Options Brian Turner: Playlist from April 3, 2012 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Twerps  Live in the WFMU studio   Options Engineered by Ernie Indradat    Forming late 2008 around charismatic guitarist/vocalist Marty Frawley (son of Paul Kelly & the Dots member Maurice Frawley) and bassist Rick Milovanovic, Twerps have quickly risen to become one of Melbourne’s favourite pop bands. They’ve scored support slots for the likes of Deerhunter, the Bats, Yo La Tengo, Black Lips, Thee Oh Sees and Robert Forster. They play their own brand of warm and incredibly infectious pop, with elements of the 80s Flying Nun sound and 90s lo-fi. Marty’s cheeky but heartfelt songs are complemented by the crystalline guitar lines of guitarist Julia MacFarlane (ex Batrider). Lineup today includes Dion Nania on bass, Patrick O'Neill on drums. Thanks to Chapter and Underwater Peoples for hanging too. More info here    1:00:10 (Pop‑up)

feedtime  Live in the WFMU studio   Options Engineered by Juan Aboites    Solid peers of other down-and-scuzzy Oz combos like Thug, King Snake Roost, Bloodloss and Grong Grong, Sydney's legendary feedtime ripped through the 1980's and certainly gave raw power to the seeds of Seattle (in fact Butch Vig produced the band's last LP way before Nirvana used him). While feedtime made some headway in the USA thanks to Rough Trade distribution, they disappeared seemingly right as their sound sprouted its heirs, and they even resurfaced for a short bit in the mid '90's. Fast forward to their next return in 2012: Sub Pop has issued a 4 disc box of the band's output called the Aberrant Years, S-S Records has a collection of unreleased tracks (Today Is Friday) and feedtime tour the USA and hit Brian's show today! They slaughtered all in their wake last week in the NYC area on March 29th at Death By Audio, March 31st at the Cake Shop, and April 1st at Maxwells. feedtime = Allen, Rick, Tom. Some vocal assist from Carmel. First NYC shows! First radio session! More info at the Sub Pop page. S-S Records page.   3:11pm Cheri Pi:

What an insult! What's the story behind this song BT?
  3:11pm Matt from Springfield:

Piss off, Mr. Disco!
  3:12pm Matt from Springfield:

(aside: I only have a two-pair (you and you), don't know if Braveness23 is bluffing or not--I'd better fold now).
  3:12pm Mr Donut:

Hey I like Soggy
  3:16pm Cheri Pi:

OMG today is feedtime DAY!!!
  3:17pm Cecile:

  3:18pm Cecile:

Oh, well, have fun for me.
  3:18pm Braveness23:

damn, I just fed.
  3:18pm paula pc:

am enjoying today's Aus/NZ focus IMMENSELY
  3:19pm Cheri Pi:

BT; your header should really say TWERPS *plus* feedtime. Cecile, I'm gonna miss it too most likely, see ya in the archives.
  3:19pm Cecile:

oh, you bet.
  3:20pm Cecile:

Are they live in the studio?
Can you give them all handshakes for me?
  3:20pm JDELZ:

Heyyy Steve! Got around the firewall??
  3:20pm Cheri Pi:

"Hey Crap Crab " sounds like something Mark E Smith would say.
  3:21pm Cheri Pi:

Cecile, I think they recorded it previously, there were some pix on FB of them in the studio a few days ago.
  3:21pm drr:

Cheri, it really does!
  3:22pm Cecile:

awwwwwww. *pouts*

cool, Brian!
  3:22pm drr:

Weirdly my old band had a song that was a fake Fall song, and it was called "Crap Crafts In Camp".
  3:23pm Cecile:

the phrase "crash crab" is going through my head.
  3:23pm paula pc:

@ Cecile -- agreed, agreed Brian! I don't remember the last time I felt so much joy at a show.
  3:23pm Cecile:

Play some more X.
  3:24pm Matt from Springfield:

Sadly I will be leaving early today as well (to catch another show--the Moody Blues), but I so want to hear this Archive!
(I'll bring some secondhand pot smoke to share with the comments tomorrow...)
  3:25pm Cecile:

we should all show up here after Duane's show and yammer while we play the archives.
  3:25pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

ha ha, Matt, I remember buying a big chunk of hash at a Moody Blues show back in like 1986!
  3:25pm Cheri Pi:

that is weird, drr! Maybe our host will play a Fall song so we can compare (for science)
  3:25pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: I'll be joining you later in the Archives too!
@paula: I enjoy Aus/NZ rock immensely as well--a downright Antipodean Day today.
  3:25pm Cecile:

Or something from that Grinderman guy's first band. I think it was called Wings.
  3:26pm tim from champaign:

Aussie-A-Mania has been running wild in Illinois too. Electric Jellyfish were in Champaign and Chicago last week as well as feedtime in Chicago. I heard the feedtime show in Cicago was pretty ripping.
  3:26pm Cecile:

or World Party or something.
  3:26pm Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Ha ha, excellent! Sounds like the place!
  3:26pm Cecile:

tim, I could see them every night for a week. It was like food or sun.
  3:27pm Cheri Pi:

party in the archives, bring chickens.
  3:28pm Cheri Pi:

