Listener comments!

  12:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

Most welcoming "Sweet Caroline" a la steel drums!
Heyyyyyy Amanda!
  12:01pm
Dervish:

Screw Calgon, Nazario Scenario take me away.
  12:02pm
Carmichael:

Hi Amanda.
  12:03pm
G:

You weren't on the hompage yet when Ken signed off...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm
Amanda:

How do you talk to a listener? Hi all!
  12:03pm
G:

You're there now :-)
  12:04pm
john:

woooooooooooooooooo-hoooooooooot!
  12:05pm
john:

Hey Amanda, your archived shows aren't on WFMU's iPhone app. That bums me out.
  12:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

Didn't know Dave Edmunds sang this one!
  12:07pm
Carmichael:

Oooohhh, you're in that kind of musical mood today, Amanda. This is going to be fun! Repeat When Necessary is a fantastic Edmunds album. And Sweet Little Lisa is the best song on that album.
  12:11pm
SteveL:

OK! Ready to go. Homemade pizza lunch at the desk with Amanda! Work does NOT suck today.
  12:13pm
Van in DC:

Made it! Hi Amanda and everyone
  12:16pm
Van in DC:

Wow, I made it just in time! :)
  12:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

80s Steve Winwood sing-along! That era seems to be good for singing along to.
Hi Van!
  12:18pm
john:

Amanda doing karaoke captures everything I love about WFMU. Best radio station ever. I'm gonna cry.
  12:19pm
Doug S.:

Gotta be Jim Keltner on drums. (OK, that's how my mind works.)
  12:20pm
Van in DC:

Hi Matt!
  12:21pm
SteveL:

John: What you said.
  12:22pm
Van in DC:

Any of you up in NY / NJ able to see the ships coming in for Fleet Week?
  12:23pm
Spencer:

Arf arf Amanda, too hot for dogs over here. Gonna find a shady place, humans think walking is good. Bah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Amanda:

Wow! All these nice folks here today. Pleased to see you. @john, I am sorry to hear that -- maybe Doug has some insight into this? Doug? Maybe it's just a good incentive to listen live.
  12:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: How's the wife doing after that accident?
  12:25pm
Brian in UK:

Anyone seen a recalcitrant beagle?
  12:26pm
G:

When I lived in Staten Island for years, you always knew about Fleet Week from all the uniformed people in the ferry terminal waiting room. Living in Brooklyn more recently, to know about it I need to see/hear a media mention, or be in a touristy area of Mahattan.
  12:27pm
G:

Woot! Badfinger!
  12:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

WOOOOO!!! No Matter What!!!
Love this one, in fact I think it deserves the abbreviation NMW. Anyone *truly* with it should know what it means.
  12:28pm
Doug S.:

Thanks for asking Matt. I will be leaving to retrieve her from hospital in about an hour. (I said that in a British accent.)
  12:28pm
Carmichael:

Here's your sing-along song right here, my friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Amanda:

Brian -- yes, I know one recalcitrant Beagle very well in fact
  12:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Good to know! Retrieve away, good sir! Right 'o!
(visualize me with a red coat, on a horse, in addition to accent)
  12:30pm
G:

I hope the Powers That Be have determined that webstreaming shows are not yet Appworthy :-(
  12:31pm
G:

should be "have not determined"
  12:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: That's true, I don't sing well, but I would totally enjoy singing along to NMW. I DO sing along to that in private, but I just may risk my reputation by performing it in public.
  12:31pm
efd:

@john (and Amanda), none of the shows on the alternate streams are on the app -- and neither are fill-ins on WFMU proper. I'm not sure why that is, but I'd guess it has something to do with the way those shows/links are stored in the database.
  12:34pm
Doug S.:

@G
The Drummer stream IS on the WFMU iPhone app! You can't access the archives yet, but you can indeed hear this stream. (Did that answer your question?)
  12:34pm
Brian in UK:

Jeez Doug. Best wishes fella. (Fake American accent)
  12:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

@efd: I got the WFMU app for my iPad not to long ago--it seems not so good for listening to Archives. Only the regular shows, and only 3 or so of the most recent Archives. Maybe there's a way to access more, so I'll have to explore that.
  12:35pm
Doug S.:

Look for the bongos icon (of course).

