Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Options October 25, 2012: Police Brutality March - 17 Sizzlers!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop‑up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
The First 22 mins. of this episode were recorded October 22, 2012 in Union Square Park, Manhattan. The ocassion was the 17th National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation. It was a heavy scene, but an important one. I did have some sonic difficulties in recording the guest speakers as their voices came through a PA system. Very muddy result. Apologies there.

I also had a stockpile of 17 flea market finds that were burning a hole in my imagination and I really needed to play them. So ... following the footage from the Protest and March, you'll hear The 17 Sizzlers! I do like this group of records. A strange episode, but an episode nonetheless.

I hope you have a Happy Halloween out there in radioland. We'll see you next week. Until then, take care and ...

Listener comments!

  6:05pm Night Al:

Fight the power!
  6:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Mr. Pea!!
Great start! And are those your beats on top of her rap?
Avatar 6:07pm Clay:

Hey guys. Yeah, Matt. All mine. ha!
  6:08pm david:

watched the livestream of the October 22nd Coalition and co's event. The woman who said Kelly and Bloomberg was full of sh*t— the entirety of what she said was one of the most powerful and effective indictments I've heard. Clay is thoughtfully, sensitively editing and curating this material.
Avatar 6:10pm Clay:

Thanks Davide. Really wrestled with audio quality trying to record the P.A. at Union Square Park. Pretty lo-fi. I wish I'd had more time to assemble this show. Could have made a nice hour.
  6:10pm david:

on another note, my playlist just skipped to Coltrane's "Ascension" and I thought for a moment it was part of the program.
Avatar 6:10pm Clay:

David, I mean ... though I kind of like Davide.
  6:10pm Matt from Springfield:

@david: Is there a video posted anywhere of the woman's whole statement?
Glad that one of us watched the whole event, and can confirm Clay's thoughtful summary of it.
Avatar 6:12pm Clay:

I had to add digital megaphone effect to that woman's speech to add treble. So muddy. On the other hand, these whistles drive me nuts. Now that I've mentioned them, you won't be able to not notice them.
  6:14pm kata:

howdy Clay and listeners -- great coverage Clay !
  6:15pm david:

@MFS This is it raw, I think http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/26366369 - if not check the other archives on this page
  6:15pm Matt from Springfield:

Did they pass out whistles, or did the protestors bring their own? Drums are good for protests, you can march and chant to them. Whistles can be problematic because they can make communication difficult.
Avatar 6:16pm Clay:

TY Kata. Appreciate that. Not even an S-Fest in here today. A morgue! Except for my closest Dustyites.
  6:17pm kata:

ha ha, you have a good memory, I forgot about the sausage comment.. ;)
  6:17pm Matt from Springfield:

All right, thanks david!
Hi kata! Individual hi to Night Al, and everyone else!
  6:17pm Carmichael:

Was listening while waiting for the comments to come up. Most of what I heard (while working) was unintelligible, because of the PA system and the woman's voice histrionics. Maybe seeing it would shed some light on her speech.
  6:18pm Matt from Springfield:

"Rich the Anarchist"!! He was the anti-police interviewee from the FIRST OWS show! Makes sense he would show up to this.
Avatar 6:19pm Clay:

Rich is everywhere, Matt. Carmichael, sorry for bad audio. New sonic low today.
  6:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Banner ad on the UStream page, for "Kars 4 Kids"--the notorious "grating" AM commercials in the NYC area, Irwin's done a remix of that!
  6:21pm Carmichael:

That's OK Clay. You're doing the best with what you were handed. I've been saying that for this entire election cycle.
  6:22pm Carmichael:

Matt, I hear those commercials out here in NorCal. Nationwide grating ...
  6:23pm Matt from Springfield:

Chilliwack delivered in less than 24 hours, Ho Pful! ;)
Avatar 6:23pm Clay:

  6:24pm Carmichael:

Ya Clay! Now can you play Nutz' "As Far As the Eye Can See"? HA HA
  6:25pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Oh man!..
Yep, always doing the best with what we're handed. It's true "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit", but it's not useless--you can make fertilizer out of it!
  6:25pm Love America:

I love NY but accept the fact that NY hates my guts.
Avatar 6:26pm Clay:

Saw a billboard on the West Side Highway ... "If you leave New York you'll have to live in America."
  6:27pm Carmichael:

  6:28pm kata:

this is a great song - but I always think it's The Who's "Can't Explain" when I hear the first few bars..
Avatar 6:29pm Clay:

I thought that same thing, Kata.
  6:29pm Matt from Springfield:

*NAZZ* Todd!
  6:30pm Love America:

Do Romney n Ryan prove their love is greater as they wear larger and larger flag lapel pins? Trivia: the flag lapel pin came into fashion as supporting the prez during Watergate. Never mind the flag code provision prohibiting that (no clothes or jewelry).
  6:32pm Euro K:

kata & Clay: exact same "Who" is it thinking going on here. Can't explain it.
Avatar 6:32pm Clay:

lemon pledge as your dusting ... adds new luster to the wood ...
  6:35pm david:

@Clay the whistles also drive me nuts... does not translate well to any medium I bet...
  6:36pm Euro K:

Can't beat last eve's "Daily Show" for shooting the shit. A must see for anyone who doesn't have shit for brains.
  6:38pm Matt from Springfield:

Sizzling selection!
  6:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Do you have an Occupy Halloween show planned for next week?
  6:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Euro K - The moment of Zen last night was a good one.
Avatar 6:41pm Clay:

No plans for anything yet, Ken. We'll see what develops.
  6:42pm octy:

Cross Country- the other side of their soporific and dreamy cover of "In The Midnight Hour," you're plunging my brain back into 1973 right now and it's a beautiful thing.
  6:42pm Euro K:

@KfHP: All the shit-shooting was apt. Esp. enjoyed the Palin-rhino. Didn't know rhinos did that. Always knew Sarah sprayed it.
  6:44pm kata:

kinda swamped at the office today.. digging the show, listening without departure.
  6:45pm Carmichael:

@Euro K: did you see Colbert after? He was talking about the Republicans and their frequent mention of rape in their election speeches. Painfully accurate humor.
  6:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Yay Maxwell's for hosting a populist event!
They are friends of FMU after all, so they're a friend of me :)
Avatar 6:47pm Clay:

Octy ... so cool that you know the song. I just stumbled upon it at a flea market. Atco seems to have a lot of one-off type bands like Atlantic Ocean, etc. Love that Cross Country song. Kind of prog, kind of
  6:48pm Euro K:

@Carmichael: Moudock, what a tool! But I enjoyed more his Trumping challenge. Yes!
  6:48pm Matt from Springfield:

HA! Ironic Dragnet quote! Perfect for techno mixes!
Avatar 6:48pm Clay:

.. beach boys.
  6:50pm Carmichael:

I thought that WAS the Beach Boys. Boy, they are dead on. They should be on Gaylord's Marathon Premium.
  6:51pm Matt from Springfield:

One Hit Wonder B-side! Joe McG often plays those.
Avatar 6:52pm Clay:

Going to have to back it on out of here. Night People hoofs trembling faintly on floor. Thanks for listening to the Sizzlers! Fight the Power. Gobama! 99 Luv
Always Remember George McGovern. and PLEDGE!!!!!!
  6:53pm octy:

Clay- I had that 45 when I was 12, the other side was a minor hit but yeah I always dug the pop-prog trippiness of "A Smile Song."
  6:53pm Euro K:

yes, ALWAYS remember McGovern and how different our nation's history might have been without Milhaus.
Avatar 6:54pm Clay:

Octy ... I read Cross Country was The Tokens of Lion Sleeps Tonight fame, trying to transition into the '70's.
  6:54pm Euro K:

You're all OK.
  6:56pm david:

always remembering
  6:57pm Matt from Springfield:

RIP George McGovern, longtime progressive warrior. Thanks for such a bold and enjoyable show, Clay! Have a good night everyone!

Always remember, then cherish those memories!

  6:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Nice pinano music to close things out.
