president today. They're BFF now.
  5:47pm
Robb:

CLAY! YES!
  5:48pm
Caryn:

@BGZ: well yeah, because, like a lot of 80s' music videos, it makes no sense whatsoever. Just a hodge-podge of "let's put those guys in weird costumes dancing bizarrely in there too".
  5:49pm
Cecile:

tim g....teem!
  5:49pm
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

"New York Groove" was LCD Soundsystem's intro music at the Terminal 5 show I attended. That was a hell of a show.
  5:50pm
Hollis (U.K):

  5:50pm
Robb:

Dusty + Sandy = SMOOTH
  5:50pm

Power is wobbling here again, lights are dimming, so I'm really glad you're back on the air at 91.1!
  5:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

THAT'S why the Pidge is so good for Hurricane Parties!
  5:51pm
Skirkie:

91,1 is back. Mind the curses.
  5:52pm
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

"Pop Goes The World"
  5:52pm

  5:53pm
Max:

I love you guys, but I think you should PLAY more 7" and TALK less about them! :D
  5:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sing it, Clay!
  5:54pm
Hollis (U.K):

i am sure .. Hurricane music would be Throbbing Gristle. *any track*
  5:54pm
Cecile:

the association is always the right answer
  5:54pm
Carmichael:

So what's the local weather like as of now? They said "early Monday evening".
  5:55pm
Jaybee in Bmore:

I second Hollis
  5:55pm
Yvonne:

Oh it sounds so pretty. Like an wind-up radio when you're camping in the woods.
  5:56pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Throbbing Gristle also makes great Halloween music, Hallocane!
  5:56pm
Jaybee in Bmore:

@Hollis I agree!
  5:57pm
Caryn:

Maybe it IS a wind-up radio. Earlier, the turntables were losing power, so we may be stuck with music that can be played via battery power or hand-crank.
  5:58pm
diego:

thanks
  5:58pm
Cecile:

Flash went down for a sec, I was afraid for you guys. Felt like a horror movie

  6:05pm
Cecile:

  10:42am