@Brian in UK
Thanks chum.
  12:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

I do like how you can "dial up" all the webstreams with the touch of a button; easier than clicking a different link on the main webpage. That's only the live streams though.
  12:36pm
Console:

Please don't make me take the pepsi chaellenge :)
  12:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

Amanda: a REAL person, in REAL time! We certainly love ya for it!

And for your consideration--keep that coffee far enough from the console!
@Console: Will Coke, or Pepsi kill you faster? :)
  12:42pm
Brian in UK:

Dept S 'Is Vic There? I think the title comes from a Monty Python track with a 'phone-in with a crossed line. Matching Tie & Hankerchief? Very funny. The double groove album ofcourse.
  12:45pm
SteveL:

The Pepsi Syndrome

Both Coke and Pepsi are lethal, and so's beer, but at least with beer I don't care so much as the life flickers from my eyes.
  12:49pm
john:

In the last six months I've spilled coffee on my laptop, blueberry juice on my phone and a smoothie on my keyboard. I need a sippy cup.
  12:54pm
Console:

@john: or at least not a tippy cup
  12:57pm
Carmichael:

@Brian: Matching Tie & Handkerchief always threw my friends off. The 1st 3-sided LP.
  1:03pm
Carmichael:

I heard a concert reviewer once say that Blue Cheer was so loud, they turned the air into cottage cheese.
  1:04pm
Urologist:

Been there, done that.
  1:10pm
efd:

I should have been more clear in my response that I was referring to *archived* fill-ins and webstream shows. As Doug points out you certainly can listen live to this and the other alternate streams via the WFMU app.
  1:17pm
kat330:

On the topic of FMU tech stuff: Two recent-ish developments I've noticed are whenever I click to open a live playlist, my digital radio stream halts. The other dingus is we can no longer hit an archive's .mp3 and have it start to play in iTunes automatically as we used to. This may be because I've been playing with my PC's sounds while doing some home recording.
  1:18pm
ndbob:

afternoon Amanda and everyone!
  1:18pm
kat330:

Oh, and Hi, Amanda and all you lovely Friends in My Universe! :)
  1:21pm
john:

The thing is, most of these incidents involved travel mugs or unspillable-like glasses.

I've caught the stream on the app and loved it. Just was surprised that the archives on the app only included current shows. Would love to have access to old shows by, say, Amanda and Hatch and Doug and...everyone (sweeping gesture w/ both arms).

Also, is Bitch Magnet coming up in this set?
  1:21pm
Van in DC:

app, bah! I'm holding out for the cranial implant, and being able to switch streams with a nose twitch. Of course, trying to drive with all the comments streaming inside my retinas might be a little difficult.
  1:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Slade cover!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Amanda:

Hey kat! Hey ndbob! I'm very impressed with the amount of tech-support-related questions on this playlist so far that I can't even begin to answer.
  1:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Van: Yeah, integrating the audio within us would be one thing, but all those comments as well? That could be a PROBLEM...
  1:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

Obviously!

I'm liking this! And the name: Jesus H Christ & The Four HoRNSmen of the Apocalypse!!
  1:27pm
Van in DC:

Quick shoutout of congratulations to Eliza Rickman, who performed on Julie's show not all that long ago, for her "Pretty Little Head" being NPR's "Song of the Day"! (happy b/c I helped her on Kickstarter :) )
  1:29pm
kat330:

Well, the stream halting when I click open a live playlist is certainly a brand new mystery. Happened every time today. The archives problem can be solved by entering the URL I'm redirected to in the iTunes "Open Stream" field, but previously it the archive would just start up in iT immediately.
  1:32pm
kat330:

Been a nice listen today: Lowe and Badfinger, Marianne and Miles -- thanks!
  1:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

That's great news for Eliza! Hopefully that will lead to more exposure for her.
  1:36pm
SteveL:

If I had to pick one pop band to listen to forever, it would be Sugar.
  1:36pm
kat330:

Mouldy Sugar, yumm!

