  8:28am ?:

This time it wasn't Bill who dropped his pants!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34am Doug Schulkind:

Bill is clearly making mental notes here. ("That guy is good!")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am Doug Schulkind:

"That guy" is, of course, the father of video art and Fluxus genius Nam June Paik. Bless him forever
  8:55am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug & ?. Just sent you an email picture with the same protagonist. Trust you got some sleep before the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

The picture Brian in UK is referring to is here:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Thank you kind Sir!
  9:01am Brian in UK:

The stream is full of flutey juiciness.
  9:02am duke:

"That guy" really was something else. He was doing stuff with old tube TVs that still amaze.
  9:03am duke:

@Brian Good one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

"Flutey juiciness" is a phrase that just may never have ever been uttered before. In English, of course.
  9:06am Paul Sherratt:

Both boxes clicked. Seeing and hearing ! Good afternoon, morning, etc. So Mr Nam didn't get wrapped in the flag ..
  9:07am monica:

morning, doug! dropping trou?
  9:08am lewis:

morning all - 1/2 day today and most of that accompanied by Drummer Some Radio. An excellent way move into the weekend...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy Lady Monica! And you, too, Reverend Sherratt and Colonel Lewis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Cover art for this Brazilian stunner: bit.ly...
  9:12am Brian in UK:

I raise my titfer to you Monica. That's not rude.
  9:14am lewis:

check out the photographer diving for the floor at the beginning of the clip...
  9:14am monica:

And a tip o'the turntable to you, Brian in UK!
  9:15am Parq:

'Llo, all. Fresh out of witty remarks, I fear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Parq
I'm sure you'll get your mojo back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

Paik was always cagey when asked if he staged the incident. "Was I embarrassed," he responded to the obvious question. "Of course not!"
  9:20am still b/p:

Willie be naughty,
Willie be slick,
Willie meet Willie,
And learn a quick trick.
  9:21am lewis:

@doug - was this post-monica?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Doug Schulkind:

So how many years hard labor would Nam June Paik have received in Putin's Russia?

@Lewis
Yes. Trouser dropping in the White House was old hat by then.
  9:24am dcp:

I'm not feeling whitty either...
  9:25am Brian in UK:

.....and old hats were tit for tat.

This is a great set.
  9:26am lewis:

@Doug - indeed. if the Russians want to portray justice they could keep their guilty verdict and have the sentence be "time served": but I am not optimistic.
  9:30am Artie:

Moving, powerful closing statement by Yekaterina Samutsevich. http://bit.ly/RChJuR
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Artists being jailed in Russia, laborers being slaughtered by police in South Africa. Just like old times.
  9:32am trish:

Hey, remember that time when those who were responsible for an oil spill were sentenced to jail? It was all people ever talked about... what with the emphasis on justice and all.
  9:38am dcp:

"just like old times" is right. There was a protest outside the Russian embassy this morning. Guess it didn't work.
  9:39am Parq:

Can I just drop in here and say that the segue from the Brazil set to this Monk was really cool?
  9:40am dcp:

No there's no time for that Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

@trish
That kind of seditious talk will get you in trouble.
  9:43am Brian in UK:

I am of a similar kidney to you, Doug regarding Brazilian sounds. Still working on it.
  9:44am dcp:

oh man, Reyog Ponorogo is just what I needed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

From Wikipedia:

"Reog is a traditional Indonesian dance form. There are many types of Reogs in Indonesia, but the most notable ones are Reog Ponorogo (East Java) and Reog Sunda (West Java). Although both share a similar name, there is no connection nor similar theme among these traditions. Reog Ponorogo seems to be the kind of dance drama that demonstrate physical strength and extravagant lion-peafowl mask and costumes, while Reog Sunda is a lot more like a traditional musical dance drama and comedy."
  9:49am dcp:

Indonesia is at the top of the list of music places to visit for me.
  9:51am Hugo:

Lovely piece of music. East Java, then? Sunda music is very fine, too. I have a box of seven cassettes with an actual flute inside!
  9:52am trish:

Indonesia. A land of islands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

Always shocking to remember that Indonesia is the world's 4th most populous country.

Singapore, to the north, ranks 3rd in density.
It's a city sized country NYC is both more populous and more dense

@kat330
That topless activist will be a guest on the next Seven Second Delay on WFMU, Wednesday at 7pm.
  10:06am kat330:

Actually, Doug, I'm so tardy to the party it's middle of the morning. What I've already accomplished since 6 am would put a Marine to shame. [not really, just keeeding]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
I hear you have shamed countless marines. I consider you a great patriot.
  10:09am kat330:

And yes, we heard that on 7SD Wed. eve. One of her points -- and yes, I realize she has two -- was that men are allowed to go topless so women should, too. However, many men wisely choose not to, and many more *should* wisely choose not to. The same ratio of who should and shouldn't would apply to the female population. :)
  10:10am trish:

NYC as a nation is larger than Singapore - area, density and pop'n.

'Do you have a flaaag??'
  10:11am Dr Watson:

Bring on the yodelling coypus.
  10:11am Parq:

"Were".
  10:13am Hugo:

My memories of Isan are hot and dry. Having a Singha at hand does help, though. As this was during Thai New Year clebrations, drenched farangs were a common sight, not something to raise local eyebrows. One guy entering the hotel we were staying at in Nong Khai was literally dripping.
  10:17am Brian in UK:

Scott has just played some Kink Gong.

