Raleigh Moncrief live at WFMU

If you've dug the sound of new records by Ganglians and Dirty Projectors, or the guitar work in Marnie Stern's band, then you're already a fan of Raleigh Moncrief's work. The Sacramento-based producer took the web by storm with his beat-oriented Combed Over Chrome EP on the Obstructive Vibrations netlabel. Last year, he signed with Anticon to release Watered Lawn, a fantastically eclectic LP of electronic soul and psychedelic folk-hop.

Listener comments!

  9:03am PKNY:

Props on setting it off with Pigmeat Markham!
  9:03am Dead Corporate Eyes:

yuh huh? hi Jason
  9:03am Dafydd:

Peace Brother!
  9:06am Caryn:

Man, I need to get that Early Rappers collection... If even half the stuff is as good as Pigmeat Markham, it'll be awesome.
  9:07am dc pat:

Jason, I sure hope you're planning a bike-themed show too. I missed Meghan's...
  9:07am Andrew Waterloo:

Loved that Pigmeat Markham track :)
  9:12am yayson:

this reminds me of my favorite folk song about JB
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyEEXxHMLzQ
  9:19am earwax:

Love this Alice Coltrane track
  9:20am earwax:

Off to a great start, as always, Jason
  9:20am still b/p:

Pigmeat apparently asked and got to play "de judge" on R&M Laugh-In for a season after the show started doing its recurring judge sketches with his signature line. It later became a Sammy Davis thing on the show.
  9:20am northguineahills:

Sweet, they reissued Alice Coltrane!
  9:20am Parq:

Jason, this whole first set is about 40 minutes past brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am jason:

g'mornin everyone, permission to speak freely has been granted!
  9:22am Nathan:

I woke up this morning and got out of bed with such bad case of hemorrhoids that they didn't get out of bed till I got to the kitchen.
  9:23am Nathan:

Was that too freely?
  9:26am ausmanx:

yes, nathan, i think so... although the film i'm working on tonight is training cops in dna analysis with dried semen and urine samples, so you're keeping the theme alive, really...
  9:28am Ace:

Speak Frehley, but be careful...it is a complex dialect calibrated to advanced thinking.
  9:28am dc pat:

jason.....update the playlist.....what is this?.....
  9:29am dc pat:

is this Alice still??
  9:29am dc pat:

oh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am jason:

whoops! Jüppala Kääpiö, DC Pat
  9:29am Nathan:

Alice doesn't live here anymore.
  9:30am Dafydd:

Alice who?
  9:30am Nathan:

All those umlauts take time.
  9:32am Nathan:

I have seen this Ramaya Monkey Chant live and in Bali. It was pretty amazing.
  9:33am Donovan:

Is this the chant from the beginning of the movie, baraka?
  9:33am trolly:

I believe the lyrics for the backing vocals are 'chaka chaka chaka chaka chaka chaka chaka'
  9:34am dc pat:

man, this is killing. Just what I was looking for.. Bali is #2 on my list of places to visit....just after Youngstown, OH...
  9:34am BSI:

Yep, that very Kecak record was the first time I ever heard this stuff. Splendid.
  9:35am northguineahills:

Yeah, this chant (different recording, I believe), is featured in Baraka.
  9:35am Cecile:

Jason! Where are you off to?
  9:35am dc pat:

this is way more interesting than any other version I've heard.
  9:36am Nathan:

And that picture is pretty much how it looked... though in colour. It was like being in Koyaanisqatsi.
  9:36am Andy in Berlin:

I had the Elektra Explorer recording of the Monkey Chant. Great!
  9:37am r i s k y:

YESSSS!!!!
  9:37am dc pat:

Nathan: how do you get to see this stuff, is it real touristy now, tickets and such? Or is it still relatively pristine?
  9:38am Andy in Berlin:

I seem to remember they used it in Satyricon for the sound of the stadium audience for the Minataur.
  9:39am Cecile:

why do you want to go to Youngstown, DCP?
  9:39am Andy in Berlin:

Actually looking at the picture on that record cover, it reminds me of the last time I was at a Twisted Sister concert.
  9:39am Yair Yona:

That sounds like many Jaap Blonks!
  9:40am Cecile:

it sounds like monkey haka to me!
  9:43am dc pat:

Cecile: i make joke. That's actually the last place on earth I need to go. I played a gig there once and was sufficiently creeped out to never want to return... actually, come to think of it, I did return for a protest...didn't have fun then either.
  9:43am Cecile:

ah, because Bali is a beautiful place from what I've seen...
  9:44am Cecile:

even people in Beaver Falls, PA, which is pretty dire are creeped out about Youngstown.
  9:45am webbie:

kecak ganda sari -> thonghuad faited -> steve lacy. brilliant!
  9:45am Nathan:

@DC Pat: Depends on where you go... it's all vaguely touristy around Kuta Beach / Legian / Seminyak / Ubud but we went just after the bombings so it was fairly empty. We caught the Monkey Chant at a small temple called Pura Uluwatu on the south coast overlooking the ocean. There are many pristine areas of Bali and if you travel a bit you soon leave the tourists behind.
  9:46am Cecile:

ITA, webbie.
  9:46am Dead Corporate Eyes:

ah, first coat of paint is done. now I get to huff fumes and watch it dry. how's everybody doing today? huh?
  9:48am northguineahills:

RHCP cover?
  9:49am Cecile:

yeah.
They still suck.
  9:50am Cheri Pi:

I just LOL'd really loud in my cube.
  9:50am dc pat:

ah, I see...
  9:50am Cecile:

wow this is terrible.

He's great, but these are the worst lyrics ever.
  9:51am Cheri Pi:

RHCP is the worst band on earth-after the Eagles.
  9:52am john:

hahahaha "chug a lug me" might be the best lyric ever...
  9:53am Cecile:

Oh, Cheri, I think I have to agree with you.
  9:53am dc pat:

I liked some of there first LP but that's about it.
  9:54am Mike East:

It'd be better as "what I'd like is I'd like to hug and kiss you"
  9:54am Cecile:

Jason, why are you leaving us?
  9:54am Nathan:

What you guys talkin' about.. Hotel Californication was a great album!
  9:54am Cecile:

me, too, dcp.
I saw them live and despised them.
  9:55am Cecile:

hahahahahaha, nathan
  9:55am Cheri Pi:

Jason-did I insult you? Is that why you're leaving?
  9:55am BSI:

Sounds about right. I scored my copy of the Kecak LP around 1988...
  9:56am Cheri Pi:

Be careful Nathan-what you ask for...hahahahahaha
  9:56am Cecile:

Cheri, it's because I eat too loud.
(fotc joke.)
  9:58am Cheri Pi:

Perhaps bands should do the spoken word test-before they commit a song to tape; you know-to see if their lyrics still hold water when "spoken aloud by the human voice"
  10:01am Cecile:

remember to tell them you know lawyers and police officers and you know how to read. They should get you off.
  10:02am KevinBK:

I had jury duty too.
But I was dismissed because I am unable to balance the testimony of a police officer and a citizen.
  10:03am KevinBK:

How do you know a cop is lying?
  10:03am dc pat:

OK, just ordered the Kecak album. (had a gift card burning a hole in my but)
  10:03am KevinBK:

Their lips are moving
  10:04am dc pat:

I meant "a hole in my, but I can't talk about this right now..."
  10:08am Dead Corporate Eyes:

haha dcp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am jason:

hey Cheri and Cecile, thanks for asking but Talk's Cheap's not goin anywhere bit.ly...
  10:12am Cecile:

oh, exciting! School will be great.
  10:12am Cheri Pi:

Oh thank christ! I thought you were going up north to "Stay with family"
  10:14am Dead Corporate Eyes:

wow, Jason, sounds like you got a full plate.
  10:18am Joe D.:

Jason Sigal is a man of many hustles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am jason:

i hope some of you are listening w/ subwoofers to this Moncrief set
  10:33am Nathan:

What's up with Sacramento lately? Something in the water.. Death Grips and this dude with their fucked up beats. Me likey.
  10:34am northguineahills:

Can't put my subs on until after noon in my bldg. :(

(as per agreement w/ the downstairs neighbors)
  10:35am BSI:

Working on a surgical implant subwoof. Will keep everyone posted.
  10:40am Nathan:

*Applause*
  10:45am glenn:

i beseech you - please stop saying literally.
  10:47am northguineahills:

what if I figuratively say literally?
  10:48am glenn:

hmmmmmmm. i'm ambivalent.
  10:49am Berg:

literally vs figuratively http://xkcd.com/725/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am california:

it's the Cali sound
  10:52am northguineahills:

Nice Berg, I missed that one.
  11:03am BSI:

aciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid.......!
  11:04am northguineahills:

lowering the pH....
  11:15am dc pat:

Cavendish wins Stage 5 of the Giro....since we were all bike-oriented earlier this morning....
  11:46am dc pat:

leave it to bike racing to kill the conversation...
  11:47am dc pat:

wow, Elliot Sharp + Debbie Harry = nice
  11:48am Deepak:

Debbie Debbie Debbie
  11:49am Cecile:

I hate to be the grump here, but I guess I am just not a fan of most of this modern torch singing. Playing is great, singing is great, but uh, I dunno.
  11:50am Cecile:

vive l'difference!
  11:50am northguineahills:

Never thought I'd see Elliot Sharp and Debbie Harry together.

...and Cecile, I concur...........
  11:54am Leigh:

That's Emily Post's rule! No one ever believes me.