  1:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

Good Buddy Holly, short and sweet.
And Shonen Knife! Love the rhythm of this song.
  1:48pm
Danne D:

Hiya AmNazz and AmNazztics :)

Ugh, I'm a little late and see Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds topping the board *sigh*
  1:49pm
Brian in UK:

@SteveL I dug out Copper Blue recently, it was like starting out again. I forgot how good a record it is.
Bye the bye, have you heard him on Hyacinths & Thistles by The Sixths. Wonderful.
  1:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Amanda: Btw, also love the bed music you had right before this set. What is that smoky brass and orchestral instrumental you always play in the middle of the Scenario?
  1:49pm
Carmichael:

It sounds like she's riding the storm out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Amanda:

I don't care how many times I've played/listened to/other people have played "Someone To Love." I DON'T CARE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
Amanda:

Brian, yes, I love that 6ths album. Love.

@MfS, it's the London Philharmonic playing "Maybe" from the musical Annie.

Hi Danne! You have to get up pretty early in the afternoon to catch the pub rock sets, I guess
  1:52pm
kat330:

Ooops, away in the kitchen just now, NGH. And yes, SteveL, I can come close to full agreement on that, but then I think about so many others. :)
  1:53pm
kat330:

@Brian: I've particular affection for Sugar's "If I can't change your mind."
  1:54pm
Brian in UK:

"No one else will" Never heard of The Byrds!!
  1:55pm
ndbob:

nice song here!
  1:57pm
kat330:

@Brian: You're losing me. I bet I'm supposed to know some bit of music lore everyone else knows?
  1:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Amanda! Not so familiar with the Annie musical so I was wondering what tune that might be.
  1:58pm
kat330:

Heh, this one's a hoot! My family used to sing this chestnut in full harmony.
  1:59pm
SteveL:

Brian: I have not heard that. I will find it.
Kat: That's an amazing song. Most moving breakup/don't break up song I've ever heard.
  2:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: AmNazzatics! (It can double as AmNazz-addicts! :)

Yeah, unless you grab lunch way early or wait until after 12, it takes skill to catch the beginning of the Nazario Scenario live.
  2:03pm
Brian in UK:

kat330 jangly guitar that's all.
Steve L he only plays on one track but it is a complete surprise. Guesting on Stephin Merritt, master song writers album in one of his many guises
  2:03pm
Danne D:

@kat and @brian - gotta find a tape deck to play my copy of copper blue now...
  2:04pm
Danne D:

Hmm so is Amnazzics or Amnazzatics better?
  2:04pm
kat330:

Do it, Danne D!
  2:04pm
Carmichael:

Since someone brought up lunch, I feel compelled to apologize for my huge Indian food error of last week. I described chickpeas in red curry sauce as Aloo Gobi, when clearly the correct name is Chana Masala. Aloo Gobi is cauliflower and diced potatoes in a yellow curry and cardomom sauce. My bad, Indian food bro's.
  2:05pm
Carmichael:

@Danne: I prefer "Nazarenes".
  2:05pm
Danne D:

Nazzarenes?
  2:05pm
Brian in UK:

Pronounced "Live-a birds"
  2:06pm
Danne D:

Nazzanistas?
  2:06pm
kat330:

We fans here have a pleasant AmNazia -- we forget what we've been doing and have to do and just enjoy a listen. :)
  2:08pm
kat330:

@Carm: You are forgiven. My hunaja brought home some wonderful goodies from Finland: smoked salmon, great rye breads, etc. But I was in the kitchen with some early prep work for tonight's fish tacos, a 7SD go-with staple.

