Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from July 24, 2012 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

northguineahills:

The only other hardcore pipes I've heard was Screamin' McGregor, and it was remixed by dj Speedranch into an almost hardcore techno track. So, in the end, there were blazing guitars, pipes, and adrenalized beats.

Hey, is this the recording that was recorded in a van, down by the river, down by this concert?

  4:33pm
Mike East:

was just reading in the New Yorker that a dude from Sha Na Na is now a top Forensic Linguist.
  4:34pm
unclear:

forensic linguist=master of dead tongues?
  4:38pm
Mike East:

they give testimony at trials saying, for example, that the ransom note was likely written by someone from Akron, OH because they use the term "Devil Strip" for the area of grass between the sidewalk and the street.
  4:38pm
clearer now:

nice work if you can get it, I s'pose
  4:38pm
BSI:

It would be dreadful to be a bottom forensic linguist. I assume.
  4:41pm
Cheri Pi:

listeniing to that stupid food show on NPR, the hosts drove all over Arkansas looking for "Arkansas Wedding Cake." turns out it was just a local term for white bread... how anticlimactic is that?
  4:43pm
Tom G:

NPR couldn't just google that?
  4:43pm
fred von helsing:

"Arkansas Wedding Cake" nudge wink
  4:44pm
NPR:

we're a little short of funds these days...can't afford the internet...how are we typing this, I wonder?
  4:44pm
Ike:

Re: the New Yorker article about forensic linguists: sounds like some forensic linguists are just in it for the trial cash. You can't really deduce anything concrete from the way most people use language, IMO, except in unusual cases like "devil strip." Esp. if you can chat online with people from all over the world and get your language influenced and scrambled by that.
  4:44pm
Cheri Pi:

exactly, Tom G/ Exactly FvH

I wonder what the Foren-linguist would have to say of our board-speak?
  4:48pm

FRANCIS BEBEY! LOVE . . . reading one of his books now :)
  4:49pm

I hope his kids don't throw out his beloved lps, they're probably sitting out on the curb right now, along with all his shag rug collection
  4:56pm

Is NPR letting their interns do more than write Op-ed pieces on music?
  5:00pm

Cheri Pi:

from the interwebs re:Dinah Shore "Here's the story as described by fan Ray Seda. (Editor's note: Ray mistakenly placed the dance on the Mike Douglas show.)

On this particular occasion, the guest on the show was Sherman Hemsley, the guy that played the character "George Jefferson" on the shows "The Jeffersons" and "All in the Family." On that occasion he was going to perform a dance. To our shock and amazement, the music he danced to was none other than Proclamation from The Power and the Glory! After his dance, the host was laughing and asked what kind of music that was. Sherman then proceeded to give a 5 minute speech on Gentle Giant. The host stopped laughing when he realized that Sherman was 100% serious about Gentle Giant!

Boy was that a weird scene! :
  5:06pm

Sherman was an huge prog rock fan. Gong’s Daevid Allen tells a great story about Sherman here: dangerousminds.net/comments/weezy_get_me_some_lsd_george_jefferson_is_a_big_prog_rock_fan