Kasparov is a mere pawn of the subversives and the authorities will keep him in check.
  10:34am kat330:

This is great! I just recorded what I call my "Warm Up Mix Up" yesterday -- some overlap here minus instrument.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

I changed the title to today's playlist (it was "Nam that tune") in honor of today's verdict in Moscow.
  10:35am kat330:

Heh! Appropriate on all fronts!
  10:38am Hugo:

The closing statement by one of the defendants in the Russian court case referred to above was quite good, I thought, and correctly predicted the verdict. Not that it takes much to do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

This spectacular Maggie Nicols/Peter Nu record is here:

Agreed, Ricky!
  10:47am ricardo montalban:

Sorta reminds me of Kathy Berberian
  10:48am Hugo:

Doug, you're on to something. Read this:

Was the act of Pussy Riot cynical? There are two kinds of cynicism: the bitter cynicism of the oppressed which unmasks the hypocrisy of those in power, and the cynicism of the oppressors themselves who openly violate their own proclaimed principles. The cynicism of Pussy Riot is of the first kind, while the cynicism of those in power — why not call their authoritarian brutality a Prick Riot — is of the much more ominous second kind.

  10:52am cultural biass:

Even the penises on show are more for men than for women. But I digress.
  10:53am kat330:

@Hugo: Doug's clever renaming works on both the Russian front and the exposed front in the clip. :)
  10:54am kat330:

And there Maggie's another Minnie -- Ripperton.
  10:55am lewis:

@Doug - and it has happened more than once: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phineas_Gage
  10:57am still b/p:

Lewis beat me to the Phineas reference. Interesting that just a few years ago a Daguerreotype of him was freshly identified.
  10:58am ricardo montalban:

I still have yet to hear what Pussy Riot's music sounds like. I'm just too lazy to look up a YouTube video or something. Maybe I'm cynical, but I imagine it being really bland Eastern European rock.
  10:59am lewis:

@sbp - yes the daguerreotype is in the wikipedia link - a bit haunting...

I'm also really surprised that Madonna hasn't attempted to make hay PR wise with their plight. She's really slipping.
  11:04am holland oats:

  11:04am Elton:

Everything on her and about her is slipping.
  11:04am Carmichael:

Hugo, what do you think of Saigon beer? Or Tsingtao?
  11:05am ?:

Madonna already did.

"Pop star Madonna last week performed Pussy Riot-style in a face mask and with the group's name on her back during a packed Moscow gig.

"Everyone has the right to free speech, everywhere in the world. Maria, Katya, Nadia, I pray for you," Madonna said at Tuesday's concert, according to RIA Novosti. "They did something brave with their action. And I am praying for their freedom.""

@Lewis
I remember reading about that OTHER rebar-through-the-head story. If this doesn't scream "Intelligent Design," I don't know what does.
  11:06am Carmichael:

@holland: Just proof that Doug is musically well-rounded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

@Holland
According to my notes (yes, I keep notes) I've played a track from this LP every two years since 2008. See y'all in 2014!!
  11:10am ricardo montalban:

@?: Thanks! I was starting to worry.
I think the first female popstar to come out on their behalf was MIA, then Peaches. Not that lots of folks haven't been supportive.

@Brian: Thanks for the Spike (not through the head)! Another pantsless situation.
  11:16am Hugo:

@Carmichael: Haven't tried any Saigon beer. Tsingtao is an alright lager. In the Phillipines, you can get San Miguel eveywhere.

  11:21am Carmichael:

@Hugo: Thanks for the opinion, not knowing specifically where you reside. Saigon is a dry lager, I think closer to Asahi than Tsingtao. OTOH, I almost exclusively drink ales for some reason. IPAs and pale ales.

Couldn't resist playing "Mind Train" even though I just played it (7 months ago).
  11:24am Webhamster Henry:

I met Nam June Paik a few times, but he kept his pants on.
  11:24am Hugo:

I will be sipping Kenyan beer (and South African wine) for the next two weeks. Not too bad.

IPAs are fine. I've been enjoying Belgian trappist beer lately. Exquisite!
  11:26am Holly in NC:

Mind Train, yay !
Putin & court verdict very big BOO. So angry.
  11:29am Brian in UK:

Those trappists knew how to design ceilings. Have a safe trip Hugo.

Artie: why? was he blind?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

@Web Ham
He must've (should've) been very honored.

@Hi Holly
The Pussy Riot verdict is, in some ways, a huge win. Three courageous activists will lose their liberty for some portion of two years, but the world has gained something huge in the bargain. They will emerge from prison with more power than they entered.

@Artie
Ding ding ding ding, we have a winner... Please stop by the studio after the show for your GTDS Kewpie doll.

A grasshopper goes into a bar. The 'tender says, "Say, we have a drink named after you!" The 'hopper reples: "You have a drink called Bob?"
  11:33am kat330:

[not after the Kewpie, Artie, you just brought that old chestnut to mind -- train ]
  11:33am ricardo montalban:

@Doug: in some ways, I think you're right re; Pussy Riot, in that it sort of shines a big spotlight on Putin as the dictator that he is.
  11:34am Brian in UK:

This is a new one on me.
Igor Kim, told the BBC News website from Moscow: "Shouting and screaming and spreading hate in Church is unacceptable and is contrary with Christian ethics."
  11:35am Alex in Illinois:

Soo s p ac ey! I'm glad the streetcar never arrived, because it probably was not as much fun as this Mind Train. But that house was not such a bad place to wait for it.