Danne D:

Crowded House :)
  2:09pm

@Brian: With few exceptions, it's "W" east of the Mississippi and "K" in the west. http://tinyurl.com/6soh6x5
  2:16pm
Brian in UK:

Thanks Gaylord. Thought it might be the Pecos but thats my cowboy fantasy!!
  2:20pm
Gaylord Fields:

WFMU's call sign, demystified: "W" = because the station is west of the Mississippi; "FM" = our frequency is modulated for your convenience; "U" for our Swedish-inspired former benefactor, Upsala College, which owned the station's license until 1995.
  2:21pm
kat330:

Can any research whiz here discover when "Tell Me Why" (the Ivy Twines) first appeared in the American songbook? I found something that said the lyrics were by "Unknown." My mother and uncle taught me the song along with "Row Row Row Your Boat," "Oh, How Lovely Is the Evening," etc., but I couldn't find anything earlier than Pat Benatar in my search.
  2:22pm

@Amanda :) You're like the imaginary radio friend I had in my youth, except you're real and I'm not young anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
Amanda:

Meh, everyone's young relative to someone.
  2:34pm

@kat: Tell Me Why was originally recorded in '56 by Norman Fox & the Rob Roys. It was written by Don Carter and Marshal "Buzzy" Helfand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Amanda:

(I mean: What? You're not???)
  2:35pm
Doug S.:

Tnx kat330!
  2:36pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Danne D: I initially misread what you wrote as "You're like the imaginary radio friend I had in my mouth." I was going to suggest you have a dentist look at your fillings.
  2:36pm
Van in DC:

imaginary radio friend. Makes me think of yesterday's GTDS picture.
  2:37pm
G:

@Gaylord: That was a different Danny. REDRUM!
  2:37pm
Danne D:

@Gaylord LOL - I have enough fillings to get radio reception, sadly.

In my time around FMU I've never really had an inkling to have a show and Amanda makes that all the much more unnecessary as she plays so much stuff I probably would.
  2:38pm
Danne D:

For example this is certainly my favorite ELO song.
  2:38pm
kat330:

@Carm: Seriously? I had thought it was an old standard, like "Down By the Old Mill Stream". That title is a bit common, so wonder if it's the same one I'm thinking of and DQE sang. Half expect it to be in Neil Young's new record. ;)
  2:42pm
kat330:

My search led me to this Isaac Asimov use of the lyrics: http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/54414

Woody!

@kat: You may be right. Hold on ...
  2:42pm

Cracking show Amanda.

I'm guessing Mrs JS was kept in overnight for observation. Rest and caring are the orders of the day.
  2:42pm
kat330:

Woody! Speaking of the great American songbook!
  2:44pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Carmichael: Completely different song, the Norman Fox "Tell Me Why," later covered by the Belmonts. The DQE song is a traditional song.
  2:46pm
kat330:

@Gaylord: OK, that's what I thought, and probably public domain then.
  2:48pm
Van in DC:

Glad you got the Mazzy Star in Amanda :)
  2:48pm
Gaylord Fields:

@kat330: Definitely a P.D. song, and as old as the hills (and the people who inhabited them).
  2:49pm
P.D.:

ASCAP, eat your heart out.
  2:50pm
Carmichael:

@kat & Gaylord: Yep, different song. The DQE song is referred to as "a traditional lullaby", though not where I come from.
  2:51pm
Gaylord Fields:

My three-step plan:
Step 1: Change initials to "P.D."
Step 2: ???
Step 3: PROFIT!
  2:52pm
kat330:

Well, my people are longtime hill people, so guess that's why I was taught it. :)
  2:52pm
ASCAP:

@Gaylord: We have an extremely high-level committee working on that.
  2:52pm
Gaylord Fields:

People will be calling me "Paylord Deals" afterward, so I may as well make it official.
  2:53pm
Gaylord Fields:

What arguments, Amanda? This is a lovefest!
  2:53pm
kat330:

First step is to collect royalties from Mr. Young, eh?
  2:54pm