Oh-aussies Whitehorse will be coming to Cincinnati in June, can you believe that????
  3:28pm Cecile:

Great, 3pm tomorrow, 2 pm CDT.
All are not only welcomed, but urged to attend.
  3:30pm Cecile:

the dollar must truly be in the tank, Cheri.
  3:30pm kat330:

I'll be around for feedtime, BT. Squirrels outside just had theirs.
@Matt: Moody Blues, eh? Be sure to say ciao before you Go Now.
  3:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Ciao before Now, for sure.
Sounds like an Archive party!
  3:33pm Cheri Pi:

you aren't whistling dixie Cecile, the dollar is only worth .83 yen and about .75 euro.
  3:34pm Matt from Springfield:

For Poeticking Out Loud...
  3:36pm kat330:

Was that song behind the meaning of Give the Drummer Some? ;)
  3:36pm Jack Detroit:

dang, no Feedtime in Detroit? :( I would have got a case of Coopers!
  3:37pm Cecile:

Jack Detroit, I suspect they will be back if someone can arrange it. They were completely bowled over by their reception here.
  3:37pm Jack Detroit:

Play some "Hell Crab City" from Sydney.
  3:37pm Matt from Springfield:

Give The Drum The Drummer (GTDTD)
  3:38pm Matt from Springfield:

@Jack: Coopers Ale? That is a fine Aussie brew! I'm a fan!
Avatar 3:40pm BT:

I think Austin and LA are the only feedtime shows after today.
  3:41pm Jack Detroit:

@Matt, yeah, my local in Detroit can get it. I'm from Sydney so it brings back memories!
  3:41pm Cecile:

yes, that's right.
But surely there's interest for another tour before 20 more years passes.
  3:42pm Cheri Pi:

I will sign a petition to that effect, we want you nationwide feedtime, I know you're reading this.
  3:44pm Jack Detroit:

*Trivia* I got laid for the first time at a Feedtime show. :) True story!! 1984.
  3:45pm Cheri Pi:

no way!!!
  3:45pm Jack Detroit:

well......after the show. :)
  3:46pm Cheri Pi:

I wonder if anyone will get laid after hearing them in the archives?
  3:46pm Deed Runlea:

nice bad times cover!
  3:46pm Jack's 1st:

I'm still waiting for you to call.
  3:47pm Cecile:

Jack Detroit, I lived down in Sydney for about a year in between 75-76. Went to HS in Caringbah.
  3:48pm Jack Detroit:

@ Jack's 1st :)
  3:48pm kat330:

If the chickens join in, some eggs may be laid.
  3:49pm Matt from Springfield:

@Jack 3:41: Bottoms up, mate!

Nice, sunny poolside of shredding noise and metal this past block. Excellent stuff for livening up your typical workday.
  3:50pm Matt from Springfield:

LOL kat! Connecting our scattered dots and bringing them back home!
  3:51pm Martha:

Agreed - v. nice cover of "Streets of Iron" -
  3:52pm kat330:

Matt, you are so stoked, my man -- I don't think you need to pick up any secondhand at the concert. You're high on anticipation. :)
  3:53pm Humblepye:

any chance yer gonna spin a cut off that new mount carmel release, bt?
  3:55pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: True dat!
Also high on anticipation for...JANDEK! :D
Avatar 3:56pm BT:

I wanna -- we'll see today we gots two guests comin up....too many good records out this week! The MC is great!
  4:02pm Matt from Springfield:

Ahhh, cool jangly sound. I'll have to leave after a couple of these, but I look forward to checking out this wonderful Archive!
  4:07pm kata:

this is supercool !
  4:08pm Cecile:

Probably. ha.

But I liked both sides of the Aussie/NZ musical coin back then. And still do.
  4:08pm Jack Detroit:

I do too!
  4:09pm Braveness23:

digging it
  4:10pm Cecile:

even the softer stuff has a little bit of an edge to it. Snarky humor or a spiky guitar sound.
  4:14pm paula pc:

my favorite unison pop singers may be the down under ones, cf this twerps set
  4:15pm paula pc:

maybe I mean viz this twerps set
  4:16pm Chris from DC:

Hits the spot today. Great.
  4:25pm Cheri Pi:

Good job my son, this is some of your best work here today. *Sniff* I'm so proud.
  4:25pm Mike East:

Hey I remember this song was played on WFMU sometime, somewhere. Sounding very nice.
  4:27pm Cecile:

*sings* don't ever go change and rearrange your mind, your mind, your mind...
  4:28pm Braveness23:

oh crap, I see a 12 string rickenbacker in my future.
  4:30pm Cheri Pi:

I've been thinking about 12 strings recently too Braveness23.
  4:31pm Braveness23:

I still haven't heard you rock out on your les paul. What's up with that?
  4:32pm Cheri Pi:

that's really funny. I can play On the banks of the Ohio.
  4:32pm βrian:

That like chiroptera night?
  4:33pm Cheri Pi:

Cecile-I so love that song by the Clean.
  4:35pm Cheri Pi:

this rules.
  4:35pm Cecile:

it is a great one.
  4:39pm Braveness23:

this reminds me of brushing my teeth while tripping on acid
  4:40pm Mike East:

someone came in yesterday to rent a 6 string acoustic. All we had available was a 12 string. He came back today wanting a refund because he restrung it with only 6 strings and "it didn't sound right." I gave him 20 bucks to get out of my office.
  4:43pm Cecile:

I have the Primitive Calculators album. Pure hate on vinyl.
  4:45pm Cheri Pi:

Oh snap I just listened to this comp recently! I love the Oz music. Cecile, did you ever get your copy of Krypton 10 (I think that's what it is)
  4:46pm Cecile:

I did. Haven't played it yet. Still waiting on that loaned turntable (taps foot)
  4:48pm Jorge:

where can i hear the rest of the Various: Tension: Spanish Experimental Underground 1980-1985 tracks???
  4:48pm Cheri Pi:

Oh girl... I feel that pain. I've had my TT repaired 2x this year, totally worth the expense though; as was K10.. what a treat you have to look forward to
  4:49pm Cecile:

well, gotta go, see folks on the board or in the "stacks".
  4:54pm Cheri Pi:

hell yeah!!!!!!!!!!! goodnight all, see you in the archives.
  4:56pm dale:

i like phil lynott's voice on these ballads. this is a great tune - very rod and faces
  5:00pm Larry:

Man this is a gorgeous "Whiskey"
  5:00pm Larry:

good call on Rod & Faces, never thought of that before!
  5:00pm Mike East:

I gotta get that Thin Lizzy record...
  5:02pm paula pc:

i STILL cannot believe how good this band is, STILL, live!!
  5:05pm glenn:

this is just as good as the 12 string ricky at a fraction of the cost.
  5:05pm kat330:

@Mike: Agreed, a great Whiskey.
  5:12pm Mike East:

@glenn - we got one of those, too. Also a Danelectro electric sitar which is much fun.
  5:13pm kat330:

Non sequitur: Anyone from Brussels around? Or who knows the city architecture a bit?
  5:13pm glenn:

that's basically the coral, isn't it?
  5:14pm SUEA:

guy sounds like the little crazy girl recordings heard on irwin's show.
  5:15pm glenn:

i'm a big fan of danelectro, especially their cheap and cheerful pedals.
  5:15pm Mike East:

no, we've got those, too. The Danelectro is a bit different - doesn't have the resonator strings, and the shape is more of a teardrop.
Avatar 5:15pm BT:

Kat, I'm headed to Charleroi
  5:17pm kat330:

Among my travel photos I have this building, which I cannot identify, and the Internet only resulted in this unidentified "stock photo": http://www.canstockphoto.com/detail-of-a-historic-building-in-6887472.html Anyone recognize it?
  5:19pm jt:

  5:20pm glenn:

on a somewhat related note,. i scored an akai headrush off of craigslist. my internet search for info about it led me to these guys (their guitarist uses a heasdrush)- arma secreta.
  5:20pm paula pc:

good lord Brian this is a juggernaut!!
  5:22pm good at this:

kat330: http://www.trabel.com/brussel/brussels-guild_houses.htm
  5:25pm kat330:

@good at this: Indeed you are! Thank you kindly! The House of the Dukes of Brabants.
  5:33pm Mike East:

Hey glenn - do you know anything about figuring out the model of a Gibson Acoustic? I've got a serial#
  5:35pm jt:

three 45 minute sets? that sounds monstrous.

feedtime really affected how i learned to play both guitar and drums. overtones, harmonics, natural ring on guitar. on drums, slight shifts in timing affecting the feel of a beat that otherwise stays rock steady. still have 1st LP and Shovel on my "play along with this" drums playlist 20+ years later.
  5:36pm Mr Donut:

Thanks, Feedtime!
  5:38pm glenn:

not really. can gibson help? they should have a data base of serial #s, i would think. or, you could just send me the guitar, and i'll ask some questions. it might take a few years, though.
  5:39pm kat330:

Thanks, BT and feedtime!
  5:40pm kat330:

@Mike: Maybe "good at this" can help as s/he did me.
  5:40pm Mike East:

No problem - what's your address? I'll overnight ship it. :)
  5:42pm paula pc:

THANKS, Brian!!!
  5:52pm glenn:

http://www.gibson.com/en-us/support/serialnumbersearch/ this is from 1975 - present, so i don't know if it'll help or not.
  5:55pm Madalyn:

Thanks for playing my song! :*
  6:00pm Mike East:

hmm...I've only got 6 numbers - they are looking for 8. The plot thickens.
  12:12am Lee:

Petition to get feedtime to play more NY shows:

somebody please get this going
  3:09pm Cecile:

Hey, party some other time for me, work caught up with me....
  3:17pm Matt from Springfield:

No prob, Cecile. I'm listening to Irwin live right now anyway.

But everyone, make sure to party down to this at some point!
  7:35pm Njål:

Wow, fun show, and fun being mentioned by Rick ('that Norwegian gentleman' at the show last year).
